UC Davis c/o 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Who is left to interview?

I'm getting anxious for decisions to go out. I just found out that someone is holding the world's BEST apartment for me, in Dixon, until I hear whether I got in or not. It's amazing and I'd be able to see my horse from my kitchen window. 😍 Rent is substantially cheaper and I can pay my board by feeding in the mornings before class. PERFECT!!

Now, if only I can just get accepted...👍

I'm also considering dixon/woodland and commuting. You get more bang for your buck I think. I agree with AHOC, I just want to KNOW already, either way. I would like to start planning, wherever I'm going.

UCD is my "last" chance besides being on WSU's waitlist - so I'm feeling a little more stressed about actually getting in. Nervous, as always!

It REALLY isn't that bad of a commute. Seriously. It's like 10 minutes down a freeway. There's no reason to live in Davis unless you want to bike to class. (which I would LOVE to do!)

I would never be on time to class if I lived in Woodland. Some people (who like mornings ie not me) like it there and it is cheaper. For me though....eh I like living in Davis. I'm close to downtown and close to campus, so that's pretty sweet.

I really love the idea of being able to bike everywhere. 😍 Especially when gas prices have gotten so high. D: I have yet to look into housing in Davis (afraid I might jinx the admission decision, aha)... what kind of range in housing prices do you tend to see? Any good sites to look at housing options?

It really depends on where you live and whether you end up in a complex or a house or somewhere in between. I find the rent cheaper than the bay, for what that's worth. They'll start a fb page after acceptances go out and there will be a thread on there with 4th years trying to unload their current places - that's how I got my place - and people looking for roommates and whatever. There are some places that are known for being more welcoming to pets, and so a lot of vet students end up in those too. The Davis Wiki has info on anything and everything in Davis, including housing reviews, food, and everything else!

Me + biking = crashing into the beautiful Davis trees

Heylodeb...pulling for you! Fingers crossed

Wish I got to see the teaching hospital and meet more students when I was there. I only saw the back of Nyanko as she was walking through Valley Hall....

I like living in Davis mostly because I never hesitate to go to school (obviously I go to class, but I mean for extra studying or events/talks, etc.). It is nice that I can hop in my car, drive 6 minutes, and be at school to study for a lab practical or whatnot. Although, since there is NO traffic here in my experience, living farther away may not be much of an issue when it comes to stopping by school to study, staying late for a dinner talk, etc.

For housing, if you are interested in living with a vet student (someone from your class or the other classes), there will be TONS of options emailed around once the class of 2015 is selected. Prices are around $1,000 for a single/studio/one bedroom. If you live in a nice complex with one other person in a 2bed/2bath, it'll be around $600-700 per month. Living in houses with more people may be cheaper. I'd say a realistic range is $500-$700 in Davis.

http://daviswiki.org/Apartments

davis wiki will be your best friend it has everything about davis.

i've lived in davis for 6 years and my favorite area was north davis, that said the closer you are to a good bus line the way more rent will be. North and south davis tend to be the most expensive and filled with the most students, but the closest to shopping and best bus lines (unfortunately for the vet school there is no direct bus line)

happy wondering, hopefully this will not be a jinx as well

Many, if not most, vet students actually seem to live in West Davis. That area has the reputation of being quieter and more filled with grad students than undergrads. I love living in West Davis and wouldn't really consider any other location, but that's just me.

For those who do get accepted (hopefully all of you!), let me just say that you should NOT feel too rushed to find a place. The majority of rentals in Davis follow the Davis Model Lease, which runs from Sept 1-Aug 31, but the apartment complexes start advertising their fall openings in February. It's absolutely insane!! But unless you really want to live in an apartment complex, I wouldn't worry too much about being behind the curve. Even if you DO want to be in a complex, they definitely still have openings throughout the summer.

