Any advice on those waitlisted. You were WL'd at TAMU last year, right? I am this year. Any words of wisdom?

Hi ilona, I matched at TCOM, too, and waitlisted at UTMB. Best of luck to us both!

Good luck! Hope to see ya at UTMB 🙂

What a well read individual. yes I was waitlisted at TAMU last year. If you look at their match, they have accepted at least 10 over their anticipated class size. This is due to the direct undergrad acceptance program they offer and a fear of not filling slots. They also have slots saved for specific applicant types (URM's). So, if a URM moves on, they move up another URM. If a WASP moves on, they move up another WASP. I love TAMU and Scott & White and feel it provides a Medical Student atmosphere second to none. Good luck.

PS. as far as residency is conscered, that is a different story.

Thanks for posting that! Did the school tell you this directly (probably not) or was this deductive reasoning? What if you aren't URM or WASP? :scared: Also, do they really wait to drop >10 people to invite people off of the waitlist? How do ranks come into play if they choose waitlisted people this way? Why bother ranking the list then, right?

AAAGGGHHH!!! I just don't get it!

Hey TJ. Long time no see man.
What is up Evo! Ya, busy with the new job, family, and life. Trying to get into shape to enter the Army as an Officer if need to be. My brother-in-law is a 2nd LT with the 2-69 Armor in the 3rd ID. He says that things in the middle east can sway either way, especially with Russia supply nuclear material to Iran and China corting the Carribean, the world is a very unstable place. I still have the desire to be an MD one day, but a new more immenient calling has landed on me. I sit at dinner with clients or at home with my family and think: This is all possible because of the sacrifices of Americans before us. There are young men living in hell in Iraq right now to (in some way no matter how you see the current conflict) secure our freedom for future generations. I feel almost guilty for enjoying my freedoms as an American.

So, I am working as a clinical specialist for a company that has and adult Intraosseous infusion system on the market, raising a family, and preparing for many other things in the mean time. I hope I never have to leave my family for military service, but if I am needed, I will respond and go early so I can enter as an officer.

So, now that everyone knows my past life story, how have you been?

Wow! They rank it now? This is new, but you are right. Why rank something if it is predetermined anyway.

Yes, I was told the list would be ranked by late February or mid-March. 😕

Email the hell our of Filo and your interviewers. Constanly bug them about your position and where you are if they rank the list. You are not a URM or a WASP? What catagorical ethnic group do you fall in then? We must label everyone!

I was thinking about e-mailing one of the interviewers that I really hit it off with but I wasn't sure if that was appropriate. Is that what you did?

Edit: BTW, I am a WASP counterpart. Hmm....did that make sense? I am so scatterbrained these days!

Hell ya! Dr. Patterson and I talked College Football for a half hour after the offical interview was over. He was so behind with all the other interviews because of my interview. He liked me, but my second interviewer was a part timer. All he focused on was my academic record. He asked if i considered carribean schools. I wanted to hit him in the mouth. His job was not tome question my academic record, that was already considered acceptable by the selection committee. He was a real downer and the reason I was not accepted out right. This was confirmed by a friend of mine that now works at the med school, and other sources at TAMU. So, email your favorite interviewer a lot! The gut was a damn DO too, lousy bastard. Our company patent attorney is also a pediatric surgeon (only 14 fellowship positions nation wide a year!) She is going to help me during my next app cycle! Woot Woot!

Good for you! It's nice when people help you out like that because they believe in you. 🙂

Maybe I will e-mail her tomorrow. Did your interviewer get back to you? What kind of feedback did he offer?

I wanna e-mail my interviewer and see if they can be an advocate for me. can i do that. there's at least one person i can think of at all the interviews where I thought it went well, so ya'll think i should e-mail 'em.

i'm also wondering if this is a good idea? 🙄

but then again... what can u say in an e-mail? do you tell them how much u really want this, etc? give meeh some tips please... ANYONE@! 😱

My MCAT was a 24, and I got 2 interviews. Granted, I'm waitlisted - but I'll take what I can get. And I suppose I'll start studying for the MCAT again. Dang it.

