Ouch, i totally thought that being able to log into the accept/decline appointment site was a good sign for me!......uh oh

You were the first of all of us to get an interview invite...so I'm betting that they're saving you for last this time around 😉

What are the times you folks recieved the emails? im wondering if they are sending them out in groups or sporartically

4:07 pm PST I got my email. Don't worry Ole, so far we haven't heard of anything today that wasn't an acceptance and everyone who could log in, got in - so I know it is still not 100%, but it looks like maybe the posts on Friday about the order they sent them out and only acceptances left was right. We are all rooting for you!!! :hello:

Congrats, guys!!!👍👍

YEAHHHH!!! Congrats to Starlene415!!!!

I KNEW Davis wasn't crazy hahhaa I have a feeling Dr. *** had alot to do with that! =P YEAHHH!!!

Congratualations everybody!! I look forward to seeing you guys in Sept!

I know in the past there was a thread about tablet PC vs. Macbook, but I want another discussion since that thread is 2 (or 3?) years old and technology changes fast. Personally, I am more inclined to get a Macbook. However, if most people in the class end up getting tablet PC, which is usually the case, I would like to hear about what's so great about it before I make my decision.
Couple of things that are on my mind right now:
1. I am very used to Windows, and the times when I had to use a Mac at school I get confused on where to look for certain softwares and functions.
2. At UIUC, some vet students told me that Tablet PC's stylus breaks, and then you'd have to buy a new one. Does the warranty cover that? Does the bookstore sell stylus individually, or would you have to special order?
I press down (not hard, but not light either) when I write, so I am concern about the stylus's longevity.
3. My eyes tire easily watching computer screen. For this reason, I prefer hard copy notes over digital notes. Would this pose a problem when studying with others?
4. Would it be difficult for Mac users to share their notes with tablet PC users? I remember something about this was said during my tour at UIUC....

[Rant]
It sucks that we have to purchase labtop through the school. Price is more expensive, and there's not enough information (yet) to tell us why it is worth our money. If I could get one on my own, I would get one that comes with an OS in Chinese. I know I can later install a Chinese OS or foreign language tool onto the labtop, but I would prefer the convenience of just getting a labtop that comes with one. Also, keyboards. For a computer to be useful to me, I need a keyboard that has Chinese charaters on them so I can type Chinese more easily. When I get a labtop from the school, I doubt I can ask for a keyboard that comes with Chinese symbols--either extra money on my part, or I would have to bring my old reliable desktop to Davis, use the labtop strictly for note-taking and the desktop for all other stuff. All in all, I just don't see it as a good deal.
[/Rant]

Is there a website where you can buy a Davis SVM sweatshirt (like from the bookstore)? I'm on the East Coast, so I can't get to the Davis bookstore.
Thanks!

You can chose to order an emergency backup stylus (I didn't and don't think it's necessary, but it's an option if you want it). But I have to say I press pretty hard when I write with my stylus and it's fine. I didn't press hard at first, at first I was afraid, but you can really press every bit as hard as with a pen/pencil and it's fine. In fact, these days when we take tests and I use pencils I'm always breaking my mechanical pencil. It's much less resilient than my stylus. I also find myself wishing I could just circle stuff that I've written on paper and drag and drop it elsewhere, or if I've erased something I've written on paper, that I could have my magic undo button that exists on my comp and magically make that writing reappear. Talk about spoiled. 😀

Oh, and I think pretty much everything is included in the warranty. They make you get one that will last for four years, so you're pretty much covered if big things go wrong.

3. My eyes tire easily watching computer screen. For this reason, I prefer hard copy notes over digital notes. Would this pose a problem when studying with others?

Not if you don't care. Although I will say that our printers at school, while free, can be pretty unreliable. I'd hate to be relying on printing out my notes for class. I always take notes on my computer and it's one of my favorite things about school. Example: we were in a neuroscience lab this past quarter looking at radiographs of the spine and were looking at a foramen we had learned first last fall quarter. We couldn't remember the name of it, but I had my lab archived on my computer in OneNote. So I searched back through my files and found the name of it. We filled it in and moved on. Easy peasy. I would never have had those materials on me if I didn't just have all of my files and all of my notes on my computer.

Honestly, I love my tablet. Maybe they're not the best tablets in the world (there are other models that are better, I hear), but I wouldn't trade my tablet functionality for ANYTHING. But that might just be me.

