Summer Research Application and Acceptance Thread ( SPUR, SURF, SURP, SIP, AMGEN, LA etc.) 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You shouldn't even be applying to these programs if you are pre-med... To quote @Microbug, please don't apply to these programs if you know full well that you want to do a MD program in the future. You are simply taking away opportunities to those who actually want to pursue a research career.

Some people have lower ethical threshold.

Kinda hurtful how quick you guys are to judge. I've been doing research since junior year of highschool and have been one of the only freshman at my small school to actually be invited to be an undergraduate researcher so early since the rest are juniors or seniors (or work study/TA sophomores). I love being in the lab and am on track to even publish at the end of the semester with my PI and I am so so excited.

These experiences have changed my career track and I'm not sure if I want to purely go to medical school which was originally the plan a few years ago, or instead get a PhD, or ideally, both. That's what I meant - I was just asking about the disadvantages of indicating I'm MD/PhD versus purely PhD to programs like these since most people that apply MD/PhD I assume are doing so since they're only premed and are trying to get research under their belt.

I have done SURP last year at one of top schools in NYC, and I was surprised that I was the only who truly wants to do MD/PhD. Most people who got in are going to MD school, and some even change the track completely to non health care profession.

I don’t think you actually read what we said. We are perfectly fine with people who want to use these programs to explore the possibility of research oriented career. We do not expect anyone to be fully determined to do PHD or MDPHD. We are saying that there are people who (1) knows the mission of the school is to serve PHD and MD/PHD and (2) applies for them anyways even though they only want to do MD at that point in time. Essentially they lied to get in. If you’re not of these people, my comments were not directed at you.

Hello everyone, today I got an email from Johns Hopkins saying that they need additional information from me: "Your application has cleared triage (congratulations) and we are now following up on the educational disadvantage." Does clearing triage mean I was accepted into the program?
Which john hopkins program was it? Do they send that out to everyone who has been taken into the next phase?

Hi! I'm new to this, but I got an offer from the NIH in epidemiological research at the NHLBI and I just got an offer from the CPRTP program of MDAnderson. I think the other two MDAnderson undergrad programs (SURP and CPRIT-CURE) don't get back until mid-March, but I have to respond to the CPRTP offer by next Monday, so I was wondering if anyone knew much about the differences between the three MDAnderson programs and perhaps how it would compare to the NIH?

Not sure if everyone knows this already, but you can google "grantome [program name]" to get a lot of information about acceptance rates, etc. For example, googling "grantome pediatric oncology education" yields the acceptance rate, URM ratio, and average GPA of St. Jude POE participants across different years.

Anyone working in NIH in Bethesda want a roommate or can give me some tips in finding affordable housing?

It was for the Basic Sciences Institute SIP program. I don't think they send it to everyone. They only send that email to people that put that they had an educational disadvantage in their application!

Received interview offer OSU SROP 2/16; interview this week
Accepted UVa SRIP 2/19

Sophomore
4.0 GPA OOS student on full academic scholarship at Big Ten School
1 + Yr research experience on post-surgical patient outcome, ongoing
1 Yr microbiology research, ongoing
grad level course on research methods, use of equipment, research project & presented findings
volunteering in hospice
Capt. Dance Team, competes at collegiate level

Reply is required to the UVa program by 2/26. Any thoughts on this? Although I grew up in different state, everyone in family went to OSU. However, I might really enjoy going to the summer program at UVa. It would be nice to get out of the Midwest area and experience something different.
I already got accepted for the UVA program. They sent those about a week ago.

From what I know, you'll mostly be doing "cubicle" research in the CPRTP program, with studies that mostly span in the public health areas (Epidemiology, biostatistics, surveying, etc.). As to CPRIT-CURE, it's a program centered for people interested in doing benchtop cancer research. Students will be required to work on a projected related to cancer in some way, but this won't be required for those in SURP.

I have been accepted to SURP at Case Western Reserve University. I have not heard anything from Mayo Clinic SURF yet, is there still hope?

You gotta be clear about saying pre-med vs pre-MSTP.

I put down MD/Ph.D on my Mayo app. In my cover letter discussing career goals, I emphasized how I wanted to go to a great medical school after undergrad (such as Mayo) and I was one of the first applicants to get in. It is important to immerse yourself in research to really understand the whole gamut of medicine if you want to optimize your potential of being a physician. All of the people that give you advice that you find yourself trying to make sense out of-- Chances are your trying to make sense out of their nonsense and they really are only keyboard warriors acting like they know everything. Believe in yourself and use the knowledge you accumulate through life to make your own rational decisions and assumptions. stay positive and keep a positive mindset and you will make a great physician!

3.7 @ at a respected university. Also was in the marines (went in @ 17 years old and got meritoriously promoted from being a squad leader the whole time through), have research I am currently working on with some of the top cardiologists in the world, president of my pre-med club, and hundreds of hours of volunteering and clinical experience. I emphasized a passion I have for medicine and research, and I also emphasize how I am not like every other applicant. Did you apply to Mayo?-- if so, what lab(s)?-- There still is plenty of time to get accepted as it is a rolling process. Goodluck and congrats on your other acceptance-- Be proud of it

Yes I applied to mayo for either a gene therapy or pharmacology and experimental therapeutics laboratory. I have a 3.9 from a smaller, public university. I have a year of research under my belt and a wide variety of volunteer hours. Thank you, congrats on your acceptance!

