The Official "How Does This Schedule Look" Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Because I'm fairly green as far as Premeds go, I was wondering if anyone had any opinions/ comments on this schedule:

Spring 2012

Biology 2 and Lab- 4 hrs
Chemistry 2 and Lab- 4hrs
Psychobiology- 4hrs

Summer 2012

Organic Chemistry 1 and Lab- 4hrs

Fall 2012
Organic Chemistry 2 and Lab- 4hrs
Calculus 2- 4hrs
Chemistry major seminar- 1hr
Quantitative Analysis- 3hrs
.

Your Fall '12 schedule looks rough, but manageable. Besides it is good to have a couple of difficult, stressful semester to prove to yourself and to med schools that you can handle the rigor.

^^

Your fall semester seems like a lot but I've heard that cell bio is a breeze.
btw why are you registered for two semesters of "Intro to Literary Study?

Cell bio can depend on the professor and their teaching/testing style.

Here's my Schedule for the summer

Summer A
General Chemistry II w/ lab - A+ (Completed)
Intro to Religion - Dropped (worst class ever idk why I even took it)

Summer B
Anatomy and Physiology II w/ Lab
Trigonometry

Current Schedule for Fall
Biology II w/ Lab
Organic Chemistry I w/ Lab
Applied Statistics
Biomedical Ethics

^ should I add another class?

Also, on top of those classes, I will be doing various other EC's/Volunteering:
Currently volunteering 12 hr/wk at ER and Triage.
Shadowing 4 hr/wk at Internists clinic starting Sept.
Currently volunteering with "Children of Inmates" Program

Is my load too much or too little or just right?

If you have like an easy elective or core class you need go ahead and add it, otherwise your schedule looks fine as is.

It's a full year course (6.00 units). The other ones are 3.00 units. Keep in mind, I study in Canada so I have no idea how to state this is American terms. Also, my schedule just might undergo a major revamp since ALL THE COURSES I WANT ARE FULL 🙁

Fall-Sophomore Year
Organic Chemistry I (3cr)
Molecular Bio w/lab (4cr)
Psych370: Sensation & Perception (3cr)

I assume you're an entering freshman. Are you planning on any ECs?

Yes, entering freshman. I'm in a leadership program that is a godsend when it comes to ECs... They set us up with all of these opportunities like service trips, Habitat for Humanity etc... Plus I get a chance to become an officer/leader on a bunch of organizations on campus.

Also I'm enrolled in a school run shadowing program during the Spring semester where I shadow students and doctors at the local med school clinic. I'm trying to secure a research spot, but doing so is hard for freshman (but I do have previous research experience, so that may help).

Trying not to overload, so we'll see where I am after the first semester and I can adjust accordingly. Bio I and Calc I should be semi-review after reading the syllabi as I took IBs and APs in my senior year.

Looks good to me 👍

Thanks! Everything but my 7:55 chemistry class seems perfect to me. 😛

Can I take a wild guess and say you go to Stanford?

Freshman year, first semester. Tested out of a lot of stuff with AP credit (don't know if I'll take higher level stuff for colleges that don't accept that just yet...)

BIOC 101- Career Opportunities (1cr) (not my idea, required for the biochem major)
CHEM 113- Fundamental Chemistry 1/w lab (4 cr)
MATH 106-Analytical Geometry & Calculus 1 (5 cr)
SPAN 102- Beginning Spanish 2 (5 cr) (minoring in Spanish)

part time job (@ 15 to 20 hrs)
volunteering (hopefully, prolly only 3 hrs)
Total: 15cr

also, don't know if this is the place to ask this, but I've kinda been planning on taking chem and physics courses that are geared less towards the generals and more towards intensive skills needed for professional work in a lab (if that makes sense). Good idea, or should I stick with the courses which they describe as "intended for students who need an understanding of blah blah for their major"? They actually push more towards the generals for my major (biochem)...

Biology Core 011 class and lab - 4 Credits
Chemistry 031 class and lab - 4 Credits
Math 010 (Precalc) class - 3 Credits
Elementary Chinese - 4 Credits
Chinese Characters - 1 Credit

I'm an incoming freshman. Does this schedule look manageable? I don't really plan on having any academic EC's. I do plan on continuing my internet marketing (a nice EC for me that I've been doing for years). If I can ace these science related classes, I will be placed in the premed program which would allow me to shadow and volunteer in the campus hospital.

