The Official "How Does This Schedule Look" Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Entering Spring semester of my Junior year:

L320 Immunology (3 hours)
C409 Chemical Research (3 hours)
B486 Gene Expression and Physiology (3 hours)
K300 Statistics (3 hours)
Z460 Animal Behavior (3 hours)

Is this too soft a schedule? I mean I did have my prereqs finished before the year started.

Definitely not a soft schedule at all. Immuno and what sounds like a molecular genetics class are tough classes. But I think it is a completely doable schedule.

Interestingly, the gene expression course is in the chem department through biochemistry! It has a bit more of a chemical/mechanistic focus of the processes.

Hi,

It is my first time posting here so I apologize if this post is in the wrong place. I'm in my last year and go to a school with a quarter system. For the winter 2012 quarter, I plan on taking (both science courses are offered by the Biology department):

1. Evolution
2. Ecology and Conservation Biology
3. Other/Undecided Class

I only need a few more classes to graduate so I'm taking a light load my last year. What I am worried about though is if both of these 2 bio classes count towards the BCPM gpa. Anybody have any ideas about this? (esp. Evolution?)

Spring Semester 2012:
Gen Chem I
Gen Chem I Lab
Gen Bio I
Gen Bio I Lab
Trig
Speech
Possible online psych class
Total: 19 units

Summer Semester 2012:
Gen Bio II
Gen Bio II Lab

Spring Semester 2012:
Gen Chem I
Gen Chem I Lab
Gen Bio I
Gen Bio I Lab
Trig
Speech
Possible online psych class
Total: 19 units

Summer Semester 2012:
Gen Bio II
Gen Bio II Lab

Freshman year? That seems pretty heavy for spring semester. I had a very similar schedule (trig was statistics, and psych was english) and surprisingly, the hardest class turned out to be speech.

Probably won't be the same for you, but I'd recommend not taking the speech class.

Gen Chem 1
Gen Chem 1 lab
Calc 1 (+ supplementary 2 credit workshop.. meh, it enables me to earn hon credits for the class..)
Honors American Gov class
Gen Bio 2 (class focused on plants/taxonomy/etc)
Gen Bio 2 lab

Thinking of dropping gen bio 2 because all of these will total 19 credits (I don't even know if they will even let me proceed with this schedule anyway..)

Thoughts/advice on my schedule? Thanks! 👍

I was talking to my advisor, and we came up with this. The school is transferring from quarters to semesters.

Winter Quarter - Freshmen
Gen Bio II and Lab
Gen Chem II and Lab
Calc III and Lab (Not joking, this school has calc lab...)
Eng 101

Spring Quarter - Freshmen
Gen Bio III and Lab
Gen Chem III and Lab
Calc IV and Lab
Eng 102

Fall Semester - Sophomore
Gen Physics I and Lab
Organic Chem I and Lab
Differential Equations
Linear Algebra

Spring Semester - Sophomore
Gen Physics II and Lab
Organic Chem II and Lab
Statistics or Proofs or Both - depends on how the credits work out.
Eng 2040 Great Books: Literature - to finish the english requirements

Winter Schedule

Genetics w/ Lab- 4 credits

Organic Chemistry 2 w/ Lab- 4 credits

Cellular and Molecular Biology- 3 credits

Some math course- 3 credits

Mind you my weakness is "pure math," also a class I dropped a year ago.
I've definitely shown improvement in applied math however, averaging a 98 in Statistics and getting an "A" in General Chemistry 2.
On top of that, I'll be doing Neuroscience research and volunteering at a hospital and (hopefully) a free clinic. Also, I'm doing this "shadowing program' in my school were I shadow doctors for 2 hrs a week since I have limited shadowing hours.
One last thing, my University does the +/- grading system, just a heads up.
So how is my schedule? 🙂

Thanks for digging through all that.

Before I do more of an analysis, is there a reason that you have to graduate in 4 years? Would it be possible for you to take 5 or 6 years, so that way your courseload per semester is never too crazy?

I really don't have the funds to take more than four years. I am trying to minimize the debt I take on before med school.

That's not too bad of a schedule I think, especially for an applied math major.

Thanks! 👍

If I was to drop one, it would be the American government class. But if you feel like general biology II will be too much then I say drop that and take the government class. It is really dependent on the person. For me at least honors classes were never worth it, extra work = no gain.

Winter Schedule

Genetics w/ Lab- 4 credits

Organic Chemistry 2 w/ Lab- 4 credits

Cellular and Molecular Biology- 3 credits

Some math course- 3 credits

I'm guessing you're a junior or senior? If you are then I think this schedule seems fine.

If you are a sophomore, I feel a little more apprehensive about it. If you are a sophomore who has done extremely well in all of your classes up to this point then I would say you are probably fine with that schedule. If you have struggled (or are struggling) and you feel like it is because of time constraints then I don't think this schedule is good. If that is the case I would replace either of the biology electives with something that is more of a "soft" class. Maybe a psychology, philosophy or anthropology class.

