Temple ACMS 2010

Yay to BeautyDoc for starting the thread.

I will be applying this year.. they've continually pushed back the open date of the application.. and its past the 1st, but its still not up.. right?

I only see the application for the BCMS.. please let me know if I'm just not looking in the right place.

I wanted to get started on the essays.. do you reckon they'll be similar to the questions on the BCMS app?

Sorry I can't shed light on your question about the ACTs.. but I feel like they would.. I mean, most colleges will take them in place of the SATs so I really don't think it'll be an issue because ACT and SAT are both pretty standard in college admissions.

Hey ABC!!!, I forgot about the other thread that was started and remembered after I started this one, opps 😛....But anywho, when I went to the application site yesterday it said the 1st, but I'm not sure if the application link is the right one (ACMS opposed to the BCMS) I am going to do some more investigating today and I will definitetly let you know what I find out. Is this the only program you are applying to? I sent them an email about whether or not the ACT will be acceptable so we shall see...

The ACMS application seems to be online... but I can't download it. There seems to be an error with the link. I've tried on different computers and multiple browsers... is anyone else having any trouble?

I don't even see the application at all😕, the only link I see is for the BCMS. I called the office at Temple and a lady there was like "well it's working on my computer" 🙄 and I told her it wasn't working on mine so I would just try from another computer but it still didn't work, so IDK, I am going to call back today hopefully and figure it out.

ETA: It's working now !!!

do you need a 3.3 sci GPA or just a 3.3 Cum to apply?

I emailed them a couple weeks ago asking that same question, and they said "The Admissions Committee reviews all applications in a holistic manner. 3.3 GPA is the average." So I'm pretty sure the 3.3 is not a cut off, just an average. Also, for those that are having trouble accessing the application, it should be up and running. I was able to access it last night.

The essay section is long.

Good luck everyone. I am in the ACMS now, so if anyone has any questions I will try to answer them if I can.

Can you provide some information on the interviewing process and how do you know that the office has received all of your documents?

I never got confirmation that they had everything. I knew I was complete when they invited me for an interview. From the general application threads it doesn't seem like they are that good about confirming things like that. You can try calling.
The interview is basically like an interview for medical school. I think they are only having 3 days, but other than that, it's routine. There are 2 interviews, 1 with a faculty member or adcom that is open file, and another closed file, often with a student. Lunch, a tour, etc. It's really an interview for the med school because of the linkage.

Hey ygree,

Thank you for answering questions. In your estimation, what would you say the average GPA and MCAT of people currently in the ACMS program is? Just ballpark it. You don't have to answer it if you don't want to though-I'm just curious to know if I'd have a shot at getting into it in a couple of years.

I really don't know, but there seems to be a range. I don't know most people's numbers.

Thanks gyree, you are very helpful!!! 🙂

Glad to help 🙂

Hi - I've been trying to fill out the application, but I'm having a lot of trouble just "saving & continuing." Every time I press that button, it takes me to an error page, and I subsequently lose all of the information I had filled out. Is this happening with anyone else?

Hey guys,

Long time reader but first time poster here!

Just wondering, how is everyone sending their test scores (SAT and MCAT) to the Temple ACMS program? I couldn't find instructions on what their preferred method is.

Thanks!

I realized recently that this happens when you have entered an incorrect symbol/letter in one of the fields. LIke I was writing N/A for writing score on my SAT (since I took it before they had a Writing section). When I took the N/A out it saved properly.

Hope that helps.

I'm currently writing the essays and I have a couple quick questions on them. For those who have submitted the essays already, how long were your essays? And since some of the questions are very similar to the ones we had to write for Temple med school applications, did you just rewrite them using the same stories/reasons?

Last year, it said somewhere on the website that I could just reuse my AMCAS personal statement (and maybe also the supplemental essays?) so that's what I did.

cool, i need to reread the website to see if it still applies. ygree, did you ask for new letters of rec or just use the same ones for med school?

I think I used the same ones. I'm not 100% sure because I was filling out my AMCAS to reapply and got new letters for that, but I'm pretty sure they used the ones from my 1st AMCAS.

ill be sure to check that. thanks a lot!

For clarification are you saying that you did not answer the essay questions on the online application but just instead submitted a personal statement? Or are you saying you used pieces of your personal statement to answer the online essay questions?

Or am I just totally misunderstanding what you're saying in general lol

I think that instead of answering the essays they accepted my AMCAS personal statement. I think. I either read it on the website or spoke to/emailed the program director about it.

Temple ACMS is a great program but they had over 1000 applicants for 25 spots last year. I was told by someone on the admin committe that if you don't have at least a 3.5 science gpa, dont apply this year! Thats how crazy competitive this program has gotten with the guaranteed acceptance. it no longer is a post-bacc but just as hard or harder to get into as a med school. Don't waste your time applying.

Someone made a new account to post this innane comment? Really?

Well geez, Debbie Downer....

