Tufts University c/o 2024

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For the record, I also got my interview in January! The majority of people interview in January, so don't feel down if you didn't get the December interview!
Congratsss!!!!!
In State or OOS? Mind sharing your stats?

I'm currently a 2nd year at Tufts, so this was a few application cycles ago! I'm OOS (barely-live like 2 minutes from MA). My Undergrad GPA was 3.95, GRE was 309 (a little low for Tufts standards), and I had about 1,100 vet hours and only like 300ish animal hours. I had a lot of varied small animal experience from international trips, working at a hospital (majority of the small animal hours I got), shadowing at a specialty clinic, and volunteering at an animal shelter. I also had large animal hours from various barn classes at my undergrad and from working extensively with alpacas, llamas, and donkeys! I also had a good amount of research experience and some non-vet related work experience.

When will tufts email us about rejections? Tufts was my reach school so I’m not really expecting anything to be honest.

I'm not entirely positive so someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's late -- like not until February or March.

You can probably check the threads from previous years to see when people started to get notified.

Based on last year's forum, their last interview date was early Feb so I'm guessing we'll know if we don't hear from them by Feb about interviewing.

my bad, I misread your first comment haha! If a GRE of 309 is considered low, then I expect a rejection from Tufts lol!
Good luck to everyone!!

The class stats for GRE averages for Tufts was around 320 when I first applied. It was 316 for my class and the 2023 class. Tufts definitely puts some emphasis on the GRE, which was super scary for me. I was in contact with admissions and asked for their advice when I got a 309 when I took the GRE the first time. They told me that was lower than their average and it would be hard to accept that compared to someone else with a higher score. I retook the GRE and got the same exact score (of course) but applied anyway because it was my dream school. Clearly I still got accepted so don't lose hope! It all depends on the applicant pool and what the rest of your app looks like!

anyone have any idea how tufts would view a candidate with higher than average GREs but lower than average GPA? Ie could my high GRE make up at all for my subpar GPA?

My GPA was below the average and I had a high GRE score. Definitely think it helped but I also had a lot of experience too.

Hi! I was wondering if any current students have advice about the interviews? Are the questions more general ("tell me about yourself") or specific ("tell me about your experience at Such-and-Such Animal Hospital")? Thank you so much!!! 😊 😊 😊

You'll find some good advice in past threads, but overall:

Tufts seems to be a pretty relaxed interview compared to some schools. "Relaxed" ≠ "don't prepare." Tbh it's a bit difficult to give advice about general vs. specific questions, because it probably varies between interviewers and I wouldn't want to lead anyone astray, but...

It was clear that my interviewers had read my application and my personal statement. I would be prepared to discuss your experiences as well as your primary motivators for going to vet school (i.e. make sure you have an answer to "what brings you here to today to interview?" that doesn't just include "I have always wanted to be a vet and so now I am applying to all the schools because my pre-vet advisor told me that's what I should do at this life juncture.").

In general, demonstrate genuine enthusiasm, curiosity, and strong communication skills. Smile, be yourself... all that good stuff.

Oh and in case it helps: typically the interview structure is 2 faculty members who do a single joint interview. The admissions office seems to try to pair each applicant up with faculty members with whom you share common interests/experiences.

Across the board, the interviewers (and the faculty in general) are pretty friendly, interesting, and approachable.

Agree with everything said already! Wanted to add that when you get your assignment for interviewers, they also give you an info sheet on both of them. Read it through so you are familiar with who you are interviewing with, and maybe come up with a question for each interviewer about their work! It helped keep my interview flowing and they liked answering questions about their work that I found interesting. Of course, have questions prepared about the program at Tufts when they ask you at the end, too. Overall mine was also very laid back, which was great because I was the VERY last interview of the day, which was painful for me to have to stress throughout all of the daily activities!!

I think I remember being asked pretty basic questions...tell me about yourself, why vet med, tell me about a time this/that, handling stress, etc. The interviewers are super nice and reassuring. One of my questions that threw me off a little bit initially was what would you do if your friend in vet school confided in you about wanting to commit suicide due to the stress. Important question with the suicide rate being so high, but I wasn't really expecting it so straight forward!

It's a lot less structured than say a behavior interview or an MMI. Tufts was my favorite interview. The interviewers were really nice and they know you are nervous. Try to be yourself. They'll likely ask you specific things about your application and give you the chance to talk more in depth about your experiences, but they could also ask you general questions about how you plan to handle the workload, why you want to be a veterinarian, etc. . I think it depends on the individual interview and where the conversation goes.

I ended up going on a tangent about something a specific experience and they asked me a lot of follow up questions about it and it took up most of my interview time. I think that's why I really enjoyed the interview because I got to talk about some things I've done that I was really passionate about.

Hey guys, I'm new to this whole forum thing and decided to finally make an account after doing some late night stalking of what things have been like for past application cycles lol. I'm a first time applicant, OOS for tufts and got an invite for the 12/16 interview. Hope everyone's other schools are going well so far ! got a couple other interviews but still waiting to hear back from my top choices, it's the final stretch we all got this !

I'm OOS and Tufts is my number one choice. So impossibly scared I haven't heard anything yet. But totally congrats to everyone that has heard!!

I interviewed on December 16, and when I was securing my spot I saw there were 6 additional interview dates listed—3 in January and 3 in February. Plus, all of the current students I talked to weren’t invited to interview until January. I’m sure you’ll hear from them very soon!

Just received an OOS interview invite! Probably going to turn it down

Edited to add: the above was not meant to sound elitist! I’ve been accepted to 2 cheaper options so I just can’t justify the cost of tuition.

Hi! My application was placed on hold, which I assume to mean an interview waitlist. Does anyone know more information about this, or have any advice on how to get off this list?

There will be a lot of movement with interviews and waitlist. I don't know specifically for you but you could inquire of admissions if you wanted. I don't usually consider "hold" synonymous with "waitlist" but not sure honestly. If the interview invites are going out in waves then it could be.

Sorry for all the speculation on my part.

IS interview for January 22! Tufts is my top choice (close to home) so I’m very excited! Congrats to everyone else! And good luck to those on the waitlist (that was me last year- didn’t work out then but things are better this year so don’t give up!)

Congrats all on the interview!
I've not received anything yet. Can I safely assume I am still under consideration or would rejections have been sent out by now?

Does anyone know the stats on how many students interview and how many they accept? I know their class size is ~100 but a lot of schools send out more acceptances than spots they have.

Congratulations everyone! I haven’t heard anything yet either!

I don't have recent since I've been graduated stats but quite a few interview, class size is still around ~100. Some people will decline their interview, some will decline their accepted spot. Can only go to one school. So there will be a LOT of movement. Don't despair 🙂

Hi all! I was just wondering if anyone knows if it appropriate to bring along a partner or friend to the interview date. In the email it said they are welcome but I want to know if this is normal?

Last year they supposedly interviewed 400 and our final class was 100.