Next semester is the spring semester of my freshman year. This will be my first "serious" semester. The fall was to get me back into the academic mind set. But this spring will be serious business in comparison.

Spring:
Trig 2 Credits
Chem 1 lecture/lab 3/1 Credits
Bio 1 lecture/lab 3/2 Credits
Writing 1 3 Credits

http://i.imgur.com/QrSPF.jpg

Here is how my week will layout. I will attempt to work part time on mwf and have my weekends to study and maybe relax if I'm lucky. I'm sure this schedule is rather average for a science major/pre-med, but it will be my first time up to bat. I'm sure I"ll be fine. If I can get past this one with A's then I'll be confident I can handle the rest.

Spring 2012:
Calculus and Analytic Geometry I
Organic Chemistry I
Symbolic Logic
Intro to Communication Studies
Lifelong Health and Fitness

Spring 2012:

General Physics II (3 credits)
General Physics II lab (1)
Calc II (4)
Biology of Global Change (3)
Cancer Biology (3)
US History since 1877 (3)

Total: 17 credits

Im thinking 16 credits and only working 8-16 hours a week...LMK what you think

Biology 1 4cr
English 4cr
History 4cr
Pre Calc 4cr

Spring 2012:

Neuropharmacology
Neuroanatomy
Pathophysiology- Elective (easy)
Chem 2 w/lab- (Taking Ochem 1 this semester, kinda out of order, so gotta take gen chem 2)
Physics 2 w/lab

17 credits.

General Physics II (3 credits)
General Physics II lab (1)
Calc II (4)
Biology of Global Change (3)
Cancer Biology (3)
US History since 1877 (3)

Total: 17 credits

This seems like a fine schedule, seems like it may get hectic a few weeks during the semester (overlaping tests etc.) but overall I think this will be fine.

When are you taking the MCAT? If you are hoping for 2017, I'm not sure when you plan on taking it since you will just be completing G.Chem II and Physics II at the end of the spring. O.Chem II can be self studied (the little that is on it) IMO.

I think the schedule is fine, if you don't plan on studying for the MCAT. If you do plan on doing it simultaneously I would exercise caution. I had a very similar schedule last spring and that + MCAT prep caused me to not only get some B's I shouldn't have, but a lower that I wanted score on the MCAT.

Physics 2 w/lab : 4 credits
Counseling Psych : 3 Credits
Neural Systems and Behavior : 3 credits
Research Methods w/lab: 4 credits
14 credits
Tuesday to Thursday I'm in class from ~12Pm to ~8Pm. Monday I only have one class and Friday I'm completely free.

Next semester (my last semester) I will be taking:
Monday: Off
Tuesday: Ecology 9:30-10:50
Evolution 11:00-12:20
Music Ensemble 5:00-6:50 (I am a music minor)
Wednesay: Off
Thursday: Ecology 9:30-10:50
Evolution 11:00-12:20
Friday: Off

Total: 7 Credits, twice a week, essentially for 3 hours each day. All in all, I am in love with my schedule and am looking forward to a down semester. Any comments, concerns, criticisms? I'm kinda curious to see what people are doing on their last semester in undergrad?

Wanted to point out that I do work 20-30 hours a week and will be doing so on monday/wednesday/friday just as an FYI.

What do you guys think about my semester? This will be my spring/winter semester of 2012.

Human Physiology III (3)

The ONLY thing I'm actually worried about (and get to choose) is my biology credit. Basically, I opted out of second semester intro to biology because of AP credit, and I'm taking an upper-level course, which is the Molecular Biotech.

What do you guys think? It doesn't have a lab, but the content is extremely related to biochemistry and molecular biology. Would med schools question it at all?

Next semester-

Taking MCAT on Jan 28
Working approx 30hours/week
Volunteer at Hospice 4hours/week
Volunteer at Humane Society 6-8hours/month
Volunteer at Red Cross 6-8 hours/month
Do some shadowing, majority of shadowing will be done in the summer
SI instructor
Biochem research
Microbiology research
Taking Biochem 2(3 credits)
Taking Biochem lab(3 credits)
Graduate Spring 2012

Neglect time with gf and dog until the summer 😵

^ Good God. You make me feel very lazy.

lol, not really that bad. I have half of December and all of January to prepare for the MCAT.

I work on Mon/Wed/Sat/Sun nights.

Only 2 courses to go to which aren't that hard. Research labs are time flexible so I can go in whenever I want.

SI instructor is easy considering its for either Bio1, Chem1, or Organic1(One of those, don't know which one I wanna do yet).

Volunteer work allows me study time, especially if I'm keeping a patient company while they're sleeping.

But I was wondering should I just not do the red cross/humane society volunteer hours?

