Successful Applicant Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
J, you're awesome! I guess ELAC counts as a mixed animal clinic, haha, I put down my goat experiences with Dr. S, but the only thing we ever really did with any non-small or exotic animals was Coggins and that one time I went out to a farm with Dr. S for a horse euth.

And all the random farm animals at the main clinic! I went out on a few of those Coggins runs, the last one was for 22 horses...I'm surely gonna miss it...

By the way, you never got to work with the big cats? I missed the last time they had a large leopard because I was at school...I got to work the next day only to find a bunch of pictures with some lucky people hugging a sedated leopard on the x-ray table. Ugh!

There are a lot of names flying up on the off the wait list thread. I don't see many of those names here. Y'all got accepted. Congrats on a dream come true. Show us your details so the underdog applicants for C/O 2014 still have hope!

You are right! Fair's fair. So sorry. : ( We'll work on it.

First time applicant. I was 39 at the time of application and will be 40 when I start vet school.

My personal statement is attached. I don't always check for responses to my posts so feel free to PM me with questions. It is my opinion that non-trads should be heavily using the VMCAS supplemental section! Leave nothing open to interpretation in a negative light.

Applied:
UF, Penn, Cornell, Davis, Western
Withdrew:
Western (couldn't complete requirements in time)
Interviewed:
UC Davis
Rejected without interviews:
UF, and presumably Penn though they haven't sent me a letter yet
Waitlisted:
UC Davis, Cornell
Accepted:
UC Davis, Cornell
Attending:
Davis! (Still love Cornell though)

GRE:

680 verbal; 670 math

Education:

My undergraduate degree was from Wellesley College--a top-tier liberal arts college. I graduated summa cum laude in 1999 with a degree in philosophy. I was a non-trad at Wellesley as well. I transferred in at the age of 27. Prior to that, I attended community college full-time while working full-time.

Since I decided I wanted to become a veterinarian in 2006 I've taken my post-Bac sciences wherever I can get them. As a result, I ended up with transcripts from 8 schools (I previously thought 10 but I just checked VMCAS. It was 8). I notated this in my supplemental section.

I also had a large number of W's on my transcripts. I provided an explanation for this in the supplemental section as well: Allan Hancock College is my local community college and it is very inexpensive to enroll in courses as a California resident. In the past I have enrolled in courses at AHC and then freely exercised my option to withdraw if I found during the semester that I needed to work more hours at my job, whether that was Wherehouse Music or the Navy.

GPA calculations:
Undergrad--all schools 3.93MBA 3.80Science (post-Bac, pre-Vet at time of app) 3.56 Overall GPA at date of application 3.85

LORs:

I submitted a total of 10. Because of the random variety of things I do, different people have knowledge of certain of my abilities but not others. I felt like it took 10 people to provide a comprehensive assessment of my experience and abilities. One was from a vet who is familiar with my knowledge of feline medical issues and my ability to provide care; three were from my Alley Cat Allies experience; the academic one came from my community college Philosophy professor who knows my academic abilities better than any one else because I took so many classes from him; the other five were as I result of my volunteer experience--people whom I've helped and others I work with.

Good luck everyone! I wish that all your dreams come true.

LVT2DVM - i can't believe you didn't get in sooner...props to UGA for seeing the obvious! :claps:

I want to give a shout out to NOVA!! Great CC. Grew up there and went to George Mason my freshman year.

Congrats again :highfive:

just saying again, i never realized there were so many people from the virginia/MD area!

i'm right around NVCC and GMU too - i'm taking a physics course at GMU this summer!

such a small world.

ps - congrats again to LVT2DVM! can't believe you didn't get in sooner - i wish i had some of your experience!

I finally got a reply from Massey today and Eloise told me that for some reason my application had been accidentally withdrawn! She said she was sorry for the mistake and they would still consider my application if I wanted, and that I was considered a very strong applicant and would receive an offer of admission if I still wished to be considered. I knew something was up! I guess it's too late now though...I think I really might have chosen Massey if I had known sooner 🙁

UGA doesnt factor in courses taken 8 years prior to the date of your application. Therefore my Cumulative GPA is much higher there as it factors out that bad Sophmore year. Thank God!

WOW! That is really impressive, LVT2DVM!!! I don't understand why you were not accepted sooner. With all of your amazing experiences, maybe they just thought you were overqualified and would make everyone else look bad 😉 I'm so happy for you, and I wish you the best of luck. You're going to make an amazing veterinarian!! 😀

I question the same thing because LVT has a amazing resume!

Congrats everyone!

Btw, DocDVMD...I think I met you the day I interviewed at OSU. One of the people I talked to was from Cornell and she did research there! Congrats!

Hm, could be... but I do know there were a bunch of us Cornell students who do research that interviewed at OSU. If you're thinking of me, I was the one who fell asleep during the info session in the morning

awesome, but, how'd you get in with the clinic at 14-15 years old?

