UTAH Acceptance?!?

Good question, I feel like this is kind of like a reality show and we are making it through elimination round after elimination round. I feel like my odds are improving with no rejection yet but if the odds are still 4 to 1 at getting accepted in March then that blows

The last few weeks I've been hoping to open my mail box and see something from the U. Now I go home and dread finding something in there. Who knows what the odds will be come march. I imagine that it will be better than 4 to 1. They have sent out a lot of rejections over the last month and half.

I am guessing the odds depend a lot on what your application looks like...may be higher for some, lower for others.

I can't tell you where I work. Let's just say that it is for an EMS agency that doesn't make you so proud that you want to wear their T-shirt around town. If you know EMS in Utah, I'm sure you know who I'm talking about.

Ah, my old fire dept. won the bid over you guys, and will start running their own ambulance company in the next year or two from what I understand. I am sorry you got stuck working for them. Do you know a guy by the last name of Sellers that works as a medic and for UFA?

You heard right. I think that they're going to start taking over some areas in the west end of the valley this spring in fact and then slowly gobble up the rest over the next year or two.

I do know Sellers. I've never worked a shift with him but I bump into him now and again.

No need to be sorry. It's not the most glamorous agency to work for, but when one considers pay, flexibility of schedule, and ample time to sleep and study, it is quite possibly the best part-time job I've ever had. It kind of stinks that I have fewer opportunities to function as a paramedic, but I'm so focused now on the MD that it really doesn't bother me.

Are you with a department now?

They'd be a good company to work for if it wasn't for the management.

I'm not with any department now, I actually work at a trauma center out of state. I do miss EMS though. Hopefully one day I can at least ride with them again. Best guys I've ever worked for.

I'm not too stressed about it, but I got neither a rejection letter nor a financial aid email. Wonder what that means? That they completely forgot about me? 😛

Just send the school an email and say that most of the people who you know that applied this year were contacted by the financial aid office and you were wondering if you needed to fill out any forms as well.

What could it hurt?

I second this motion. Then, if it's not too much trouble, post what they told you after your conversation.. perhaps this could give us some (more?) insight into whether or not those emails meant anything.

THANKS!! 😀

Not yet. Got a bit lazy. I'll do it now.

edit: ahhh there it is. Sent feb 1st. I had the email after all!

Haha, no more additional clues to fuel the fire for the rest of us...guess I will just enjoy the rest of winter until April comes around and I finally hear something from the last outstanding school on my list.

I wish it were so easy. Waitlisted at two schools and nothing from Utah. I've been accepted to a few DO schools, but really not that excited about any of them. I'm really hoping that at least one of the three MD schools I'm waiting on pans out.

Did you ever figure out why you were left off the financial aid mailing list?
Hey,

I called Utah's office of admissions and they said that they emailed this message to everyone on Feb. 1st but some applicants (especially with gmail) didn't receive it although their system shows it being sent. They are more than happy to resend it to you. I'm assuming they are being up-front with me and the email is no indicator of our current or future status with regards to our application.

I think since I have gmail and did get their email, I must be in...sweet!

FYI: My lab partner got the financial email, however he just got a rejection on Saturday! I don't believe the email means anything. Good luck everyone, look forward to April!😕

Good to know they are at least doing something.

Wow...just looking over the UofUT match list for 2006....not too shabby for a school whose USMLE scores are a little bit below average (said the students who gave my tour...not sure if that is even accurate).

18 - ER
12 - Anesthesiology
4 - Radiology
3 - Derm
And a little bit of everything else.

I saw that list before...but it seems to be missing quite a few students...unless the graduation and matriculation rates are below 70%...which I doubt.

Disclaimer at the bottom...

"Note: all Match information was voluntarily provided by the students of the graduating class. Not all students are included in these data."

😉

Results for 2006 provided below that.

Which is why I referred to the 2006 match (which had complete data) rather than the 2007 match. 😉

Does anyone know if the legislature said yes to funding an additional 30 students next year? (starting 2009) I thought they were going to, then Utah's economy tanked and it sounds like they pulled funding on a lot of eduction programs. I wonder if this was included.

So I interviewed at Utah at the beginning of November. I'm OOS (from Nevada), and I've been accepted at four other schools (Nevada, USC, Emory and SLU). My issue is that my fiance has been applying for English Ph.D. programs and so far has been rejected from one in LA, one in Reno and one in Atlanta, and then he was waitlisted at Utah. He contacted Utah, and they said that there is a very good chance that he will be admitted, but that they can't notify him until the beginning of April. I'm still waiting to hear back from Utah and Wash U, but if Utah is the only place that he gets in, it would obviously be amazing if I also get into Utah.... that way we can both pursue our dreams. I really liked the school and location during my interview... so I'm wondering if this situation would merit a call to the med admissions office... letting them know my dilemma. I'm just not sure if it would be OK since he hasn't been formally admitted yet, and won't be until after I have hear yes or no from Utah 🙁 What do you all think?

not sure.. that's a tough situation. take my advice for what it's worth (probably nothing), but i would guess that the phone call would be more appropriate after you've been waitlisted.

