Hi! :) I should have clarified essentially one giant list is being made and moved around. So copy and then paste after adding your own programs to the master list. Also make a new post instead of replying to the previous one so that the posts won't get excessively long as more programs are added.

I've got to say I'm shocked at how many some of you applied to lol. Did your lab PI's essentially just write one letter and change the who it was addressed to for each program?

I split it up tried to assign each recommender to no more than 5 programs.

I sent 10 applications and have 2 the same recommenders. They wrote me great letters. I think it is hard to get more than 2 people unless you have a several years of research experience, and worked on multiple projects. I have 2 years of experience at my institution so my mentor knows me for a long time, and she doesnt mind to submit her letter.
Another PI was from SURP I completed last year.

Thanks! I just got an e-mail with the letter earlier this morning. My stats: junior, 4.0 GPA, small liberal arts college, bio/math major

Do schools usually give all of the first wave of acceptances out on the same day?

What are these abbreviations and how are you hip to it? Who teaches you about all these applications?

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but do you need to meet any special requirements to apply to summer research programs in general. I've never done any type of research, is prior research experience required.
Yes, usually a GPA cutoff (3.0) and a few general science pre-reqs. some only accept sophomore and junior students as well.

So you had about 10+ recommenders? Have you worked with all of them in a research manner?
I think you are misunderstanding the lists that people are posting. So the way it works is that every person copies the last list in the comments and adds the programs that he/she applied to. So, a couple of replies earlier, you were supposed to copy the entire list then add the three programs you applied to. if you scroll down a couple of replies from yours, you will notice that xxpathtomedxx integrated your programs into the list. The reason the master list is helpful is that applicants of next year can just look at the very last list mentioned in the thread and find all the programs that students in sdn applied for and what day the first acceptance or rejection was sent, rather than reading every reply in a (soon to be) 27-page thread to find all that information. Hope that helps!

Hey so quick question, I applied to a bunch of programs near the deadline (Jan 30-ish) and I noticed that last year's cohorts applied about a month before. Will this put me at a significant disadvantage like it would if I was applying to Med school? I don't recall any of these programs listing "rolling admissions" in their websites.
If you did not see any listing of rolling admissions then you're good! This is my third summer doing the summer internship circuit (lol) and I have gotten into programs even when I submitted close to or on the deadline. The most important thing is to submit a good application!

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting to the thread, so bear with me if I make any formatting mistakes etc. For Mayo, I applied for neurobiology of disease. Also applied to NIH SIP, had 2 interviews, waiting to hear back... I gotta respond to Mayo by next Thursday so I hope I'll find out soon :thinking:

That's right, Mayo offered me a position on 2/8/18 and I need to say whether I'll accept it by next Thursday. I'm waiting to hear back from the NIH, but if I don't receive anything by then I'll accept the Mayo fellowship.

Oh okay, awesome! I guess people are just a bit eager to submit early then. By the way, would you happen to know approximately how many seats are available in each program on average? UChicago's CAMP reported over 200 applicants and my inner stats nerd would like to calculate the approximate acceptance rate.
I know that most programs in Northeast have 30 seats, and I heard from the admissions team that they receive close to 1,000 applications. I know - crazy and very competitive!

Damn, congrats man! Would you mind sharing your stats with us?

Thank you so much, I'm thrilled  My stats: Junior, Neuroscience major, 3.96 GPA (sci: 4.0), small liberal arts school, first-gen college student & first-gen immigrant. Recs from college advisor & postdoc mentor. Last summer I did Rutgers NeuroSURP and it was incredible, learned a TON and really solidified my intentions for a PhD :prof: Best of luck to everyone who applied! You're all super smart and talented. If anyone has any other questions feel free to ask/pm ~

I don’t I’m sorry :( it’s program specific, that would be something to look at the website, or ask a program coordinator for!

Congrats!:) I’m not on my laptop right now otherwise I would, but for continuity and readability you should edit the last copied version of the list and put the date you were accepted to mayo under the “accepted” section, and put the date you were offered the interview in the section.

