Anyone else planning on applying to Tufts? I'll be an OOS first time applicant here, but its the closest thing I have to an in-state school (I'm from RI) 🙂

Me! I’m instate and applied last year. Got waitlisted for interviews but unfortunately never got called up. Time for round two!

Ahhhh so exciting!😍 I'll be starting school at Tufts in the fall, so feel free to ask me any questions about the application/interview process!

1st time OOS applicant... I love New England and conservation medicine so Tufts is among my top choices!

I got my supplemental application email today!

EDIT: In the midst of all the craziness of my life i accidentally wrote application instead of fee

I'm not sure what this would be, unless something changed since I applied a few years ago...

As far as I know, the supplemental app is contained within VMCAS and gets submitted along with VMCAS. There is an email with a link to pay a fee afterwards, but that's not a separate part of the application.

Caveat that it may be different from when I applied, but I just checked the admissions website for instructions and it looks the same.

Yeah I got an email yesterday from them to just pay the fee! The supplemental questions were all on VMCAS.

Good luck to everyone applying! If anyone has any questions about interviews, admissions process, etc. feel free to reach out!

Off topic a bit. But does anyone know how much if any time vet students are required to spend on the main Tufts campus in Medford?

As far as I know only the DVM/MPH have to take classes at the Medford campus.

Zero, unless you're in the MPH program. If you do that, it's every Tuesday afternoon in your first year from about 1pm-6pm, afaik. And that's not in Medford, that's at the medical school in Boston, I believe.

(I can ask one of my classmates if you're really interested in details)

I’m interested in not having to go near Boston, sounds like regular DVM students don’t have to go to Boston or Medford, that is great news thanks for posting it.

Does anyone know how Tufts communicates with us? Is there a portal or will they email us, if there is a portal what is the address?

Last year they emailed me, and also emailed me to check my portal.

When should we expect to hear about possible interviews?

Last year they sent the first batch of invites out on November 27th and they went out in waves from then-on. They have multiple interview days and it sounds like those that are nearby are notified/interviewed first.

Thanks! I live in NY so I'm glad that even if I don't hear back in Nov I shouldn't worry too much.

As long as they are doing it the same way this year as in previous years, there is usually only one early round of interviews in December. The vast majority of interviews take place after January 1st!

Did everyone just get that email? Finally things are starting to feel real!

So they only had a little over 800 applicants? Or is that a number they always say? If it’s only 800ish, it went down from last year!

can someone post the email please!

Dear EngrSC,

Greetings from Tufts University!

Thank you for your application for admission to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. We look forward to getting to know you!

We received over 800 applications for the 100 seats in the Class of 2024. This year’s Admissions Committee is composed of twenty members, including two students, and they have the challenge ahead of selecting a class from this talented and accomplished applicant pool.

Over the last few weeks and continuing through the next few weeks, we are checking to be sure that you have fulfilled our prerequisite course requirements and that your letters of evaluation meet Tufts' specifications. If we have any questions, Patty Finger, our admissions coordinator, will email you for clarification.

The admissions committee’s first task is to select applicants who will be invited to interview. These interviews are tentatively scheduled for December 16, 2019, January 21and 28, 2020, and February 3, 4, and 11, 2020. If you are selected to interview, you will receive an invitation a few weeks in advance which will include the specific date and time of your interview. These interview invitations will arrive via email.

You will also receive an important email from our financial aid office soon. Please note that the financial aid application deadline is Tuesday, February 18, 2020, for consideration for Tufts financial aid. All required financial documents must be postmarked by this date in order to be considered for financial aid. You should begin the process upon receipt of the financial aid application instructions, since there are many intervening steps before your application is considered complete.

The U.S. veterinary schools have agreed upon a common reply date of April 15, 2020. If you are admitted to more than one veterinary school, you will have until April 15 to notify each school of your decision to attend. Our February 18 financial aid deadline will allow us time to provide your financial aid award before you need to respond to us and other schools by April 15. This should help you to make an informed decision about attending Tufts.

Please feel free to call our office at (508) 839-7920 if you have any questions. On behalf of the Admissions Committee, we wish you the best in this year’s application process.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Russo

Do they do rounds or all at once?

They send it in rounds for each interview. They said a few weeks before each date. Also, to the above message about how they decide who to invite, from all the thread stalking I've done, they usually give the first interview to applicants that they really want that they think might decline for their IS or a different option. That way they have time to send out more invites for later dates!

Congrats to everyone who has gotten interview invites so far!! I didn't get my interview invite until early January last year so don't panic if you haven't heard anything yet🙂

How many interview invites are usually sent out in total?

I was wondering if you’d be able to give advice on how to dress for the interview? I’m female, so would they require skirts, or are dress slacks acceptable? Thank you for your help

Pants are fine

It's pretty relaxed in comparison to some other interviews. That's not to say you shouldn't prepare or try to look nice, but don't sweat the small stuff.

It's also perfectly acceptable to bring a change of clothes for the presentations/tour part. I wore fleece lined pants, a sweater, and snow boots for that portion, and was extremely glad I did because it was absolutely freezing outside that day. At least don't wear heels on the tour -- it's harder to get close to the sheep if you're in fancy shoes 😉

^^I second everything said above! For my interview I wore a blazer with dress pants. During my tour, I basically wore thermal leggings, a sweatshirt, and snow boots because it was right after a snowstorm so everything was covered in snow, so wear whatever is comfortable for you for that part!

Got the interview invite for 12/16, OOS technically but I'm from MA. SO EXCITE (and please believe I'll be in Uggs and my down puffer coat once the interview is over lol)

Thank you for the tips! I've grown up & lived in California only.. so just reading about "snow boots" is making me burrr 😱. I guess I'll have some shopping to do. Do we spend a lot of time outside during the tour? I'm writing this as I'm shopping for rechargeable hand warmers on Amazon 😵.

Decent amount of time outside, but unless you get lost over by the wildlife clinic I doubt you'll need rechargable/electronic outerwear

I say this as born new englander but also ex-California resident who used to ("used to" lololol still do) turn my car heat seat on if it dropped below 72.

ymmv

When I hike in the winter I wear something warm (fleece or hoodie) topped with something windproof (raincoat or windbreaker) and the combo is pretty good. Plus some kind of gloves, or hands can get chapped. You will take your gloves off to use your phone, and you will be cold, and that's life haha XD Any old scarf can go over your head, wrap under your chin, and tuck into your coat. As for footwear, it gets yucky with the half-melted snow and all the crud they put down to make it less slippery. So rain boots or hiking boots will be fine, or just old sneakers even. From the email I got the impression they understand that a good outfit for interviewing is not a good outfit for a campus tour so folks will be changing.

How many interview invites are usually sent out in total?

I believe two years ago they conducted around 400 interviews (out of a ~1,000 applicant pool) for a 100 person class size. If the applicant pool is lower this year, I would expect less!
