Not trolling despite what people say....it is a well known fact that programs screen applications with various factors. I assume those 2 factors are STEP 1 (230-235 cut off at top programs) and IM grade (reject PASS grades).

I have low 240s for step 1, go to a top 10, have a little published research, volunteerism, and some interesting EC's to boot.

Sounds awesome right? Nope. That PASS in IM can easily pre-screen me from top programs..

It's such BS. I have honored programs that I felt like I barely tried in...and PASSED IM despite getting feedback that I was doing awesome. I absolutely beat myself to a pulp on this rotation...

Probably pretentious programs I would not have wanted to attend anyways?

Maybe. I mean everyone would take a look at Hopkins or B&W if given the invite, right? YMMV on what you think is "pretentious", but yeah, could be a bunch of dicks there.

Look, your app is good, really good in fact, and good enough to get invites to lots of really good places. The kind of places even your grandmother knows about. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

You're not going to have to scramble into neurology or anything.

also depends on the grade distribution for your school for the IM rotation... maybe... maybe not.

you'll likely still get screened.

but you have a lot of other things working out for you. except that.

Yea it will most likely get you screened at a handful of places, but it depends. Do you have 'high pass' as an option for clinical grades? If not, then what percentage are awarded honors for IM? Also, what's your projected class standing/3rd year performance? Depending upon your answers, I think you could still land a top 20 residency.

No one is going to screen to that level.

The screen will look at "honors" vs "pass" no one has time to delve into the stats.

A few places will probably look at graduating institution. A "pass" from Penn or Duke or Hopkins won't hurt your application with regards to "screening".

Look . . . EVERYONE (almost everyone, don't get pedantic) sends their application to these top 10 institutions because it's electronic and "why not?" - they have to do something to narrow down the applications they will start looking through. I've had the chance to help with this process some in residency and fellowship and it's a HUGE pain in the ass to decide who you're going to invite.

Yea since he said he attends a top 10 school, I wanted to get an idea of the grading distribution because as you mentioned, a 'pass' might not necessarily get him screened at all of the heavy weights. But I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of the screening process, just the experience of my classmates

a lot of the process is based on what school you come from so might be okay at some places...who knows where though

That irritated me the most about the whole application process, the fact that your school's supposed reputation is taken into consideration. But this has all been discussed time and again so w/e

Why did that irritate you?

Why did that irritate you?

Because I come from a mid-tier school and had classmates who were rejected interviews from a number of top tiers despite being otherwise competitive

Yea that kinda sucks...for some reason, I didn't know school ranking played that big of a part in residency selection process when I was undergrad applying to med school (maybe I was the only ignorant one)..med school applicants should be aware of this information so that they may want to go to the highest ranking school as possible if gunning for top specialties.
