Pretty much what Bunnity said. Quite a few of my classmates print out the lecture notes before hand and take notes on them. I pretty much do the same thing, but on a tablet so that I don't have to worry about all the paper. And then if the lecturers upload the lectures last minute (**coughcoughimmuno***), I can still download them fairly quickly and take notes. I might miss a slide or two if I need to convert the file but that's about it.

any word on the waiting list?

I got curious and asked them about my spot on the alternate list. They told me my position and mentioned that so far only one person has been taken off the list, and that they have been given enough deposits to fill the class currently. That means a spot will only open up if someone gives up their deposit. They do expect the list to move later in the summer, and the # of people that get off the list varies from year to year. It was mentioned that the alternate list for IS and OOS was exhausted last year right before orientation. They also try to keep a balance of 30% PA and 70% OOS, drawing from the lists as needed.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of tablet do you have?

I have the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. I like it a lot and it comes with a really nice stylus that is actually pen-like. The iPad might be a little faster at converting the files, but it comes with a really nice note taking app already pre-installed so you at least don't have to purchase one.

That's the one I was planning on getting after I save up over the summer, either that or 8 because it's a little smaller and cheaper. I was getting tired of dealing with paper, but I feel like I don't retain things as well when I just type them.

I have no major complaints with it. I've even printed out papers that I have written on and they've been legible. Definitely go try it out in a store if you can though. I kind of just like the Samsung Galaxy products as a whole and partially got it because I have the SIII phone and wanted to be able to sync everything easily. I just recently bought a MacBook Pro though, so that kind of messed up my syncing plans, but eh.

Well that makes me feel a little better. I didn't really feel like spending the money on a tablet, even though they seem pretty freaking awesome

I just got off the list at ISU, so I will be giving up my spot at Penn! I hope I make somebody on the wait list extremely happy 🙂 Best wishes to you.

Random question about Nutrition...when I visited a few students mentioned they were able to satisfy the requirements from a previous course and open up that time for an elective...what would qualify? I have an online course called "Fundamentals of Nutrition" which was offered through the animal science department, would that be sufficient?

Nutrition is one of the easiest classes to get out of. I don't know of anyone who applied to be exempt that wasn't granted it. What school did you take it through?

It's possible to get out of Immuno (wayy harder) Dev Bio and Histology. I believe you still have to take the lab components of these courses too.

Supposedly you can get out of Neuro lecture but I think you have to have at least a minor in it. I didn't know about this, or I possibly would have tried because the entire lecture material so far has been what I covered in undergrad in a single course. You do still have to take the lab component of Neuro though.

It is also just about possible to get out of biochem...

1) if you got a pHd in biochem (cough cough gellabella)...or

2) otherwise you can try to place out by taking a comprehensive exam that apparently no one has ever passed. Maybe if you are a biochem nerd it might be worthwhile.

Thanks Orca I will try... I am a University of Vermont Employee so I was able to take Nutrition online for free through them. I took Immunology at a medical school for one semester during my master's program so I'm not sure about that one...I also work in an Immunology lab now. Not even going to try to get out of Dev Bio and Biochem since I barely made it through the first time around. Thanks!

Have any of the incoming students heard anything from the school besides that random e-mail that said they'd be sending more e-mails? I want to try and get my rabies vaccines and I wasn't sure if I should rely solely on the websites info or wait for more direction.

You'll get more emails sometime during the summer. If you want to get your vaccines done and have questions, I'd contact Ashra in Student Affairs. She either knows the answer or will get the answer for you.

Just remember rabies is free if you are on the aetna student health plan. There is no reason to get it ahead of time. It is all organized for the class as a whole by the administration. One of the big pluses at Penn!

I haven't gotten anything other than that email either. I've just been relying on the websites for immunizations and got my titers. :xf: that I still have immunity for rabies.

Hi everyone! I got a call on Tuesday saying that a spot had opened up (I was on the alternate list)...I was shocked and elated, since I had heard the class was full. Penn has been my top choice this whole time, between their overall strength of program, their equine caseload, and the research opportunities. I'm torn now, though, as I decide between them and my in-state (VMRCVM), which financially is much better (both in terms of tuition and cost of living). I sent my deposit in, and I just signed a lease for a place to live on Monday (what timing!). As I try to make this choice, I would appreciate any input you guys could offer!

Also, are any of you fellow horsey people? The cost of board in the Blacksburg area is incredibly reasonable, but I've heard it is very pricey up there around Philly...it would be really difficult to have to leave my horse at home, since he helps keep me sane when I'm busy and stressed.

Anyway, yay! And thanks in advance for any help 🙂
