Any advice on those waitlisted. You were WL'd at TAMU last year, right? I am this year. Any words of wisdom?trauma_junky said:Or you are a URM 😉

Thanks for posting that! Did the school tell you this directly (probably not) or was this deductive reasoning? What if you aren't URM or WASP?trauma_junky said:What a well read individual. yes I was waitlisted at TAMU last year. If you look at their match, they have accepted at least 10 over their anticipated class size. This is due to the direct undergrad acceptance program they offer and a fear of not filling slots. They also have slots saved for specific applicant types (URM's). So, if a URM moves on, they move up another URM. If a WASP moves on, they move up another WASP. I love TAMU and Scott & White and feel it provides a Medical Student atmosphere second to none. Good luck.
PS. as far as residency is conscered, that is a different story.
What is up Evo! Ya, busy with the new job, family, and life. Trying to get into shape to enter the Army as an Officer if need to be. My brother-in-law is a 2nd LT with the 2-69 Armor in the 3rd ID. He says that things in the middle east can sway either way, especially with Russia supply nuclear material to Iran and China corting the Carribean, the world is a very unstable place. I still have the desire to be an MD one day, but a new more immenient calling has landed on me. I sit at dinner with clients or at home with my family and think: This is all possible because of the sacrifices of Americans before us. There are young men living in hell in Iraq right now to (in some way no matter how you see the current conflict) secure our freedom for future generations. I feel almost guilty for enjoying my freedoms as an American.EvoDevo said:Hey TJ. Long time no see man.

Why bother ranking the list then, right?
AAAGGGHHH!!! I just don't get it!
🙂
Yes, I was told the list would be ranked by late February or mid-March. 😕trauma_junky said:Wow! They rank it now? This is new, but you are right. Why rank something if it is predetermined anyway.

I was thinking about e-mailing one of the interviewers that I really hit it off with but I wasn't sure if that was appropriate. Is that what you did?trauma_junky said:Email the hell our of Filo and your interviewers. Constanly bug them about your position and where you are if they rank the list. You are not a URM or a WASP? What catagorical ethnic group do you fall in then? We must label everyone!
Hell ya! Dr. Patterson and I talked College Football for a half hour after the offical interview was over. He was so behind with all the other interviews because of my interview. He liked me, but my second interviewer was a part timer. All he focused on was my academic record. He asked if i considered carribean schools. I wanted to hit him in the mouth. His job was not tome question my academic record, that was already considered acceptable by the selection committee. He was a real downer and the reason I was not accepted out right. This was confirmed by a friend of mine that now works at the med school, and other sources at TAMU. So, email your favorite interviewer a lot! The gut was a damn DO too, lousy bastard. Our company patent attorney is also a pediatric surgeon (only 14 fellowship positions nation wide a year!) She is going to help me during my next app cycle! Woot Woot!true blue said:I was thinking about e-mailing one of the interviewers that I really hit it off with but I wasn't sure if that was appropriate. Is that what you did?

Good for you! It's nice when people help you out like that because they believe in you. 🙂trauma_junky said:Hell ya! also... this is probably a dumb question... and the answer is prob obvious... but what is a WASP or URM??
One of my interviewers and i hit it off so well that in January I went back and shadowed her and I still e-mail back and forth to her. So i don't think they mind you e-mailing them. It can't hurt.thehopeful said:I wanna e-mail my interviewer and see if they can be an advocate for me. can i do that. there's at least one person i can think of at all the interviews where I thought it went well, so ya'll think i should e-mail 'em.

I filed FAFSA and my EFC is 12,000. It will affect the loan amount that you are eligible for (i.e. for you and me, it will decrease). You will have to do a change in status type thing for them to be able to allocate more money if you get in. All in all, you should be OK. I know I don't have $12,000 that I can readily fork over. I think the US Department of Education is smoking some really good crack. 🙂kilppy said:Have any other waitlisters filled out your fafsa yet? My EFC is 15,000 and that is just with my income..Does anyone have any idea how this is going to affect my loans if I do get pulled from a waitlist..I know there is a thread for this but I'd rather see if y'all know
Yeah, I hear you man. Even though I've already served, I still think about going back from time to time. I'll tell you this: the time that you serve on active duty is time lived @ 110%. In civilian life it sometimes feel that you're only half alive. If you do decide to serve then I think you'll really like it. However, it won't do anything to get you into med school. Just an FYI.trauma_junky said:What is up Evo! Ya, busy with the new job, family, and life. Trying to get into shape to enter the Army as an Officer if need to be. So you're going to re-apply? I think that's great. Are you retaking the MCAT too? I re-took mine in April and that immediately got me an acceptance off a waitlist, more interviews, and an acceptance to UTHSCSA (with your favorite Dean 😉 ). Glad to see that you're still around.trauma_junky said:So, I am working as a clinical specialist for a company that has and adult Intraosseous infusion system on the market, raising a family, and preparing for many other things in the mean time. I hope I never have to leave my family for military service, but if I am needed, I will respond and go early so I can enter as an officer.
So, now that everyone knows my past life story, how have you been?
I am so sorry to hear that. 😳D_LOVE said:So I called UT-H finally...and bad news. Since when does 30/3.9 not even get waitlisted there? Interviews were great! Something just doesn't feel right about all this.

