Hi all - was wondering if you thought it was worth it to visit New Bolton again now that I'm accepted if I know that it's basically all I ever dreamed of in terms of equine medicine (but I am still considering other factors relevant to my decision). I would have to fly in, and I don't know how I would actually get out there. But Mac Keiter just emailed out to accepted candidates who missed going to NBC on Feb 14th (because of the weather) and who maybe wanted to go see it. Worth it if I already know it is equine mecca? lol
It's your call--you're the only one who knows whether it's feasible for you and how much it'll affect your decision. I'm at the end of LA Block at the moment, so I'm getting a bit sick of the place, but if you're into equine, it's definitely an experience. Here's a brief list of all our shiny stuff:
-The main hospital with surgery and procedure rooms and four barns for our in-patients. The lobby is under construction at the moment, but it's pretty sweet.
-The orthopedic building with fancy surgery suites, their own barn with sling stalls, a recovery pool, ect. It had a zebra in it a few weeks ago.
-Radiography, CT, MRI, scintigraphy
-Regular ICU and NICU
-Shiny new building for isolation and colic patients
-An indoor ring for under saddle work
-A treadmill+endoscope setup. The treadmill has its own building.
-A "sports medicine" building with awesome ultrasound machines and other fun stuff
-A breeding facility to make new horses any way you want 'em
-A post room
-A toxicology lab
-Dean Richardson and all his ortho toys
-Mike Ross and all his lameness toys
-A teaching herd that's remarkably tolerant of rectal palpation
-A research herd of semi-feral ponies
-A working dairy and swine facilities in case you get bored of the ponies
-Research up the frickin' wazoo
-More stuff that's probably fascinating which I've forgotten 'cause I'm small animal
Yeah, we've got all the toys. If you decide to come here, you'll get the grand tour during orientation.