WASP= White anglo-saxon protestant

URM=Under-represented minority

One of my interviewers and i hit it off so well that in January I went back and shadowed her and I still e-mail back and forth to her. So i don't think they mind you e-mailing them. It can't hurt.

Wow... that almost sounds like a quota.... is that still legal??

well... i'm a URM... so I guess I'm not complaining! haha... 😛 i wonder if all schools do this??

I hate to blow people's theories away but I'm not a URM, had a 26 MCAT and I got 5 interviews (every school but UTSW and UTSA).

What I think people don't realize is that those 2 above are only just 2 parts of your app. There are ECs, PS, LORs, etc. that make a candidate attractive to a particular school. I applied early and 4 of 5 of my interviews were in August (1st or 2nd interview of the season for most schools).

My advice -
1) take the April MCAT no matter what (you can always upgrade your score in August)
2) Apply as early as humanly possible (this may require some forward planning and sacrificing study time, but it's worth it)
3) Diversify your profile (I played hockey - was the president for 1 yr, assistant Captain for 4 yrs) you can then talk about something other than medicine and you've developed other skills that Adcoms want (teamwork, leadership, etc)

Remember, the only numbers you really need are the ones that get you an interview. After that, your interview and personality is what clinches the deal.

Good luck and may the waitlists be good to you all!!

Have any other waitlisters filled out your fafsa yet? My EFC is 15,000 and that is just with my income..Does anyone have any idea how this is going to affect my loans if I do get pulled from a waitlist..I know there is a thread for this but I'd rather see if y'all know

I filed FAFSA and my EFC is 12,000. It will affect the loan amount that you are eligible for (i.e. for you and me, it will decrease). You will have to do a change in status type thing for them to be able to allocate more money if you get in. All in all, you should be OK. I know I don't have $12,000 that I can readily fork over. I think the US Department of Education is smoking some really good crack. 🙂

Yeah, I hear you man. Even though I've already served, I still think about going back from time to time. I'll tell you this: the time that you serve on active duty is time lived @ 110%. In civilian life it sometimes feel that you're only half alive. If you do decide to serve then I think you'll really like it. However, it won't do anything to get you into med school. Just an FYI.

So you're going to re-apply? I think that's great. Are you retaking the MCAT too? I re-took mine in April and that immediately got me an acceptance off a waitlist, more interviews, and an acceptance to UTHSCSA (with your favorite Dean 😉 ). Glad to see that you're still around.

Evo

So I called UT-H finally...and bad news. Since when does 30/3.9 not even get waitlisted there? Interviews were great! Something just doesn't feel right about all this.

You have great stats and that sucks! Are you waitlisted anywhere else or have you already been accepted somewhere?

Good luck to you!

I got rejected from UT-H too, with a 3.75/32. I thought I clicked pretty well with one of my interviewers, too...but apparently that wasn't enough. In general my interviews were mediocre, nothing outstanding...now I wish I'd prepared more. 🙁

Did you get letter of rejection, or you called? What's their number? May be I should call..... 😕

I matched with UTMB, but I really don't think that is where I want to be (hence, why it was fourth out of four on my list). I am hoping I get accepted to University of Southern California...and give up my spot in Galveston for somebody who wants it much more than I do.

I called 713-500-5116. They said a letter should be received in a couple weeks. Can't wait!

Yes, I got the letter saying I am on their wait list, but what confused me was that they said that if applicant accepts the offer in any other school, they are automaticly taken off the waitlist. I accepted TCOM just in case, but it sux if that automaticly took me of UTMB waitlist.

hey, you are still on the waitlist at the schools you ranked above yours even if you accepted the offer. so you can still get off the waitlist befroe may 1 or may 15 (can't remember), assuming of couse you are on the waitlist.

and to everyone who posted their stuff about UTH, I have one word to say: DANG.

and D_love, can i ask you why you don't like galveston. if you are worried about the city you shouldn't be. I think the school's cool.

oh yeah me too, I wish i had prepare more for interviews and had just tried harder to let them know that hey you gotta pick me. cause looking back i know i could have done much better.

also, anyone had a girl med student for interview at A&M, she was really tough on me. That was my worst interveiw ever, and i remember people telling me if you get a med student for interveiw you are in for it. She was horrible asking me stuff that i had never even thought off.

oh well live and learn.

