Does your state of residency affect your application here? I figured since it's private it shouldn't matter. Anyone know?

I think a lot of medschool in general are private! I've always had the assumption that most schools prefer their own people, but some put more influence on that than others. I don't think Touro puts too much influence on that however.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't affect your application at all. We don't have a lot of students from NV in our class. Lots from Cali and Utah, but we are spread from all over.

I have an interview coming up and I am from Florida! Just sporadically follow your application status and express your interest towards the school.

how many people are there per interview day?

it seems like there is a 2 hour block for interviews so since each interview should be 30 min long..

Is it only 4 people for one day?

There were 16 at my interview day. They have 4 students being interviewed at any given time by two faculty members.

Does anyone know what percentage of applicants interviewed get accepted?

Also- For the current TUNCOM med students: do you like it there and do you think there is any bias against DO's experienced by third and fourth years at the Las Vegas hospital's and clinics?

I believe there were somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 applicants last year, and the class is 135 students. That number doesn't include those who turned down acceptances, of course, but I believe there were not nearly as many students declining admission as in previous years. I would imagine you could find the exact numbers in the CIB.

Yes, love it here. Have not heard of any bias against DOs in the area hospitals. I have heard lots of positive things about 3rd and 4th year rotations.

I always like to hear that! It sounds like NV is so underserved the hospitals are practically begging for help. I can't imagine that would hurt your rotations at all. This is one of my biggest reasons for wanting to attend Touro-NV.

melissaliss, how do you feel the daily schedule is in terms of allowing you time outside of class to study? It sounds like a 8AM to 5PM schedule every day doesn't allow much time to study outside of class for those of us who don't want to live, eat, and breath medical school for every waking hour. How do you feel your class is adjusting to those time demands?

Thanks for the info! I know that many UNR students do their rotations in Las Vegas as well so that is kind of why I was curious. Also this may be a silly question but -what is the CIB??
Thanks!

Hi all..

I am a 3rd year at TUNV. If you have any questions about year 3, I'd be happy to answer them. Just PM me and I'll get back to you as my schedule allows 🙂.

Good luck with your apps!

I don't know what the percentage is, sorry. But I will say that I LOVE it here at Touro. I'm a 1st year right now, and I think most (if not all) the students in our class like the school. I'm definitely glad I made the decision to come here 🙂 As for bias, I would assume that for the most part there isn't any, although I can't say for sure since I haven't experienced rotations yet. But from my understanding, since Las Vegas is a medically underserved area, the sites are extremely grateful for our students' help.

8 to 5 most days can be pretty rough, but remember that class time is studying time (when you pay attention, that is 😉). At first, it was pretty frustrating to get home, eat some dinner, and realize I don't really have that much time to study. But you adjust and learn how to cut down your study time. Plus, you have all weekend to do stuff. It's really not that bad. I have plenty of time for other activities like going out with friends, working out, and volunteering through clubs. Some weeks are worse than others (this week kind of), and you learn to manage your time between class, studying, and free time. I'd say there are still some people in our class who are putting all their non-class time into studying, but I don't really think that is necessary... You can do that if you like, but I would imagine that those people are going to get burnt out pretty quick. Just make time for yourself and friends and you will not feel like you are studying all the time 🙂 For example, I usually do no studying on either Friday or Saturday night. And I am almost always in bed by midnight on weeknights, often by 11. Some later nights. Sleep is important too! oh and p.s. - despite all this, my grades are not suffering.

Block week however - expect to live, eat, and breathe medical school... for the most part. Until the end of the week when you can go let loose with all your fellow classmates on the nearby strip 👍 Or if you don't want to do that, you can just RELAX AND DO NOTHING! which is also great

Nice! Thanks for the review! Having the strip as an outlet sounds like it can be dangerous... haha.

Yes, thanks Desert Storm!

Mighty Moose -I was born in Las Vegas and I will say it takes some self discipline especially if you are not used to an "anything goes 24 hours a day" lifestyle. But there is only so much partying a body can handle! Plus -it is not worth trading your grades for hangovers. That being said LV is so much fun and the diversity is awesome!

Got an interview invite today! November 15th, hope to see some of you there.

I know it's last minute, but I just wanted to let everyone know the 10/18/2010 interview date is now open. I just withdrew my application. Good luck to all those interviewing! TouroNV def sounds like a great school

Sweet! See you there, Ill be wearing red and blue striped tie, with my lucky cufflinks....I know its weird.
Dose anybody know if spouses are invited?

I wouldn't bring your spouse along. Nobody had a guest with them at my interview. There is a special day where they are invited to come tour the campus and there is even a chance for them to sign up for the gym later on.

