Touro-COM NY Discussion Thread 2010-2011

Hello,

I have been keeping up with the forums, and someone on here said they had an interview scheduled for january. With this in mind, I assumed I would not be scheduled until sometime in jan-february because my secondary was just complete on friday. However, I have been invited for next month, meaning I only have a few weeks to prepare!

I am really freaked out because this is my first interview ever, and I think this school is my best chance.

Can anyone who has done an interview shed some light on what I can expect? Any help you can render would be greatly appreciated because I am really nervous. Can you Please PM me if you are willing to have a conversation about this?

Thanks,

My interview was last year (I deferred for a year), but the questions were somewhat basic: Why D.O/Why medicine/Why NYC (you should know differences between the two, why you like D.O. better than M.D.)? What makes you want to work in NYC? They asked me specifically if i had any experience doing community service (made me think they like that a lot). What is one tangible way you can impact the harlem community? They often ask you to tell them something about yourself (so know what bulletpoints you want to hit). There are probably tons more that other ppl got asked, but these are some of the ones I heard being asked. Good luck!

For me, they focused on why DO and how I made that decision. I talked about shadowing experiences, and personal experiences. They also asked me how I know that I am prepared for starting med school.

Though, I think it is really the interviewers that you receive. The others on the same day as me had different experiences also. I think they had three different panels that you can meet with. You sit down individually with two people and just have a conversation. It really flows. They don't want the drill sergeant question answer kind of thing. It is really laid back. They're trying to see if you are too, and if you would be a good fit for their "family". (At least thats what one of my interviewers said to me anyways).

hi. I'm not sure exactly but I think I got a similar email on thursday saying that they have received it and will me know. Then friday I got the offer. So yes you are right. My application was complete before friday. Good luck 🙂

Thanks everyone for ask your input 🙂

First of all, congrats on getting an interview! I'm a 1st year at TouroCOM, so I'll be glad to answer your questions.

I think the most important thing is BREATHE. You'll be okay. During my interview last year, they asked me to tell them about myself, and the whole interview was then based on whatever they found interesting in what I said about myself.

That being said, be HONEST. All the interviewers have been interviewing students for years, and they can tell if you're making things up to make yourself look good. Just be sincere, and tell them things that you're truly passionate about. Your excitement shows and they really love that.

I hope this helps~

Good luck to anyone who's going through the application/interview process. I hope to see you guys next year!

Ahhh getting nervous, got my interview Dec 8th. Touro-NY is my only shot right now and I leave for Australia for FOUR months Dec 29th. Nothing would be worse than to leave with a rejection lol so Im praying to some kind of god i get lucky

Good luck to rest🙂

Hey guys, I was just wondering how long you waited after mailing in your secondary app. I sent my secondary app in about 2-3 weeks ago and I am so nervous because I haven't heard from them yet! 🙁

Hey I was wondering how long it took for your application to be complete? It has been about 3 weeks since I have mailed my application and I haven't heard anything from them yet.

I called up the school and they told me that since they have Jan booked for interviews, and they aren't adding dates until later we may not hear back for interviews for a couple weeks. Our interview dates will most likely be in Feb. You can try calling and get more info, but that's what I heard last.

honestly i dont know. i dont keep track of dates. all i know is that i sent my application maybe one or two weeks before they asked me to interview. but my passport photo came late and made it in on the wednesday or thursday. then i got asked to interview on friday. perhaps it was fast because they had time to review my application before the photo came in.

2 weeks till interview! Im less nervous now that I have one at Western. Upon comparing the two, I have realized that Touro sounds a lot more chill than I thought. I didnt realize how intense other schools were in interviews (I read SDN feedback on Westerns interviews). It makes me more excited to interview at Touro knowing that they actually just wanna get to know me and not play drill sergeant. Keep that in mind upcoming interviewees🙂

this was actually my most "drill sergeant" like interview. not conversational at all, straight to the point, direct questions, fired one after another.

