Nobody said we know how long it will take to get a vaccine.

And nobody said we should "stay locked down forever". Each locality should be evaluated independently to gradually ease restrictions. But those that do need to prepare to ramp them back up if cases spike.
If you can show me a commercially available vaccine against any RNA virus I will hold out hope of a vaccine......

"It’s time to put on our big boy pants and turn testing into a real industry so that every American who wants a COVID test can get one.
But instead of taking that on, the White House task force is abandoning ship."...

"Testing needs to be turned into a scale industry that can safely process millions tests/day. This will mean open sourcing, barcoding, logistics, R&D investment and ubiquitous points of service. It also means challenging incumbents & breaking up control.
Congress just allocated $25 billion to testing. That money can get all of this done IF spent with an industrialization plan."...

"Our country is increasingly dependent on massively increasing testing. Unless we dramatically increase availability, our economy will remain stalled & our horrible death count will continue.
This is achievable but it won’t happen on its own. It requires federal leadership & a willingness to bang heads. $25 billion shouldn’t just float into the ether.
Testing is just one of the things a high functioning national task force with clear leadership can make happen.
Leaders are jumping ship when there is much to do."

Regarding reinstating the lockdowns if things start looking bad, from what I’ve heard from top economists, that would be significantly worse for the economy than if you had not reopened in the first place. That means once you reopen, you better get it right. I wonder how many places will, considering that the plan the fed govt and most states seem to have is: We’ll make it up as we go.

And nobody said we should "stay locked down forever".
No, but the media with all their hyperbole come awfully close to advocating this until a vaccine is discovered, while throwing in the dramatic "trading dead bodies for 401k's" comments. Of course, none of the media is refusing their paychecks or donating them in full.
Each locality should be evaluated independently to gradually ease restrictions. But those that do need to prepare to ramp them back up if cases spike.
I think all of the "We can't devastate the economy much longer" people agree with you on that. Even Sweden. (assuming by spike you mean approaching healthcare capacity.)

“South Korea went from the largest ex-China COVID outbreak in the world to zero domestic cases in 60 days.

I spoke to Korean residents, politicians, and historians about how they did it—and what the world should learn from them.”

The ****fest begins. Many little Donald Trumps running the show in a lot of places.

What's your estimated date for hitting 500,000 deaths in the US, or closing down again? I have a feeling the latter will take between 30 and 45 days in many states. The medical system will be overwhelmed, and I don't envy healthcare workers in red states.

We shall see. My feeling is that this virus has already ripped through the majority of the population. It is highly contagious and just not that lethal overall to the general population (nursing home population aside) I think these “reopenings” will be by and large successful. Either way we will know in another week.

depends on what you define as successful.

i think some areas will be hit way harder than others, and many companies will go bankrupt. this includes hospitals. many smaller hospitals will go under without outside funding. not sure how that will be solved.

We won’t know anything we don’t already know in another week. We will really know something when we see the numbers at the end of July.

We will see if the hospitals become overwhelmed in georgia. You don’t need numbers to see that. The state has been open (free) for over a week now. If in another week the ICUs are not overwhelmed then the rest of the country should open up as well. Remember the whole reason for the lockdown was to prevent overwhelming the hospitals.

That wasn't the reason. It was one thing that needed to be considered when making policies. Trump himself held a special press conference just a few weeks ago and literally stated the criteria that needed to be met for reopening and the plan for reopening. It was detailed. It wasn't a poster that read "as long as hospitals are not overwhelmed, everything can reopen" lol. He literally completely ditched his own plan that he and the White House just made up lol. Look at the CDC guidelines FFP posted above. Is it just 1 page that says no lockdowns needed if ICU beds available?

Also, a good thread here if anyone interested.

"The White House and most Republicans seem to think that this crisis will be solved by loudly announcing the reopening of the economy. But this is a dangerous misunderstanding of what’s actually driving the recession: It’s the pandemic, stupid. The shutdowns themselves had “little or no impact on economic activity” according to an analysis by a team of economists at Harvard. Several papers now show that the decline in spending and employment in most cases occurred before states officially shut down their economy. Governments didn’t close state economies on their own, and they can’t open the economies on their own, either."

The question is not will it be overwhelmed itsu
Why would Georgia not be overwhelmed?

Why would it fare any differently to NJ, NYC, France uk Italy?

Why do countries or states keep on thinking a theoretical boundary like a line drawn on the map will protect them? I don't think viruses read maps

I've just realized: this is not a "China virus", this is a "Trump virus". It was initially a democrat (remember the hoax?), then it turned republican (and destroyed all those blue states).