I started working at the current clinic where I am now at age 14. I did a lot of walking, bathing, cleaning cages and feeding, and then they trusted me with medications and having more client contact, etc (moved from the back to the front!) As I proved myself, I got more and more responsibilities. Became a full tech around 19 (unlicensed of course, worked under the guidance of other techs and the vet). It's possible!

I started working at the current clinic where I am now at age 14. I did a lot of walking, bathing, cleaning cages and feeding, and then they trusted me with medications and having more client contact, etc (moved from the back to the front!) As I proved myself, I got more and more responsibilities.

Same with me. I started working at the clinic when I was 15 and have been there ever since. Not sure if it was entirely legal at that age, but it's worked out pretty well 🙂

So my grades are pretty bad. To offset those
embarrassing numbers I've demonstrated a committment to the field and show cased a broad range of clinical and leadership experiences. I also have an interest in lab animal med. It's not impossible to overcome the grades but you'll need to work your butt off, maybe do a post-bac and opt to specialize in a field of medicine that's in dire need of vets.

Good Luck future applicants and a special shout out to all the non-trads out there! :luck:

Hm, could be... but I do know there were a bunch of us Cornell students who do research that interviewed at OSU. If you're thinking of me, I was the one who fell asleep during the info session in the morning

DocDVMD, idk if we've done this dance already... but do I know you from the AMC? I was there from summer 06 until I think end of summer 07ish, dont think i picked up any shifts after that.... I vaguely remember someone doing guiding eyes.... Also went to Hunter with one of the 07 volunteers but I don't think she applied yet...

Not to jump on the "I think I know you!" bandwagon or anything 😀

So happy to be a low GRE survivor! I'm posting my stats to give hope to anyone else who's a crappy standardized test taker, like me.

I've been avoiding posting here because I'm not the type to toot my own horn at all, but I also realize that I relied on this thread so much last year. So here goes....

36 yo female, 2nd time applicant

Applied, Interviewed, Accepted, & Attending: Tufts!
UG Degree: B.A., Psychology with Bio minor. Also have an A.A.S. in Animal Health Technology from a local technical college

GPA: 3.9-ish
Science GPA: 4.0 (and worked to earn every last bit of it) 🙂
GRE: 1280 - 700q/580v/5.0 AW

Veterinary/Animal Experience (My disclaimer: I didn't apply using VMCAS at all, so I didn't measure my work in hours b/c I didn't need to):

-3 yrs PT (~20 hrs/wk) at small animal veterinary clinic as Assistant/Receptionist while in undergrad

-10 yrs--most of it FT+ at the MSPCA at Nevins Farm as an Animal Care & Adoption Counselor, Foster Care Coordinator, Education Coordinator, Summer Camp Director, & Vet Assistant (not all at once, but typically held 2 of those simultaneously over the years). Also did some volunteer work in the horse barn when I could.

-2 months last year as a Vet Assistant/Kennel Tech at a different small animal hospital (they had donkeys there too, among some other farm animals)😍

-6 months as a Vet Assistant in the shelter spay clinic at the Boston MSPCA

-3 yrs (and counting) working as a surgical tech with a local feral cat group on their spay days, plus 1 yr working at some of the monthly feral clinics at Tufts with 4th-yr students (I helped in surgery or prep each time)

-senior year in college in an Animal-Facilitated Therapy externship at a human rehab hospital, working primarily with speech therapists & a dog in sessions with patients, as well as going on nursing home visits--really rewarding work!

Other Random Work Experience: 1 1/2 years in retail, a summer as a waitress, a few years in a children's room at a library, pet sitting as needed (including caring for a relative's diabetic cat)

Honors/Awards:
-
Valedictorian for my UG class & my Animal Health Tech program (both small classes)
-Dean's List
-Phi Beta Kappa

LORs:
-Vet I worked with most often at the shelter
-Shelter manager, whom I've known for 10+ years
-Professor from my Toxicology class last year (Ph.D., MPH)
-Advisor/Program Director/Veterinarian from my Animal Health Tech Program

I'd been out of school several years when I decided to go back & give vet school a shot. It had always been on my radar, but much time (& mucho $$$) spent at Angell Memorial in Boston with a HCM cat motivated me to finish my last prereq. Somewhere along the way, I also fell in love with shelter medicine.

I only applied to Tufts last year & wasn't accepted; in my file review, I was told that I should take additional classes to get back into school mode. It's been a fun year immersing myself in Reproductive Physiology, Animal Behavior, and Pathogenic Micro, to name a few. I've been so inspired by others' stories on here--and I hope that I can inspire others in return.

Congrats to everyone in the Class of 2013! And to those applying this year, lots of love & best of luck!!!!😀 OK, now my stats are posted & I'm done talking about myself--glad that's over.

thanks for sharing, guppy! way to keep your eyes on the prize!

Female, 2nd application, 35yrs when I matriculate

Applied (08-09):
Illinois
Interviews offered: Illinois
Rejected: none
Waitlisted: Illinois
Accepted: Illinois

Undergrad: BS Animal Sciences - Science, Biotech & Pre-VetMed
(10 years at CC then transferred to UIUC to finish BS. [I took off time to get the kids started in their educations.] Individual distance courses at Oregon State, Colorado State, and Iowa State to keep up with academics.)

