UPenn c/o 2020 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I freaked out and thought I didn't submit UPenn's supplemental app, but in the middle of doing so, I realized I submitted it last week.
Don't ask me how.. :smack: Good thing I didn't submit it twice. Pretty sure that would've looked bad on my part.

There's nothing else we do for UPenn anymore right? just wait? no extra essays or anything?

If we get an interview invite, when will we be notified? I'm an OOS btw.

If Penn is still doing things the way they have in previous years, they do things in waves. I can't remember when exactly they started having interviews (you can check last year's thread) but the interviews were typically on Fridays and the group for each interview date was notified by email about a month before. Personally my interview was the last date (February 13th) and I was notified about a month before then. Meanwhile some people had their interview in December so they were of course notified earlier.

I visited PennVet a few months back and met with Rosanne and a very helpful rising third year who I've kept in contact with. I LOVED it more than I expected I would at PennVet, and I'm very hopeful as a PA resident with great experience, eLORS and my personal statement that I may be considered for an interview. In the supplemental, I wrote about how I want to do mixed/possible zoo because I have grown up on a farm with so many different animals and I want to give the care back to them that they gave me. In my VMCAS app, I wrote about how Penn's interconnectedness with OneHealth (the research and PennVet's firsts), and the electives within the curriculum were what drove me to really pursue PennVet. I'm terrified because I was told my GPA was average-ish and that I should raise my GRE scores(which didn't go as well as I planned). I really hate how some schools base a lot of their decision on a GRE score, but I guess you've gotta thin the herd somehow...

I am an IS and applied to Penn as well. My GRE wasn't great either, which I'm nervous about. If you don't mind my asking, what did you get on the GRE?

I got a 150 Q, 148 V, 4.5 A. I was told they don't take highest sections like other schools do, nor do they look at the writing. I retook it, got a 154 Q, and a lesser writing score. I was told they'll "at least see I improved in the quant like they wanted"... I was told to shoot for your best in the Quant.

Yeah I actually got around the same scores you did, and have an "average" gpa. Fingers crossed we both get to the interview stage!

SAME! Was told my GPA was so-so , but have As in most of my prereqs for Penn. I was told if you get an interview, it's then a 50-50 from there...

Here's a paragraph from an email I received today regarding interviews. So sit tight and don't dwell on hearing from them until December at the very earliest.

"In December the Admissions Committee will begin to read applications and make decisions. Fall transcripts are not required. If needed, we will contact you. All prerequisite courses must be taken no later than the end of 1st Summer Session and all final transcripts must be sent to Admissions prior to July 20th. Additionally, you must have earned a grade of C or better in these courses. Interview invitations are sent out weekly from December through February, with at least two weeks' advance notice of the interview date. Those applicants whom we believe are less academically qualified will begin to hear from us as soon as we can determine their comparative ranking with other applicants. In short, we do not interview nor do we accept all at one time. It is a three-month process."

Thanks for the heads-up 🙂 Makes it a bit easier for us.

Just wanted to say good luck to everyone applying (it's still so surreal to be on the other end of this now)! You guys are gonna love it here 🙂

Wait... We're classmates and I don't know who you are!
Hahah ditto! But if you are who I think you are (based on your screenname) we totes went out for margaritas after the first anatomy exam...

Hi!! Just wondering.... has anyone heard back/ gotten an interview invite yet??

I thought they said that interview invites were December-February? So as far as I know no one should have heard back yet

Oh yes... Now I see it in my giant google sheets doc! Thanks 🙂

I've heard that it's "better" the later you hear back from Penn, is that true? Obviously just getting an interview invite at all is awesome, but I've heard that they interview the people they like best last?

I disagree with this. I'm not sure there is a time they interview the people they like best, but other than a designated large animal day, every interview group seems to be quite variable.

Oh, good. I like that better. 😀 Thanks

My friend who graduated Penn before I started here basically said....(and I don't want to get anyones hopes up or anything, but I only know because he was very involved in the admissions process)....the first few groups that get invited basically all are already going to be accepted, they just want to make sure you're not a nutso. That being said, 90% of the people I interviewed with are in the class with me now.

Again, may not be entirely accurate but that's what seemed to be the case for the years that he participated in the admissions process.

Good luck guys 🙂 we're rooting for ya!

^^what dirtanddog said. I interviewed on one of the first days last year and basically everyone got in from that date.

Hey new applicants! I'm excited to start seeing you guys around school come interview season. 🙂

Regarding the interview timing, I interviewed on the first day and multiple people straight up told me (including actual Penn faculty) that being in the early rounds was a good sign. That being said, most of my friends here now were interviewed during the later dates, so it's not a bad thing at all if you aren't first! If they invite you to interview at all, that means they like you. 😉 I also think a lot of the early people are "hot commodities" in general and don't necessarily end up at Penn because they have other offers, so don't worry about all the spaces being filled up.

How many interview days does Penn usually have?

Not sure the exact number, but last year it started in early January and there was two interview sessions (~15-20 people per session) each Friday until late March I believe.

**were. Pardon my grammar. All the stinky anatomy goats are frying my brain

No I'm pacing myself haha. The genitalia was not pleasant either...

When it was actually fresh, yes it was great. A week later when it smells like rotting flesh, not so much!

I somehow didn't notice it too much. Granted, I had just gotten rid of my rotting anatomy dog, which likely contributed to my horrible sinus infection and inability to breathe for all of anatomy.

Hi everyone, just wanted to say hi to those that have already been accepted and those applying to PennVet now. Im a deferred applicant from last year and will be a first year in August. Good luck to those in the application process now.

Judging by last year's UPenn thread, the first round of interview invites will likely be going out tomorrow! Anyone privy to info on the validity of this hunch, or are well all pretty much in the dark right now?

Any tips on the interview? 😀

Congrats! It's a fairly relaxed interview IMHO. Just know your application & experiences. If you've done research, be prepared to be asked detailed questions about it. They typically ask one ethics related question, but nothing too difficult. I was asked about the use of live animals in research. Make sure you are wearing shoes that you are comfortable walking in, and it's probably a good idea to use the bathroom prior to going on the tour of the hospital because it's easy to get lost in there if you are separated from the group!

P.S. Go to happy hour that night! Mingle with some current students and teachers.

Thanks for the advice! PennVet is my top choice, so I'm crazy excited to have gotten an interview with them. The vast majority of my experience is research, so I'll definitely be polishing up on some of my older stuff, as well as making sure I can concisely explain what my lab is doing now and how it's influenced my decision to pursue vet med. And I'll definitely make it a point to hit up the happy hour, thanks for the heads up.

I haven't heard of any but it seems like last year they started sending them out the first week of December so who knows

Congratulations everyone! I wish you all the best 🙂

I'm just waiting for them to reject me 😛 I should've applied somewhere that doesn't care about GRE like Mizzou because mine were ass. However, I do have a decent GPA and experiences.