When I got in, I had the impression that every place in Davis would be gone and I had to pick the first semi-reasonable place I found - in early April! I wound up getting a place that was a really bad fit for me, one that I never would have chosen if I'd given myself a little more time to look around and do some research. If you're looking for a duplex or condo, or even a privately-owned house (not managed by a rental company), you will find that there are plenty being advertised throughout the spring and summer on Craigslist, the Davis Enterprise, and Davis CHL. Many individual landlords don't even advertise until about 1-2 months before vacancy (like any other normal city!). The whole college town/model lease thing has really screwed up the timing of rentals here, in my opinion, but if you don't put in a deposit on a place in March there will still be plenty of options for you, so don't let it freak you out.

I hope that helps some of you! It's something I wish I'd known a year ago 😳

And speaking to what moosenanny said, I hate noise and I hate undergrads, and I'm perfectly happy living in a house in south Davis (moved here a few months ago), which has the reputation of being undergrad-central. The specific neighborhood you're in is arguably even more important than the north/south/west distinction.

^ Thanks for that. I still feel like I'll be a little behind the curve. I'm looking for specific things in an apt. I don't want to be in a dump and feel like I'm in undergrad, I guess because I've been on my own for a few years and want to have a nice place to come home to.

I saw a place called Alhambra Apts on the davis wiki page and I'm really interested. I would really like a w/d, dishwasher, central air, and pet friendly. A lot to ask, I know!🙂 Anyone know about this complex?

Yeah, I'm in west Davis (Stonegate Village) and while this apartment complex is pretty quiet and chill, right next door is the land of the undergrads (Arlington Farm) and pretty much Thursday night through Sunday every week I find myself wishing that I had some kind of explosive device to hurl into the middle of that particular complex.

The complex that is historically very pet friendly is Stonegate. Most complexes allow only one or two pets and have restrictions, and Stonegate is pretty lax. I ended up renting from a guy with some duplexes who let me rent with three cats, and who also let me craft a sub-lease so I would have control over the roommate. Luckily, my craigslist law school roommate is amaaaaaaazing so I'll never kick her out.

Also my duplex has none of Nyanko's ****ty undergrads. Hooray for not living in a complex!

does anybody know how bad the 80 traffic is during rush hour?

does anybody know how bad the 80 traffic is during rush hour?

depends on where you are coming from. If you are coming from the Dixon area it probably won't ever be too bad. (unless there is an accident) A lot of the time it slows down a lot going east from the school during rush hour. There are a lot of frontage roads to help with those, though.

So a lot of traffic going east to Sac in the morning and west to Davis in the afternoon?

Wasn't thinking about dixon particularly, more of living in east(?) Davis.

In my experience, it's actually the opposite. I spent a summer commuting back and forth during rush hour. The slow downs seemed to be whichever way I was driving, lol! Honestly, though, it's not that big in Davis. If you are living in Davis, you will know the side streets and won't need to get on the freeway during rush hour. Maybe I have a slightly different view, but I live in Sacramento and commute 30 minutes to get ANYWHERE just within Sacto. For a matter of fact, I even kept my horse in Davis for 5 months while I lived in Sac. I don't think it matters which side of town you live on for traffic - only diffference would be the quality of the neighborhoods?? I'm sure people who are actually living in Davis right now can give you their opinions!

Thanks for the info. That is kinda strange... hmm. Well I think I'll be taking a break from obsessing about housing until I actually get accepted, haha, then regroup and start looking seriously. Fingers crossed.

The only time I've really noticed traffic sucking when coming from Sac to Davis has been on Sunday afternoons/nights, which I can only conclude has something to do with people returning from Tahoe et al. to the Bay Area after a weekend.

To put you'all minds at ease about commuting....I'm planning on commuting ONE HOUR for the first two year. :O. I know. awful. However, I will STILL save money, even if gas is $4-5/gallon compared to living in Davis. Not to mention I'm not overly enamored of the town. It's impossible to find decent housing close to campus, and west Davis is a LONG way away from the the school - at least 30-40 minute bike ride. I think I'd rather pay less to live somewhere else, commute, and bike around campus.

