judging by how the oos process is crawling, i wouldnt expect any e-mails to be comin your way exactly at midnight on the 15th...

It'll be more like this:

Adcom 1: "Hey weren't we going to admit some people today."

other adcom: "No, it's already 2 in the afternoon, we need to roll out of here in 2 hours and I'm still a bit buzzed from my 3 martini lunch."

Adcom 1: "and it's half way through the week, tommorow is pool party thursday, and don't forget Tiki Friday, I say we put it off till next Monday."

yeah my experience last year exactly, though I came off really liking the school. I remember the Temple tour bus coming late though, so we missed out on a lot of what the school had to offer in that town.

Meh, the really long day and Filo's somewhat true, but also somewhat contrived, attitude kind of put me off. But still, i liked it more than other schools and definitely wouldn't have turned it down if it was my only only.

How you liking Dallas potato??? We just got done with our first block down here and I'm thinking i'm getting a hang of this whole med school thing...lets hope i can keep it up

Also, is anybody interviewing at UTMB this friday??? If so, i may end up seeing you at the night before thingy, if you go to it

GL to all

Mid 30's MCAT and average GPA (3.6) would make you a pretty superhuman applicant in Texas, at least.

I've been thinking about this. [Leaving us all open for attack] Are we lesser applicants than OOS's? Most of us apply in-state only. We have soo many schools and such high in-state acceptance quotas. Are we just ridiculously lucky?

The average MCAT and GPAs are pretty much on average for the rest of the country... I don't think it's THAT much easier to get in if you're from Texas. But if you do want to stay here, having so many schools makes it easier to find a school that fits your personality.

i don't think we're all necessarily less smart than OOS schools/applicants. i think you're right that our 90% in state quota brings in a more diverse group but it doesn't appear to affect the caliber of UT med students.

also let's not forget that texas is the best state ever.

Well, I sure hope you early birds left some interview spots for the procrastinators.

August MCATer or no? Cuz if no, I'd be wondering what you've been doing all this time..

So other than the guy assuming adcoms to be a bunch of lazy folks, for the rest of us... any thoughts on THE day/night: midnight of the 14th?

I don't think that anything will come at midnight on the 15th. I bet that any offers that are handed out will go out via snail mail on the 15th. Although, most/all of our interview offers were sent out via email, so it is possible that they could go out via email on the 15th. Has anyone asked their premed advisor about it? I don't really get to campus anymore, so I don't really have the chance to.

My guess is the offers will begin the day of the 15th, just like they did with the OOSers on 10/15.

FYI, just called A&M and was told that so far only one acceptance has been offered and OOS will start to receive offers on Nov (11/15?)

Good luck everyone!

where was everyone's hardest interview?

mine was at utsa, my interviewer gave me no questions, just value statements that i had to expand upon and i wasn't able to read him at all...

mine was also at UTSA. i had an interviewer grill me, plus numerous interruptions from phone calls, followed by a couple of hypothetical/ethical questions. it was doable, but more stressful compared to my other interviews.

I made a tiny mistake on my TMDSAS listing a random non sci course as 4 hours instead of 2, it's too small to change my GPA, but I figure I should notify TMDSAS anyway just to keep things simple when they finally check my coursework record.

Do you think that schools that have already finished looking at my application and have made a decision (post interview) will reopen my application because of this minor correction or will they just blow it off because it's insignificant?

It sucks that TMDSAS doesn't take care of all the verification of coursework stuff before they send the apps out like AMCAS does.

hey BG, this thread giving you memories of last cycle? haha

yeah I liked Filo a ton last year, but you can't base your decision to attend on someone who figures so very little into your overall education.

School's alright so far. The past couple weeks were pretty intense with exams, but now it's not so bad and I'm getting used to it. But it feels like I've been in school forever when it's barely been 2 months. 😱

This thread is killing me. I've already been dying for Nov. 15 to pass so that I can have a chance at getting an admissions letter. Now I've simultaneously gotten my hopes up that I might hear back right on the 15th and resigned to the fact that more than likely that won't happen. I'm not even sure if I'll get an early acceptance anywhere but here's to hoping that I don't have to wait till FEB for an answer. ugh. :meanie: 😀

I'm an OOS that applied to UTSW (among other TX schools). I have competitive stats but haven't heard anything. I know that interview season there is winding down and UTSW is my top choice for med school. Would sending them an email (or letter) indicating my interest be a good idea?

Thanks!

Just curious...
Did any of yall call the Admissions Office for the status of your application? I am afraid they might have misplaced or lost a transcript, etc...

