UC Davis c/o 2016 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think most went on a mean drinking bender after acceptances went out and have yet to sober up. At least two are out wandering the starry desert, pondering their navels, lost in existential reflections.

Me, I am just bewildered about how I will find housing when most listing I am seeing are for summer sublets. I guess the next step is to call up some of the managing agencies and consider a road trip up north if need be. Hope you're all well... 😉

Not me! I got bit in the face by a Dachshund today! And it was totally AFTER we vaccinated him. (I'm ok, no damage done except a prick, just really stunned).

It had to happen sometime... the little ass -hat.

Go Davis!!!! And trying to find housing!

There is an apt. complex called WILLOWS that sounds nice. Seems like your cup of tea, perhaps.

Lame!

Have you seen them? I'm honestly considering it.

I have only seen pictures and emailed back and forth with them a bit. I've been pretty impressed... I would like to live with one of two other people though.

If it helps I knew a couple people living there last year I think and they loved it!!

Oh, that's good! Yeah, I think I'm going to try to participate in their room mate program 🙂 Seems like a good deal.

Hi guys,

I know some people are against facebook, but I highly recommend joining your class of 2016 page, even if it is just until school starts and then you can delete your accounts again. Last year some important announcements and reminders from the school were posted only on that page and were not sent to us via email, so keep an eye on that. Also there are a lot of posts there for people looking for roommates and there is a google doc set up and posted there for people in need of housing, and for those in need of roommates to fill housing.

As for the summer sublets keep those in mind because unfortunately Davis is a city that revolves around the majority of the University students on the quarter system and not like normal places so almost all leases begin and end September 1st, so you will need somewhere to live for at least the last two weeks in August. You guys are really lucky that September 1st falls on a Saturday so you can easily move if you have to sublet first.

If you have any other questions about housing or Davis or anything now that you are in AND CONGRATS AGAIN by the way feel free to reply here or pm me and I'll try to help you out.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been starting to think about potential living options for this fall and was wondering if anyone could dispense some wisdom about what's available and their own experience finding housing. I am leaning towards living alone for my first year, but still open to a shared property situation. Does anyone have any perspectives to offer on living in any of these areas: West Davis (seems to be the preferred destination for vet students. Been looking at the Willows, Stonegate, Lakeshore, The Grove and a couple others - would love personal anecdotes on any); how 'bout Sacramento, Woodland, Dixon, or Vacaville? Has anyone looked at housing in any of these areas? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. 😉

Living alone costs more but has been worth it for my sanity. I think it would be super annoying to see the same people at home that I see all day at school, but some people do it and are happy, so probably depends on your personality.

A bunch of vet students live in Stonegate - I like it here fine. They are one of the few places that allow >2 pets. To be honest, most of the Davis apartments are pretty comparable. It's one of those things where you eventually just shrug and pick one that has a dishwasher and allows your pets and isn't known for having tons of undergrads.

I lived in downtown last year and while the location was nice for going out, it sucked bad for driving anywhere. Davis has the worst timed stoplights of any city I've ever lived in and it was infuriating to drive anywhere because you hit Every. Single. Red. Light. It's the worst.

Congrats to those of you who have been accepted into the UC Davis Class of 2016! I'm not the most social of members here on SDN, but I figure this might be a good time to say "What's Up!?", to my fellow classmates. I may be one of the few surviving humans, under the age of 30, that does not have a Facebook, and seeing as we will all be spending a joyous 4 years together, I thought that I would say hello, here on SDN. So here it goes..." HELLO!" I'll probably be headed up to Davis fairly early this summer to get settled in, so if any of you are planning on doing the same thing....well then... lets hang out, drink many beers, and toast to the hell to come. Nice to meet you.

Hey Trying2Getin, I'll most likely be up here in Davis for part of the summer! Beers sounds like a great idea!

August West, I've went to undergrad and worked in Davis before Vet school, so it has been a while but I've lived in West, North and Central Davis, and like West Davis the most. I live in Le Tournesol apartments -- 2 or 3 bedroom townhouse style, and like the space of these apartments and the management is wonderful-- which is saying a lot in Davis, they are also very flexible about pets and the manager basically says to tell her about the first couple and then just don't mention it but keep things clean-- if it says anything the demo apartment they used last year, the girl had 3 cats, and was fostering a momma cat and 5 kittens when we walked through. They have no restrictions on dog size (my roommate had a great dane mix) or breed, but you were expected to be present or lock up dogs for any repairs. There are dishwashers if that's a big selling point, and unfortunately don't have your own w/d but have coin op on the premises which doesn't get too crowded. It's a pretty quiet complex, with mostly older students or a few families or 20-30s couples, so not bad, also has a nice pool ans spa area. Some of the apartments also decent sized yards.

There's my apartment complex plug. Otherwise I live with a Vet/grad student in a different year and it's really nice that I can run things by her and commiserate about school, but we aren't in class all day together.