I'm hoping for more good news today (is there anybody left? Seems like the thread was quite busy yesterday). And congrats to everybody, and here's to a good Class of 2013!

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who knows, but there is a facebook group already set up for our class: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=73893161927

Maybe now we can start getting to know one another. Feel free to friend me (if you click on the link in my signature, you know what name to look for...but be sure to let me know your screen name from SDN so I know who you are.

Ooh! Great idea. Just added you, Pamona.

So, I'm the one in a blue hoodie, riding a horse on the beach.

Good luck today, Ole and Fairyblast!!! :luck:

So it took me two and a half days to accept my appointment because i was battling with this topic (you can change your mind but i wanted to make a decision now) and I picked the mac. for a few reasons

1) I have talked to student who wish they had gotten the mac because the tablets seems to crash more . . . these people were in the first computer class though so maybe this has gotten better?

2) I have a few friends that are recent converts and are loving their new macs . . . we all learn fast, right?

3) I have another friend who was biking on campus and had her macbook fall from her bag onto the paved bike path and it was fine! yay for durability.

I did have a friend let me play around with his tablet and it was cool but I personally don't think i would change my notetaking habits to utilise all the features. my mac friends say the only setback is radiology when you can't point to/circle things on the image but you can buy a tablet attatchment for macs.

Was anyone who was rejected able to login to the accept/decline site, with all of the questions and options on it?

To those on the waitlist.. I will be planning on declining my spot but have to wait for one grade to come in before I do officially (class isn't needed for Davis but is for Minnesota). Good luck to everyone accepted and keeping my fingers crossed for eveyone on the waitlist.

My girlfriend hasn't heard yet either, so you're not the only one! She's able to log into the website as well, so hopefully you both have acceptances coming just a little bit late. she's at work right now (whereas I'm on spring break and have way too much free time to agonize about this), but I think if she hasn't heard at her lunch break she's going to call them and see about the status of the remaining emails.

Did you guys check your spam boxes? Mine got dumped into there.

Yes, she did check her spam box yesterday evening. still nothing. she did change e-mails in the middle of the admissions process (she graduated and her other email expired in february) and is concerned they might have sent the email to the old email that no longer works. which is part of why she's calling later.

Thats probably where it went unless her interview invite came to her new one. I assumed all remaining ones went out today. As far as the login I know someone on the waitlist that cant log in and anyone rejected cant either. So I'd definitely say its more than just a good sign.

Does anyone know if they can give an estimated financial aid package before the admit date?

Congrats to all who've been accepted! 🙂

Hi all, new to the thread. I am most likely going to be at Davis in the fall, and was wondering... I know they offer a very small number of scholarships to newly admitted applicants, I don't really think I am in the running for one of those, but here is to hoping...does anyone know how and when we will be notified about the scholarships? Thanks!

I think the tablets do crash more. But mine doesn't crash that often. In fact, it's more that OneNote freezes up for me, stops responding, and I have to wait for it to stop spinning. This doesn't happen often for me and hasn't really had any negative impacts yet. But I don't know how representative that is.

3) I have another friend who was biking on campus and had her macbook fall from her bag onto the paved bike path and it was fine! yay for durability.

I dropped my tablet on the concrete floor of the 1020 Valley (first year classroom) a few weeks ago and it was totally fine, too.

I did have a friend let me play around with his tablet and it was cool but I personally don't think i would change my notetaking habits to utilise all the features. my mac friends say the only setback is radiology when you can't point to/circle things on the image but you can buy a tablet attatchment for macs.

It's not just radiology that it's useful for, IMO. I find it useful in

  • Histology when they're pointing out what structures are on the histo slides embedded in their powerpoint presentations
  • In nutrition when the professor starts writing equations and calculations on the board
  • In respiratory anatomy and physiology when the professors start drawing pictures of the pressures inside and outside of the lungs during inspiration and expiration
  • In cardiovascular anatomy and physiology when the professors draw the structures that travel through the thorax and clarify graphs from the text that demonstrate afterload, preload, etc. in the heart
  • Using it with a flashcards program that I have on my computer. I write out flashcards for pretty much every exam using my stylus and then can quiz myself with them as if they were regular flashcards. I LOVE this program.
These are the examples I could think of off the top of my head that I have liked having my tablet functionality for. Honestly, if you think you'll like the mac better, you should get it. I probably put up with some annoyances from the tablet because I love its functionality. But if you think you'd like a tablet, I honestly think its worth it.