Also just a heads up for everyone dates should be put next to rejections Too because it helps people know when programs start corresponding with students!

Not to jump the gun, as I certainly have no definite expectation of acceptance to any programs, but I'm wondering, what do students who have been accepted to one program and given a week or two deadline to accept the offer go about deciding whether or not to wait for other programs? Do people in these situations sometimes contact the other programs to inquire about their acceptance their as well? I noticed BlotoftheNorth was in this sort of situation it seems (however idk if you're waiting for many other programs to respond or not). Thanks guys!

Thats awesome! Just to kind of piggyback of my last question, when exactly did you apply? I've also applied to Mayo and I know a few other people here have as well, and haven't really heard anything at all from them.

I sent my app in on 1/17/2018. If I may ask, which department(s) at Mayo did you apply to? I've heard from past threads that all applications for each specific department are sent to the PIs of that department, and then they decide from those who they want for a summer intern. I think the time course of that process varies per department, so don't lose hope! :giggle:

Been in that exact situation the past two years . If you have an acceptance but are waiting to hear from other School I recommend shooting the other programs an email informing them you have an offer with whatever deadline to accept and see if they can expedite , I’ll see if I can find a pass email of mine to help

Dear Internship Committee,

Greetings, my name is ______, a recent internship applicant via Leadership Alliance. I am emailing you concerning a competing offer I have received with a deadline of acceptance for March 23rd. University of Pennsylvania is one of my top choices and I am contacting you in hope of hearing from your committee prior to making a decision. I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Has anyone applied to the non-Rochester campuses for Mayo? Does anyone know those are harder to get into due to availability?

I doubt they would be harder. If anything, I would think Rochester labs would be harder--but I am pretty sure it is equally hyper-competitive lol

That's probably very true! I was just wondering how many people applied to non-Rochester labs. Do you know roughly what the acceptance rates are?

@BlotoftheNorth Just curious, did your two NIH interviews come unsolicited or from PIs you emailed/contacted?

Requests for an interview came from PIs about 2-3 weeks after I emailed them. I emailed about 15 PIs in total - received neither rejections nor replies from the rest of them, except for one saying they weren't taking interns this year. I've heard that emailing PIs and mentioning a specific interest in their research largely improves your chances to an extent.

I would say that the acceptance rate is <.08, depending on the lab/labs you applied to. but lets just say a safe estimate would be 5% acceptance rate

I emailed about 15 PIs in total - received neither rejections nor replies from the rest of them, except for one saying they weren't taking interns this year. I've heard that emailing PIs and mentioning a specific interest in their research largely improves your chances to an extent.

Your response to this question may be specific to that program and application, but don't most programs generally ask for you not to contact PI's personally? I know I think all of mine said this.

Thanks for clarifying.. I was lurking and wondering what the heck the purpose of the list was.

Most SURP/SURF/REU programs offered by an official university involve a centralized decision-making process (in that a specifically appointed committee reads though all the applications and makes lab assignments from there) whereas the NIH SIP involves a de-centralized process (in that all applications get placed in a single database that the PIs themselves search through based upon certain criteria/interests). The SIP program itself recommends reaching out to PIs and notifying them of your application in the database, as positions are granted on a first-come first-serve basis (with exceptions, like if there are multiple candidates for a critical position). So it does depend upon the program :)

Interesting. So I’ll keep doing what I’m doing. I had emailed 7 PIs with a specific letter tailored to each of them, but hadn’t heard anything back so I guess I’ll keep trying.

That's probably very true! I was just wondering how many people applied to non-Rochester labs. Do you know roughly what the acceptance rates are?

The coordinator Mrs. Muller told me the other two campuses each accepted about 12 students last year. And the Rochester campus accepted 130 if I remember correctly. If you are curious you can call her or email her, she is really nice.

Got it. Thanks for clarifying! I got scared I was dropping the ball by not contacting a bunch of PI's lol
