we made it to bottom of second page, so not anymore.

march 15 is right around the corner, anyone happy.

I was thinking that file review would look good but just wasn't sure, thanks.

what is the significance of march 15th?

well that's when other schools (non-tmdsas and nonrolling) accept people, so that will mean movement on the waitlist if they accept alot of tx people.

so anyone doing anything tight for the weekend.

I called TTU to check on the waitlist status this afternoon.

The admissions advisor said that the waitlist was not ranked, as most applicants had similar GPA and MCAT numbers. He indicated that no movement from the waitlist had occurred yet. The movement will be highest during late March, earlyl April. He said it was difficult to guess movement numbers, since it seemed to cycle from year to year. Last year was a slow, minimal movement year, if the nonsensical cycling continues.

He indicated that he would post movement on the TTU SOM website.

Hey guys!
I was just curious about anyone who applied waiting for an august mcat score? I have to reapply next year but I am worried that I won't get an interview due to the tx application sys. Also any input about what ut houston or utmb likes in an applicant? My husband is doing a phd at ut houston so it's preferred I stay close. Any input?
Thanks in advance

Yeah, check the old "TMDSAS" thread from this year: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=133577 - you'll see that around October there were a lot of applicants who received their August MCAT scores, and many of them were accepted this year.

As for UTH and UTMB students...whew, your guess is as good as mine. The best advice I ever got for applying for medical school was "Find your niche...like a scarab beetle." Basically, they're looking for a diverse student body, who will take up different areas of medicine/ serve different communities. But they're also looking for bragging rights (numbers). And then a lot of it is up to chance. Keep browsing this forum, do well in school/ on the MCAT, have a bit of luck (okay, a LOT of luck), and know yourself and that's about all that is in your control. Good luck! :luck:

Yeah, pretty much... they're looking for a pilot, a veteran with leadership abilities, a bouncer-type who knows his way around welding tools, and a faceman. You've got to have your own van, and a crop duster is a plus. http://stuffo.howstuffworks.com/a-team-finding.htm 😎

Wow! I love how schools tell you everything you already know. 🙄
Yeah, really. 🙄

true blue said:
Did they give you the impression that you had a shot in coming off of the waitlist?
No. It looked pretty grim. ALl the advice they gave was for reapplying, but I don't think that means anything, pertaining to the waitlist.
true blue said:
I heard they are "gestapo-like" (courtesy jbp  ) with info like that. They won't tell anyone anything about it (i.e. # of people on it, ranked or not, your ranking, waitlist mvmt, etc etc -- info from earlier posts in this thread). Dunno why they are so secretive. 😕
Somebody hypothesized earlier that it was because they want to fill a vacated spot with someone similar, for diversity's sake.

If that's the case, I have to wait for some poor, asian, single mother of three with average stats to give up her spot. 🙄

so there's something called a file review. I have never heard of it. How can i ask a school and whom do i ask to do it. should i ask a school where I am waitlisted.
I'm not sure if the other schools offer this, but for TCOM, I just e-mailed the admissions office. they didn't start doing them until March, so I just got mine. It was prety helpful, even though the major points they made were things I already knew. Somehow, I feel that if I worl on those points, I would have a good shot of getting in next year. One of my listed "strengths" was determination. 👍
It wouldn't hurt to ask at the schools you were rejected/waitlisted from.

