Great idea putting all these questions into one topic!

I'm a non-trad, about to starting taking my pre-reqs this summer. Since I have never taken these science courses before, some advice about time committment and level of difficulty would be greatly appreciated. Things to keep in mind:

- I will be working fulltime through summer 2011, after which my hours will drop to ~20-30/wk.
- Vounteer 2 nights a week (6pm-6am) for EMS. The amount of time I get to study depends on how many people decide to call 911 that night.
- Enrolled in paramedic program until end of 2011 (practically a full time job in itself)
- Will also be doing extra activities to bolster EC's (shadowing, non-medical volunteering etc.)

Summer O-Chem has me worried, but after searching through similar threads it appears that many people have been able to survive. Flexibility has me worried too - if I don't get enrolled in these classes as scheduled (full class or something) it could derail everything.

You have your classes planned out until 2013? I mean I have a general idea of what I'd be taking, but there are a lot of things that can change by then!

If I may ask, why are you doing a paramedic program? I don't know where you are located but here, it is 2 years and about 60 credits to become a paramedic after you've become an emt already. Are you doing the paramedic program because you want to be a paramedic or just because you want to be competitive for medical school? If it's the latter, I think you're wasting time and money IMO.

And as for the extra class, try microbiology or genetics?

Summer doesn't sound bad. These sound like they may potentially be easy general requirements?

Why are you taking A&P? Have you taken biology 1&2 already? And as for the fall, I would highly not recommend taking Organic Chemistry until you finish General Chemistry. In addition, you're trying to take 4 science classes at once with their labs. I took three science classes at once with their labs while working and doing other extracurricular things. I managed to pull it off but it wasn't easy so I can't imagine four. I would hold off on Organic Chemistry another semester.

Hey dude, current UW student, glad to see another Wyomingnite around.

On a different note, I agree with the previous two posters that this is not an advisable fall schedule. Read a previous post from you saying you were at a cc (LCCC maybe? I went there!) planning on coming to UW sometime. I'm not sure what you're planning on majoring in once you come to UW, but you don't need A&P unless you're a nursing or pre-pharmacy major. If you're just doing it for the MCAT...meh. I guess. Taking gen bio would help you more if you haven't done that as it's a prerequisite for many upper division courses you're going to need. Also, taking a gen chem with ochem is also not advisable. Think twice before you do that. Too many labs while working (assuming you're going to be working as a CNA after the summer) is going to be hard also.

I would suggest gen bio w/ lab (4), gen chem 2 w/ lab (4), logic (3), and maybe stats 2070 (4) if you haven't taken it- you'll need it for graduation if you're going to be any kind of science major at UW. That'll sit you at a nice 15 hrs with only 2 labs. Plenty of time to work and do other crap.

Cheers.

Summer:

Orgo II on MW from 8:00-2:50 (lecture and lab)
MCAT studying (taking it in August)

Oh.. it's only a month? Then you're looking at 40 hours a week with Physics and gen chem 2. At my school the chemistry lab is alone.. 9 hours a week of work.. the lecture is around 6. The physics class with lab is maybe around 12 hours a week of pure in class work. Since you're classes are actually shorter than mine ( My summer session is July to mid August) you'll probably be seeing up wards of 20 hours of in class work for just chemistry.
It's frankly suicide..

hell yuhh

Thanks, Torshi. Haven't done much studying yet. I'm cramming several science classes and my honors thesis into this semester, so I'm focusing on getting my sGPA up.

You have your classes planned out until 2013? I mean I have a general idea of what I'd be taking, but there are a lot of things that can change by then!

I pretty much built my schedule backwards based on what I need to be ready for the MCAT in 2 years. Biochem needs O-Chem, which needs Gen-chem; Physics needs Calc; Physiology needs Bio I. Plus, it makes me feel better to have some sort of overall plan, even if things do turn completely upside down by the time I'm finished.

I have been a volunteer firefighter / EMT for a few years, and until recently this was my career path. I'm not going to drop out now because:

1 - I really enjoy it
2 - Only two semesters left
3 - I will owe the county big $$$ if I don't complete the program 😀

And as for the extra class, try microbiology or genetics?

Congrats! But it seems to me you won't need an extra class in spring 2013. Biochem and Physics will keep your hands full for a while...

I should have explained that I'd like to take a somewhat low-intensity course that semester; I agree that between Biochem + Physics + MCAT prep I will be busy. I'm hesitant to not take a third class because:

1 - GPA needs boosting, so every extra class I can take and get an A in helps
2 - Don't want adcoms to think I'm a slacker and can only handle two advanced classes at a time (is this even an issue?)

I appreciate the input - thanks to the both of you!

Your Fall is crazy haha.
That's 4 labs and 4 totally diff science courses. I personally think you would get confused mainly because with anatomy and physiology is just rote memorization.
Also, orgo takes a lot of studying to just even pass the course.
Hopefully you don't plan on doing any EC's at all and study hardcore but I honestly wouldn't do that much.