And Trying2GetIn , it's not all hell

Beaglevet, are those apts relatively in biking distance of the vet school? They sound awesome!! Especially love the "tell the landlord about the first few animals".

Really nice sounds like key words for costs you an arm and a leg! At least thats what it meant in downtown LA ha!

But will definitely be checkin them out.

I think they are a tad more expensive than most other places with similar # of bedroom/bathroom but might have a little more space, too.

Thanks! I think living alone for the first year will be good for me, too, even if it means having to pay a little more. Once I get to know more of my peers and a better understanding of the area, I would definitely consider a shared housing situation. Do any of the complexes out west have a lake view? 🙂

Join facebook and be done with it. I might be headed up to Davis for a couple days over spring break (next week, I believe). I was hoping to check out some housing options early. I would also be happy to meet up with anyone that currently resides in the Los Angeles area. I know some great bars! 😎

Thanks for the info. I'll add that one to my list. Hopefully I can find a place that will be flexible leasing from August instead of September during my upcoming visit.

Do you know the costs of the available floorplans?

I live alone in Sac and love it!! I pay $200 less and have twice as much space and a washer/dryer vs. my apartment in Davis.

Plus, it's more quiet and no Thursday night parties every. single. week. But I know some complexes are much more quiet than others.

August West:

It's not that I'm against getting one, I just never made one and just kept on never making one ha. Maybe it's time I get hip with social networking though. I'd be down for meeting up with people in LA too. I'm in Studio City.

Do ever feel that commuting from Sacramento alienates or marginalizes you at all from other classmates, such as those that get together to study, or makes you schedule more difficult than it would be living in davis?

Nope, not at all. But I do realize that some people might feel that way. I still study with the same person, and it's usually after school so I'm in Davis already anyway. And on the weekends, sometimes she drives to Sac. It also helps that one of my closest friends lives in Sac as well.

I will say that I don't go out and barhop with my classmates... if you're into that scene, it's probably better to live in Davis, it'll be easier. Socially, I'm much more into hiking, potlucks, dinners with friends, etc. And I don't mind driving to Davis for those things at all.

For me, the amount of space for the price of rent was well worth it. Especially since I much prefer to live alone. If you want roommates, the difference in rent isn't as dramatic.

I'll send you a private message. We're practically neighbors. Anyone else in Los Angeles, please introduce yourselves and we'll meet up for drinks.

:horns:

Sounds reasonable. I'm soaking this info up like a sponge. Right now I am leaning towards grabbing a one (or two, if feasible) bedroom apt. at one of the complexes by Stonegate Lake. I really want a lake view, dammit!! I will probably wait to get a little more adventurous until my second year when I will have more resources to widen my horizons and will surely have pissed off most of my classmates by then. 😉

Does anyone have any info on externships? I can't seem to find anything on the webpage and I'm just wondering what's available for rotations.

I live in LA!! Or near it...

Wonderful. I think, so far, there are 4 or 5 of us in the area interested in meeting up for drinks. Possibly soon after spring break, which is all next week for me. If you think you can join us, PM me an e-mail address and I'll keep you updated. Perhaps once we coordinate a time and place, I will post an announcement on the facebook page as well to see if anyone else wants to drop by. Sounds great to me... 😀

I live near LA too but won't be home til May. Looking forward to meeting some of you!

If I am looking to buy a small house, do you think June will be a good time? When is Davis's graduation?

could you be a bit more specific?

I hope you were referring to my post.

I don't remember hearing anything about the number of rotations available. A lot of schools will advertise how many they usually sponsor and have some sort of database.
There are specific experiences that I'm interested in. Specifically, neurology, oncology, surgery, shelter medicine (like a spay/neuter rotation), and dentistry. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The in-house rotations? Those are different from externships, is why I was a bit confused by your question. To answer it - go to the VMTH's website if you are curious about a specific specialty, but I'm pretty sure that UCDavis has pretty much any small animal specialty you would want. The shelter medicine residency was literally started here, and we do have a community surgery rotation during 4th year that is spays/neuters/other primary care surgeries that are common (one of my neighbors who is a 4th year did an enucleation on that rotation, and I know people have done lipoma removal and such too...). You can also volunteer for feral cat TNR days where 4th years will get to do spays and 3rd years will get to do neuters.

Does anyone have any insights on living in/buying a home in Woodland. There seem to be lots of inexpensive homes up there for sale. 15-20 minute drive? Any caveats or suggestions? 😕

My student mentor just moved into an apt there and she said she loves it. Dont know about houses.

I'm sure you're used to 15-20 min drives. I sure am!

This is true. I would be a first time home owner, which is a bit :scared:. But the trade-off would be that I would get to throw some great parties, which sounds

Sounds fun, but this weekend I will be in San Diego, and next week I am going to Israel 😎

We can try to coordinate around everyone's schedule. After all, we still have 4 months until school. 😱😱😱