As far as the time used to commute....I figure that even with living in Davis, I would waste 2 hours SOMEWHERE in the day - and so I either need to be productive during those 2 hours OR use those as my only 2 hours of relaxation.

I'm realistic enough to know that I won't be able to commute every day in years 3 and 4 so will have arrangements closer to the school for those years, but until then, I'm going to try and make this work. 🙂

So yeah - I think those of you living in Woodland/Dixon will be just fine. 🙂 FWIW I had a job in Woodland as an undergrad and commuted from Davis. It wasn't bad at ALL - very doable.

To be fair - yes Davis has a bus system that's pretty good - but good luck getting on it if the weather is bad, you are sitll going to spend a lot fo time getting to school etc - so that's why I didn't mention it above.

It's impossible to find decent housing close to campus, and west Davis is a LONG way away from the the school - at least 30-40 minute bike ride.

I wouldn't say any of this is true at all. I live in West Davis, along with TONS of my classmates. As I already said, my drive is ~ 6 minutes, while my roommate and next door neighbors bike, and it takes them ~ 20 minutes (25 if they're going slowly).

ETA: My next door neighbor and fellow-first year bikes. She and I have this uncanny ability to coincidentally leave our complex at the exact same time each morning. We leave around 8:35-8:40 to make it to a 9 AM class. I just like arriving pretty early, and she's right on time.

Whaddup future Aggies!!

I'm not a vet student nor am I pre-vet, I'm a UCD graduate who is going into medicine (and happens to see this thread bouncing up all the time on SDN). I just wanted to let you all know that you are going to an incredible school in an incredible city. You will have a blast. I'm good friends with several vet students who had nothing but good things to say about the school. Even my SDN avatar came to me through the orphan kitten project!

Anyways, best of luck with your future education!

PS: for the best coffee, try Mishka's, for the best housing, try a house instead of apartment, seriously consider not bringing a car and just using zipcar + a bicycle, and make full use of the greenbelt circling the entire city. It was awesome to be able to run in the arboretum every day. Finally, check out the davis food co-op for cheap organic food.

Hi Kiddos!

Double-decker bus girl here... Just wanted to bring you a little taste of what awaits you after your acceptance, about this time of year during your freshman year you will get to study everyone's FAVORITE subject, PARASITOLOGY!

Feeling like an overachiever? Want to get ahead of the game? Check out our parasitology study guide, Wet Lab's new single "Worm Burden" featurding the Loca Lochias dance troup and with A/V support provided by our very own SDN member, justcats. PS - GOOD LUCK!!!!!:luck:

I always lived right next to or on campus and I just remember having to bike to my church that was 5 miles away. It took me 30 minutes wtih all the stop lights and stop signs and eventually I didn't go very often. Totally personal preference though! I think nothing of waking up 30 minutes early so I can go for a run, but waking up earlier to bike drives me up the wall. 🙂

I totally second the other posters comments about the greenbelt and arboretum. There are some very awesome things in Davis that I'm looking forward to being able to do on a daily basis again.

BTW - did anyone else count up the days on the 2011-2012 academic calendar and realize that the semester system has ~20 more instruction days than the quarter system 2nd years????? What the.....that's FOUR more weeks of school. I'm trying to look on the positive side and think how thorough and in-depth my education will be! 🙂

^^^you sure it's that many days? yall will start in mid August and we don't start until September, but you will also get out in May and we'll be there until June!

miss starlene: I was hoping you'd come here and post that, because I soooo wanted to share it but felt that it was better for a class of 2013er to do it. 😀

I downloaded the 2011-12 academic-administrative calendar from UCD's website. They list all the holidays for each system and total up the number of days. Maybe there's a mistake in the number of days they list for each session????? Another possibility is that finals week are included in the V1 schedule and not in the quarter schedule? For the semester system, they don't list a finals period, while in the quarters they do. It's not a huge deal, I was just curious. 🙂

