Hi, I’m not applying this cycle but I met with the dean of admissions in August via Zoom and he said they are still deciding between a virtual MMI or the SJT (situational judgement test). UC Davis School of Medicine did the SJT for their secondary MD applications - my mom actually just took hers - and it’s basically a personality “test,” that was also made by the creators of the MMI! If you go to the website they have a practice test and information. Hope this helps, good luck!Davis is my top choice! (I'm there for undergrad right now). Waiting to hear an update of how interviews are going to go with covid...
Thank you soooo much for this info! That makes me feel a little less uncertain about all the potential possibilities. The admissions site says they will announce a decision in September so hopefully that will come soon.Hi, I’m not applying this cycle but I met with the dean of admissions in August via Zoom and he said they are still deciding between a virtual MMI or the SJT (situational judgement test). I’m a recent undergrad from here and they’ve always told us we will find out in NovemberHi everyone! I’m IS first time applicant. Has anyone heard back about whether they are doing virtual interviews?
Hi, current 1st year here! They just recently got approval for an online alternative to the normally in person MMI. They are still working on the details and will notify applicants once they have it sorted it out.
Update as of 10/15: I was in a meeting the other day with Dr. Jandrey and he said the alternative format will be the Situational Judgement Test (SJT) which they have researched and found to be a comparable alternative to the MMI. They are hoping to begin reviewing applications after today and send out "invitations" for the SJT the first week of November. The review and number of applicants they select will be the same as in years past (Initial ranking: 180 & In State Holistic ranking: 60 for a total of 240).

Is this an online test, or something that would be administered during a zoom session?

My friend who is a first year at UCD said that she received her interview invite around mid-November and interviews were in December. That was last year, so I'm expecting it to be a longer wait for Davis based on how a lot of the other schools that I applied to have been behind in sending out interviews, etc.hello! Read your update, thanks for the info! I’m hoping we find out something about interviews next week. The waiting Is unbearable.

I am assuming that this will be the test SVM is using. I am not at all a fan of this format - seems very arbitrary. Additionally, they literally say on the website that they are advising the pilot schools not to weigh the test too heavily in admissions and UCD is going to use this test as the sole metric for determining whether applicants are accepted once they’re invited to interview. This is going to really mess things up for many otherwise strong applicants.
Not confirmed, but going based off what people said on this thread and the fact that the med school used it this cycle. Although, in the end the med school didn’t even end up using the scores in their final admissions considerations, whereas if this is true and they keep things the same as past year this will be an all or nothing for whether applicants are accepted. This is a pilot test and not even designed for vet students; it scares me that it could be the sole indicator of our moving forward so I hope this isn’t true.Is this confirmed though? Their website says that they would let us know in mid-September so I'm a little confused why there hasn't been communication? Maybe they will only tell people that receive interview invitations. I think a bonus of taking an online test is they are scored pretty quickly so the turn around time would hopefully be sooner!

This is crazy! Has anyone looked at the sample questions? Who couldn’t figure out how these should be answered? What relevant information about the applicants can be gained from this? Nothing real...
Hopefully, the vet school will change their mind on this and do as the medical school did - decide not to use it.
Oh this is an interesting format, I looked at the sample questions and I find it weird? I don't know there's something about it I am finding it strange. Anyways, it sucks I was hoping to do an MMI via zoom. I know Davis considers the person's personality a lot during interviews.
I took the CASPER test and I was unaware that it will be a replacement as interviews for Kansas! Thank you for letting me know! 🙂 I think I find it weird because some sample questions are case by case. I feel like the motto of applying to schools are "rolling with the punches" lol.I looked at the questions and it strikes me as pretty similar to CASPer (which a few schools like VMCVM and Kansas required this year in place of interviews). CASPer was different in that it gave you a scenario and the answer was free response/open-ended. While tests feel like a weird alternative to in-person or Zoom interviews, I think the schools are just trying to assess if you have empathy, can problem solve, can work in a group, and can act professionally during conflict.
Like in the first SJT question, if you chose "skip lab for two weeks" as a very effective strategy, that would probably throw up some red flags for the admissions committee.
Try not too worry too much! I know we are all stressed about it, *especially* if Davis decides to use this as an all or nothing for people invited to interview, but this is a weird application cycle and we just have to roll with the punches unfortunately 🙁
I dont think it’s replacing interviews. From emails I’ve received they’ve said it’s low stakes but that they are still doing interviews virtually over Zoom.I took the CASPER test and I was unaware that it will be a replacement as interviews for Kansas! See I mean yes, for sure, some of the responses are obviously completely wrong haha. But there are a LOT of other ones that would require more context than the question gives to really assess them. That’s where the free response aspect of the CASPer gives a lot more flexibility. And plus, the admissions committee isn’t actually reviewing your answers on this test, you’re just getting graded on an overall score of 1-9 for the whole test. So they can’t see which ones you chose or any reasoning behind them for “red flags” per se.I looked at the questions and it strikes me as pretty similar to CASPer (which a few schools like VMCVM and Kansas required this year in place of interviews). I had to take the Casper test for one of the other schools that I applied to, and I personally don't think it's a very good way to analyze someone's judgement. You have to watch a short video of a scenario, and then have 5 minutes to answer three very detail oriented questions. This test is instead testing your ability to type out three good paragraphs in under 5 minutes, isn't that essentially what the essay portion of the GRE was? Whereas, the MMI gives you a straight forward scenario and you have like 7 minutes to answer their questions which I found to be more than enough time during my mock MMI's.See I mean yes, for sure, some of the responses are obviously completely wrong haha. Rolling with the punches is true...just not easy for an applicant like me who feels like I had a really good shot otherwise and whose family and life are really relying on me being able to stay local.

The CASPER test is only good for one cycle.I took it for one of the other schools that I applied to, I wonder if I'm able to re-take it? I didn't really prepare for it that initial time.
Well that sucks lol I wish I had known Davis was going to use it when I initially took it.The CASPER test is only good for one cycle.
honestly SAME. I did okay but I wish I did better.Well that sucks lol I wish I had known Davis was going to use it when I initially took it.
are you guys able to send the score to UC Davis? It is not listed as an option for me.

This is the email we got, you may want to check you spam folder or contact them if you didn't receive this email for some reason.Aw man, I haven't received any email from Davis like the one y'all are talking about. I just know that we should hear something by mid-November, based on the timeline on their website.![]()
Originally they said interview invites get sent out by mid-November and rejections by the end of November, but when they sent the update message about the extended invites to November 23rd they didn't mention anything about rejections.
I'de assume rejections are also postponed about a week or two, but no official news on that yet.
Haha yea! In a way it's nice though, you know up front if you made it to the interview (now CASPER testing) stage or not.I didn't realize it's going to be this soon! Need to read my emails more careful 😆 And now I'm totally panicking.
Thanks so much for including the email! I was able to find it buried in my inbox thanks to your picture! This is the email we got, you may want to check you spam folder or contact them if you didn't receive this email for some reason.