Also, and I hate to pressure you, but try to keep your GPA as perfect as possible this spring (I know, easier said than done). My gpa started out pathetic (ie, my first semester science gpa was HALF of what my last semester's science gpa turned out to be), but when TCOM reviewed my file at the end of the interview day, the lady said they were very impressed at my improvement. You've got a busy life, understandably, but you will have a lot to be proud about if you can do well academically this semester. :luck:
I agree. I want to go out with a bang. My fall grades weren't so great, and this spring, I'm struggling with molecular. Other than that, I should have decent grades. Ironically, for the classes that count toward graduation, my GPA is around 3.4-3.5; not a bad showing for the single mouse mom, I think. 🙂

Even though my file review didn't say so, I'll probably apply post-bacc to TCOM, and try to work my @ss off this summer for the clinical experience. Doing well in post-bacc will help my GPA situation, and they set aside seats in the entering class especially for those students. 👍 At least in the interview, I can say that I've addressed the issues thy pointed out as my weaknesses.

thehopeful said:
UNTlabrat and baylorshannon, are you guys on the waitlist and still asked them for a file review. do you think they may get a negative perception of that or something like that.
No. The office themselves told me about it when they said I was waitlisted. I think it shows that I care about the subtle differences between "accepted" and "waitlisted." If I do the things they suggest, and reapply, it shows that I really want to go to their school. If I get a job soon, I plan on sending them an update, as well as my transcript with my final grades, and repeated letters of intent with each update. If I start working on this now, who's to say I can't get pulled off the list? 👍

"determination" was one of my strong points, BTW

seev99 said:

Why, it's the Ides of March..... 😉 😀

I better get started on a couple of letters of intent/desire to attend the waitlist schools. I don't really know if it will help, but it certainly can't hurt.

I went to TCOM in person for a waitlist discussion. My hope was that expressing my desires in person, face-to-face, would be better than a "when will you call me" letter. Augmenting that with a letter is probably a good idea.

I'd really like to save $20K+ a year and stay in Texas.

I hear you (about TX tuition).

I'm debating on whether I need to apply out-of-state as well, for the next cycle. I really have my heart set on TCOM.

I did cast a wider net this second time around.

out of state=more expensive 👎

in state rejection=no doc

My thought was $100K additional moolah is certainly painful 👎. Not becoming a physician was just more painful.

That is perfect - I can definitely see why they listed "determination" as one of your strengths (and, frankly, I think it's pretty obvious that determination counts a LOT when applying to med school, tho I know you're feeling frustrated at this moment). I can totally see you getting your heart's desire, especially with your perseverance. :luck:

w'd up everybody.

anyone know when a&m is suupose to make a rank list.

anyone watching college ball, it's a nailbiter everynight, and so fun to watch, eventhough i haven't heard the name of some of the schools.

Hi all!

Hope everyone is enjoying their Spring Break! 😀

Since I don't get one, I must live vicariously through you guys so be sure you do something totally outrageous!!!! 👍 👍 👍

Don't get excited too quick folks. I called Baylor last Wednesday and was told by someone in the admissions office that letters would go out within two or three weeks. Which is ridiculous considering how long they've been done interviewing and is hopefully incorrect. Who knows, the lady I spoke with didn't really sound like she knew what was going on. Anyhow, good luck, I'm waiting to hear as anxiously as you guys are.

Baylor sucks...possibly the worst AMCAS school I interviewed at. They told me my application is still under review and I will hear back from them shortly...yeah if I get accepted there's no way I'm going...blah. Sorry guys 🙁

You betcha! I'll be hanging out with some fellow SDNers, so I'll be sure to post blackmail pics.....er, pics of innocent fun. 😛 👍

I'll also be working and spending time in the lab. It sucks that this is the first year that my kids don't have the same spring break that I do. 🙁

Shhh! I'm trying to get them to pick Baylor for a REASON. :meanie:

hey guys,

I was wondering what exactly you guys were putting into your letters of interest if you are going to write them at all? A couple of my friends went in person to the Dean's office at the schools they were waitlisted at, but I'm not really sure what I would say or if that is even a good idea...

Hey there redd,
I just had 2 paragraphs. The first was re-stating my interest in their school, including a couple of points that I particularly liked, and thanking them again for interviewing me. In this paragraph I also expressed slight regret over being waitlisted, but emphasized being optimistic.