First semester V1 - 86 instruction days
Second semester V1 - 96 instruction days

Fall quarter - 61 instruction days
Winter quarter - 52 instruction days
Spring quarter - 49 instruction days

You guys won't have finals weeks due to the block setup of the new curriculum. The class of 2015 will also have a VMTH clinic day every 3 weeks throughout the entire first 2 years, so even though those are definitely "instruction" they're a little different. And your contact time (lecture/lab) is going to be less than ours. 😉

The other thing is that for the vet school, our Fall quarter is actually longer than the campus's Fall quarter. Traditionally, the first year students have started at the very beginning of September (last year we started September 1st), with the second/third years beginning a week later or so, and Fall quarter doesn't actually begin for the rest of of campus until the end of September. It causes all kinds of stupid issues with things like the ARC and getting student IDs and stuff.

Where do you guys find time to make these videos? Class of '13 seems to have some pretty quirky, weird, talented (?) people with an interesting sense of humor.

Also: 10 days and counting til acceptances start going out!

That makes total sense - thanks for explaining, I knew I had to be missing something! The mroe I learn about the new system the more excited I'm getting I must admit!

I did wonder about how I would be impacted by being on a different system than the rest of the campus - ie the student ID card thing. Should be interesting.

(assuming I get in...... :xf:) I'm looking forward to having access to the ARC again (yeah a gym)...and the arboretum for running...and quitting my job.....(although that's going to happen no matter what!)

Yeah, it was fun last year trying to go to an outside urgent care place on a Saturday before the school had given us insurance cards or anything (going to the health center wasn't a big deal). When I had to go to an ER the next day, I just gave them my old insurance and hoped it would still work (it did).

Haha yeah, Greg bullied me into it. Typical! Thanks for all your Symposium help, btw.

Are there any UCD pre-vet undergrads on here who will be around during Spring Break and want to help out with our 1400 person international Vet Student Symposium?? I still have a few volunteer spots, particularly Friday March 25 and Saturday March 26. We need some people for easy shifts during the day helping out with the lunches (means you're free to roam around the rest of the time), some over-21s to help with our Tainted Love concert on Friday night, and ANYONE who knows about flag football, soccer, or basketball to help run and ref our competitions on Saturday!!!

If you're not a Davis undergrad but you're in the area and interested, hit me up too, I can probably get you a spot.

email me at [email protected] if you're interested - DON'T post here, I hardly ever check this.

Information on the Symposium can be found at http://www.savmasymposium2011.com

Sorry - Wet Labs and Day Trips are full and not available to non-vet-student volunteers.

xoxo

We are basically ******ed procrastinators who like to make really really nerdy, sometimes sexual science jokes. Oh yeah, and rap. Poorly. But V-Snare used to work as a wildlife videographer so at least we get good production quality!!

Actually our video "Vet Dreamz" got an honorable mention in the KDVS (UCD college radio station) Music Video Competition in the Hip Hop Category last spring... HOLLER

Thanks 😉 we do it all for the fans....

Hey everyone. Just got done reading the thread about deposits and it made me a bit nervous. Does anyone here remember what the deposit was for Davis last year? *Assuming* I get in, I want to know whether I have a month to come up with $500....or $2,000.... 🙂

I can't remember sending in a deposit, and I can't find a record of one in my bank account register (but maybe I paid by credit card, who knows). I CAN tell you that I got the Lenovo laptop with a few extras, like a docking station and extra power cord, which came to a total of approximately $2200 and I paid for it in mid-July. So save up that tax return!!!

Only honorable mention? WTF?

awwww bless 🙂

the winning video was this pretty killer one-take acapella rap shot in some dude's kitchen. bare-bones production but serious skillz.

it's all good... we'll get 'em next time!