It's totally safe to reopen the red states, just watch! It will be a-maz-ing.

Can't speak for Europe, but don't forget Dumb and Dumber at the state and local level in NY did everything possible to make Trump look like a Public Health Nobel Prize winner. Let's not forget the denial and delay in closing everything from parades to schools, and the doozy of them all, every bit as absurd as injecting Lysol, let's send covid positive patients back to the nursing homes. What could possibly go wrong there?

Yes, you won't find that one being discussed by Freddo regarding his brother. Andrew Cuomo shot up in the sky like a bright flare at the start of covid, fizzled out quickly, and now his presidential aspirations look as promising as his political little brother, Deblasio.

You seriously think Trump did a better job of handling the pandemic than Cuomo and Deblasio? Trump, who legitimately pondered whether or not we could administer IV bleach? Who put his crony appointee son-in-law in charge of ventilator procurement with a bunch of his friends and college roommates? Who led a federal government response that led to states bidding against one another for ventilators and PPE because he wouldn't lead a coordinated national response? Who threatens the withholding of medical supplies to the states whose governors aren't showing enough gratitude to him? Who has attributed the delayed federal response to the pandemic to the "bare cupboards" left by the Obama administration despite the fact that Trump has been in office for over 3 years? Who is so hellbent on reopening the economy that he is going to discard the recommendations for reopening that his very own task force put out several weeks ago? You continue to defend the indefensible, and I truly cannot wrap my head around how people like you can be so deluded, willfully ignorant, and/or indifferent to the destructive machinations of the megalomaniac currently residing in the White House. I really don't get it.

Deblasio is a blowhard who hasn't done much of anything good for the city during his 2 terms as mayor. I never knew much about Cuomo before the pandemic and so I really never had much of an opinion of him, despite living in NYC for the past 10 years. Cuomo could have closed down the state and overridden Deblasio to close NYC schools earlier, sure, but ultimately, I think his handling of this crisis has been good to great. His daily briefings are everything you should want from a leader during a crisis: facts and data-driven, no-nonsense, and with enough compassion and empathy to really reach out to the public. He has been decisive and demonstrated true leadership.

I am not going to rehash every single thing that Trump has done to mismanage this crisis for you, but just know that your favorable comparison of Trump to Deblasio/Cuomo is laughable.

I live in NYC, and I am not aware of any major parades that occurred during the time period in which it was being debated whether or not to close the schools. So either I'm much more unaware of what's happening in this city than I think I am, or you're just making up some fake news.

Not a parade but Oxiris Barbot was regrettably encouraging people to go out and celebrate Chinese New Years in Queens in mid February. It didn’t help that Deblasio was still working out at the Y in mid March.

I'm sorry you took my post as an endorsement of Trump policy. It clearly wasn't. My point is dumb and dumber in NY should receive equally bad press and they won't. It was very late in the game that the St Patricks parade was canceled. Very late in the game that schools were closed. And again, sending Covids patients back to nursing homes.... What an unbelievable disaster. Nobody actually injected Lysol, thankfully. Thousands have died in nursing homes. The bad press for that catastrophic decision is absent. So absent you yourself grade Cuomo as good to great (Reminds me of Trump's self grade of a 10 hahaha). They have all been awful.

Also remember, a national coordinated purchasing response is basically collusion among buyers. Price will be held down, but so will output. Nothing brings product to the market faster than good ol market forces. Greed is good as Gekko would say. Next you'll throw out the government forcing production. Would the equivalent of true Socialism, government taking over private capital, bring more goods to the market faster? Maybe, but probably not.

That wasn't the reason.
That actually was the original reason. Remember flattening the curve?

Now you can certainly make the argument that there are plenty of good reasons to continue down the quarantine/social distancing path, but those were not how this was originally sold to everyone.

We have testing info that suggests that is not the case. Many, most states probably have had well under 5-10% of their population infected so far. There are probably locations like NYC where it is closer to 30-50%.

There is a hypothesis (turning more and more into evidence) that the US infections started in NYC, hence NYC is way ahead of the rest of the country.

Lets also not forget that after months of Covid in NY and the Guv frantically begging for assistance and volunteers, they just recently decided it might be a good idea to disinfect the subways and remove the homeless people living on them. Brilliant!

But let's not forget about all the unintentional consequences.
This virus has (hopefully) highlighted for people all the cracks in the system and the injustices in this country.

People complained that NYC schools weren't shut down early enough. The NYC school system is the largest in the country. There was a lot of worry about how kids would be safe at home and get fed. Thankfully now kids are getting meals, but it's not like that was able to be organized overnight.

