Thanks for the encouraging words. I don't see how UT-Houston thinks it knows as of RIGHT NOW that they will not take anyone off the waitlist (which is not to say your phone call didn't happen utgirl812). I just think it is reasonable to assume 31 kids will move. In fact, I don't think anybody knows anything new until more private schools start snatching kids with TMDSAS spots off the TMDSAS school roster. And from what I've heard, a lot of east coast schools start sending out stuff march 15. until then we can still fret and worry (which is perfectly cool since i'm doin it right now) but I don't think anybody knows anything new. good luck everybody. late.
 Sometimes I think that clerks in some of the admissions offices at these schools make stuff up just to get you off of the phone. 🙁

I have encountered the rudest telephone clerks at UTH. I am not trashing the school but their admissions office staff (incl the Dean of it all ) sucks!! 👎

Thank you all for writing after my UT-H call this morning. I don't know why or how the admissions clerk would know that they are not expecting to take anyone off the alternate list this year. To me, it just seems too early to say something like that. It's good to hear that people already in UT-H are awaiting other offers...I hope everyone gets exactly what they want. We have all worked TOO HARD to get to this point! I am thinking that patience is the most important thing now.

TB- you are probably right about the admissions clerks just saying something to get people off the phone.

Alright, am I being overly sensitive to be offended by the e-mail sent out from TCOM regarding their intensive post-bac program? For some reason, I just thought it was in bad taste. I guess I took it as "You weren't good enough to get into our program, but if you come and spend a year with us, you just might have a chance!"

I took it as, "Oh crap! Now more people know about it. More competition for those 25 seats...grrr.."

I had the same feeling about TAMU enclosing a letter about their public health program. It is a little insensitive and offers no guaranteed alternatives.

Ah, another glorious day on the Texas waitlist thread. Anyone heard from UTSW yet?

What's up TB? 🙂 Hope your day's going good. I'd love to have a glass of wine or four with you sometime 😉

Also, can someone re-bold the school names on the list? I'd do it but I'm too stupid to figure out how

BTW, Blue Orchid, if you want to honor your parents and your heart isn't in TCOM, there are many here that like osteo that would willingly jump in your empty class seat. 😀

Good luck in whatever you do.

Haha, thanks. 🙂

Someone suggested to me that I should go ahead and attend TCOM in the fall, but reapply for MD schools in the meantime if I really didn't want to go there. 😕 😕 Is this even legal? I've never heard of anyone doing such a thing before, and it sounds wrong somehow.

I am so proud of this year's class of waitlisters. I started this thread not knowing the response it would get and now we are approaching 500 posts! Many props to True Blue for keeping us on page 1 and being the impromptu leader of our gang of rejected souls. 😀

My $100 lands on the side of no chance in hell, at least in Texas. I think you would be looked down upon for taking a seat and then abandoning it. That is just the wrong thing to do. You would be keeping one less doc to be from reaching his or her goal. 👎

You realize of course that second year seats cannont be filled? 3rd year seats can only be filled by transfer and that creates a opening somewhere else. It's a vicious dominoe effect. Put some serious thought into your decision.

I called the UT-H admissions office today and they said they have 230 students for next year. They told me they do not expect to take anyone from the waitlist this year because so many people accepted their offer. That's very disappointing to me as I am on their alternate list and was hoping to at least have a chance at getting in. 🙁

Just got home from work and got thru watching the Apprentice...

after reading this post... I almost burst into tears 🙁

friends and family are being so supportative... saying things like... if you're on a waitlist you have a REAL good chance of getting in...

then I talked to the doctor I work for, and he "bitch-slapped" me back into reality... saying its still a pretty slim chance and I have to start planning for the next application period :scared: needless to say i was crushed...

anyhow... after all the following comments... i realized that I'm not going to give up hope! This thread shoulda been called... KEEP HOPE ALIVE!

good luck everyone on this wonderful thread! This boat ain't sinkin' anytime soon! or EVER! 🙄

I'm not making decisions just yet. Believe me...attending med school for one year, then withdrawing, is the last thing I would want to do when I know there are people on the waitlist who would benefit from my seat. The person who suggested that to me is a business major, and we all know how people in business firms switch back and forth between companies all the time. I tried to explain that med schools invest in students as much as students invest in the school, but s/he said, "well, when you withdraw, there's nothing they can do about it anyway. Stop thinking about schools and think about yourself." *sigh* typical jerk.