Overall Cum. GPA: around a 3.0 Scored a 0.0 my first year of undergrad, or it would be closer to a 3.2
Last 45 hours GPA: around a 3.0 (This includes a few goof off courses that I got B-'s in, over the past 2 years.)

GRE: 590V, 730Q, 3.5W (I do much better when I have more time to organize what I write.)

Vet Experience
1800 hours
Two Rural Area Vet Service Trips - Dogs and cats ( I plan on going on a few equine trips as a vet student.)
Poison Control - Dog, cat, mouse, hamster, psittacines, pig, horses, cows, llamas, geckos, etc... You name it.
SA clinic work - Dogs, cats, ferrets,
and Job Shadowing - dog, cat, bird

I had NO LA vet experience at all by my first application, though I did have interaction with DVM's through coursework at school, and trying to do a summer research program until I realized I couldn't afford it. (Yay, Foal and Calf Watch!) In this area, you pretty much have to grow up around here and do a high school work study program, or work for a mixed practice DVM for 6 months to get LA experience.

I didn't mention watching the chiropractic calls that Dr. [Last Name] came in to do while I was volunteering at the rescue, or the floating demonstration that he did on [Horse name] during the rescue's open house.

Animal Experience
Non-pet animal experience
610 hours documented
Equine Rescue once a week - Equine mostly, with the addition of a cow this past 10 months. One of the managers of the rescue is a farrier.
The local humane society - cats, dogs, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, chinchillas, etc...
Group learning experiences - dairy, equine, swine, ovine

* I've machine and hand milked cows and goats.
* I also did some hand milking for mares after foaling. (long story)
* I've halter trained a colt.
* I've herded, drenched, and dipped sheep.
* I've herded, restrained, injected, and done jugular draws on piglets

Pet experience
I did not put on the VMCAS but did include in the Illinois supplemental under the individual animal experiences.
Grew up down the street from a farm: Horses, dairy cows, ducks, chickens
Raised chickens for scouting projects (Yes, I can candle an egg and tell you what I'm looking at. Dr. Parsons was disappointed that I did not actually take any official credit poultry courses.)
I was an indentured servant for my great-grandma on her farm: goats, geese, ducks, chickens. ...And a few pigs. (Ahh, the memory of a freshly butchered pig on the kitchen table. They knew there was a problem with me, when I wanted to know what the organs were.)
Learned to ride English, umpteen million years ago

Extracurricular/Community Service:
Illinois Leadership Program - Insight
Pre-Vet Club
Study Circles on Race
MANRRS - Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences
Boy Scouts 15 years - 4 as a Leader [Attended BSLT, Worked at a scout reservation, and did yearly maintenance before summer camp started] (Yes, I am female, but there were extenuating circumstances. Besides, it was way more fun than Girl Scouts.)
First Vice President Ashkum District - Calumet Council (Boy Scouts) Communications Officer
-Post [number] Outdoor Adventure
-[City name] and [County name] Police Explorer Post
Girls Scouts 12 yrs - 7 as a scout and another 5 as a Co-leader
Back in the day, in high school
4 yrs Drama, 2.5yrs Debate Team, 1 yr Student Congress, 3yrs Speech Team (Why yes, I do have a secretary voice, thank you.)

Employment
Retail, retail, and more retail, which did not pay very well, but better than working at a vet clinic. I also did two and three jobs along with coursework and wrangling 3 kids. Four, if you count my dh. One of the kids is an Aspie and all three are gifted students.

LORs
2 DVMs - Toxicology
1 Owner of the equine rescue that I volunteer for.

My grades are on the low end, and I accidentally did not use the grade waiver form, this year, which made it worse. 👎 (They counted each and every one of those F's from freshman year. 🙄) I still got an interview and accepted off of the waitlist. I'm one of those students that had a lot of other stuff going on.

So I'm the poster child for keep plugging and you'll get there!
Hope this helps you guys and good luck!

I'm another off-the-waitlist, non-trad (35 when school starts), but I'm superstitious and I'm thinking I should stop posting about getting off the waitlist 'til I'm holding the offer letter in my hands!! 😳

I will say this, though: this is my first time looking at this thread, and I have to say, I can't believe I'm in with the rest of you--your vet/animal experiences are truly astounding. I might've given up if I'd read this last year! 😉

awesome application eatpinkpenguins! I must say I'm selfishly glad you had to apply again because if not then I would never have met you 😛

Just pushing this thread back to the front page. If you got into vet school and have not posted yet please do! 🙂

OK, I wasn't going to post because I am a little embarrassed about my stats but I see the 2014ers starting the long crazy process and thought my stats might make them more hopeful that it actually can be done, so here goes.
Oh, I wanted to add that I graduated in 2002 with NO basic science, not even biology. My degree was very specific; I took ecology, conservation bio, chemistry of soils, etc... Get the idea? I had to start from Bio1 and Chem1 when I was 27!
