VMCAS Questions and Rants c/o 2029

How should I put pet sitting experience on my application? Is it best to put each as an individual experience with the client info or count them all together as a "self employed pet sitter"?

Im planning to submit my app this weekend but one of my LOR's will be pending submission (theyll probably submit late next week). Would that delay verification or will they still verify since I'll already have the required 3 submitted?

also a second question: one of the vets i interned with was previously an associate at one clinic but then began her own practice (i followed her). How should I indicate that in the experiences section? Should I separate the clinics? I did basically the same stuff at each practice.

It does not delay verification!

Also, I would put them separately since they are two separate facilities/clinics.

How does humor come across in the PS? I realized that I had a couple of sentences that may come across as funny, while trying to write my PS in a voice unique to me. Does humor come across poorly in these? I would be happy to share what I have so far as well if anyone is interested.

Thank you!
Adding in bits of appropriate humor is great! I think it sets your statement apart from the other 1000+ applicants and makes it more memorable for the admissions staff

Hello all,

Great news I was just accepted to the Spring cohort at LMU! I was hoping to speak to someone who is a student there and ask some questions! 🙂 Thank you in advance! 🙂

Does anyone have an answer to this?: I did a Loop Abroad course, in which the credits came from a University in Ohio, but I physically did the class abroad. Would this be marked as Study Abroad or no as the course came through a US university? Thanks!

Question!

If I am planning to take some pre-requisites in the Spring of 2025 and I have not yet attended that institution.. How do I go about that? It is going to ask for transcripts from that university but I do not have any yet.

You just put it in as a planned course, planned courses do not require transcripts. You would put in the school/institutions information just to be like for example:

"I'm planning on taking biochem 1 through NCSU spring of 2025" but also since it's a planned course schools understand that things happen so you might end up taking it at another institution or different time (ex: like taking it winter term versus spring or summer versus winter or spring, etc). You just have to put pre-reqs as planned because if you don't then the schools won't know you plan to take them and if they can't see you "plan" on finishing your required pre-reqs they can and likely (and have) will deny you for not fulfilling requirements.

If a school requires that transcript after your spring semester they will likely let you know (especially if it's a pre-req). Some schools don't require transcripts for fall or spring courses until they have give you a seat offer, it just depends so make sure to check with them. But for now, if you have a planned course for even fall 2024, transcripts are not required for planned courses (nor would you really be able to get one since you haven't officially started/enrolled for those classes).

Awesome! Thank you so much for your response. You answered every question-- I was also worried about if my plans were to change so thanks for addressing that. I just am so scared to do something wrong with these transcript entries and have the whole thing be null, lol!

Just looking at the VMCAS experience section and would love some examples of how to write the descriptions. I've read that you can do bullets or sentences and I am pretty sure I would like to stick to sentences/paragraph form. I am just trying to figure out how to write these and fit both a practical description of duties and also what was learned/the impact. Some actual examples would really help me out, especially ones that aren't in the veterinary experience section. Thanks!

Hi guys,

For my experiences, I was in a service fraternity for all 4 years of college, but had a leadership position for only one semester. Should I list this as 2 separate activities or find a way to differentiate that when I enter it in in the description? I'm not sure if my title should be as just a member or as service vice president either. Thanks!

I'm just about ready to submit but am overthinking my AP classes once again. On the applicant help center it says to enter AP classes with a grade of CR. On my college transcript they're listed with a grade of S, so should I put what's on my transcript or what the help center says to do? Also, do I need to put my AP scores under the test scores section?

I was a TA in college for multiple semesters and while they were all the same department/subject, each semester the professor(s) and specific class(es) I TAed for changed and my specific TA role changed too, like some semesters I was a discussion leader, some I was a lab TA, and some I was a lecture aide. I was originally just gonna combine these into one "Teaching Assistant" experience but now im thinking maybe I should separate them out. Thoughts?

