Hi guys! Congrats to those of you who have been accepted and much luck to those of you on the wait list! :luck:

I'm a career changer and did not apply this cycle but I do have a question about Davis admissions considering it is my IS school. I hope ya'll don't mind 🙂 ... do you guys know if prerequisite courses expire after a number of years? I'm not sure if I should take physics and calculus again given I took them 7 years ago. I can't find anything about courses expiring on the Davis Vet Med website or the VMCAS college descriptor page. I sent an email last summer but never got a response. If you guys don't know then I will give them a call. Thanks!

I'm assuming you're an engineer by your name, so was I. My logic was that my math and physics courses were part of my employment and I was using them all the time, so I was obviously competent. I never asked, they never questioned it. I also had to finish up some pre-reqs and so just did the second halves of the chem courses and such and did fine, so they never questioned the old courses from 10 years earlier. YMMV, but it's probably fine.

Thanks! And your assumption is correct 🙂 I only took a Bio 100 class in UG so I'm taking more biology (obviously) and more chemistry. In UG I took a 3 semester sequence of calculus based physics, 3 semesters of calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, discrete math, yada yada yada.

When I applied in 2008, I had some prereq courses that I took in 1999. It never came up as an issue. 🙂

Nobody has a set schedule; our curriculum doesn't either. Why would you not count in "light days" or exam days to the average? That isn't much of an average then.

Alright settle down. I was trying to give the newbies an idea of what the TYPICAL day was like, not the average since that number is misleading. Most days we are in class from about 9-4, but with the occasional light day and exam day, the average is less than that.

Yeah, I agree that it's really hard to just quote an "average" number of hours, since our days vary so much. In my opinion, a long day for us is 8 hours. A short day is only a few hours. A run-of-the-mill day is maybe... 5 or 6 hours of class? Some days, our class hours are only broken up by a one-hour lunch break. Other days, we'll have a giant 3-hour gap in the middle of the day.
I really like the unpredictability of our schedule, though.

But remember - people probably won't start declining their spots until a LOT closer to the acceptance deadline!!! Since Davis now sends out their acceptances earlier in the game, the waitlisters have to wait until most of the other schools have made their decisions. 🙁

I check the portal far too often and every night before I go to bed I write down my position and how many people have accepted so far. It is kind of interesting to look back on the trends... Also, we've reached the point where >50% of the new class has accepted. :lame:


I really wish Davis had an accepted students day (for waitlist + accepted). I actually wish all schools had this so that you could meet the people who might be in your class (to help you decide where you feel you fit). During my Davis interview I didn't get to meet any current students since they were all in finals! I might have to head back out to CA in the next few months...

Yay congrats! I was wondering if it had moved any more since last week.

I had nightmares that either I would accidentally click the decline button or someone else would login as me and click decline as a joke! So I decided to just accept!

Hey guys - just wanted to jump in and say congratulations! 2nd year is crazy so I haven't been able to follow as closely. Before you know it - it'll be august and you'll be starting classes! PLEASE PLEASE enjoy your last few months - do everything you can to relax and take time for you! See you soon!
 
Could anyone talk about the clubs at Davis? How involved are people, how many clubs are you involved with, what kinds of activities do clubs do, etc.?

People are pretty involved in clubs and student government; there are a ton of different clubs.

This is a list of them: http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/students/dvm_program/student_clubs.cfm There may be a few missing from there.

Clubs mostly bring in speakers, organize rounds sessions with VMTH clinicians, have wetlabs for stuff like necropsies and ultrasound and do visits to relevant places, etc. Some clubs host CE symposia for vets/techs and some host symposia for general public, though the mechanics of that are apparently going to change next year.

There are a lot of opportunities for getting involved with different clubs and with SCAVMA. Personally I've been an officer in 3 different clubs in my time here (am co-president of one now), and have been a member of and participated in events for a couple of others. I don't think I would know anyone (save SDNers) from the other classes if it weren't for being involved with clubs so it's a good way to expand horizons, with the bonus of being able to network with various groups outside of the school if you are an officer in charge of an event that involves the general public or others in the profession.

So I'm a newbie - just joined SDN 🙂 I wanted to get a convo going for entering Davis students to discuss concerns/questions/things to be excited about/etc, not sure if we should start that out here?? Also posted on this forum just in case:

That is so far to commute every day! How long will it take you? 90 minutes each way? I can't imagine having to wake up that early...especially since it looks like we will have 8am class..

Thankfully it's not a full 90 minutes, more like 45 each way (I'm coming from Pleasant Hill so it's a direct shot on the highway) but still, not an ideal situation. I swam most of my life so I'm used to 5am workouts - hopefully 8am class won't be too terrible assuming I can leave my house around 7 and be there on time 😛
 
I guess that isn't too bad if you can cut down your cost of living by commuting? I had the option of moving into a place that is a 10 minute bike ride from campus or a nicer place that's a 25-30 min ride. I chose the nicer place because it might be good to be able to feel like I can get away from school life. There are also some good discussions about people living in Woodland/Sacramento on the c/o 2017 Facebook group, if you aren't a member yet. They are all generally pretty happy with their living situations.

Thank you! And I feel the same way about finding some reprieve in living some distance from campus (20 mins would have been ideal though).

You might have better success posting on the facebook c/o 2017 group, if you have an account. There are current students that have answered a lot of questions on there.

Yeah, I just dislike Facebook. I did ask a question on there, and by the time a few people had answered it was completely burried in housing offers and pictures of people's pets, and there was no way to find my question again without just scrolling down...and down...and down....

Plus when I go on Facebook I feel obligated to try to catch up with people, and then I am in danger of falling back into the time-void. :laugh:

Wake up, go to class, do some labs, go home, study a bit, go to bed...rinse, repeat, insert occasional exam every couple weeks....no letter grade.
 
Got the call from Dr. Sousa yesterday morning. And with a 26 MCAT. Eek.
