Are they sending invites out once a week or more often?

Usually by this point, they have already sent out 1 wave of rejections. The next wave will be after all of the interviews are done, historically this is done really late, much past the actual last interview date (like march or april?)

Congrats everyone!!! So exciting.

What is everyone's main area of interest? I read somewhere they reserved their later interviews for large animal-focused applicants.
I'm small animal/exotic 🙂 I wouldn't worry if you're a large animal person, their interview date is usually later in the game since they take a trip out to the large animal campus, so I'd assume those invites go out later.

Awesome, thank you so much. Congrats on the interview! Go crush it!

Are people still getting invites this week or were these sent all on the same day?

There is a "large animal day", and it is scheduled for February 1st. It gives Penn the opportunity to show large animal prospects New Bolton Center, which is the large animal hospital. 🙂

Thanks so much!

I was looking at Penn Vet's website, and they listed estimated room & board as a little over $20,000/year, but their undergrad website lists estimated off-campus housing costs at around $10,000/year. I was wondering why there was such a large discrepancy. Could any current Penn students could give me an estimate of what housing costs are? Thanks!

There’s a possibility they’re counting the full 12 months instead of 9 months (which undergrad prob is using?) so that you can make sure you’re able to take out enough loans??? I’d definitely also contact whoever determines the estimates (financial aid office maybe???) because they might be able to give you an actual reason why they’re so different.

I pay $650 a month for rent in an apartment that has laundry, tons of living space, free parking, my cat, and is an 8 minute walk from school. On top of that I pay $15 a month for internet and whatever electricity and heat costs per month. (electricity is always ~$30-40, heat can be as cheap as $8 in the summer, and up to $100 in the winter because it's an old house). A lot of the other reasonable apartments around here cost up to ~$800/month (unsure of how utilities and all factor into those). Really expensive apartments can be $1,000 per month and up. People that have the cheapest, but nicest-for-their-money living situations (in my opinion) usually are splitting a house among a few different people.

What's great is most people don't need cars here, my walk to school is only 8 minutes each way (yes, it's safe enough, I've never felt unsafe in 3 years, but be smart about it). Pretty much everything you need is a $2.00 trolley ride or uber ride away.

Groceries probably cost a little more here than they do in other places because it's a city, but you can be smart about how you spend this money. When I go home to North Jersey and shop there, the prices are really not any different.

If you need health insurance through the university, it's $1,500 per year. This DOES cover your rabies vaccine if you need it. If you aren't on the university health insurance, it costs you a little less than $1,000 to get it during your first semester.

The school still makes first and second years buy/rent a microscope. For me, it cost $350 for two years, but I think they've changed that now.. However, you can buy these second hand off older years usually for ~$150, and then re-sell it when you're done.

Of course there is a lot of miscellaneous things that you CAN spend your money on, but you don't have to. The clubs sell a lot of PennVet merch, a lot of people go out on weekends, and the option to order food is sometimes the only happiness you get when you're trying to learn 24 lectures for an exam that's in the morning.

So yeah, how much money you need to live here really depends on you and your needs. Personally, I don't think it has to be crazy expensive.

You also do have the option of taking out what you think you'll need from loans and then if you realize once you start school that you don't need all of that money, you can give some back.

They definitely round up some of those estimations to allow you to take out more in loans. I pay $660 a month (my roommates pay a less because they have smaller rooms) and this includes all utilities except for gas which has been about $6 per person per month. If you have a car, parking passes are pretty expensive. I’m a 10 minute walk from school and it’s a nice neighborhood, lots of kids and dogs/cats around. There’s lots of reasonable housing but some people choose to live in new apartment buildings that are more than $1000 per person or live in center city which is farther away and more expensive. If you budget your money it’s not terrible. I personally spend way too much money on coffee but that’s my guilty pleasure. Eating out is also expensive but if you meal prep and stuff you can save a lot of money. At school there are a bunch of refrigerators and microwaves for people who bring their own lunch and tons of lunch talks where they provide food

Does anyone know when the last weekend of interviews is? This is the last school I’m waiting to hear from about interviews and I’m trying to plan some stuff but don’t want to have to cancel if I do get a late interview?
Like, do they go through presidents weekend? Through all of feb?

If no one on here replies, I definitely think it’d be fine to call the school and ask what the last interview date is

The last interview day is February 15th.

Will there be no small animal interviews on that date?
Let me clarify that you can be large animal/equine/food animal focus and be invited to interview on any of the interview dates, but large animal day is usually only large animal/equine/food animal focus because it takes place at the large animal hospital that is outside of the city.