The subway was kept open because that's how people get to work. Not everyone that is an essential worker can afford to take a taxi or uber. They've now arranged buses to transport people. Homeless people on the subway is typically a safe haven for them. Homeless shelters aren't a great or safe option. I have a lot of patients living in homeless shelters and the stories they tell me are horrific. We need long term solutions.

I'm not saying there aren't things that governors and mayors couldn't have done better, but a lot of the complaints I see from people don't grasp the full understanding or knowledge of unintended consequences of certain decisions.

The complaints against NY state and local govt, when coming from certain people, are worthwhile to listen to and should be taken seriously since missteps were made and future planning can be done better.

The complaints, when coming from certain jokers, are absolute bullsht that are being made solely for the purpose of whataboutism, deflection, and trump apologism. They're not interested in actually making the system better or holding people accountable- they just don't want dear leader being the only one stinking up the spotlight.

Absolutely! So many want for reduce this pandemic to binary choices, some to score political points. It a terrible situation with a host of "best of the bad choices available" to be made. I have said before we need to find ways to live with the virus until we find an effective treatment or a vaccine. Sadly, we will be learning as we move forward as more people will die as we learn. We have to be creative and find ways to live and work in a safer manner while protecting the vulnerable. Recent data indicate over 10,000 deaths from covid in nursing home residents and workers. This pandemic is truly Man vs Nature, and Nature is cruel, cherry picking the easiest victims. We need to do our best not to help Nature harvest more victims, while feeding and caring for our vulnerable.

Here's a good article about why wearing masks is important.
Too bad people are protesting masks and evening shooting workers that ask them to put on masks 🙁
I seriously do not understand the outrage. I know a couple of people who have trauma from masks (sexual abuse) so they're trying to figure out alternatives, but I don't think they're the people out protesting masks. It's disheartening to not see our leaders in masks when they are out doing publicity visits as well.

This is Trump's favorite network and the one he calls on first in his media briefings. Also, interesting how this virus is a hoax or no more lethal than the flu yet also so lethal that it's being used for population control.

There were definitely missteps made by the political leaders of NY. Deblasio going to the gym as the shelter in place order was being put out perfectly encapsulated just how incredibly tone-deaf and oblivious of a leader he is. And I definitely agree that, ultimately, schools were shut down way too late (though as others have alluded to, closing down the schools in NYC has additional downstream ramifications beyond just educating children, i.e., childcare, nutrition, etc). There was a pretty good article in The New Yorker contrasting the measures taken between Seattle and NYC in the early stages of learning that there was an impending disaster in their communities. The longstanding feud between Cuomo and Deblasio has led to ineffective communication between the state and city (e.g., who has authority to close down and reopen the schools), and I certainly wish the two of them would set aside those differences to come together during this crisis. The fact that the number of joint news briefings they've had together can be counted on one hand just goes to show how that hasn't been the case, unfortunately.

But Cuomo has been a force when it comes to coordinating a response effort with other states. He has been decisive and, for the most part, effective once the depths of this crisis began to take shape. Again, I really had no opinions of him despite the fact that he's been my governor for years now, but he has since earned my respect.

The Defense Production Act was exercised to increase the production of PPE and vents (albeit a bit later than it should have been). Just curious, do you think this is equivalent to socialism, or that it is unjustified?

For sure. If you are in power and make decisions, then you live with the consequences. If you put Covid positive patients in nursing homes or decide to sanitize subways and remove homeless people living on them months after the shutdown, then you live with the criticism, just as PresTrump must after his decisions and accept that criticism. As far as socialism and the defense production act, the Feds must be able to assist private businesses in ramping up productuon in times of national emergency. Its not socialism, but America first.

The deniers will just say those are regular flu deaths, or that most of the "COVID" deaths are really just the usual cancer deaths and shark attacks that the corrupt deep state operatives at the morgue are falsely categorizing as coronavirus deaths. The objective is either to sabotage an idiot Trump's re-election prospects, or aid a genius Trump's diabolical plan to usher in a dictatorship.

They're impervious to data, even when the data is a body count. It's think it's the most amazing display of cognitive dissonance I've seen in my life. It's worse than the 9/11 truthers.

I’m not a denier. People die from COVID. mostly old and sick but occasionally not.
$hit happens. This lockdown of the economy is beyond foolish and unsustainable. It will bring financial ruin for millions, erase entire industries, quite possibly lead to the utter collapse of real estate. The virus occurred in nature. The real disaster that will come from it is entirely man made....
