So I was just looking at the tmdsas status page, and just noticed that the "you do not have multiple offers" thing blinks. Like they have to rub it in that much more, they need to add some laughter in the background to finish it off.

I know, right? And next they'll add a hand that will come out and slap you with a boot that will kick you in the groin to complete the package.

Hey guys how's it going. I've been offered a spot at both Galveston and Dallas and don't know which to pick. I'm from Dallas and it has always been my dream school, but when I went there I wasn't so sure, and ended up falling in love with Galveston. Do you think I am messing up an opportunity by not going to utsw. My head is telling me one thing, my heart another. Thanks

I randomly got a UTMB acceptance in the mail today! I wasn't expecting anything from them because I interviewed early October and hadn't heard anything from them until I checked the mail earlier today. Anyway, it was a nice Christmas present :hardy:

WOW!!! Congratulations!!!!! These are great news!!!! And right before christmas! Enjoy it and celebrate.. and it was by mail? Well, this is an excellent school, i will be waiting for mine too😀

Keep in mind that you'll be there ~4 years, so it better be somewhere that you'll like. 😉

Hey I already posted in the general forum before realizing this would be a better place to seek advice.

I've suddenly found myself in difficult situation. I currently hold acceptances to UTMB and UTSW and UTSW has always been my #1 choice. But yesterday I got an email from UTMB awarding me a full scholarship to go there. and the conditions of the scholarship are, 1) i decline all my other acceptances 2) I have one week to decide if i will accept the offer or not.
As much as i like UTSW, graduating from med school without a debt sounds like an very good deal. I don't know what to do
Please can you share your thoughts or advice? I will greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

I got E. histolytica 3 times. BIG 👎 I also got falciparum malaria. Then, a couple of months before I left, I got into a motorcycle accident in the bush and had to have surgery to remove gravel that got stuck in my arm.

Crap. How long does that stuff last? Forgive my ignorance, but doesn't malaria give you delirium?

In the field, it's pretty much up to you to make stuff happen. I mean you can call your supervisor if you have major work problems, but for the most part you have to take care of your own business. There is zero budget for anything. People usually raise money in the village or use a program where your relatives can donate money to your projects.

Sounds like an intense Management Training Program. Seems it would be incredibly frustrating to have to raise $$ for your projects (from among poor people no less), and then have to motivate people who are unenthusiastic about what you're doing. Did you ever get the "Oh great, another foreign do-gooder has come to save us from ourselves." attitude?

Um, no. Your "celebrity" is only good for making you the village laughingstock and raising prices on everything that you want to buy.

Oh, I was thinking Hollywood, not sideshow freak or leper. Ouch.

No, I don't miss it at all. Also, there is a small minority over there that straight up hate white people and can get pretty in your face about it. Encountering those fools was fun. 😎

Is that what passes for entertainment? White she-devil vs The Racist....village plaza at noon today.

I think as far as the compassion goes, that's not something that they are ever taught or instructed on. Education over there discourages original thought and creativity, so unless someone told them to think about it they wouldn't. That might sound insulting, but it's true. They don't write papers or do art or anything that we encourage kids to do to be creative. I think that takes a toll at all levels and people never venture out of their box to think how others live their lives. They don't ever really try to think about how others might be feeling.I think it's just a matter of doing trainings on that and counseling techniques.

Hmmm....I've always thought of empathy as a mostly natural trait that gets developed through normal socialization, and that later this induces compassion. Never thought of it as related to creativity per se, though if it's not valued or even discouraged by the culture, I guess it would need to be brought out in the fashion you described.

BTW, thanks for sharing.

The full ride would be a no-brainer for me. Take it! UTMB is a fine medical school.

Heck yea. If I were in your situation, I would choose UTMB w/o hesitation. 😀 Unless you feel that you wouldn't be happy at UTMB for some reason.

I would pick UTMB as well, it's an old and established medical schools. Besides, if you have scores good enough to grant you full rides, i'm sure you'll do just fine on your boards (which is what residencies care about anyways).

I would not want to be in your position right now. Congrats on the full ride!!!

Yeah you would, we all would. 😉

Does your scholarship cover tuition and fees? What about living expenses? Texas schools in general are a comparative steal, but the UTMB deal sounds pretty sweet. Just be aware that a "full scholarship" doesn't mean you'll have no debt at the end of your four years.

congrats on the offers.

Crap. How long does that stuff last? Forgive my ignorance, but doesn't malaria give you delirium?
Amoebic dysentery can last a while and usually it builds until one day you have blood and mucus coming out at the frequency of once an hour. Not huge volumes, but it's painful with lots of cramps and spasming.

Malaria for me was the worst headache that i've ever had. the pain went all the way down my neck and into my spine. it hurt so bad that i couldn't move my neck or walk. Luckily, I was pretty sure that I had it, so I took the treatment that's given to you by PC. The next day I was significantly better. The species that I had, P. falciparum, can cause cerebral complications such as coma, convulsions, and delirium if not treated immediately. This is especially true in young children or expats with no immunity.