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me it's illegal to "two-time" med schools so that I can shut the person in question up once and for all and not have to consider such a thing again. :meanie: But I can't exactly call the Texas med schools to get info; what would they think of me??

500 posts in less than a month...I think we are all pretty cool! You guys are awesome!

OK the doctor that bitch slapped you into reality is an IDIOT..My sister is a nurse at a hospital here in Austin..She is usually really competitive with me and tries to constantly out-do me..When I didn't get in, I talked to her next morning and asked if she'd heard ( from mommy dearest ) about the tragedy..She said " hey, ******* it's not a tragedy..the chief of the Emergency dept. here applied 5 times to get in..Don't worry..It will happen"
There are nay say-ers out there, if this is what you want it's going to happen..I think it is awesome that you are keeping the faith 👍

Um, not to be a party pooper but I've some experience with TX waitlists. And that doctor was right. They grind ever slowly and very few people actually get off of them. Especially Houston's.

As an old sergeant once told me: "Evo, hope for the best but plan for the worst." Hope is necessary but a dose of reality certainly doesn't hurt.

Peace

Yes, as much as I would love to keep my hopes alive, the past years' numbers indicate that Evo (and the doc) are probably right. It totally sucks but it is a sad reality.

Nonetheless, it is better than being totally rejected, although I wonder sometimes why schools keep such large waitlists when they only takes so few of them. It's actually a pretty cruel thing to do.

The med school application asks you if you are attending or have attended a med school in the past. I doubt it is illegal, but it is unlikely to work. It is possible to transfer to another medical school, but you must have a good reason. If you don't want to go there or worry that you won't get into specialty of choice, then reapply. You will be giving up a good spot IMO.

That's the big question...do I want to give up my spot and risk getting zero interviews or zero acceptances next year? Still considering all my options, but believe me it's no picnic. It sucks a bit to be me right now. I should be celebrating for getting accepted into any school at all, but for reasons already mentioned I can't...

True Blue.
As you know I am in the same situation. I would like to go to UTMB, BUT I got in to TCOM... Do you know what speciality you want to do? I know people say it is harder to get whatever speciality you want, but if you do good, I've heard people do pretty much whatever they want. I was thinking about it lately, and the only reason I don't want to do DO school is because I want to have MD after my name... which is totaly dumb. DOs do the same thing (plus more) than MDs, so in reality it comes down to two letters. I am sorry your parents are not supportive. Ask them why they don't want you to do MD.

ilona's referring to me, true blue. We're both blue 🙂

My parents don't want me to go to TCOM b/c they have MD friends who told them that in their med school days, the worst MD had a better chance of getting a good residency than the best DO. I know that is crap, but the parents believe what the MDs say. They just want what's best for me and think that being a DO would put me at an unnecessary disadvantage. I've tried educating them about MDs and DOs, but so far it hasn't worked. 🙄

I got confused. sorry
How old are you b t w? The reason I don't want to reapply is because I am almost 29 and I don't want to risk it. I planned it out to have a kid when I am 36, so it means I have to start this year. May be you should try next year again... but it is risky...

I'm a 22-year-old senior about to graduate in May 🙂

Yeah, the risk of reapplying and not getting accepted is pretty scary. Not sure if I'm willing to take that risk yet.

