Don't forget that race will also be considered next year, further increasing the remaining competition. Some schools unofficially consider race now (allegedly). Check out Baylors % spread. Given the high Texas hispanic population, I can see the reasoning for other perspectives. Please no URM ranting on this nice, peaceful thread.

Not to apply outside of Texas is just plain silly. If you really want it, do whatever it takes. Even if the cost is $100K more. I tried that the first year, was borderline, then cast a wider application net this year. Two OOS acceptances and two Texas waitlists. Given the current rate of compensation, the lost income from sitting out a year or two will more than offset the increased cost for OOS.

Hi Ortho! Congrats on your Out of State Acceptances!! =) Which schools did u get accepted to?

JAMP = Joint Admission Medical Program
this program was started in fall 02, i remember i tried to apply fall 01 and they said i was a year early. basically it's another assured acceptence program.

hey if i have to reapply, can you tell me which schools to apply out of state where i have a good chance of getting in. I think i'm may be a bit over borderline so which schools.

Okay i know we don't want to make this a MD vs. DO thread but I'm gonna put a link to another SDN section where someone who's a DO wrote he's feeling aobut it.

so read and share your thoughts:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=2207661#post2207661

(read the second post, i think this guy has the experience to back up the claims.)

and i think i may have posted this before if so sorry.

Interviewed: UAMS (rej.), OSU COM (w/l), TCOM (w/l), TTU HSC (w/l)

Accepted: NSU COM, GA-PCOM

As you might guess, I personally like the DO approach. My ugrad grades sucked in the pre-med crowd (3.2, non-trad, BSME). Masters work in engr. and PB = 3.8. Even though engineering is considered tougher by some, the number ***** schools don't care.

First off... Happy Birthday Kilppy!

Hope ya'll don't think I'm a dork, but I just wanted to update our waitlist LIST (w/ ppl that withdrew their spots, and those pulled off) 😛

hey kiwi, what do you mean one spot open.

I guess none of them have had to calculate how much coax to cut for a matching stub given a smith chart and a pencil. Or how to adjust the attitude of a satellite in three dimensional space given the Z-transform for the satellite.

I think kiwi means that whoever is being thanked for the open spot dropped their spot at that school. so jdovez dropped her/his spot at UT-Houston.

 :scared: 😕 😱

Don't know much about coax, but the dynamics sure rings a faint bell. I could dig out some Reynolds numbers, and talk lift, drag, cam acceleration, TDC, and balance a piping network . . . naah, I'll just have a beer and watch Formula 1 at 7pm on Speed (Channel).

. . . and I still don't know how to use a slide rule.

I was just about to say that! =)

If anyone else removes their waitlist spot or accepted spot at a TEXAS school, please update the list! 😛

I'm sure by May 15th, there should still be some open spots!

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

I'm taking my favorite mother out to brunch (my wife). A w/l acceptance (for me) would make her week too.

I was being a wise guy. In my senior level communications theory class, we had to use a rather bizarre looking chart to calculate how long a piece of coaxial cable would have to be to simulate an antenna of given electrical characteristics (i.e. wavelength). It's been too many years since I've done it, but it hurt and was not for the faint of heart. Same thing with adjusting the attitude of a satellite in 3 dimensional space. We used a rather interesting mathematical construct known as a Z-transform (if you've had fourier or laplace transforms (my favorite) it's sorta kinda similar). I didn't like it to much as it was mainly a case of manipulating an equation into a given formula and then extracting the answer. I much preferred being able to derive the equation myself and come up with an answer. It was fun but on the outer edges of theory as far as I was concerned. I always wanted to ask,"How do you go down to the store and select the resistor/capacitor sizes to cause this equation to work?". Never did though.....Like I said, it's been a while....

Oh, you are going to be a hoot in class, Dave...simply a hoot.

It's a good thing I've already met you, or I would say that I need an interpretor to talk to you! 😉

There are a lot of potential reasons why. Maybe I want to get a feel for how TX apps go, since I'll probably apply to some TX schools.

I was thinking of filling the 2006 app today, but it's not due until Oct 15, with supporting info by Nov 1. Is there a good reason to do it early? Since they're not rolling, it doesn't really matter, does it?

Actually, I think that out of state applicants are now admitted on a rolling basis so if you're not a TX resident, you might want to get it in as early as you can. It's probably still good to apply early even for non-rolling schools because later on there will be more competition for fewer interview slots. Good luck to you.

Defintely apply early, especially since you are out of state! I know you will love it in Texas 😀

I'm pulling for you guys too!! :luck:

And happy mother's day from me as well...I know our mothers will be proud of us no matter what. 🙂

Huh? They don't accept anyone until Match Day, do they?

I have heard that out-of-state applicants can hear back before match day (perhaps to compete with AMCAS schools that have rolling admissions).....can anybody else confirm this? 😕

Hell, yeah. Get in the earliest interviews you can. Remember my file review? Why would they suggest I get in the cycle early? I've heard it from my advisor, too; that med schools have "filled most of their seats by August," meaning that, even though non-rolling, they've decided on some applicants before the second admin of MCAT. And since you're not waiting on MCAT scores to be released, you could be in the first round of interviews (don't they start in June?)

Yep, it says so right on the first page.

OFFERS OF ACCEPTANCE for non-Texas residents will no longer be made through the admission matching process. All TMDSAS medical schools may begin making offers of acceptance to non-Texas residents on a rolling admission basis beginning October 15th of each application cycle.

How long do you think it will take for schools to start making selections, assuming people give up those seats on or before 5/15? Given my experiences thus far, I think it might take 2-5 days to make the initial round of offers. Then the trickle down may take even longer (for second or third round offers). Then again, some "no thanks" responses will be instant.

Anybody look at last years movement timing?

Last year's thread for what? I can't imagine I would have a much easier time finding it myself. 🙂

There's a question in the app that says something like:

Has your education or vocation ever been interrupted? If yes, describe the circumstances below.

Would 9 years of military between undergrad and med school be the sort of thing they're looking for, or are they looking for interruptions of undergrad?

I think they want to know if undergrad or a steady job was interrupted. If you completed undergrad and then went into the military, I believe you can leave that field blank since there is another section in the app asking you to account for your time since graduating from high school.

Call or e-mail TMDSAS to be sure.

Warning about calling TMDSAS -- they may be rude to you (this has happened to several of us on more than one occasion). If you are a sensitive person, send an e-mail. 😉

oh when you said you can't tell, i presumed you went to the thread and checked but i guess you said it from what you knew. I thought if had went to the thread, then maybe you can post it.

but it's no big deal, i'll try to find it after exams.

I think that's just a spot to explain what may be perceived as 'questionable' lapses in enrollment. It took me ten years to get through undergrad; I had some explailning to do. For instance, I had to drop classes a couple of semesters to work full time, and then there was the 'pregnant with Amber' thing that seemed to take up nearly two semesters....😀 I don't think I would worry too much about your situation. 🙂

Besides, if anybody says anything, just whip out the pilot stick. 😉

I noticed their website was very rude. It's funny when you can identify a corporate culture that easily.