It is frustrating, but that's how you can gauge the willingness of people in your projects. I mean everyone will go along with your ideas, but when it comes to doing the work/raising the money no one will do it. I think it's necessary for people to have a financial stake in the projects and regardless of how poor you are you can give 50 cents or a dollar even.

when i started projects, it was usually me and one other village person, then as things got rolling others would join in to help.

Is that what passes for entertainment? White she-devil vs The Racist....village plaza at noon today.

Not really, the people that aren't like that are embarassed that a guest is treated this way. they are very hospitable people. you shouldn't ever make a guest feel uncomfortable, in that way at least.

Hmmm....I've always thought of empathy as a mostly natural trait that gets developed through normal socialization, and that later this induces compassion. Never thought of it as related to creativity per se, though if it's not valued or even discouraged by the culture, I guess it would need to be brought out in the fashion you described.
It isn't really valued or encouraged and the people that go to med school aren't looking to help others at all either, just make a steady paycheck. even though it's not huge, there is an amount of authority that comes with being a healthcare provider, and people use it to belittle the patients and feel important.

i don't mind sharing at all. sharing of volunteer experiences and encouraging understanding of other cultures on the side of americans is the 3rd goal of Peace Corps. 🙂

i hope that others weren't too annoyed by my extremely long posts!

I go to UTMB. The cost of attendance this year for me (off-campus) was $36,996. That includes everything...tuition, books, a one-time computer allowance of 3000, and living expenses.

I just received a letter from San Antonio Today!!!!!!!!!!! Snail mail off course! But is my acceptance!!!!!!!! I cant believe it! That was one of my top schools and i really liked it!!!!! Happy Christmas everybody i hope to see more of us getting offers!!!!!1:banana::banana::banana::banana::biglove::biglove::biglove::biglove::banana::banana::banana::biglove:

How is housing down there? Is it cheap near the medical center?

How is housing down there? Is it cheap near the medical center?

Lots of options. Dorms, frats, UTMB apts near the ferry. Some people buy houses near campus, or rent them with others. There are apts on both sides of island...ones near UTMB are cheaper, but not quite as nice. There are condos down by the ferry, downtown (like on The Strand, coverted from old buildings...$$), and the high-rise ones along the beach$$$$🙂. Some also live in the Clear Lake/League City area, and one guy I know lives in downtown H-town. I know people doing each of those, except the high-rise...

I live in an apt near UTMB...1 bed, ~640sqft. $656 with electric, water, and extended cable included.

Congratulations drgop1!!! I'll be a fellow classmate of yours! Good to see that UTHSCSA is sending out more acceptances this week... I'm rootin' for all of you who are still patiently waiting!

Army, are you still gone for your wedding? Hope it went well!
PreMDAshley: I hope you get San Antonio soon!
BuBot: congrats again on UTMB! Was UTMB a top choice of yours out of all the TX schools? I know you probably don't know which "one" I am... haha.. But here's a clue, I was the better student when you were our TA. hahahaa.

Hey BUdoc! UTMB is definitely one of my top choices, so I'm thrilled to get an acceptance there. As for who you are, I don't remember who made the better grade since everyone did so well in the lab. I'm pretty sure I know who you are now though since you mentioned San Antonio. Is that your top choice?

Haha awesome. UTMB is such a great school... I didn't even get to interview there! Anyways, yeah, SA is my top choice. I'm choosing between SA and TCOM right now... but after putting a lot of thought into it during the last week or so, I'm definitely about 95% sure about doing MD/MPH at UTHSCSA!

Are you taking cell phys next semester, or have you already taken it? I saved it for the very end... haha. (But I don't have any classes MWF so I'm pretty excited about this upcoming semester!)

Well good luck in San Antonio if you decide on that route! I took cell phys this past semester with Beardoc and another of your fellow lab partner. (I graduated so I won't be coming back to Baylor.) Cell Phys is pretty much biochem all over again, so you'll do fine in there.

I want to wish everyone a happy holiday season. That is Merry Christmas to me, but I wanted to be politically correct. Wouldn't it be nice if match was at 11:59 on Christmas Eve and everyone could get the "package" they want? I actually told the Santa that I wanted a match for Christmas, or at least in February, when I took my kids to get picture today. Desperation and uncertainty drive you to do strange things!

Have fun and enjoy the time with family, friends and loved ones!

Hey guys, for those of you who got into UTSW or UTMB, have you received anything important in the mail from them lately? I've been out of town and I haven't been able to check my mailbox.

Does anybody know if San Antonio will offer any more pre match offers before the 31st?

Merry Christmas to everyone!

(That's right. I said it. 😛)

Does anybody know if San Antonio will offer any more pre match offers before the 31st?

When I called last week, the word was definitely some by the 31st. Don't know for certain when or how many. It seems someone got one yesterday, but not me...🙁

Oh, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! I, too, have told Santa what I want...😉

Thanks

Go where you will be happy. Sounds like a no-brainer that you will be more happy in Galveston.