Anyone hear anything back from ACMS yet? I was complete within a few days of the program opening up but haven't heard anything further as of yet. Best of luck to everyone applying to this program!

Also, does anyone have an idea of when May interviews might be? I've submitted everything but my recs, and was hoping to make the cutoff! 😀

Hey guys, I submitted my materials middle of feb and haven't heard anything back yet either. Were you all able to verify if they received your letters of rec and transcripts? I got an email saying that my fee and app had been received, but when I called in to ask about the letters of rec/transcript, the response I got was "We need you to not call back for at least another month because we're receiving lots of applications right now." I called middle of march, about a month after I submitted my materials. Has anyone else run into a similar problem? There's not an online way to verify is there? Thanks!

After submitting my application I didn't hear anything back for about a month. Then, mid-march, I received an e-mail saying that a whole bunch of stuff (LOR, transcripts, etc) still needed to be submitted. I called back, as this had me worried, and they said that this was a generic e-mail that all applicants get regardless. They were then able to tell me that they had received all of my supporting documentation and essentially confirmed (over the phone) that my app was complete. Never receieved anything official/ in writing however...

I called on March 16th then on March 25th. They were able to confirm what they have/have not received. But the office basically told me not to call them anymore. They will call us if they have not received something. So unless they called you, I guess your file is complete.

I know it sounds really vague, but I guess we just have to deal with it! 🙂

Is it too late to apply to ACMS? I mean I know the deadline hasn't passed yet but anyone know how quickly the spots fill up? Also, did anyone apply with an ACT? What was the average MCAT score people got? I am asking because the MCAT has def. not been my strong suite so I am really worried. Thanks for the help

Admission to the program requires an interview, which will be conducted in May, June and July. Due to this fact, no spots will be "filled up" until the end of May at the earliest (or whenever they start getting back to people after interview). I'd say if you are interested definitely apply.

Also, since the program offers MCAT prep it may be of great help to you. You will eventually need to get above a 30, with no section lower than 8, in addition to maintaining a 3.5 in their coursework in order to matriculate into Temple. The only other thing I will say is that this program is very competitive and since you don't have a great MCAT score your other stats (GPAs, SAT/ACT/GRE) will need to be pretty solid in order to get a look. Best of luck!

Thanks for the responses! If and when I ever hear anything, I'll be sure to post an update! 🙂

It is definitely not too late to apply.

In this years class, about half still need to take the MCAT. So while some have pretty impressive scores, others don't. If you are otherwise competitive, you can still get in.

I'm not sure exactly, but later than this. As someone mentioned, until they have their interview days the spots haven't been filled.

just curious, has anyone who has gotten an interview invite yet?

Hi ygree001,

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions. I have a few questions for you.

Would you say that you are pretty satisfied with the program and the people at Temple so far?

Do they have on-campus or cheap housing available near the school?

If you achieve the requirements for getting into TUSM after ACMS, are you obligated to go to TUSM?

Thanks again,
M

I'm not in the program but I can definitely answer your last question. You aren't even allowed to apply to other schools if you are enrolled in this program. Apparently someone sent out an AMCAS to some other schools a few years back and got into deep s*** with administration. Basically they are committing a spot in the next year's medical school class to you. Likewise, it is understood that you will commit solely to them.

If you have any doubts about getting an MD from Temple or spending the next five years in a tough part of Philly this program is probably not for you. Just spittin' it real. This program is a sweet deal but you should at least have some desire to go to their school.

someone up there said its not too late to apply to this- but i just read that they have a minimum 3.3 gpa requirement. if i got way better on the mcat than their avg (31S) would i have any shot with a 3.1 gpa??

I am absolutely thrilled with the program, and I am very happy at Temple. It is a great program.
There is no housing at all. The med school is on the Health Sciences Campus, which is in a terrible neighborhood. Nobody lives right around school. A lot of people live in Center City or in various suburbs. Most people live within 20 - 40 minutes.
When you get start the program, you agree not to apply anywhere else. They hold a spot for you in next year's class, and you have to commit to them. For me, that was perfectly fine because it eliminated the stress of reapplying and the possibility of moving my family again just one year after moving to Philly. Besides, I have been really happy in Philly and at Temple.

How do you know that 31S is "way better than their average?" My assumption is that about half of those admitted will not have taken the MCAT yet (they will inevitably want some people to do the prep program) while the other half will have scores above 30, several of which will be way above 30.

ygree, two quick questions.

1) How did they let you know that you were invited for an interview: E-mail, phone, snail mail?

2) I know there are interview dates in May, June, July, but at what time of the month are the interviews conducted?

Many thanks.

About half of us already qualified for the MCAT requirement. At least a few people have significantly over 30. The other half need to take it again, which means they either never took it or didn't get the 30.

Thanks for the info! Only reason I ask is that I'll be in SA for the world cup at the end of June so I was a little worried about potentially missing the interview date. I literally applied the day the app came out in Feb tho so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a May interview...
