The Official "How Does This Schedule Look" Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I'm an incoming freshman and I'm doing Pre-Med/Pre-PT, Biology Major. My schedule for freshman is really solid, but I'm actually questioning my proposed sophomore year schedule.

Fall:
Biology Concepts III Lecture (3 Credits)
Biology Concepts III Lab (1 Credit)
Organic Chemistry I Lecture (3 Credits)
Organic Chemistry I Lab (1 Credit)
Algebra-Based College Physics I Lecture(3 Credits)
Algebra-Based College Physics I Lab (2 Credits)
Nature Writing (3 Credits)
= 16 Credits

Spring:
Principles of Genetical Analysis (3 Credits)
Principles of Genetical Analysis (1 Credit)
Organic Chemistry II Lecture (3 Credits)
Organic Chemistry II Lab (1 Credit)
Algebra-Based College Physics II Lecture(3 Credits)
Algebra-Based College Physics II Lab (2 Credits)
Biology Research Methods (3 Credits)
= 16 Credits

The reason why I'm grouping these hard sciences together is because I need to take the MCAT during the summer as a rising Junior. Otherwise, I can't take submit my medical school apps in time. I know I am planning too early, but I think it's beneficial if I do, especially with the case of Medical School

Why not take Physics your junior year and take the MCAT in May/June before you apply. Don't kill yourself. You are stuck with those grades forever.

summer:
weightlifting- 1 unit
EMT-B class
finish my spanish rosetta stone 🙂

fall:
(hopefully) 1-year extended police academy 27.75+12 units
spanish 1- 5 units
intro chem- 4 units

spring:
(still doing academy)
span 2- 5 units
intermediate algebra- 4 units (non-transfer)

8hrs/week hospital volunteer starting next week

basically a waste of a year as none of this stuff really applies to my major.

Police academy? 😍

Why don't you hold off on MCAT until the spring of your junior year? You can take it in April and retake in May or June if you need to.

Proposed schedules end up changing anyway. When I was freshman, I planned out my whole 4 years of college. Needless to say, I have made A LOT of changes. Colleges change when they offer certain classes quite frequently. Sometimes they come up with new classes altogether. Sometimes you take an introductory course to a certain topic you thought you'd want to continue with and discover, "WTF I hate this ****".

I came into college a biology major/criminal justice minor. I had no interest in chemistry and I didn't want to take any classes on evolution because I thought evolution was dumb. I hated physics and all I wanted to take was the two required semesters of it. 2 years later, I'm a biology major/chemistry minor/psychology minor. I've taken every evolution course offered at my university. I'm taking an additional two semesters of biophysics. Things change, you change.

That's probably going to be rough. 3 science courses a semester with lab really is going to be a huge time commitment. I would take the physics series over the summer session or leave that for junior year. Furthermore unless you're graduating in 3 years, you'll have your entire junior year for studying/taking the Mcat ( Application season starts June 1st).
Anyways, it's better to take your time than rush, crash and burn out. Because frankly you have no idea how painful it is to have 3 labs, even if you pull out with good grades you'll be a husk of your previous living self.

For next year:

Q1: Genetics (4 units), OChem + Lab (6 units) + Research (4 units)
Q2: Bio Chem (4 units) + above
Q3: Molecular Bio (4 units) + above

Is this a little too light? (12 units is full time, and research units are kind of a joke)

I think I know where you go to school 😉 Don't underestimate the Bio core and Ochem but don't you have GE's to finish anyways?

Haha, yeah zot zot.
Anyway, I went through with HumCore this year and came with a decent amount of ap creds, so GEs are fine.

What are your thoughts, if any, on doing the Sussex program and/or taking certain courses over summer?

I took summer classes for my first 2 years and enjoyed it. I preferred doing math in 5 weeks since 10 weeks was too drawn out for me in a class that had daily homework. I also took genetics in the summer which actually turned out really well because I ended up tutoring genetics for LARC that fall.

I have heard great things about Sussex. A lot of people really enjoyed it and I haven't heard of anyone who didn't get As. The only problem most people expressed is that they really didn't learn any physics and this has hurt them for the MCAT.

Lol I can't swim either. If your worried about calc two don't be. Honestly if you put in a decent effort it's not that bad. I can vouche as a liberal arts student who is taking an accelerated Calc2/Analytical geometry class for engineers.

Ha, great to see that I wouldn't be the only one sinking in the pool. As for Calc II i'm afraid because my Calc I professor was terrible! (showed up 30 mins late to a 50 mins class..nothing we could do about it since she was retiring the next semester :l) and I usually suck at math if I don't get a decent professor.

Your MDApp is pretty amazing my man #envy
Yeah, ive heard the same thing about sussex, did you think physics was over the top at irvine? or doable?
And thanks a lot for the advice, definitely will consider all of it <3

I think physics here is highly dependent on your professor. I took 2/3 of the series in the summer and it was pretty easy. 3C also wasn't bad but my professor was not as awesome as in the summer.

I'll be a sophomore
Fall:

Orgo I- 3 hours
Orgo I Lab- 2 hours
Intro To Public Health- 3 hours
Intro To Social Psych- 3 hours
Bio I (molecular & cellular biology)- 4 hours
Bio I Lab-1 hour
Total= 16 hours

Not sure what to expect...

