Tennesse?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think we were talking about this in another thread...someone said that they don't send out invites until the end of feb/beginning of march, and interview during their spring break, which I believe is the third week of march.

Exactly right. Interviews are currently set for March 14-21, but the last time we asked, they hadn't sent invites out yet.

If you're curious, last year they sent interview invites by email and mail, so in a week or so, make sure to carefully check junk mail folders.

Just curious, does Tenn. interview OOS or just IS?

They interview both the same week.

The only thing I've heard recently is that they lost all the GRE scores

Yes, I will admit the wait is a little frustrating. 🙁 But the school is really great. 🙂

Here's a list of what I think the best things about UTK are:

The clinicians are great and really accessible. I've been down in clinics so much with my dogs, and the clinicians are always patient, answer all my questions, encourage me to come an hang out when I'm not busy, etc. They're all really glad to tell you about their cases. It's very much a TEACHING hospital. I've had friends in on bald eagle wound care and tiger spays...like in the operating room.

You get hands-on animal experience first semester. We have a class called physical diagnosis where you get to do PEs on dogs, cats, horses, cows, and parrots. We also learn goat, sheep, pig and raptor handling.

Our mentor/mentee program is great. I had an hour and 45 minute lunch with my mentor last week. She totally rocks. Our big sib/little sib program is good too. My big took me out to lunch before classes started.

We have great summer opportunities. COE is a summer research program here in Knoxville that I'm doing this summer. It's for both first and second years. Last summer a couple of students went with our immunology/virology professor to Africa to study viruses in cheetahs. I'm doing a project this summer studying renal scintigraphy in cats with ureteral obstructions. We also partner with other vet schools to offer even more programs. They're really good at keeping you updated about what's available and making it open to everyone. Also there is anesthesia crew after second year where you basically get to be a fourth year anesthesiologist the summer after your second year.

We have 1 or 2 weeks of problem-based learning a semester. It's a great break from lecture and you learn a lot.

Starting second year you get a week a semester of clinical exposure during which you get to go down to a clinic area of your choice and spend a week there with a fourth year.

You do your first spay at the end of first semester second year, which is really cool, but crazy in that it will be me in less than a year.

The weather is really great. It got up to 60 degrees today. We've only had one bad weather day all winter.

It's a small to medium-sized city. It is and is not a college town. I wanted to live someplace where I could get away from the college when I wanted and be near it when I wanted. Knoxville definitely allows this.

The small class size. We just have 70 per class and you really get to know everyone.

The only bad thing:

Parking kind of sucks. Undergrads can park in our lots, so it's hard to leave during the day or come in after 9:30 and park. There are ways around it though.

What Pressmom forgot to mention was that all the admin and most of the teachers are insanely nice and will go out of their way to help you.

Also, although our buildings seem antiquated, they have state-of-the-art equipment. We are getting an MRI in the near future for instance. We have a hypobaric chamber for horses.

You get taught by the some of the best vets in their fields. Like Dr. Kennedy in virology (she's been in the news lately about the "new" parvovirus. And Dr. Legendre - just look him up online, he's pretty amazing.

What I don't like: The first year classroom is small and cramped. There's a rumor that my year will be stuck there again next year and that would be bad. The rate at which things get done around here is very very slow. Don't be surprised to hear of something new being announced and not happening for a few years. Football games congest the parking even more than usual.

I could go on and on about what I love about the school and will be glad to answer any questions you guys may have.

The dean came into class today and announced that he was signing the letters headed out to you guys. The interviews will be Friday March 14 and Monday-Thursday March 17-20. Good luck gals and guys! :luck:

Yay, that's exciting! 🙂 I hope there is one for me in that pile!🙂

Now that the interview invites are going out, I figure I'd bump this thread so if anyone has questions about where to stay, airports, rental cars, etc., they could be posted here and one of the three of us UTK students could answer them. When you get your snail mail letter (or maybe attached to your email) there's a letter about a 2nd year offering to match you up with a place to stay if you're OOS or from the far ends of TN. Just FYI.

I received my interview offer today via email, I am OOS. They scheduled my interview for March 17th.

Congrats! As far as on your other thread about oncology, surgery, and zoo...

Dr. Legendre is an oncologist here and you will have him first semester for small animal Physical Diagnosis and he is great! There are two cancer research projects available this summer for first and second years, and I'm sure there will be some next year.

Surgery, like others have said, you will be well prepared for anywhere. We do our first surgery first semester second year, though, which is cool.

Zoo: Dr. Schumacher is the bomb. He does pretty much everything cool for the zoo and tiger haven. You get him second semester first year for reptile anatomy. The exotics program is great and everyone gets multi-species medicine the third year which includes small mammals, birds, reptiles, primates, etc. The exotics clinic is also one of the easiest ones to drop in and out of at lunch. Drs. Jones and Greenacre are great too!

I look forward to meeting you at your interview.

