Hmm I don't know about that! Haha.
Originally, I am not from California. Moving here, I decided to live in Berkeley with my partner for Master's year. It was a bit of a commute (which wasn't bad in itself), but near a great area with lots of food and activities. And I had a home away from school, so I didn't need to be on campus all the time. The downside was the cost. It is much cheaper to live in Mare Island which is relatively safe! Usually people live in a 2-6 person house depending on availability. Many students do this. But some students do commute, such as myself, and still make it work! You can also live in Vallejo, but certain parts are better than others and usually the accepted FB group will give specific recommendations. Otherwise, people live in Fairfield, Concord, Benicia, etc.
For rotations, since we have like a dozen sites, sometime halfway through 2nd year, you will get a presentation about each of the sites, and you will rank them in order of preference. Then a computer algorithm will randomize who gets what based on preference with 97% of students getting within top 3 choice. I was able to get my first choice rotation spot and I am very happy with it. Even after you get assigned a spot, you are able to trade with other students after the fact, but it can be difficult to get someone to budge if they are happy. Otherwise, most students have been satisfied with their rotation spot, although all rotation spots are not equal quality (a later discussion if you would like).
During rotations, I have loved it. I am not a book study kind of person, more a hands on experience type of student. So I feel like rotations have been amazing for me! We get lots of great experience and my site has been lucky that all rotations have been in person which is not the case for other sites, due to COVID. If you would like to hear more, I am happy to answer specific questions.
Hope that is helpful!