Blue Orchid said:I got rejected from UT-H too, with a 3.75/32. I thought I clicked pretty well with one of my interviewers, too...but apparently that wasn't enough. In general my interviews were mediocre, nothing outstanding...now I wish I'd prepared more. 🙁
true blue said:I am so sorry to hear that. 😳
You have great stats and that sucks! Are you waitlisted anywhere else or have you already been accepted somewhere?
Good luck to you!
ilona said:Did you get letter of rejection, or you called? What's their number? May be I should call..... 😕
D_LOVE said:I matched with UTMB, but I really don't think that is where I want to be (hence, why it was fourth out of four on my list). I am hoping I get accepted to University of Southern California...and give up my spot in Galveston for somebody who wants it much more than I do.
ilona said:I want your spot! can you call them and tell them you are giving it to me?? 😀
D_LOVE said:I called 713-500-5116. They said a letter should be received in a couple weeks. Can't wait!
ilona said:I just called, not on the waitlist 🙁
D_LOVE said:Sorry to hear that...I know the feeling. I guess we'll just have to wait it out. Did you get waitlisted at UTMB?
ilona said:Yes, I got the letter saying I am on their wait list, but what confused me was that they said that if applicant accepts the offer in any other school, they are automaticly taken off the waitlist. I accepted TCOM just in case, but it sux if that automaticly took me of UTMB waitlist.
med school is what you make of it - you can easily hole yourself up in the library and study 24/7 to get great grades if you want. you can also drink yourself into oblivion and cram before exams to pull straight Cs. or you can find a happy balance between working hard and playing hard. don't think that the school itself dictates your fate as a physician - you do.D_LOVE said:It's not that I dislike UTMB or the city that much...It's just that I've worked so hard for four years and wanted to go somewhere better. I don't mean somewhere in the top ten or anything. Just somewhere with better resources like UT-H or USC, for instance.
Also, my experience with UTMB students (night before interview) and on these threads make them sound like a joke. People get excited like UTMB is Galveston social hour. The fraternity idea sounds ridiculous to me. I'm in a fraternity now at Texas Tech, but I plan to put these days behind me and grow up. I'm going to med school to become a physician...not to go to some joke toga party.

last i checked all those students who graduated from UTMB got the same degree as every other med student in texas.
if you're that jaded about the school you may as well give up your spot now to someone who will appreciate the opportunity to become a doctor and take your chances with institutions where you feel you'll be happy.
D_LOVE said:I'll take what I get and roll with it. I'm not saying that graduating from UTMB will give me any less of a degree. But do you think that UTMB or even UTHSCSA provide the same amount of resources and exposure as do other schools? I do not.
In any sense, I'm just bitter about the whole process. If I end up at UTMB, I'll prove myself for four more years. I don't dislike the school or the city...just this crazy admissions stuff.
amy2003uva said:dlove - how did you like tech as an undergrad? did you get waitlisted at tech SOM? i was just wondering what you felt about the school in general, seeing as i went to UVA for undergrad and will be spending four years at tech. 🙂
D_LOVE said:Tech is really what you make of it. I moved from Dallas to Lubbock and wasn't all that happy with the location at first. I guess I just missed the bigger city. I realized soon that Lubbock has great people and a surprisingly good atmosphere for students. I have loved my four years here, and would do it all over again.
As for the SOM...I haven't got anything, so I assume that I was not waitlisted. I decided that I would stay at UTMB anyways. Lubbock is okay...but four more years might be pushing it.
thehopeful said:hey, you are still on the waitlist at the schools you ranked above yours even if you accepted the offer. so you can still get off the waitlist befroe may 1 or may 15 (can't remember)
i can't speak for utmb, but uthscsa has every resource i would want from a school - accessible faculty and administration, diverse clinical and research opportunities, and (most importantly) great people. it sounds like you're getting too caught up in the schools' reputations when in reality they all provide a quality education, match very well into competitive specialties, and prepare you for a career in medicine.D_LOVE said:I'll take what I get and roll with it. They do this every year. They did it last year too.thehopeful said:OKAY I GOT SOME REALLY BAD NEWS:
I hear that UTH has accpeted ~230-240 people for class of 200, so that means 30-40 people have got to tell them no before any waitlist movement occurs.
and UTMB said they have 230 for class of 200 as well.
and TAMU said 91 for class of 80.
I don't know about tech and san antonio or SW, but I am sure it's a similar story.
and this makes sense from the admissions point of view cause they know some people will leave so they accept more people then they need.
crap, i hope i am wrong. what do ya'll think, i don't know what i am gonna do if this thing doesn't work out this year......
anyone hear similar story