I don't see their interview-acceptance numbers listed anywhere, but...I do believe they interview around 20 people per week (on Mondays, 10 ppl in morning, 10 ppl in the afternoon). That is similar to most other schools...and most other schools interview around 500-600 students. So, I would guess that they interview around 500-600 as well.

Their class size is 135...so they must accept around 260. So 260 out of 500-600 would be my random guess.

Actually, Oscar, the director of admissions, told me they had a few thousand applications last year. Not sure how many of those were interviewed. And Fewer than 260 were accepted, I would probably say 200 max, because very few students were pulled from the wait list during the summer (like 15).

I know, I remember. Argh wat a year.

On the bright side, we were in the top 15??

I will be calling the office tomorrow to cancel my Nov. 9th interview. Just a heads up for people who would like this date. Good luck everybody!

Lol, you're welcome. Having the strip nearby really isn't that bad of a temptation, unless you really love gambling, I guess, since you don't even have to go far from school to be at a casino. Luckily I'm not much of a gambler, seeing my money dwindle away really stresses me out lol. But if you find a nice place to live near school in Henderson, you will find that most of the time you forget that the strip is so close!

nfsonpowday is right - it's not worth risking your grades over (and if you're like me and from someplace more humid, you'll find the hangovers to be worse here, at least at first!). You'll find a balance between fun and studying. But there's definitely lots of stuff to do here - lots of stuff I still want to check out when I get the chance.

Doesn't look like anyone has heard back yet from admissions about acceptances, good luck to everyone waiting :luck:

It's crunch time!

The waiting :scared:

I was hoping people from CA would have heard today, that way I would know that maybe I'd receive my letter tomorrow (since i live in OH).

I'm dying with this waiting! I just hope to hear good news :/ goodluck everyone!!

What do you mean its crunch time? When did you interview?

I thought Oscar (the admissions director... the nice young fellow who was our host on interview day) said that the admissions committee would send the letters out October 28th.

So, crunch time would begin on October 29th for those close to Nevada. For those far away from Nevada, they might not receive the letters until after Halloween weekend.

Oscar told my interview group that they were meeting to decide last Thursday, and the latest the letters would go out were this Tuesday (yesterday). And he said if we hadn't gotten anything by the 5th of November to call. But I've heard multiple things. When did you interview? I was October 18th. Maybe the sooner it got to the date, the better idea they had on when they would be sending them out.

I hope it's within the next few days!

Wow, I am pretty sure they said they would meet this Thursday (Oct 28).... and the letters should be mailed out the same day.... If that is not the case then I am in big trouble because they would of received my thank you letter fairly recently and I interviewed the 18 th!

Interviewed: Tuesday, September 28, 2010
ADCOM meeting: Thursday, October 21, 2010
Decisions made: Thursday, October 28, 2010
At the latest (email Oscar): Friday, November 5, 2010

He stressed the point that he wants you to email him if you have not heard from the admissions committee by November 5th.

I find that the best way to wait for this decision is to get out of the house and see some comedy with friends.

So I was on the accepted waitlist last year and mailed them my supplementary early October this year. I wonder if they'll even interview me this year. I haven't heard a word from the school and I already have an interview invite at another place.

Just received my official interview invite today!!!

Was able to get a very early interview (Nov 9th). That is only 12 days from now.

Can't wait, this will be the first interview I attend.

Does anyone know what percentage of those that are interviewed end up being accepted?

Anyone else interviewing there Nov 9th?

Hey! Good luck with your interview. I have no idea what the percentage is but that info is kinda useless in my opinion. Try not to focus on statistics like that, they're a distraction. They chose you for an interview because they think you have what it takes; not because your number randomly came up.

Congrats on earning an interview! Let us know how it goes :luck:

Hey melissaliss, how are classes going? How is Vegas life? I called them and my application was received but it won't be reviewed until 2-3 weeks from now.

FYI, I received snail mail today. Post marked 10/29. I live in Las Vegas. Accepted 🙂.

I wish they would e-mail your status instead of snail mail as I'm in rural Illinois. I don't wanna wait until the end of the week to hear......

cbrons, I live in a small city in ohio... and my parents constantly send me stuff from Southern California via USPS and I receive it usually within 2 days (3 days max).. So lets hope we get our response by tomorrow!!

I just got a voicemail from them, telling me of the acceptance. I think I interviewed with you cbrons. I'm OOS

Did you call them to inquire about your status and they returned your call or did they call on their own?

Called on their own. To think, I was just sitting here, minding my own business, and twiddling my thumbs, and they have to call and put a smile on my face 🙂
