You're welcome! I enjoyed figured out the tips and tricks last year and had no plans to walk to the interview in the cold 🙂

More fun stuff, if you're looking to tour the area, you can buy a day pass for the light rail for just a few dollars and it goes all the way to the mall of America!

Last year highs were low 30s. By the end of my weekend it actually felt kind of warm because it's sunny and you adapt quick.

The biggest thing is having good shoes (sidewalks are slippery), a scarf (your face will hurt) and good gloves, plus consider hand warmers.

Final tip is while in MN eat tots. Yes you can get Wisconsin cheese there too.

Hi! Southerner that goes to school in Vermont (where temps are usually in the teens or lower). I would say a heavy jacket, mittens, scarf, and a hat are a MUST. Also shoes that you don't mind getting salt on! I.e. don't risk your dress shoes with you interview outfit because you can't get the salt stains out of some things. When I moved to Vermont I had never even been in temperatures below zero and had no concept of what a foot of snow actually looked like, over prepare so you aren't freezing your butt off!
 
I'm not sure what the current situation or weather forecast is in my home state of MN but I would also recommend bringing a separate pair of waterproof boots in case it snows. Or at least a spare pair of socks to change into in case your feet get wet/soaked - nothing worse than cold wet feet all day. There isn't a ton of walking around outside but there will be some just due to parking and if you want to go to the equine center for the tour there (its a little ways up the road).
 
:hello: I'm on a student panel on 2/2 and doing tours on 2/9, plus hanging at the equine center so I'll probably meet some of you!

The flights leaving around 5am on feb 2nd are significantly cheaper than the flights leaving on feb 3rd. I would also be saving on hotel fees as well. However, I am worried that it would be detrimental to my admission status. Does anyone have any knowledge about this? Thank you!

Current UMN students, how is the Uber and Lyft service & prices over there? I'm planning to use them to travel between my hotel and events.

Not a UMN student but am in Minneapolis for a weekish out of nearly every month without a car haha. Just looked through my Uber trips and have spent anywhere from $9-$20 on a ride which are usually like 10 minute rides. Most between $11-14. Service has never been an issue!

Uber and Lyft are swell, but we also offer rides through the student ambassadors fo' free! The only risk is ending up in a messy car with a hyperactive student. But that's only if you end up with me 😛

I will probably be staying close by so I might take you up on that offer! 🙂 My interview weekend is Feb 8-9. What is the maximum distance that student ambassadors drive to again?

Aside from free rides from UMN students check with your hotel if they have a shuttle. I am staying at Days Hotel this year and Hampton Inn last year, both have shuttles and are right next to light rail stations, and I know that Aloft does too.
 
Does anyone know if the interviews are timed? As in you only get a certain amount of time to answer each question or is it more conversational?
 
Anyone who’s interviewed at UMN before have any general tips or advice for the actual interview? Mines on Thursday 🙁
 
Would anyone happen to know if Minnesota still looks at your overall application after the interview or is acceptance solely based on how well your interview goes?

The final tally is 1/3: GRE/GPA, 1/3 Experience/LORs, and 1/3 interview results
 
Hey all! Is anyone else interviewing on the 1st who's planning on going to the equine center tour afterwards? If so LMK if you wanna meet up and find some food before going on the equine center tour! Also for anyone not used to the cold, I second my fellow Vermont student, your going to want a warm coat, gloves, a hat and real (read not dress) boots to wear outside of your interview. I also highly recommend wool socks or merino wool blend hiking socks to keep your feet warm and dry 🙂

I actually called this morning because I was worried about flights being cancelled. They didn't say anything about cancelling interviews. They did say that if your flight gets cancelled and you can't get a new one, they will try their best to reschedule you for a different weekend or will do the interview through Skype
 
I was looking at the thread for last year's applicants and someone mentioned that OOS students are eligible for in-state tuition after their first year. I can't find anything about that on the website. Does anyone know if this is still true for this year?

While this is true, there have been changes to how residency is decided so it *might* be more difficult now than it was for students in years past. It sounds like everyone's experience has been a little different, so as a student ambassador I can only recommend you ask academic and student affairs directly, and if they can't answer all of your questions they will direct you to contact the residency office. Residency is not decided by the vet school but by the UMN as a whole.

This is a gray area that all tour guides/students at interview weekends have been trained to no longer say. Its greatly variable depending on each individual's circumstance. Its definitely not a guarantee, if you want to know more I'd urge you to ask someone at your interview weekend for the proper contact to ask your questions about residency to. Sorry for the vagueness but sometimes contacting the experts is best 🙂