This sounds very similar to the semester I'm finishing up now. Orgo sucked but I found that taking organic chemistry while taking molecular/cellular biology helped reinforce some of the concepts. Well my molecular/cell biology course discussed the structure, bonding, and other properties of various molecules quite in depth. If I wasn't taking that biology course, I'd probably head desk repeatedly and ask myself why I need to know organic chemistry.

Tentative:
- Process Thermodynamics
- Fluid and Solid Operations
- Energy Transfer Operations
- Analytical Chemistry
...should be fun!

Fall 2011: Junior year

Genetics + lab (4cr)
Physiology + lab (4cr)
Biochemistry + lab (4cr)
Spanish II (3cr)
Theology - death and dying in modern christian thought (3cr)

With this, there's MCAT prep and working 20+ hours a week. The spanish and theology are required to graduate (in addition to 9 other gen. ed classes that I have to take).

Any advice?

I would drop genetics. That is way to heavy a load to take while studying for the MCAT. Physiology will at least be beneficial for the MCAT, as for genetics there will be little on it that requires a actual genetics class.

Hold off on genetics if you can.

Yeah, you?

I was actually going to ask if you went to my school because of your location, and the names of the Nsc classes, but we don't have Farsi classes, so I'm guessing not.

I don't think I could handle that schedule! Good luck :]

I feel like I've been piling up the credits a little too high each quarter. Next year I'll have to take it easy and boost my GPA. Here's this year's schedule, with plans for next year at the end.

Fall 2010: 15 credits (the "recommended" amount at my university)
5: CMPS 101: Abstract Data Types (A-)
5: HEBR 1: Instructional Hebrew Language (A)
5: CHEM 1A: General Chemistry (A)

Winter 2011: 27 credits (!)
5: BIOE 20c: Ecology & Evolution (C+ ouch)
5: CHEM 1C: General Chemistry (A)
2: CHEM 1N: Gen Chem Lab (A)
5: CMPS 130: Computational Modeling (A-)
5: CMPS 180: Database Systems (B+)
5: HEBR 2: Instructional Hebrew Language (P for pass w00t)

Spring 2011 (right now): 23 credits
5: CHEM 1B: General Chemistry (last one tyvm. midterm today)
2: CHEM 1M: Gen Chem Lab
5: CMPE 110: Computer Architecture
5: PHYS 6A: Physics I
1: PHYS 6L: physics lab
5: CMPS 198: Independent Study (this is KICKING MY ASS I hope I don't fail)

Summer 2011: Gonna take a technical writing class, an EMT class, maybe intro to psych, maybe one more general/easyish class.

Next year: Organic Chemistry, starting up biology forrealz, finishing up physics. And doing some of the regular CMPS curriculum on the side, hopefully.

AND I've got a midterm in 100 minutes, so I'm really irresponsible. Started pre-med late (i'm in my second year) so I feel like I have to catch up

OK. here I go

Summer 1
DMAT099 (developmental math to brush up on skills)
English 1

Summer 2
Algebra 2
English 2

I am also hoping to start any meaning ful ECs during this time as well.

Fall 2011
Biol 1, lab
Gen Chem 1, lab
Algebra 2
CNA cert. (or Hist 1)
CNA cert. (or Art elective or ecology)

Spring 2011
Biol 2, lab
Gen Chem 2, lab

Not bad, not bad at all. Busy but manageable.

What sport do you play?

Lol, I was referring to the birds, mate. I know number of hot tennis playing lasses.

EDIT: Sarcasm detected haha.
Women's tennis is way too boring for me to get into. There's nothing like watching two women push a ball over a net 400 times before one of them finally screws up.

As long as they are hot, who cares?

Because I'm fairly green as far as Premeds go, I was wondering if anyone had any opinions/ comments on this schedule:

Spring 2012

Biology 2 and Lab- 4 hrs
Chemistry 2 and Lab- 4hrs
Psychobiology- 4hrs

Summer 2012

Organic Chemistry 1 and Lab- 4hrs

Fall 2012
Organic Chemistry 2 and Lab- 4hrs
Calculus 2- 4hrs
Chemistry major seminar- 1hr
Quantitative Analysis- 3hrs

In addition, I've set up this schedule so I have fulfilled the prerequisites for a joint B.S./M.D. program ( UF Joint Medical Honors). Has anyone ever heard of this program? I'm aware that it is unrelentingly competitive but I feel that if I continue my current academic streak I have a fair shot: (G.P.A. of 4.0 (may drop slightly), volunteer in Trauma Center 5 hours a week, member of my College's Honors Program and I should also be able to acquire some strong reference letters.

My only fear is that I might be passed over because I attend an HBCU which is quite prestigious in terms of HBCU's (but not in terms of national rankings). If I'm truly qualified, would this even be an issue? I feel that because I'm a URM this will give some preference (in addition to my credentials).

Furthermore, I know that the program considers ACT/SAT scores in regards to admissions. The minimum ACT score is 28 and I have a 28 composite. Would this mediocre score be trumped by my college level performance?

Sorry if I come off as a rambling lunatic.

Any advice/ comments would be appreciated.