Does anyone know if they can give an estimated financial aid package before the admit date?

We didn't get our financial aid packets last year until something like June or July, I want to say. You won't get it until after you've accepted. But unless you get a scholarship, there will be no surprises. Which brings me to...

I received scholarship notification like 3 days after I got my acceptance email. Don't know if that's standard, but I would guess it is. Bottom line, it seems like Davis does give out that kind of financial info before people need to make decisions about which school to go to.

Totally hijacking - but I was curious what program? Any other programs you rec. other than OneNote? Thanks 😀

Ink Flash Cards. It's a Microsoft program you can download for free. There are others, but that's the one I use. I think it's great. Hm...well, Davis uses iTunes University, but they'll get you going with that once you get here and get a user name/password. It's how we get podcasts of lectures. Also Microsoft Outlook. Comes on the computers and you can use if for email. I don't and you probably won't want to either since Davis now uses gmail. But I still use outlook as my calendar. You can download your class schedule into it as well as putting your own stuff into it along with pop up reminders. It's what keeps my life on schedule.

That's all I can think of right now. OneNote is really the ticket, in my book. I use it constantly. 🙂

I got a brochure from admissions office while waiting nervously before my interview about the financial aid process. It was published by UC Davis so I'm pretty sure it's accurate 😉

Early to mid-Feb: receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) by e-mail or US mail (confirmation that your FAFSA has been received)

Mid-April: view your financial aid notice (eFAN) for outstanding requirements online at: http://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/eAwards

Late June: view, accept or decline your financial aid awards online through the eFAN at: http://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/eAwards

August: billing statements are available electronically at http://mybill.ucdavis.edu. After enrolling in courses, you may also view your outstanding account balance using the Student Information System (SISWEB) at: http://sisweb.ucdavis.edu

September: Any Fall Quarter financial aid funds remaining after all University charges have been paid will be disbursed on the first day of instruction by Student Accounting. Students are encouraged to enroll in Direct Deposit at: http://directdeposit.ucdavis.edu

That also seems to match with my memory of how things went last year.

Its a biochemistry class, I have another one Davis would accept in case I didn't pass. But grades came in for one of the two parts to the class and so far so good.

Thanks to everyone who has answered mine (and other) questions. You guys have been a much valued resource.🙂

I just wanted to update and say that my girlfriend called admissions earlier this afternoon, and she did in fact get into Davis! 👍 The admissions committee had updated her email address, but they made a typo in it when they sent her the email on Friday, which is why she never received it. They forwarded her another copy today.

Even though I won't be the one in vet school I look forward to seeing you guys at social events in the fall!

hmmm when do we start looking for apts/houses? what's the best way to find a room in an apt/house with other vet students? =D Thanks! I'm so excited!!

I've heard that people are starting to sign leases for August move-in now! 😱

So, I just re-read my Davis acceptance letter, and noticed that according to Davis I still have to complete Physiology (which I've just done, online) and "another English class" in order to matriculate in the fall (I haven't accepted their offer yet-- deciding between Davis and Penn).

This is a little bit out of left field for me... I attended UC Berkeley and never had to take any English classes b/c I'd done both the English AP's in high school ('98/'99) with scores of 5 on both. I did take 2 comparative lit classes (3 units each) and wrote a 9 unit graded honors thesis in Sociology. I then took a 3 unit "english 1b" type class online through UC Berkeley extension. According to the UC Davis website, they require 8 semester units of English, and if you include my Lit classes (it says lit classes can be included!) I have 9 units including one Composition class (UC Berkeley extension) which should be more than enough to fulfil the requirement.

To this day, I do not know how to contact admissions as I called/emailed them about a million times in the fall trying to figure out if I was taking the right Physio course, and I never got anyone on the phone who could answer the question, and none of my phone messages or emails were ever returned.

I've just replied back to Kim O'Brien (the email address that my acceptance letter came from) basically begging her to please reply ASAP and tell me whether or not sending Davis my AP scores will fix this situation (I did not send out my AP scores to all my schools, as 6/8 of them told me they did not want or need them, and Davis never replied to my inquiries).

Again, according to the website, I should probably be able to use my AP scores to fulfil this requirement, but they are a decade old. Hopefully someone will get back to me and let me know...

This has thrown an interesting wrench into my decision-making process, as, unfortunately, there is literally no way I am willing to take another "english 1a" type of class before matriculation. I'm just not willing to spend the money and jump through the hoops, especially when I had no forewarning of this situation, and I'm obviously more than capable of writing college-level essays and papers. $25 to send in AP scores... That I'll consider... We'll see what happens.... Sorry for the rant 🙁

They would have to be crazy not to take one of these!