For Mayo Clinic, does anybody know if we did a phone interview with a PI and they decided to pursue another candidate- Does that mean an automatic rejection from the program or another PI could potentially have an interest?

I didn't know Mayo does phone interviews. Do all PIs do that?

I just got an offer to the SURIP Summer Internship Program at Penn State Hershey!! I’m soooo happy!!! The only thing is that they want to hear back from me by next Wednesday, but I haven’t heard back from the other programs I applied to.

Congrats ! Read up through the thread for the template and go ahead and send email to programs about competing offer

* don’t tell them what program u got into

Hey so quick question, I just presented a poster on my current research at my school's biomaterials conference. Would it be worthwhile for me to send an update letter to the schools I applied to mentioning this poster? Some programs have an "addendum" section for adding stuff to submitted apps.

Updates are great when their significant updates such as a publication or winning an award. I would only update if you have no prior research presentations on c/v or you won an award for your poster

Gotcha, thank you!

HSCI or Harvard amgen more competitive?

Y'all....reading this thread is making me nervous. I had a rough freshman year so my GPA is 3.6 (4.0 since I transferred from a large state school R1 to a small, newer, private, teaching-focused science & technology university with a full ride). I had excellent recs (one from each school that I worked with closely/knew on a personal level) and good research & extracurriculars but I'm afraid my essays sucked, even though they're fine when I go back and read them.

Waiting to hear from:

I sent a lot of emails to PIs that I now are involved in research at Pitt but haven't had responses...
I did have one researcher from PSU Hershey email me, saying he has openings in his lab for unpaid summer interns but idk if I can afford that kind of thing. My school requires an external internship to graduate so I'm extra stressed (what a ****ty thing to do)

Pretty nervous about JHU SIP but haven't heard anything back from them yet.
I wonder if you wrote to them to ask about the status, or they just sent out their offers to every admitted student?
And, do you mind sharing your stats!

Congrats again~~~~~

That's awesome!! Congratulations!

Do you know if they send out all first round acceptances on the first day? Or do they just send out acceptances based on research mentors and their preferences?

Y'all....reading this thread is making me nervous. I had a rough freshman year so my GPA is 3.6 (4.0 since I transferred from a large state school R1 to a small, newer, private, teaching-focused science & technology university with a full ride). I had excellent recs (one from each school that I worked with closely/knew on a personal level) and good research & extracurriculars but I'm afraid my essays sucked, even though they're fine when I go back and read them.

Waiting to hear from:
Case Western Reserve SURP
PSU Hershey SURIP
NIH SIP (no responses from PIs)
UPenn SUIP
JHU SIP
UPenn SUPERS
Rutgers RiSE
Thomas Jefferson University Biomedical Sciences Undergrad Research
Pitt SURP

Rejected from:
Amgen @ NIH

I sent a lot of emails to PIs that I now are involved in research at Pitt but haven't had responses...
I did have one researcher from PSU Hershey email me, saying he has openings in his lab for unpaid summer interns but idk if I can afford that kind of thing. My school requires an external internship to graduate so I'm extra stressed (what a ****ty thing to do)
I received an offer from Case Western SURP last week. I'm not sure if they sent out all the acceptances yet or not.

Waiting for UT southwestern surf, Baylor smart and Pitt surp. Did anyone hear back from them?

Congratulations!! Just wondering are you an F1 student as well? I think I saw a previous post. What are your stats?

Thank you!! Yes, I'm an international F1 student, so I was very surprised! I really didn’t think I would get into anything because of my international student status. These are my stats:

-Double major in Biomedical Engineering and Neurobiology
-Overall GPA: 3.86
-I’ve been working on a research project for two years focused on brain metastases at my local medical center (this is my only research experience)
-Presented at 1 local and 1 national conference
-Heavily involved in an organization that provides emotional and financial support to children battling cancer
-First generation student

I got into the Basic Sciences Institute division! If I accept their offer, I have to send them 8 mentors I’d like to work with, which means they don’t pair you with a mentor before offering positions.

Rejected from CRISSP on Feb 16 (Submitted 01/30)...

Waiting on Mayo, MD anderson, UTSW, UAB SiBs, Vanderbilt, Cinncinatti, and Dartmouth MPUS
Hi there! do you mind posting or PMing me your stats? I also applied to CRISSP but haven't heard anything at all yet so I'm wondering whats up. Also did you apply to Cincinnati Children's SURF?

I'm so happy you got an amazing internship! Congratulations!!!! I was also nervous about being an international student and not getting one. I got a phone interview with mayo but they decided to pursue another candidate. I was really sad bec during the interview he asked me if I was a citizen or not.

I am a biomedical eng. major 3.65 GPA. Been doing research since may 2016, got a scholarship for research and I've held numerous leadership roles on campus.

Just wondering did your parents go to college at your home country? I'm really confused if identify myself as a first gen.

Unless I am mistaken, I believe he/she means first generation student as in the first person in his/her family to attend college?