If I had 1 letter of rec not submit but I areaedy have 3 completed (they were going to be my 4th), should I just delete the 4th? Is this something schools can see one did not submit

Hi! I spoke to an advisor at LSU and asked her thoughts about this. She said one key detail is to not over explain or get too detailed. Admissions boards understand what veterinary experience means. For example, if you do the lab work in your clinic, that's great! You can say that but don't list out "I do the CBC, the chemistry, the ear cytologies, the fecals, etc." they KNOW. Keep it broad and highlight what stood out to you, what did you get out of the experience. I stuck to paragraph form personally. Even for non-veterinary experiences, keep it pretty broad and just focus on highlighting how that experience makes you a better applicant. Use it to make yourself sound good! Granted, this is the advice of one singular advisor but I really liked it.

Hi! Im lowkey overthinking my descriptions now. Did you state "Learned...." etc.? I was unsure about how explicit to be about that aspect.

I submitted recently and VMCAS said I am missing my Masters's program transcripts. I just started the program 2 weeks ago so I don't have anything to submit. Has anyone else had this issue?

Hey all, one of my recommenders didnt fill out the occupation, professional title, organization, and telephone portion of their rec request (from what I can see in the references and evaluations part of the downloaded pdf). Could this cause issues? Should I contact VMCAS about this?

This happened to someone else on the APVMA facebook page, they contacted VMCAS and they were able to help them get it fixed/direct you how to get it fixed! 🙂

did you mark them as in progress classes? if they're in progress you shouldn't have to provide transcripts, if you didn't mark the semester as in progress then that's why they're saying you need to send something in.

how to gently remind your recommender to submit their letter before you have a panic attack <3

Just send them an email reminding them of the due date. Not much else you can do. what I’ve learned asking for letters over many many years is that people who are gonna wait until the last minute are gonna wait no matter what you do.

On that note I have a pre-scheduled email that gets sent out to ALL of my recommenders 1 month, 1 week, and then a few days from the deadline. I state that its an automated email so that there is no pressure to respond. The email contains a link to the recommendation portal, reminds them of the deadline, and has an additional little thank you for their time. I also let them know that I'm happy to provide more info / help if needed. When a recommendation is completed, I simply delete any future emails for that person. This has worked great for me thus far! 🙂

POST SUBMISSION EDIT WARNING!!
If you add experiences AFTER submitting, the second you click "Save & Continue" it will submit it as complete and you CANNOT go back an adit it!
I unfortunately learned this the hard way and now have an incomplete experience on my application, with no contact information and the descirption is literally just a period.

Will this significantly impact my application? I have been panicking for the last 30 minutes. It is highschool choir so, it itsn't super important but now it looks unfinished and unprofessional.
I did the same thing. I just created a new experience and changed the title to "Volunteer (Updated)" because it is the same times and stuff. Not sure if that's the right way to go about it but that's the only thing I could think of to fix it.

Don't worry. The details of high school choir will not make or break your application.

How/where are you guys seeing last 45 GPA after VMCAS verification? It doesn't seem to be on my little summary page with the rest of the VMCAS-calculated GPAs

VMCAS doesn't calculate last 45. Some individual schools calculate it so that's where a lot of us are getting it, but also you can calculate your own.

I could just be overreacting and freaking out because I just submitted my application and I'm just going to be freaking out thinking I could've done things different lol. I noticed yesterday that one of my transcripts didn't transfer over from my application from last year so VMCAS hasn't received my transcript yet. I got an email from Parchment early this morning saying that it was delivered to VMCAS. How long until it'll show up on my application as received and they can start the verification process? I sent VMCAS an email this morning out of a panic too lol. My application is completely finished and submitted, just waiting on that one transcript to show up as received.

Does anyone have experience listing an experience or job at an establishment that is no longer in business? I have two of those and the supervisors have both moved on to different fields (these were high school retail/food service jobs) so I no longer have any contact information for them or the business. I listed them anyway and put a note in the description that the business no longer operates, but still put "yes" for the may we contact area even though there's no contact information. Thoughts???

It’s fine. No one will be trying to contact people from a non-vet position you held in high school.