I posted a new thread about this but then I realized that this thread exists. What do you guys think of this?

Ochem 2 + lab 6 credits
Anatomy + lab 4 credits
Physiology 4 credits

14 credits

I think it's manageable. A TON of memorizing though.

- Developmental Biology(3)(Supposed to be easy)
- Molecular Biology(3)
- Cancer Biology(3)
- Microbiology of Pathogenic Eukaryotes (3)(Supposed to be easy; no tests, but lots of papers and presentations)
- Undergraduate research(1 or 3 hours depending on the independent project and whether I keep Cancer Bio)
- History of WWII(3)
- Molecular Biochem(3)

+ Job(10-20 hours a week), and Fraternity stuff. Probably dropping Cancer Biology though.

Monster Energy stock is going to sky rocket next semester. 👎

Shouldn't be too hard. Just don't cram for tests(7+ days to study) and you should be fine.

O. Chem II is a breeze, for some reason this semester.

Holy crap kid, that's a ton of biology classes. Is it really necessary to take that many at once? If not, I would recommend balancing it out with some humanities or social science classes.

Spring 2012

Gen Chem I with Lab (First 8 weeks)
Gen Chem II with Lab (Second 8 weeks)
Bio II
Physics I

Working part-time - 16 hour shifts on Saturday & Sunday.
Volunteering - 4 hours per week.
Possible 2-4 hour per week mentorship program.
1-2 pre-med club meetings/events per month.
Keeping eyes wide open for any research jobs/opportunities.

Wondering whether trying to add bio II lab and/or physics I lab would be a tad overambitious.

Your schedule isn't too far off from what mine is going to be. I'm taking 12 credits, 6 of which are things I need to finish up, and 6 credits are courses that are recommended which I haven't taken yet. It's your last semester of college so of course you don't have too much left before you graduate! Doing something productive (working, volunteering etc) in the time you'd otherwise be spending in class seems important... I'm doing the same thing pretty much.

I didn't make up my mind about medical school until this past summer, and now I'm in a bit of trouble since this is my senior year. 😳 I'll probably have to do a master's in order for adcoms to take me seriously.

Anywhoo... Here are my classes for the Winter Semester:

-Genetics w/lab
-Mammalian Physiology w/lab
-Physics II
-Organic Chem II
-Fundamentals of Biochemistry

=18 credits

:scared:

If I can make it through the winter semester, I'll be done with the pre-reqs... (sigh) :xf: 🙁

Alright due, to my major undergoing major restructuring my classes have changed, but the good news is I still graduate! :soexcited:

Medical Microbiology (3)
Medical Microbiology Lab (1)
Ecology of Microorganisms (3) (Substitute for Microbial Physiology)
Molecular Mycology (3)
Biostatistics (3)
Easy Online elective (Maybe)

I do not envy you, like at all. I would suggest dropping Mammalian Physiology. I mean, do you even need it for your major, or is it just an elective? Either way I'd be weary of a schedule like that.

Yes, i need it to complete my bio minor and also to offset a low grade I received in a lower level biology. Part of me wants to drop it and take a couple of math courses to boost my sGPA, but I dont know. I'm still trying to figure it out I guess. 😕

Sophmore here. Haven't registered yet, but I think this is what my schedule might look like. I'm doing terrible in Chemistry, but I'm acing Bio and passing Calc, so

Genetics/w lab
Microbiology/w lab
Calculus II
Spanish I
Gen Chem I
Y/N?

Soo..I'm pretty much trying to make up for lost time from taking off a semester for medical reasons...
This semester I took -
LIT 3155 - Writing intensive Contemporary Literature 3 cred
PHY 2048 - Physics 1 calc based 3 cred
PHY 2048L Physics 1 lab 1 cred
CHM 3120C Elementary Analytical Chemistry 4 cred
CHM 3120L - Lab portion
MAC 2282 - Engineering Calculus II 4 cred
I have all A's in the classes right now and I don't feel it's too difficult. However, next semester I am THINKING of taking (already registered for the classes for spring but just holding onto them..)

CHM 2210L - Orgo1 Lab
BCH 3023 - Biochemistry I
BCH 3023L - Biochem I Lab
PHY 2049 - Physics II
PHY 2049L - Physics II Lab
PCB whatever - Cell Bio
PCB L - Cell Bio lab
Expository Writing

Orgo 1 I did well in way back when (a year ago) Cell Bio I did good in at another institution. Just worried about the lab portions. I like to commit a lot to my lab papers.. oh and Biochem

Genetics (3 credits)
Genetics Lab (1 credit)
Organic Chemistry II (3 credits)
Organic Chemistry II Lab (1 credit)
Medical Ethics (3 credits)
Calculus II (3 credits)
Quantitative Analysis (3 credits)
Quantitative Analysis Lab (1 credit)

Biology & Chemistry double major with a minor in Math