How is that for freshman year first semester ? INTD is a freshman writing course. Not too sure about having Bio and Chem one after another because I think its important to review a lecture shortly afterwards.

🙂 First Post Ever. Anyway this is my freshman schedule, first semester:
General Biology (4 credits)
General Chemistry (4 credits)
Pre-Calculus (4 credits)
Intro to Psychology (3 credits)
Advanced Composition (3 credits)
So that's a grand total of 18 credits, and quite frankly I'm worried. :scared:
Is this too much for my first semster?
Responses would be appreciated.

I told all of my friends that were freshman this semester to not take 18 credits. It is just a lot for someone who has never been in a college classroom to handle.

That being said. Keep biology and chem, math and English. You can always take psychology another semester.

I say drop psychology.

thanks for replying, I think I will follow your advice with psych and take it later.

I'm going to be a junior and I'm a prospective MD/PhD applicant.

Fall 2011:
OChem II + Lab (1.5 credits)
Biochem I (1 credit)
Physics II Lab (0.5 credits)
History of Science dist req (1 credit)

Total of 4 credits (normal load at my school is between 4 and 5)
I'll also be taking an MCAT course (test date Jan 2012) and working in a lab

Spring 2012:
Biochem II (1 cr)
Biochem Lab (1 cr)
Cell Bio or Molecular Bio (1 cr)
Some form of bio lab (0.5 cr)
Research (1 cr)

4.5 credits

Questions:
Should I take cell bio or molecular bio? Cell bio is really tough at my school (really high workload) but molecular bio is not. I'm really leaning towards molecular bio not only because of the workload but I'd also like to take a more in-depth look at mol bio (my intro class was interesting but not that in-depth). Does cell bio look better on my application?

Thanks for your help, I'm brand new!

Personally, it seems like a lot to be undertaking 18 credits (especially the classes you are taking) on top of a mandatory work study. Just my $0.02.

Freshman year schedule:

Calc III (4 cr)
Chem w/lab (5 cr)
Writing 1 (3 cr, wah mandatory, wish I didn't have to take...)
Medicine and Society (3 cr, anthro class)
Topics in Health and Community (1 cr, mandatory with above anthro class, pretty sure it's a blow off pass/fail class)

It adds up to 16 credits but it's really more like 15... any thoughts? Thanks 🙂

Tolerable for a first semester. But why are you taking Calc 3? Is it required for your major?

Immunology (Lecture - No Lab)
Physics I (Lab)
Organic Chemistry II (Lab)
Easy Elective

😕

Fall 2011 (17 cr)

Biology I + Lab (4 cr)

I plan on doing a summer research program after freshman year.

fall sophomore

physics 1 lecture& lab-5 hours
sociology-3 hours
12 hours

spring
physics 2&lab- 5 hours
ochem 2&lab- 4 hours

I didnt want to go to heavy, since I want to do research/activities/etc. Is the schedule too light? I plan on studying for the mcat over the summer after sophomore year and taking it in august before school.

Seems easy. Keep in mind O Chem II is way easier than O Chem I. You should be just fine. I loved physics I. I can't say anything about immuno as I'm taking it next semester too, hopefully it will be fun.

Looks pretty standard but also a little top heavy. Not overly so, but if you feel overwhelmed at the beginning of the semester don't hesitate to drop a class (Art or Psych).

Fall freshie
gen chem 1&lab-4 hours
gen bio 1& lab- 4 hours

I think this is a good first semester freshman schedule. Not too hard, not too easy. 👍

I'm going to assume the biochemistry is a seminar like class since your also only taking general chemistry.

It really seems heavy to me for your first semester in college. I made the same mistake my freshman year and I'm still paying for it in my GPA (2 C's really screw you). Maybe drop neuro?