Also, check your spam box because I was out with some friends talking between the last two classes and their interview invites went to the spam box.

got it today via email. OOS. March 17th!! yippie!!!!!

Zoo is Dr. Schumacher and Dr. Ramsey, actually, but both are cool, informed people that like talking to students.

I will be there March 19th for interviews all day if any SDNers are there. I'm also available if you have any questions (a welcome break to studying). Congrats to all who got an interview.

i got notice of my interview earlier too🙂

i got an interview too! yay!

I think I am going to decline my interview at UTK.🙁 The cost of tuition is just too high considering my other options. I think the school is great. The unique programs (exotics)and excellent teachers really piqued my interest. I really like the area too but an extra $100k in loans is just too much to overcome. Oh well, maybe I can come there for some advanced training later on.

Sorry I won't get to meet you nice UTK SDN people. 🙁

Good luck to everyone else with their interviews.:luck::luck:
Let me know how the school is.

Has anyone else had trouble accessing the TN web site? I've been trying to check on pre-reqs for the last couple days, and every time I get an error that says something like I'm an unauthorized visitor. I can get to the UTK site, but not anything on the vet med site. Maybe a current student knows if they're working on the web site or something?? Thanks!

I'm getting the same error! If you want to PM me what you need to know, I may be able to answer your question. I may be able to look it up in the password protected internal server.

How about general stuff? The stuff I was looking for might not even be on the website. I've been trying to find travel/hotel information, and the e-mail with the interview invite provides us with nada. Do you know anything about nearby hotels, transportation to/from the airport and school, and a possible schedule of events for the day? I know there's a tour at 9 AM, but I really hope that's not the only one because my interview is at 3:30 and I REALLY don't want to be waiting around and freaking out and doing nothing for five hours. Is there any kind of info session?

It's also not helpful that direct flights from NY to Knoxville start at $500.

Depending on how old you are and whether or not you can rent a car, it may be cheaper to fly into Nashville (3 hours away by car) and rent a car and drive here. (I know Enterprise used to rent to people over 21.) Gas prices are cheaper here than they are in New York, so it may be more economical to do that. Nashville has a lot of cheap carriers (southwest, etc) that Knoxville doesn't have. When I lived in Raleigh/Durham, I'd fly into Nashville instead of a closer airport to my parents house because it was just plain cheaper despite it being 2 hours away by car. (FYI, the Knoxville airport is actually in Alcoa, which is 20 minutesish south of Knoxville, but hotels may be willing to pick you up.)

As far as hotels, there are a lot along Kingston Pike (the major east/west thoroughfare) including Comfort Inns, Best Westerns, etc. Generally the west or north side of town is better to be in. I actually stayed out on Cedar Bluff for my interview at a Holiday Inn Express I think, which is a little further west than some of the hotels around West Town Mall. When I came to look at apartments over the summer, I stay in a Best Western off Merchants Drive in North Knoxville. Both were fine. I'd suggest checking hotels.com or priceline.com to get the best deal. Just stay in the west or north.

As far as hanging out during the day...there should be a lot of students around. I think my interview last year was at 2:00 PM and I came for the tour in the morning and just hung out with the students and found out about what my interviewers did before the interview. Last year, on the day I interviewed, a professor had made lunch for everyone. I don't know if that's happening this year, but if it's not, there's a small commissary in the vet school or "The Strip" is nearby and it has lots of places to eat. I'd be willing to run over to the strip with anyone who wants to on the days I'll be there.

PM me or post here with any more questions!

Wahoo, I got one too! 🙂

Now just to get everything together... Yay, good trouble to be in!

Yes, there is a morning info session with Dean Brace, and I really think you should attend. The tours were actually after the info session, so don't be late. After the info session, I waited just a bit for a tour. There will be several tours going on if it's like last year. You will also be given a whole lot of reading material, so the time passes pretty quickly.

I stayed at the Sheraton on Cumberland, right near the college. I don't recommend it, though. It was expensive, but besides that, my cosmetics were stolen by housekeeping.

Also, while you will want to dress professionally, bring comfortable shoes because there will be a bit of walking on the tour.

Thanks pressmom! After driving through Knoxville on the way home from Purdue, I am tres excited!

I know there is a tour at 9 - but of course, my interview is at 10. Will there be more?

EEEK YAY!

i hear you on the high costs, i'm in the same situation. i'm probably going to be traveling with my dad so with airfare alone i'm looking at over $800- however, it appears if you go to expedia or something like that and try to book a 'vacation package' that includes the hotel and car rental its a little over $800 for everything. i don't know if it would be cheaper for you if you're just going by yourself but it's worth investigating 🙂

Actually, I just decided to book a flight with a single stop--for half the cost. Thanks, though!

is anyone else having problems accessing the vet school's website?

I have an interview at UT on the 14th at 1:00...Should I be dressed for my interview at the 9:00 tour and session?