My fall semester looks like:
-orgo chem
-org lab
-bio 2
-bio2 lab
-behavioral neuroscience
-cellular neuroscience
-stats

Thanks for all of the replies!

Go Wyoming! And yeah at LCCC. Well not really, but its not awful 😛 See the thing is, I'm a semester behind on sciences, and I need to catch up with ochem. If I don't take it this semester, LCCC doesn't offer it in spring, setting me a whole year back. That's why the gen chem/ochem are my important courses. A&P was just going to be getting some background in that so I'm more ready during med school. Honestly if I drop anything, it would be A&P and the Logic class.

And I have taken General Bio. I can't take a higher level bio because it counteracts with organic chemistry.

And yeah summer is a mix of gen reqs and just classes I'd like to take/stuff to look good on a resume.

Here is what my fall is going to look like:

Seriously though, I'd only be worried about biochem if you have a really tough professor. You don't have to take a biochem lab?

Your summer courses look fine. You should be able to do your undergrad research just fine. Your fall semester might get a bit crammed in with the research... as I'm assuming your doing an independent study?

The Summer research is basically 25-40 hours a week, which is the biggest worry.

I'm actually going to be in two labs in the Fall, the first is independent study while the second is just a lab monkey job for a grade and LOR. I predict that I'll drop Virology or Imm/Ser to help with time though.

Summer 2011:

Nope, the biochem for majors does not have a required associated lab. I don't think any medical schools even require a lab anyway. Although if they do for some reason I took survey biochem (which had a lab) as well.

I was previously taking Organic Chemistry II, Organic Chemistry Lab, Mammalian Physiology, Ecology & Evolution of Disease, and Cell Biology which was 15 credits. I decided to pick up Biophysics I and swap Cell Biology for Evolution of Humans, hoping that the latter will be easier. I'll take Cell Biology another time.

Evolution of Humans sounds like a bad ass class btw.

Lol I can't swim either. If your worried about calc two don't be. Honestly if you put in a decent effort it's not that bad. I can vouche as a liberal arts student who is taking an accelerated Calc2/Analytical geometry class for engineers.

Guys guys guys... schedule is soooooooooo not important at all. If you get A's in your classes, do well on your MCATs and have some extracurriculars, you're pretty much golden - and you WILL do well in medical school! If you don't get into a med school you wanted to get into, I ASSURE you it won't have been because your class schedule wasn't challenging enough. It hurts me to see people murdering themselves with courseloads... Wait until medical school to be murdered.

I can't speak for everyone but I think I am taking a heavy course load in the fall but .. I'm not doing it to be "challenging". I guess it's a variety of reasons. I'm taking my MCAT next spring so I want to take less classes then, would rather take more classes now/in the fall before I really start MCAT studying. Plus there are a lot of other more awesome, interesting classes I want to take which are only offered in the fall or spring so I have to finish up the prerequisites for them first :\.

Oh and I am trying to stuff some classes in before MCAT. I'm a biology major so I have to take classes like mammalian physiology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, etc eventually anyway. I feel like if I can fit these in before MCAT, they might help out.

summer:
weightlifting- 1 unit
EMT-B class
finish my spanish rosetta stone 🙂

fall:
(hopefully) 1-year extended police academy 27.75+12 units
spanish 1- 5 units
intro chem- 4 units

spring:
(still doing academy)
span 2- 5 units
intermediate algebra- 4 units (non-transfer)

8hrs/week hospital volunteer starting next week

basically a waste of a year as none of this stuff really applies to my major.

English (3 units)

Should I take one more class?

So I'm an incoming freshman and I'm doing Pre-Med/Pre-PT, Biology Major. My schedule for freshman is really solid, but I'm actually questioning my proposed sophomore year schedule.

Fall:
Biology Concepts III Lecture (3 Credits)
Biology Concepts III Lab (1 Credit)
Organic Chemistry I Lecture (3 Credits)
Organic Chemistry I Lab (1 Credit)
Algebra-Based College Physics I Lecture(3 Credits)
Algebra-Based College Physics I Lab (2 Credits)
Nature Writing (3 Credits)
= 16 Credits

Spring:
Principles of Genetical Analysis (3 Credits)
Principles of Genetical Analysis (1 Credit)
Organic Chemistry II Lecture (3 Credits)
Organic Chemistry II Lab (1 Credit)
Algebra-Based College Physics II Lecture(3 Credits)
Algebra-Based College Physics II Lab (2 Credits)
Biology Research Methods (3 Credits)
= 16 Credits

The reason why I'm grouping these hard sciences together is because I need to take the MCAT during the summer as a rising Junior. Otherwise, I can't take submit my medical school apps in time. I know I am planning too early, but I think it's beneficial if I do, especially with the case of Medical School