In the 2nd paragraph, I talked about my research and what i was doing with it. I also included a small copy of the poster of my research that I presented at a conference. I assume you won't have the exact same story, but try to update them on something that you're doing/working on, whether it's research, service, leadership, or whatever.

I close the letter with a sentence stating that I am looking forward to hearing from them.

I hope this helps, best of luck to you! :luck:

I just wanted to post that the schools know where you matched. I found out first hand. I'm not sure whether that's good or not.

What happened dude?

In fact, look at this as a good thing. It means you are competitive enough to get into one school and maybe another one will want to "steal" you later on.

Good luck!

Good morning........bump

Hey guys...I know I've posted this notice before, but I will be showing resumes to my boss tomorrow, so if anyone else is interested please send your resume to the email address below. Thanks...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Everyone,

I will be leaving my job as a research technician in the Baylor Neonatology Department at Texas Children's Hospital. We are looking for someone to replace me in May 2005 and I wanted to see if there are any interested pre-meds/or otherwise interested candidates in the Houston area who might want some research experience. This may be an excellent opportunity for reapplicants to enhance their resume.

The position is in a microbiology/immunology lab working with rat and mouse models to test various means to treat/prevent various types of bacterial infections. I've had many opportunities to shadow teams of neonatologists in the NICU, which has given me incredible perspective on the field I hope to eventually enter. I've had vivid and meaningful experiences to share during interviews as a result of being exposed firsthand to some of the issues we are working on in our lab. Also, I have been invited to attend countless pediatrics lectures at Baylor and have learned a great deal.

Availability: Starting in May 2005
Hours: 40/wk
Location: Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, TX
Employer: Baylor College of Medicine
Salary: ~$22,000/year
Requirements: No prior knowledge/experience necessary.

I have really enjoyed this job and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in going to medical school. If you're interested, please either send me a private message on SDN or email me at [email protected]. Sending your resume would be helpful.

Thanks!

-MLewis

No news yet..I was thinking about calling friday or early next week depending on how ambitious I feel.....

Got a nice little letter from Baylor: "We regret that we are unable to extend an invitation to interview you for a position in the 2005 entering class."

Hmm, I've known that since last year 🙄

Just wondering if anyone's heard from UTSW about waitlist status?

I'm still waiting 😳 Does anyone know when in March we are supposed to hear?

Anyone heard any good news yet? 🙂
Hi getunconscious 😍 How are you? Having a good spring break so far?

I hope we start hearing more stuff from the schools soon. I think people should start hearing about UTSW and Baylor soon (like hopefully in the next two weeks). I am hoping for a subsequent trickle-down effect to the other schools 😀

Off for my post-work glass of wine. 🙂

{and back to my regularly scheduled praying that Baylor takes all Texas peeps 😛 }

Hi fotolilith! 😀

How's it goin'?

So.... I am bored at work today and decided to call some schools and here is the info. I got..I called TAMU, SA and Tech..There has been no waitlist movement so far. All schools said movement wouldn't occur until mid-april, early may. TAMU and Tech said it is hard to predict if any movement will occur until mid-late april, SA said they anticipate some movement..So much for March..Hurry up April!

Hey I have been meaning to post this for a while, but keep forgetting it.

I talked to lane, I PM'd him. He was really cool. He said he was only on waitlist at one school, UTSA. He got off the waitlist on may 11, so that's pretty late in the game.

Klippy, so they said they can't be sure how much movement will be until mid-april. It's funny but didn't they say that they won't know until mid-march a while ago. I feel like we are getting the run-around. I agree april please come sooner this year.

if ifailedmcat is visiting this thread, your PM box is full.

so are most people gonna start filling out their application on may 1, eventhough there's potential that they can hear in may.

People who are in SW anb baylor should choose baylor cause it's more known outside of texas and b/c it'll help them in residency. who agrees with me.

I am surprised that getunconcsiou and blueorchid did not get an interview invite from baylor, that's cold. especially since they interviewed and accepted people with lower or similar stats this year. I feel your pain.