You are correct, which is why the admissions committee is taking so long, they are trying to decide who gets the extra 30 spots...keep your fingers crossed! 😀

Calling the admissions office will do you no good in this situation and you may be seen as annoying, I would definitely avoid calling, just keep hope alive!

Do you mean that they may be giving the spots this year?

Yeah, if that's the case, then the poster asking the question is incorrect. I'm confused, but if those spots were for 09, then it should have nothing to do with us, correct?

That's what I'm assuming, but it really doesn't make sense with his post.

I actually have been emailing back and forth a bit with the dean of admissions about an issue that is irrelevant to this thread, but he alluded to the idea that the legislature may be changing some things including how residents are classified and class size, although it was my feeling that as of our conversation, nothing had been decided. A quick search of the local news has nothing on it either, so that would seem to confirm that nothing has been decided yet.

I have a feeling that it won't help you if you call, mostly because the people in the admissions office have nothing to do with whether or not you're admitted. Sending a letter of intent to Utah and asking the admissions office to forward it to the admissions committee may be much more prudent and effective than a phone call. Best of luck though!

How much do think it would help to send in a letter of interest updating them of recent activities at this point? Kind of too late to influence their decision at this time?

I thought that this year meant the 08-09 class. Next year to me was going to be the 09-10 class. My understanding was that the spots were for the 09-10 class-next year. But, I guess that they aren't going to do it, from what I hear, I was just wondering if anyone heard anything different.

Yeah I have no idea. I just really really want one of those 19 spots for OOSers. BTW, impressive mdapps profile

Mr Crimson,

Your accomplishments are great-MD Apps. As far as Dartmouth are you set on MD PhD, or did you want to complete the MD PhD track at Utah?

This next comment is a general statement and not regarding you in particular.

But I sometimes I don't understand why students from Utah are so prone to stay in Utah for all their training?

Undergrad, Grad, Fellowship... future all desired to be spent in one local...
If one is afraid to learn from the outside world, ignorance is strongly perpetuated.

I know why I might want to stay. My family is here. my wife's family is here. I like my current home. I love the skiing. Great trail running. Safe city. Moving is a pain.

I'm not so sure that staying in one place perpetuates ignorance. Think of it from another perspective. Staying in one place allows you to really get to know people, giving you opportunities to make a difference in your community.

For me it's all about not moving again. I hate it.

The reason that I am not pursuing the U anymore is for that exact reason. I have been told by too many people that I respect that it is career suicide to obtain all degrees from the same university. However, on that same thread I can easily understand why people want to stay in Utah. Families are close (mine is) and it is hard to leave them when a lot is going on with them. I don't think I am going to find a better outdoors scene than living in the Salt Lake Valley. Living at the base of the cottonwood canyons has definitely spoiled me. Crime is low, and there is a well-entrenched support network to rely on. Even simple things are hard to walk away from, like cheering on U of U athletics is going to be hard for me to give up, (I love your avatar, btw...) I am going to miss going to RES, or the JMHC. (Crimson doesn't stand for harvard crimson to me, but Utah red..) I think that there are plenty of very smart people in Utah who will undoubtedly be successful who will do everything here, and are staying for those primary reasons. I have a couple of friends who are M1s at the U and they will be phenomenal. Although I decided not to pursue the U anymore at this point, I think those who do are still going to a great school, and I wish them all luck.

Another factor to consider why so many people just seem to stay, doing ugrad->med->residency or some other combination is that just aren't any options if you want to stay in the general area. The closest institution of similar size is what, Las Vegas (6hrs) or Denver (9hrs?). You go to the East coast and that 6hr drive will get you from Boston, through NYC and usually to Philly, which gives you a LOT of options.

Well, I have bad news, I'm definitely going to be a part of the class of 2012. My request for a deferral was denied. I'm actually really depressed right now, because that means I'll be apart from my fiancee for 3 years. Ah well, it'll hopefully work out for the best.

Wow, 3 years is a long time. My wife and I spent a month apart while I did a study abroad several years ago, and that was hard enough.

Don't take for granted what a huge accomplishment it is to be accepted though. I'm driving myself nuts hoping that some school will take me.

Hey if you get into another medical school that would let you defer, you should definitely consider that! That way you could be with your fiancee this whole year! 👍😀

Don't worry, 2 weeks into Anatomy and you will have forgotten all about your fiance 🙂

Why is that? Does studying anatomy make women repulsive? Or is that he will be so in love with the study of the human body that there will be no love left for his fiance?

I'd like to hope it's the latter. It'll be a big test, that's for sure. But, there really isn't any way around it. She's attending the DVM program at Colorado State, so she can't leave, and she absolutely doesn't want me to wait (I guess money must be important...😀).

We decided when we first started getting serious years ago that we would separate for these few years. At least we only live 6 hours apart (1 hour by plane), so we can visit each other frequently. But the first few weeks will be a big shock, seeing as how we aren't used to spending ANY time apart.