If anyone knows a good way to actually get through to someone...

I emailed Yasmin monday afternoon with my question about classes for this semester and she responded within 30 minutes (even with all the acceptance email craziness and server issues on monday morning!)

Good luck Starlene! I really hope you don't have to turn down UC Davis based on something soooo ridiculous!!! 🙄

Sorry to hear about your situation Starlene. I know what you're going through as Western made me jump through all sorts of hoops to get my courses approved...but I think that you shouldn't have trouble as long as you can argue your case and perhaps back it up with some proof (like offering to send them a copy of your thesis!)

As for getting through - try contacting Kathleen at [email protected] regarding your situation if Kim doesn't get through - she's been responsive and quite helpful - although you'll probably be passed off to Kim in the end.

Hey girls, thanks for the support/email addresses. Hopefully this will be easily resolved! And, Pomona, I like your idea about arguing my point 😉, I'm such a Taurus, I hate to back down when I think I'm right .

Starlene,

You should try calling, too. I know it seems like a pain to keep trying when Davis didn't respond to you previously, but there is a difference, now. As much as it sucks, you were just one of hundreds applying before. Now they've accepted you and they're usually much more responsive with the people they've decided they want. Don't give up just yet! I'm sure you can get this resolved!

Agreed! These schools do NOT know what you did in each and every one of your courses and you can easily argue your way into getting courses approved, of course you need to argue in a very respectful way. If not for that methodology, Western probably would have had me retake 3-4 non-science courses, when I spent 6 years or so doing non-science work. Of course, I didn't break out the AP scores...but I could have 😉

Complete hijack here, but didn't want to start a new thread...

We just had Dr. MacLachlan from UCD give a guest lecture here, and he was AMAZING. Wow. You guys really have a gem. 🙂 🙂

Hi Starlene,

I went through a similar situation when I first attempted to graduate from Davis. I had completed an IGETC transfer contract from a community college, and thought all my GE requirements were met and then all of a sudden after I filed my undergrad graduation paperwork I get this notice saying I still needed another english AND social science class! I was sooooo pissed!:bullcrap:

Anyways, it took a little bit of leg work but I was able to get credit for the plethora of english and psych classes that I had already taken. I went online and cut/pasted the class descriptions from the catalogue of all the english and social science classes I had taken from the CC's, then I found similar classes offered at Davis and I cut/past those too. I then created this beautifully laid out document that clearly showed what classes I had taken and how they were essentially the same as the classes Davis had. It really helped the school see things differently because I translated the classes I had taken into Davis's terms.

Hope this helps you...and oh man, can I just say I know how you feel because I was SOOOOO not going to take another history or english class! I'm a science person, and these classes were T O R T U R E for me. I mean, ugh, there is only so many hoops one can jump through without going INSANE!!!
:bang:
:luck:HANG IN THERE!!! :luck:

Is anyone else hoping to rent a room near campus in a dog-friendly (but no cats - sorry, allergies) house with a yard? PM me if you are.
Thank you!! 🙂

Starlene it sounds like Davis just made a mistake. I'm sure if you show them the credit hours you have between lit classes and the online English class then they will see that you have fulfilled the requirement.

I had to go through this with another school = I know how frustrating it can be.

Good luck.

mmine said the same thing but I took the class a year ago.

An update on my acceptance my grades came in and as soon as I get out of the hospital (might be a few. Days as I feel like a gutted fish if I'm not super doped up on diluated) I'll be declining my acceptance

LOL, so VA girl was totally right-- now that I have an acceptance on board I got a VERY rapid response to my email. Kim reviewed my previous transcript, found the two Comparative Literature classes (I had originally coded them "Humanities" instead of English as some schools would not accept them for the English req.) and has given me full credit for completing the English requirement!!!!😀😀😀😀😀

= No sending AP scores, no arguing about course content, no more roadblocks...

= I'm going to Davis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ahhhhhhh what a weight off my shoulders!!!!!! It feels so good to have made a decision, and I am so excited about joining the awesome class of 2013!!!

Can't wait to see all of you in the fall!!!!!

And another huge thanks to all the 2012's that have been so helpful and welcome and generally awesome during this process!!!

Yay! So glad it worked out for you - - - I knew it would 🙂