It's not that I dislike UTMB or the city that much...It's just that I've worked so hard for four years and wanted to go somewhere better. I don't mean somewhere in the top ten or anything. Just somewhere with better resources like UT-H or USC, for instance.

Also, my experience with UTMB students (night before interview) and on these threads make them sound like a joke. People get excited like UTMB is Galveston social hour. The fraternity idea sounds ridiculous to me. I'm in a fraternity now at Texas Tech, but I plan to put these days behind me and grow up. I'm going to med school to become a physician...not to go to some joke toga party.

med school is what you make of it - you can easily hole yourself up in the library and study 24/7 to get great grades if you want. you can also drink yourself into oblivion and cram before exams to pull straight Cs. or you can find a happy balance between working hard and playing hard. don't think that the school itself dictates your fate as a physician - you do.

last i checked all those students who graduated from UTMB got the same degree as every other med student in texas.

if you're that jaded about the school you may as well give up your spot now to someone who will appreciate the opportunity to become a doctor and take your chances with institutions where you feel you'll be happy.

The worst part about my UT-Houston experience...

I interviewed with the Assistant Dean of Admissions. The interview was by far my best, and it went for about 2 hours until she said she had to leave to go home. I e-mailed her after the match to see if I went wrong somewhere, in the interview or otherwise. My questions in the e-mail were all directed to her because I thought someone so nice would help me out a little. I even asked if there was anything I could do to improve before my USC interview. She replied promptly: "Congrats on UTMB! I have forwarded your e-mail to Dr. Gunn."

That was just insulting. It shows that she took the time to read the e-mail and see where I matched, but refused to address my simple requests.

I'll take what I get and roll with it. I'm not saying that graduating from UTMB will give me any less of a degree. But do you think that UTMB or even UTHSCSA provide the same amount of resources and exposure as do other schools? I do not.

In any sense, I'm just bitter about the whole process. If I end up at UTMB, I'll prove myself for four more years. I don't dislike the school or the city...just this crazy admissions stuff.

dlove - how did you like tech as an undergrad? did you get waitlisted at tech SOM? i was just wondering what you felt about the school in general, seeing as i went to UVA for undergrad and will be spending four years at tech. 🙂

Tech is really what you make of it. I moved from Dallas to Lubbock and wasn't all that happy with the location at first. I guess I just missed the bigger city. I realized soon that Lubbock has great people and a surprisingly good atmosphere for students. I have loved my four years here, and would do it all over again.

As for the SOM...I haven't got anything, so I assume that I was not waitlisted. I decided that I would stay at UTMB anyways. Lubbock is okay...but four more years might be pushing it.

You won't get anything from Tech..You need to log on to the Match List thing under Admissions on their web page..You fill in Last name, First name SS# and password from your secondary and it tells you if you are not the alternate list or not

i can't speak for utmb, but uthscsa has every resource i would want from a school - accessible faculty and administration, diverse clinical and research opportunities, and (most importantly) great people. it sounds like you're getting too caught up in the schools' reputations when in reality they all provide a quality education, match very well into competitive specialties, and prepare you for a career in medicine.
again, med school is what you make of it.

OKAY I GOT SOME REALLY BAD NEWS:

I hear that UTH has accpeted ~230-240 people for class of 200, so that means 30-40 people have got to tell them no before any waitlist movement occurs.
and UTMB said they have 230 for class of 200 as well.
and TAMU said 91 for class of 80.
I don't know about tech and san antonio or SW, but I am sure it's a similar story.
and this makes sense from the admissions point of view cause they know some people will leave so they accept more people then they need.

crap, i hope i am wrong. what do ya'll think, i don't know what i am gonna do if this thing doesn't work out this year......
anyone hear similar story

They do this every year. They did it last year too.

last year, some schools, like houston and san antonio took 15-20 ppl from the alternate pool... so I guess that was on top of the 30-40 ppl that moved up or said no.

the same scenario will happen this year... i hope. but in other words... we still have the same chances again..

SA - 15-20 out of 65
UTH - 15-20 out of 200
TAMU - 10 out of 200

keep HOPE alive!
i know I am... but hopefully i'm not setting myself up for another Failure.. 🙁