So yeah - I think those of you living in Woodland/Dixon will be just fine. 🙂 FWIW I had a job in Woodland as an undergrad and commuted from Davis. It wasn't bad at ALL - very doable.

I'd honestly rethink your hour commute idea. 2 spare hours in undergrad might have been realistic but definitely not in vet school. I commute part of the week from my boyfriends in Fair Oaks and it is a major pain and thats even on the days without any traffic and going over the causeway on the 80 OR the 5 is never reliable to not have an accident. It might seem like a great money saver but will in the end cost you study time/ and more stress even if driving may be relaxing to you.

As far as biking, I lived in West Davis my first year and took bike paths straight from my door to campus and it took me 15 minutes, at most 20 if I missed every light and to wait for cars to turn and I am a SLOW biker.

For those looking a housing: West davis is great, downtown is ok but kind of a major pain when it comes to parking at times especially if passes are limited in the house. Woodland is about 20 mins depending how far off the freeway.

It takes 5 minutes from freeway ramp to ramp to get to Dixon which is where I'll likely be living next year depending if my offer to buy a house gets accepted (that or woodland)

Davis doesn't have a deposit.

Really? That is awesome!

As for living situations since a lot of people have brought it up, I went to undergrad at Davis, and for a while considered moving to Woodland or Sacramento to save money on rent, but when I considered my savings-- only a couple hundred bucks max-- and the fact that I would then HAVE to drive and get a yearly parking permit which breaks down to about $40-50 per month, plus gas which if I was conservative and only had to gas up 1.5 times per week would cost by today's gas prices ($4/gal) about $400 a month plus the wear on my car, I no longer found I would be saving money.

For those of you unfamiliar with the area, I, like a lot of the posters here, I love the convenience of being able to bike to campus when the weather is nice and only have to buy a permit when it gets really rainy(note people mentioned the bus system, but last I heard the grad students voted to keep access to the arc(school gym) instead of buses or a fee increase a couple years ago, so I don't think the bus system is free for vet students- but I could be wrong). Your best bet financially is to live in a house with other people--also usually the most pet friendly- but not as easy to find as apartments, because they are often rented privately.

Thought I would share my two cents, especially for the lurkers.

Down to 7 more days!! 🙂

Does anybody know how drawn out the process of sending out decision letters is gonna be? Like, does anybody really find out the last possible day?

Last year people started hearing on a Wednesday, and I got my acceptance the Monday after. Checking SDN was literally torturous for a few days, and that weekend felt like an eternity . . . However, I found out I had been accepted on the date they said they'd start sending out notifications, and the other people were just told earlier. So, to answer your question more directly, the acceptances go out over a few days, but I think they had told everyone before the last date in the proposed range of dates.

Also, don't start second-guessing what the order of notification means. They can't send emails out all at once because it crashes the server. People who were told later weren't "ranked" lower or anything. Just one of the many admissions process mysteries 🙄

To my knowledge, they said the notification period spans two weeks...which seems like an incredibly long time to let people know. Maybe I'm wrong. Or maybe they say that just to be safe and will try to get them out asap. *biting fingers*

My guess is that they give a range to be safe, but will probably tell people over a few days . . .

it says on the current applicants site that they will tell us between march 21st and 31st. let's hope they go for the early end, otherwise panicking will ensue.

So interviews are over as of 5 min ago right? I feel like we are all now walking that long walk down a 2-week long corridor to sit in front of Randy, Paula and Simon and find out our fate. We made it to Hollywood week and now its decision time. Ok so maybe all this waiting has made me delirious…. :zip:

haha - no, you are not delirious. I thought about it the SAME way!! 🙂 haha YAY - we got our ticket to hollywood. Let's hope we all sang in tune.

I'm hoping that they will let us know early like they did last year but am willing to sit out till Monday to start panicking.

SO - you first years....which one of you are camping out by the "deliberation room" to let us know when they start deciding our fates?
