Yup a minority scholarship and diversity scholarship. Brings COA down to 130k with interest over 4 years 🙂
Wow! That’s a pretty great scholarship! So have you accepted that one and turned down CU yet? As you can see, there are some anxious people waiting for an acceptance that only you can give!

Yeah, I turned CU down. It’s such a good school but money talks lol

Highly recommend just relaxing. You’ll be swept up in material before too long and anybody I have asked who said they reviewed said it wasn’t worth it. A lot of the classes feel like review at the beginning anyway before they get into newer material.
Thank you!

I would also add to this that your car doesn’t need to be much of an expense if you work it right. I drove for Lyft in school and made some good money. I think it is the perfect job for dental students and metro Denver area is a great place to drive.
You worked as a Lyft driver in dental school? How many hours a week were you able to put in? Did it make a difference in how much extra cash you had?

I didn’t start until 3rd year when I had more time. Just a few hours here and there after clinic or when a patient would no-show. And it definitely gave me some extra cash.
I wrote an article about it for ASDA that goes more into detail about my experience:

Thanks for sharing your article. After seeing your picture I remembered meeting you. I listened to your presentation during the pre-dental sim lab this summer on ethics in dental practices. Still stands out who spider man should save, Mary Jane or the cable car , both.

I am interested in the National Health Science Corps scholarship. I remember you said you had this scholarship during dental school. Could you tell me how it works? Do you choose the clinic you work in after dental school, or do they choose where you go?

Yeah! That was me. Glad it stuck out enough to remember.
For the scholarship, you usually apply the March right before dental school starts (or of subsequent years if you don’t get it and want to try again). It consists of a few essays, two letters of recommendation, a resume/CV and some other paperwork. If you get the scholarship, it is a year-for-year commitment working for an approved clinic in an underserved area. You get to choose where you go as long as it fits the criteria (has to be an NHSC active site and have a health professional shortage area score, HPSA score, of a certain number). You can search this website to get an idea of the type of clinics that qualify (for reference, my HPSA score had to be 17 or higher:
Health Workforce Connector

The only caution of this particular scholarship is you have to be a “primary care” provider, meaning either a general dentist (you can still do GPR/AEGD) pediatric or public health.

Job well done! When you were awarded the scholarship, did you have to reapply each year? Or did you hash it out once you were accepted how long you wanted to go year-for-year?

Nope, just apply once and you can determine how many years support you want. If you choose 2 and then decide you want more, you can always ask for more. You have a higher chance of getting additional years than you originally had with the scholarship so it’s not hard to get more, but it’s also not a guarantee.

I sent my top choice school a letter of intent but they rejected me, can i send colorado one then since they are my top choice now? I interviewed in late october and am kinda freaking out

Are you in charge of scheduling your own patients? I heard the schools finds patients for you but you are in charge of scheduling?

Even though there are days that I really dislike calling and scheduling patients myself, it’s way better than showing up and just having a bunch of class II’s to do one week because you get to know your patient pool and treatment plan their needs as you would in private practice. Builds rapport and communication skills as well.

Great point, thank you!!!

Question for all of us still waiting to hear back. Would it be a bad idea to contact the school and ask about our status? I mean I interviewed in november and am curious if anyone who interviews then has gotten accepted. If not should we just wait to contact or reach out to them? I’m not sure how the admissions board would perceive our inquiry. Would they appreciate it or find it annoying? Thanks!

I usually recommend not contacting them unless you have something big to report (new/higher DAT, significant volunteer opportunity, significantly more shadowing hours, etc). They have your application and they know where you stand, especially if you interviewed. Be patient.

Is it safe to say if we haven’t heard by now we probably won’t hear before December 31? I don’t want to put my deposit down at another school if there’s still a chance of being accepted into Colorado

I was creeping on last cycles thread and they did sent out some acceptances around this time, but I would assume not hearing anything until at least January.

They will most likely send some acceptances next week after Christmas and most of them probably first couple weeks of January. Based on the FB group it doesn’t seem like they accepted a lot and many of the accepted students have multiple offers

Just curious since I've seen you on so many threads, what made you choose CU over the others?

My decision was narrowed to UCSF, Michigan, and Colorado. I liked all the schools equally except I didn't really like SF that much but the school was amazing. Since I liked all of them equally my decision came down to which gave the best scholarship and Colorado blew them out of the waters. My decision to go to CU was also an easy one because I've spent a lot of time on their campus and the atmosphere is just amazing and the students and faculty are really nice. In terms of their programs, I think CU has a very strong clinical program and many graduates from CU feel very comfortable practicing right after graduation. They also had all 30 students last year match into program so specializing out of CO if I choose to is also doable!

Congrats to your friend!! Just wondering but did they get a phone call as well? Or just the email?

just declined my spot, really hard decision for me since they gave me a $20k/year scholarship
Good luck to everyone still waiting!

Which school are you going with instead, an instate option?

I haven’t heard a thing... no invite, rejection, anything. Is anyone in the same boat? Getting a little nervous since I know interviews can’t go for much longer

Not in the same boat, but CU does tend to interview until March.

Anyone been accepted recently?