Unforunately, people often get caught up in 'this school is better than that school' situations, when in fact, few med schools are 'better' than others. Personally, I think that the best schools in Texas are Texas Tech, UTMB, UTHSC-SA, Texas A&M. I feel like Southwestern and Houston are at the bottom of the barrel for medical school in Texas. They are unnecessarily large for medical student training and cause unnecessary hassles for student living conditions....

You can ONLY see one patient at a time.. I dont care how large of a hospital you are in. Residency Training is much more important for size/patient population. Medical School is the pure basics and insight to how the hospital and medicine works...go where you can be VERY comfortable and enjoy yourself.

I lived in a 3 bedroom brick home in Lubbock, TX about 5 mins from class....a buddy lived 60 mins from UTSW in a small studio apt. We both are doctors, I am sure he is happy but I think I had a better time....

Wow, thats a great deal, yeah, you might have to shell out a bit on top of what they're giving you, but still, way better to be 20K in debt than to be 140K in debt.

Unnecessary hassles? I don't know anything about UTSW, but here at UT-H there is a school-owned apartment complex 1.7 miles from school, with a shuttle bus. And lots of condos and apartments along the rail, which gets you to school in 10 minutes.

I agree that you can get a great medical education at a school that doesn't necessarily have like 7 hospitals attached to it. But, I think that being exposed to different populations during 3rd year can only be an asset-- one rotation you could be working with a specialty clinic w/ people being referred in from all over for rarer conditions, on another rotation you'd be in county seeing more of the nuts and bolts. I think it works out well.

UTSW has medpark, a campus-owned apartment complex. They also have a shuttle.

Hopefully by the time you get back we'll all have some good news.

For those that go to UT, does the transcript order form have a preset option to send to TMDSAS? I don't remember if I had to manually type in their address.

Also, since I'm still waiting on Baylor, is it a good idea to send them my grades if I did well this semester?

Do you know if it covers living expenses as well? You may not graduate without debt and keep in mind that you'll be paying interest on whatever you loan out before you actually pay it all back. $40,000 in tuition is something like $70,000 when you pay for it after 15-20 years. Interest is a *%*#(.

I would send them my grades if I were still in school. Most schools ask that you send updates and another semester of all A's (that seems to be a trend for you) definitely wouldn't hurt. I dont know if there is a way to bundle them, but if you have been participating in shadowing or some other extracirricular, I would also include that.

That said, I get the feeling its just a matter of time for you and Baylor. I look forward to hearing about your acceptance.

Maybe you'll still choose to join me at UTSW, though. Either way, best of luck.

If it's only your dream school before and not after... then that's the point of looking. Don't suffer because of what you thought the school would be like. Again, it is 4 years!

I GOT INTO BAYLOR!! YAY!!!!

Will be withdrawing my UTMB acceptance as soon as everything is finalized. Hope it goes to one of you guys!! 👍👍👍

Sorry for my absence since pre-match day. The books were calling me!

Hi, I need help deciding b/t UTHSCSA and UTMB by Jan. 15. I'm from San Antonio, so I could save a lot of money by living at home. But i was really really impressed w/ UTMB's curriculum, board scores, and global health tract. Anyone have any thoughts, preferences, advice?? Thanks!

Does at home = at home with parents? Because in theory a lot of people can do that, however as some point you really need to start thinking about getting your own place. Think about the distractions your family might give you or the fact that you might be barging in really late at night. Picking a school because family is close is one thing, but living with your parents is another...

Of course, the most important thing is to be comfortable with where you'll be. If you get homesick, your parents can spend a weekend with you, but you have to be at a med school for 4 years!

*Shudder* Don't bring that up... That would be so hard to decide, especially since I'm from Dallas. Part of me actually wishes I don't get to make that decision. 😳

What? I would think going to Tech or A&M would be more of a "hassle" as you have to move. I live uptown in a ~750 square foot apartment and am 5 min from school with traffic and all our hospitals. For me I chose UTSW for the great clinical opportunites (we are big enough that the residents have done all their required procedures by the end of July so they actually let med students get more hands on training and we get to see patients in the private, public, and indigent setting). I'm sure ppl at UTH and BCM feel similarly about the TMC which is outstanding. Also from what I have been told by residency and fellowship directors grades DO matter BUT they take a good look at where your coming from. You will certainly get a good education at any school in the state but, obviously a larger institution will have more resources available and a higher tiered program will arguably be regarded by program directors more favorably. Without knocking another school I would say UTSW and BCM (and here UTH) routinely get knocked by ppl at other programs (interview trail, undergrad premeds). I would suggest evaluate the programs based on what they can offer you, where you feel YOU will get the best training and where you fit in.

*Shudder* Don't bring that up... That would be so hard to decide, especially since I'm from Dallas. Part of me actually wishes I don't get to make that decision. 😳

So... apparently I DO have to make that decision.

Baylor or UTSW. Good god, Chirstmas HAS come early.

SANTA IS HERE!!! 😍