Really? Dam that sucks. Most feedback I read on SDN of previous interviewees was that it was relaxed and non drill sergeant style. Well I guess it will depend than on who interviews me.

With you saying that, I will now switch my interview preparation goals to expecting drill sergeant just in case lol and if I do get a super chill panel, than i will be over prepared (if that makes sense, without sounding cocky)

Just make sure you know the key points of your essays in case they ask. Remember, it is open file this year!

anyone else interviewing dec 1? its coming up. sooooo excited!

hey guys

I'm about to mail my secondary application but I came across the following regarding the 200.00$ money order:

"The $200.00 application fee, in the form of a check or money order, should be made payable to Touro College. Please note your AACOMAS ID number and list D.O Program on the face of the check."

what does the bolded and underlined mean?? does my banker have to do something?

let me know thanks

Just make sure you include your AACOMAS ID and write "DO Program" on the check. I wrote it on the "For:_____" line of my check.

My application never made it to TOURO and I've called them for about a month and the representative always told me I will email you when we get it, but I only spoke to him twice (2 weeks after i sent my app and 1 month after) Finally I called one more time to speak to someone and they told me they never received my application...

What do I do since I sent in teh 200 dollar check...

The man told me he would email me at 4 yesterday regarding if he found my app or not...no email...

This is very frustrating. please help!

On 11-5: "47 Acceptances have gone out. Out of the first 21 was got about a 47% return. Plus we already have students that deferred from last year."

Thats from Obed's Facebook. So keep up the good work guys, don't be discouraged!! It's still early!!

Does anyone know if there has been an update to these numbers? (Can anyone gain access to that facebook page or is it just current students?)

I spoke to admissions today and they said they are not scheduling more interviews yet since they are already booked through January, and that it may be a few weeks before they send out more invites.

Anyone heard any news lately?

It took them two months to cash my check, and I still haven't heard anything from them (I sent in my secondary over three months ago). 🙄

I also sent an email to the school about my status, and they never replied. The school appears to be very unprofessional, and I am so thankful I have acceptances else where.

My name is leila. What is your name? I remember two tall guys with dark hair. Are you going to go in the fall? or do you have other school you are considering?

I will be going in the fall, actually. There were 5 girls that day- one sitting to Obed's right, one at the other head of the table(I was to the right of this girl), and 3 to Obed's left. Were you sitting immediately to Obed's left? Will you be attending? I'm Sammy, by the way.

It's Harlem. 125 st is hopping! You can easily jump on the train and reach just about anywhere in the city (except SI) within 45 minutes. That said, don't get caught up in needing to live in Manhattan. I live in BK and it takes me 45-60 minutes, door to door (walking, waiting, train, etc) to get to Touro. And my neighborhood is a lot nicer, cheaper, has a much better selection of food, safer and quieter than living in Harlem. And the train ride is easy. While all the newbie (and about-to-be) New Yorkers will focus on the areas around the school and other places in the over-priced island of Manhattan, go maverick and explore the other (more interesting) boroughs that make NYC the diverse playground that it is. Seriously, don't get caught up in the Manhattan thing. Highly overrated and definitely overpriced.

Brooklyn baby!

Yes thats me. I def remember you now. congrats on your acceptance. I am most likely attending, Im currently trying to decide between two schools but theres a 80 percent chance ill be going to touro. Hope to see u in the fall 🙂 btw do u know where you are going to live and all that good stuff?

Hi all. I'm interested in Touro COM and wanted to get some feedback in regards to my situation.

I am currently a post-bacc premedical student at La Salle University in Philadelphia. I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at the George Washington University with a GPA of 2.8. After deciding to pursue a career in medicine, I retook several of my lowest undergraduate grades. Having never taken any premedical Science courses as an undergraduate, my Science GPA should be approximately 3.8 after completion of the program. However, my cumulative GPA will be approximately 3.3 with repeated coursework. In terms of extracurricular activities, I have a good deal of shadowing experience and have gained a lot of direct patient contact through a previous job as an ER scribe. I also play sports and am a musician. I have not yet taken the MCAT. I'm also a NY resident.