I would recommend bringing comfortable shoes for the tour and then changing to your dress shoes before the interview. I wore the same shoes, since they were boots, but the tour will be going through the large animal hospital and the floor will most likely be wet. Hope this helps!

It appears the website is still down. If you have any questions about particular programs that you are wondering about for your interview, PM me.

I have an interview at UTCVM on Thursday March 20th at 1:30 pm. I am needing some advice as to what to expect. I am freaking out! Please help!

I have an interview at UTCVM on Thursday March 20th at 1:30 pm. I am needing some advice as to what to expect. I am freaking out! Please help!

First, you will arrive and after being sure you are appropriately parked, you will be given a packet of information. Then Dean Brace will invite all the interviewees into the first year classroom, and he will give a talk, explaining how you were selected and what the process looks like from this point.

Then there will be informal tours given, and you will have lots of info to read. Students will be milling about, helping to answer your questions and helping you not to freak out. 🙂 As a matter of fact, I will be there on Thursday.

Lunch will likely be served and you will again have the opportunity to talk with current students and maybe some professors.

When it is time for your interview, you will be told which room to go to, and you will be greeted by 3 professors. The students you met earlier will likely have told you a bit about your interview team so you will know what type of personalities to expect.

Your actual interview is open file, except I believe your grades and GRE scores are not shown to the team. They will ask you questions about yourself, your application, and possibly some behavioral questions. You will undoubtedly be asked questions that are geared towards your interest areas, public health/zoonoses and any questions the interviewers have about you. It is pretty relaxed, but you will definitely need to be able to defend anything you said about yourself. Thus if you claim to want to be an exotics vet, you better know something about exotics.

After your interview, Dean Brace will want you to check in with him so he can clarify any outstanding prereqs, etc.

This is how it went last year anyway, hope it helps.

thank you so much for the info Critterifxer! that was the most info I have gotten from anyone, even a professor from UTCVM and a 2007 graduate! I am looking forward to meeting and talking with everyone on the campus. Can't believe it's only 2 weeks away! Maybe we can meet up. Do you know of any hotels near the campus? I will be coming up on Wednesday and spending the night, so as not to be rushed on thursday morning. I have a 2 hour drive. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Also, what do you wear for the tour? same suit as for the interview?

There are a lot of hotels not far from school. Depending on what kind of hotel you want, there are different options. Right off the main strip (Cumberland) there are several including a Holiday Inn. I would definitely suggest doing a search because there are quite a few in the area and if you shop around, you are more likely to get a good price. You could also look in the other direction if you don't mind driving farther to the interview.

For the tour, I'd suggest wearing the same thing, but either wearing comfy dress shoes or bringing a change of shoes. The large animal clinics are kind of wet, too, so keep that in mind. I vaguely remember there being grates, too where heels might or might not get stuck, but its been a while since I've been down there.

Got my rejection letter today in the mail. was expecting it... probably the harshest letter I've gotten thus far...

"It is with regret that I inform you that you will not be admitted to the College of Veterinary Medicine this year. Positions in the next class will be filled by applicants whose academic records surpass yours enough to make their selection possible through a favorable interview."

Ouch! It's bad enough that it's a rejection letter--I mean, we get the point that we didn't make the cut... totally unnecessary to be so candid. no offense to anyone who goes to Tenn. and then again... maybe the admissions person who wrote the letter was just having a bad day... but still...

Ugh! What terrible wording! I'm so sorry!

Wow. Did they let Dr. You Know Who write the letters this year? That's really harsh. 🙁

I promise that Tennessee does not usually come across that way at all.

That's really not necessary. As the saying goes, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." They really need to reconsider the wording of that letter.

That's awful, Sarah. 🙁 I'm so sorry! What meanies!

My gosh! That is way harsher than the rejection letters I have received. The formula is usually something like "We regret to inform....We have so many more applicants than positions and are unable to offer many qualified applicants positions....Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions....etc."
Man, ::hugs:: to you.

I've got to say, I'm pretty disappointed in UTK for that rejection. I expected tactful if nothing else. But maybe they didn't know how it would come across and we should let them know they were insulting. I'm really sorry Sarah.🙁

On a different note, if anyone is interested, last year I wrote down my questions after the interview and have them in word. if anyone is interested, please PM me with your email address and I will send you a copy (keep in mind, some of the questions are pretty specialized).

Hey guys,

thanks for the responses. honestly i wasn't that upset about it b/c i was expecting it and i'm really excited about going to Glasgow next year... I was just kind of shocked about the wording. might be a good idea for someone to tell them it was a bit much...

anyhow, congrats to all who did get interviews and good luck to you all!

Hey dyachei, I would love to take a look at those questions; I have my interview this Friday March 14th!! Very exciting, since I just received a rejection from U of MN. Ah well. Looking forward very much to UTK (it was my top choice anyway). Do you have any other advice about interviews? Thanks!