Hello Everyone!
I submitted my application early August, but I was double checking all my verified application details now that the official deadline is coming up. I was wondering if anyone had any insight into how AP credit works for prerequisites? I remember indicating it for some prerequisite's on my actual application, but I just noticed that it's not actually showing up on several of my verified applications. I've emailed the schools I'm applying to to double check if there was any issues, but I wanted to see if anyone else was having this problem. If it helps, the only prerequisite I'm using the AP credit for is General Chemistry, and only partially, as I only took 1 semester and 1 lab in college.

The school I went to a long time ago just considered AP classes and CLEP tests as pass/fail so they had no impact at all (not positively nor negatively, it was just left out and the prereq gpa was calculated based on 60 credits not 64 or whatever).

When I used to give tours for the school, I’d actually tell young students to consider just taking the course for an easy A in college because if you have the ability to test out, you’d probably get a really good grade and that would boost your GPA a little where the testing is neutral and does nothing for you. But sometimes testing out makes financial sense too and it’s a source of pride. And obviously that ship has sailed for you, but just commenting in case any high schoolers are reading this.

I put pet sitter (my business had a name and put that as employee) and then estimated hours over the 5 years I have done it.

Anyone else who has submitted feeling a huge void?! Like what... I DON'T have another essay to write, supplement to fill out, or 900th read-over of the entire application to do anymore. Send help??? 🤣
Hahaha, no actually because I am still telling myself that TECHNICALLY I could try and apply for 1 or 2 more schools, even though I am mentally at my capacity for writing essays. I still feel like there's things I should be doing and writing. The void will hit me after Monday!

I know this is way early but I'm trying to plan in advance for moving purposes - does every school in VMCAS release admission results around the same time? And is the deadline to accept/deny a seat pretty variable or is it one standardized date?

I am in the same boat! Parchment says that VMCAS received my transcript on Monday but it hasn't shown up on my application. I'm submitting it today! I read somewhere on the VMCAS website that you can submit without having the transcript attached yet, but they can't process your application without receiving it. So my guess is that the verification process will take longer. I'm really hoping that it isn't an instant rejection? I'm sure VMCAS is receiving a million transcripts right now so they're probably taking longer to attach them to applications.
Edit: It also says somewhere that it can take up to 5 business days to post to your application after it is actually received by VMCAS.

Schools do not release acceptances all at the same time. Some schools will send out acceptances before new year while some schools don't even interview until February.

There is a single date by which students need to give their acceptance that all schools are technically beholden to with exception of those with off semester classes

Mine ended up being posted the next day after they received it! Still waiting on verification though

I submitted my application over a week ago and it was verified pretty quickly and I already got an interview. My last two of four references were submitted today. Will those be sent automatically to the schools on my list or do I have to do something?

I also submitted and was verified before my last letter was submitted and, by checking my portals, it looks like the letter was received automatically. Out of curiosity, do you mind me asking where you got an interview?

Hello! I created a GPA calculator that should get pretty close to how VMCAS calculates it. I double checked between theirs and mine to make sure the calculations are being done correctly. I'd like to think it's a little more user friendly, even if it's not perfect.

NOTE: It is view-only. Make sure you make your own copy!

Hoping this is helpful to all of yall applying this year! 🙂
For anyone reading this for next cycle, this sheet calculated my Overall and Science GPA exactly the same as VMCAS. It helps a lot if you have lots of Ws like I do, because Ws make the official excel sheet break. It saved me a lot of time since I had everything in one spot for the grade entry part of the application. Just got my app verified today! 🥳

I'll polish up my Vet School Tracker and share it here as well once that's done.

EDIT: I put the GPA calculator, tracker, and individual class calculator in the folder below.
It is view-only for privacy reasons. Make sure you make your own copy!
Google Drive Folder Here!

The VMCAS 2025 Applicant guide mentions that "experiences can be added until mid-October when access to the application is removed." Does anyone happen to know the exact date/time application access is removed or where to find it?

Hi all!

I was wondering what I should do if I don't end up taking course I listed as "planned" on VMCAS. I may not be able to take the course in question
due to scheduled conflicts with my graduation requirements.

I did not use it to match to a pre-req for any school. Would I still need to let schools know I didn't take it, or would that not matter?

Any answers/advice appreciated 🙂