I'm interested in knowing where I stand as far as applicants go. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I already live in Jersey, about an hour commute from the school, and Ill be staying there. But if you need any help apartment shopping or anything like that, lemme know- ive lived in the NY/NJ area all my life and can give you the inside scoop on just abt anything.

Washington Heights may be an area to look at if you are on a budget...I live there right now, its not the nicest area by any means but you can find larger places for ~$750.

It's about 10 minutes away from Touro by subway as well.

Can't really tell you until you take the MCATS. Score 27+, apply early, and I think you've got a shot. Also for Touro, having experience or at least the desire to work in the underserved community matters.

I currently have about a 3.4 overall and 3.3 science gpa; adequate reseach and volunteer hours. I have submitted my aplication the 1st week of dec. The problem is I am taking january 2011 mcat, and turo says they cannot give me an interveiw until they recieve my mcats cores. I am very concerned that the class will get filled quickly!! 🙁 Do I have a reasonable chance of getting in since they wont be reciving my scores until febuary?

Did anyone else fine they got drilled during interview? Mine started out with "so you have never been to New York...how do u know you want to live here?" Me: spit off a decent answer. Them: "ok well its not like it is in the movies" me thinking "uhh no ****"

Followed by drilling me with ethical questions. I was not impressed what so ever, I got a bad impression of their faculty this way. At the end when they asked "so do you have anything you would like to tell us", I finally got to explain why medicine, why osteopathic medicine, and why harlem.

Hope everyone elses interview went better than mine. I know for sure my other interview showed A)They cared more about getting to know me as a person and B) I wasnt drilled back to back with ethical questions🙁

Sorry to hear that it was so rough. I was interviewed by 2 wonderful faculty members who did not ask any file-related questions at all. They basically opened with a "tell us about yourself" kind of question and built off of that for the rest of the interview. It was quite the opposite of your experience, so I do sympathize with how rough you had it. I had a similar experience in my interview at LECOM-Bradenton. Everyone else seemed to get paired with what seemed to be very warm, friendly faculty members, but I got drilled and my two interviewers there did not crack a smile. It wasn't even good cop-bad cop, they both just absolutely drilled me on my file. So I know where you are coming from.

Anyways, good luck to you and I hope that you are accepted regardless!

Just so you know, when I interviewed I got drilled as well. I try to warn people on these boards that may happen at Touro. However, I think they do that just to see how you will respond, whether you can keep your composure. I think that tells them more about you than hearing cookie-cutter responses about why medicine (I'm not saying that you did have cookie-cutter responses, I'm just saying that may be their philosophy).

I hope that is the case🙂 I guess I will find out in just over a week. It took about 2 weeks to get an answer right?

Does anyone remember from the interview day what the students/faculty said about the classes?

If i recall correctly, each lecture is videotaped /recorded and put online...and that it was good in the sense that the lectures were consistently put up.

I've heard with other schools (Nova) that not all the lectures are recorded and that they are sometimes not put up.

If any current students or people who interviewed can confirm or deny, that would be great!

Ayo. Second year here.

All lectures are recorded and put online. They can be accessed after 5PM for streaming. Recently, they changed it so you can download the lectures as long as you download them on campus. This is helpful because you can stream it at 1.6x the speed, which is pretty awesome because a 55min lecture just became thirty-something.

Also, my first year all the lectures were scribed. Everything the teacher said was typed out and available to download online. So you had the original lecture, scribes, and streaming. Pretty awesome. Oh and some students record the audio. So that floats around.

As far as the scribes, our year doesn't do this anymore. I'm not sure if the first years do. I think they do, don't quote me.

Hope that helps.

Overall, I'm very happy with the school. If anyone has any questions PM me or ask it here. I check this thread here and there.

Does anyone know how full the 2015 class is to date? tons of acceptances have been going out.