Senior Year 1st semester:

Bio 494: Advanced Study Practicum: Anatomy/Physiology (3)
Chm 233: General Ochem 1 (3)
Chm 237: General Ochem 1 Lab/Recitation (1)
Kin 414: Electromyographic Kinesiology (3)
Kin 422: Motor Control for Special Populations (3)
PGS 466: Abnormal Psychology (3)
PHY 114: General Physics 2 Lab (1)

ECs: research, volunteering, tutoring at my high school (2 hours/week)

my precalc is actually 4 hours-my mistake!
so my(revised) first year will actually look like this-

bio 1&lab-4 hours
chem1&lab-4 hours
pre-calc-4 hours
english-3 hours
seminar-1 hour

spring
bio2&lab-4 hours
chem2&lab-4 hours
calculus-4hours
english -3 hours
seminar-1 hr

is 16 hours a semester too much for first year, will I be able to have a life lols

Don't take intro to biochem as it is a course aimed towards nurses and animal tech people and DO NOT take a neuroscience course with out intro to biology done.

Also I'm enrolled in a school run shadowing program during the Spring semester where I shadow students and doctors at the local med school clinic.

Thanks! Everything but my 7:55 chemistry class seems perfect to me. 😛

Bet the shadowing program will be a godsend. But why have chem at an ungodly hour of the morning?

The "intro to biochem" class is called "Horizons in Biological Chemistry" and is required for biochemistry majors.

I looked up that neuroscience course, and I need to complete Introduction to Psychology as a prereq before taking that class.

Thanks for you input btw

Fall:

3 cr - Organic Chemistry I (MWF)
4 cr - Cell Biology (MWF)
5 cr - Spanish II (M-F)
3 cr - English 1500 Creative Writing (MWF)

EMT-B Certification (TTH 6-10 PM)

Volunteering Tuesday and Wednesday in the E.R. @ 4 hours total for now

Good luck trying to understand neurophysiology and neuroanatomy without a good grasp of cell bio.

Will medical schools take note of/care that I took undergraduate courses in philosophy of medicine, health policy, or death/dying? Or do they generally not have enough time when reviewing a transcript to look @ specific not-required classes?

Fall
Gen Chem I (I took IB Chem, passed both AP/IB tests)
Gen Physics II
Calculus III
Anthropology

A total of 15 credits

I have a plethora of AP/IB/Dual Enrollment credits (66 total) and am an incoming freshie, majoring in Chemical Engineering. I took a total of 21 credits dual enrolled at a local community college/state u during my high school years earning A's in all classes (including Gen Bio 1, Gen Bio 2, Gen Physics 1).

I've been thinking of dropping Gen Physics from first semester and instead taking Abnormal Psych or some English class (maybe even genetics?). Would this be better than the schedule I currently have? When should I take the rest of my prereqs?

Any advice would be appreciated greatly!

😱
And to think I felt proud with my 22 incoming credits...
Well congratuations on being, simultaneously, a freshman and a junior

This past summer (summer 2011) semester I did 11 credits, including Bio 1 and 2 (4.0 so far).... I graduated from HS early (homeschooled) and I'm doing first year of college at a CC, so I'm taking it kind of lightly....
Fall 2011
Chem 1
Eng 1
Into to Communication
History 101
PED

Spring 2012
Chem 2
Eng 2
Stats
Random Humanities/arts class
PED

Summer 2012
Calc 1 (I wanted to single this one out, because I didn't have full on exposure to calculus in HS, and I really want an A on this).

Fall 2012 (Hopefully transferred to a Uni now)
Physics 1
Org Chem 1
Stats
Advanced Bio course (cell bio, molecular, eco, etc.)

Spring 2012
Physics 2
Org Chem 2
Advanced Bio course
Gen. ed

Btw- Major is Biochemisty. In my opinion, two hardest pre meds for me will be calculus and physics. Is this schedule decent? Is it ok to just end all math at Calc and Stats, nothing more? Thanks...

Thanks!!!
You should still feel quite proud of yourself!!! 22 credits isn't anything to laugh about!

I only wish I could apply all of them towards my major.... I took classes out of interest and looking back, It would have been better to have taken classes that would've helped me my upcoming years....

Also quite a big drawback is that I'll have to focus MCAT study on Bio and Gen Physics 1, as by the time I plan to take the MCAT, it'll have been 3-4 years after I took the classes (but i suppose that's what a review book is for).

On the bright side it should pad my sGPA/cGPA quite nicely....

Chemistry II with lab - 5cr
Physics with lab - 4cr
Genetics with lab - 4cr
2D Design - 3cr
Public Speaking - 3cr

Total = 19 credits!

While volunteering 8hrs/week and working a minimal amount

Anybody?
