The Motivation Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, would it motivate you if we said that we want to see what you have right now, and then get an update tomorrow night? I remember reading that people are more likely to actually do stuff -- meet a deadline they set for themselves, keep a resolution -- if they tell someone else they are going to do it. It definitely helps me! So, whatcha got?

I'll start. I have a proposal paper due in 3 weeks, and I only have *some* preliminary research done.
Go.
😉

Alright, so this is what's going to happen if you don't get your buttocks moving:

Instead of finishing up preliminary research, you decide to fool around, answer posts on SDN, stare off into space, eat an entire box of Girl Scout cookies, stalk mildly attractive people's photos on Facebok, and watch random episodes of Arrested Development while you cry a little inside because it was an amazing show that they canceled for some stupid reason. Every time you sit down to do your paper, you get sidetracked, until it's the morning of the 29th of April and your paper is due the first of May, and you have work all day on the 30th. So you bolt down to getting all your research done because you think you're on the right track, I mean, you've got a topic and a general idea and you think that's more than what other people have so far anyway. Then you're searching through PubMed or whatever and find out, OH CRAP! Someone has already published the EXACT SAME STUDY that you want to propose! So you frantically search for more articles on a totally different subject, meaning you have to read through dozens more abstracts until you finally find some obscure topic with almost no background information that you have to base your proposal on. So you go to the library and beg them to get you so and so article that can only be found at one university, and they tell you it won't arrive for weeks. Haha. You're screwed.

That's why you should get your buns on task NOW. 😎

Oh, and I guess what I'm supposed to do is write a seven page paper (totally unrelated to science) using books I can only check out from the library for two hours at a time, and stay in the library while using them. It's due in about a week. I don't even have my thesis written.

Wanna hear something lame? I'm graduated, and have one very important task: order a bridesmaids dress. I'm putting it off because I have to get my measurements AND cough up the money. It's getting close to desperate because I'll still need to have it tailored when I get it too. I just am having a very hard time justifying the money when I'm about to spend more money than I have on tuition

Well, I just had to order one on credit 🙄.. #1 reason that you should buy it now... you are a good friend and your bride, although she may not say it, is probably freaking out that you haven't bought it yet even though the wedding is a year away. It's one less thing for her to have to worry about and you want to do all that you can to help her with the craziness that is her wedding. And... if you know anyone that can sew mom, grandma, friend? they might be able to tailor it for you. If it's just the bottom hem then that is really easy. I am fixing my own since I am 5'2" and it seems like these dresses are made for 5'10" supermodels.. And don't think about the money.. your friendship is worth it and this means the WORLD to the bride that you will be in her wedding. And chances are she will be in yours too then she will do the same for you 👍

Now, who wants to motivate me to write a pointless essay for composition class?

What is the essay about? I am AWESOME (well in my opinion) at coming up with topics for papers for my BA(general) roommate 🙂

I'm going to have to revive this thread...I'm working on my MS thesis (as I know many other are). It's something that has to be finished sooner rather than later...isn't it amazing how you find other stuff to do (ie, 3 loads of laundry and cleaning) to avoid writing? I've been pretty good at being motivated thus far, but now I'm trying to remember a day when I didn't work on my thesis for hours....other stories like this are welcome so I don't feel like such a slacker😀

Yep, my summer is also being consumed by thesis writing!

Even though the lab is ~45 minutes from where I live, I'm going in every day and just treating it like a job. If I tried to write from home I would find too many distractions. It'll get done!