Who cares what we did! Call!

There are ~1,200 seats available for med students for 2007 of all med schools in TX. So far I have seen about 3 people on SDN been accepted. Look like rain comes late this year in Texas or they are putting a massive lotto program to launch.

I want to go to the "ISLAND". LOL

You're aware that the absolute earliest that Texas residents could hear about acceptance is November 15th, right?

Sorry I found it really funny that you had to point this out. I just assumed the OP was OOS since they didn't know that.

Nov 15th thing doesn't apply to OOS, right?

Nice... wish I could have applied there...

That much is part of the Texas in-state rules and regulations... all TX state schools get to charge students who get at least $1000 of scholarship as if they were in-state students. Does anybody know whether Baylor follows that same guideline?

I have been looking for more info on this and I haven't seen it in writing anywhere... does anyone have a source?

They all said that at interviews. Honestly, I'm skeptical. What's the point in charging OOS higher tuition if they just find ways not to charge it? Since the average TX school takes about 20 (10% of 200) OOS students, and the difference between in-state and OOS tuition is about 20k, why would they just give up that $400k? It's not like they have trouble filling their classes.

But, pretty much everybody DID say that it happens.

You're right -- it's bizarre -- but here's the link:
http://www.thecb.state.tx.us/reports/pdf/0183.pdf

And the quote: (from the bottom of p20)
Coordinating Board Rules, Chapter 21, Subchapter B, Section 21.26(b)(4):
(A) Nonresidents (including citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. and all foreign students) who receive eligible competitive scholarships from their institutions totaling at least $1,000 may be granted a waiver of nonresident tuition for the period of time covered by the scholarship, not to exceed 12 months.

I think this is a case where the schools don't care where the money comes from; I'm not sure, but it might be the case that the state pays the cost differential for students who pay instate tuition. If this is the case, the schools are essentially using abusing well meaning provision (intended to assist schools in attracting really qualified candidates without directly shelling out a lot of money which could endanger their budgetary stability) of state law to screw the TX taxpayers into footing the bill for out of state students, thereby allowing the schools to attract students of a higher caliber, who might have attended elsewhere if the tuition wasn't as attractive. I say abusing because many schools hint that they give this to almost every oos student.

Even if the schools aren't payed by the state on a per instate student basis, the school's would be able to use the resulting budgetary shortfalls to justify increases in state funding in subsequent budgets.

Touche. Ok well good. Just checking. 😀

God Nov. 15th is a scary date. Although, realistically, there probably won't be that much happening then.

Yay! I just got an interview invite from Southwestern for Nov 11.

Yeah, I didn't doubt that it was that law, what I doubt is how many OOSers actually get $1000+ scholarships. The other one that I have heard is that some schools (heard this a lot at Baylor) will give you residency after 1 year. This seems contrary to [at least the spirit, if not also the letter] of residency law.

Good point though, somemaybedoc, it may be the case that the state does pick up the difference <shrug>.

I would love to get chapter-and-verse on this; although Baylor has verified my residency status, TMDSAS still hasn't, and if I have to defer a year due to husband-PhD-delays, I really don't know what my status will be.

I am a borderline applicant. Barely 3.0 Science GPA, 3.3 Overall and a 27 (combined MCAT). This being sad, I still hope to have a chance at a TX Medical School. I haven't gotten a single interview, and I applied to ALL the medical schools in TX. I have gotten out-of state interviews. (I went back and got a Master's and I also have solid work experience so I think they've appreciated that.)

Any recommendations on improving my chances? I have already started emailing/calling in. I think I'll send a formal letter, as well.

I went to an out-of-State school and my advisor doesn't really know much about the TX system. 🙁

I don't want to ask if I stand a good chance for a TX school b/c I know sometimes it's just a shot in the dark. But any recommendations on how to further my chances?

(I am very much an over-represented minority and female.)

You have a chance. Your stats are just a tad below the average for Texas, but if you applied early enough, you should get an interview somewhere. Did you apply to TCOM?

woohoo i got a UTSW interview... they are really on top of their game, since i just was completed 2 days ago! it's organized schools like this that make me think highly of the process... everyone shoudl be like them, haha.

Not much that you can do for this cycle, I'm afraid. For next cycle, do a post-bac, retake the MCAT, and apply early.

UTSW gives out automatic interviews to applicants with very high GPA and MCAT. if you don't belong in that category then UTSW really does have their act together.

in either case, congrats on the invite! UTSW rocks. i'd give my left kidney to go there.