Hey Blue Orchid,

we talked earlier, i am thinking about reapplying and i know tx doesn't seem to like to give reapplicants interviews as posted by people earlier, you can apply out of state. and if i don't get in next year, caribbean hear i come, i know at least 3 people who went there and are doing A-ok.
and i was looking on md applicants and some dude with same GPAand mcat's as me is sitting with 3 acceptences. and you know that my numbers are lower than yours. so as i said earlier in the thread, i know what mistake i made, i should have applied to some low tier out of state schools.
i am thinking aobt going to caribbian this year but haven'tmade up my mind.
is caribbean an optioin for you.

i am still hoping that the witlist gods shine eventhough i realize that the chances are low.
any opinions.

and as for my opinon of DO's, well obviously i talked to alot of MD and MD/PhD. maybe a bit biased. and like i said if you wanna do primary care and/or private practice it won't matter at all and i don't wnat to do either

also, you guys can search post by DO_surgeon on SDN, the person is a 4th year applying for general surgery, i was goofing around and found it, see if you can find what he posted around 2/14, it's pretty long but very informative, i'll try to find it and post the link here and you gus can give me opinion, so give me 2 minutes...

I probably wouldn't take the Caribbean route b/c it's supposedly harder for Caribbean graduates than DOs to find a good residency in the US. Not applying to many schools outside of TMDSAS was probably a mistake, but I thought I had a better shot at acceptance in Texas. Ah well.

Whew...I need to stop posting so much. Ok, time to study and sleep 🙂

Just as there's an equalizer for undergrad programs (MCAT) there's an equalizer for medical schools/degrees to some level (USMLE). If you kick ass on them and really show you can do the job in your preceptorship/externships I don't see why there would be anyone keeping you out of the residency you want. DO, MD, Carribbean... in the end, it's all about who can do the job as well as earn the trust of patietns. Frankly I don't nkow any patients that request to see their doctor's degree nor care so long as he takes care of business and is friendly.

The OB working in my office did his schooling in Germany and Canada while the Family Practitioner we have did his schooling in S. France.

O but if you're gonna do the island thing I'd look at SGU and steer clear of Ross. I may be mistaken but SGU has a 91% pass rate for USMLE step 1 as compared to the 93% average of the US schools. Ross however had something in the 60 something % of pass rate. Now whether that is due to the education they get there or the quality of students they take is something I can't say. Still, all things to keep in mind when you look at the big picture.

... i can't wait until one of us on this thread actually gets IN! 😀

I'm going to be so excited... even if its not me... at least it will shed light on the slim chance of ppl actually getting in! what's the damn point of a waitlist if they won't let anyone in... something's gotta give!

for UTSW waitlisters someone on the other thread posted that SW accepted 329 people for class of 220, that sounds crazy. It makes houston number look sane. so does that mean UTSW's list is not goona move. does anyone know their story from last year.

anyone called UTMB, I don't know how many people told them NO. Last time i talked they said they accepted 230 for 200, so i wanna know how many of the 30 said NO.

It' a brisk morning deep in the heart of Texas today. After a long day of substitute teaching, I plan to go on a date with my wife to kick off the weekend. Two days of freedom is my reward for teaching at inner city schools all week long!

What are everyone else's plans for this weekend?

Good morning everyone! TGIF! It has been a long week!

Weekend plans: Two parties, volunteering, and the usual maintenance stuff like laundry, clean house, etc. In between, probably chew on my nails wondering about this WL thing. Oh yeah, and I have a couple of reports to do for work. Yipee!

The good thing about this weekend: March is next week. Maybe a list will move. 🙂

Happy Go Texan Day my fellow Houston peeps!!!! Yee-haw! 😀

yea... I'm an eternal Optimist (maybe that's why I always get burned) haha.. 😛

anyhow... I called Belinda today at UT San Antonio... and she said, although there hasn't been any movement of the WL yet because its still very early... 10 ppl have already declined to be on the waitlist there...

so that means only 65-10 = 55 ppl left in the alternate pool!

:luck:
