VMRCVM Applicants c/o 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks everyone for the good luck thoughts. Still nothing in my email, portal still says denied. I'm not sure what is going on.

Don't give up hope! Considering some people have already heard back about being wait listed, no news is not bad news! The system is probably just being really slow.

Thanks! I know Tech's system can be a bit wonky at times, but I am starting to feel like I'm the only one who hasn't heard yet. Anyone else with me? This is the definition of torture.

One of my really good friends is in the same boat. She hasn't gotten an email yet either way and has the same issue with the status page. You aren't the only one 🙂

That makes me feel better, thank you. Debating if I should just go to bed now since I have to be at work at 8 or continue to stay up in hope...

Right there with ya Rainheart. I haven't gotten an email or a status update. I'm checking my email every 10 minutes and these forums about as frequently for any kind of update.

It just seems so weird to me that there haven't been more people posting about their alternate status... All we can do is wait though. I'm debating calling in the morning.

And thanks to both of you for letting me know I am not alone. I am checking my email constantly, like you, and stalking the forums.

If you do call tomorrow, post here to let us know since I have to work from 8-3.

I know it's the hardest thing in the world to do in that situation, but just take a deep breath and relax! Nibble on some chocolate or sip on some wine or something, and do what you think is best. If you catch some zzz's you'll be rested for work and hopefully you'll wake up to some good news tomorrow 🙂

And I quote:

Just wanted to give those of you who haven't gotten an e-mail yet a breather: these took hours to get to everyone last year. They started rolling out circa 5pm, and some of us were still waiting at 1 o'clock the next morning.

I don't know why the system is so slow, but it is. So no worries yet. No e-mail doesn't mean no seat!

Hopefully that's encouraging.

Just got back from Illinois, long drive, all I wanted to do was sleep... and now everyone's getting their emails and I won't be able to go to bed until I hear back!

You all can imagine how I slept last night... not really at all. Nothing new as of this morning.

VA IS accepted here!! I was too excited to log on last night. After being waitlisted last year, I'm so happy!

As for those of you who haven't heard, 3 of my friends also have not recieved any email...hoping you all hear back today!

I'm so sorry! I really hope you hear something soon! :xf: for good news coming your way!

Thanks for the thanks, you guys. <3

Anything I can do to make a stressful process a little more bearable. =)

To those of you still in limbo, I'm so, so sorry. =( Hopefully you get some closure soon!

Does anyone know WHY they don't let you know your ranking until april 15th? Seems "fishy" to me. Do they "handpick" who is replaced?

Congrats to those accepted and good luck to those of you still waiting to hear back.

Let's hope they finish all the construction of the "Cage" parking lot before the fall semester begins!

That is kinda weird. Last year we could get our rankings April 1st. It was nice to know then in case you wanted to take your chances with VMRCVM versus another OOS school

Does anyone know the chances of getting off the alternate list? and do they do it by IS and OOS people, or is it just one list? Still in slight shock, I guess I was a little too confident after my interview.

Hi everyone, I don't mean to intrude but I'm sort of a lurker here. Thought this might be a good time to participate I guess. Just got accepted as an OOS and will (well, very super likely) be attending this fall! Best of luck to those who have not heard!

Alternate....
The only thing I can imagine I that they wait until April 15 because by that time they should have heard back from everyone that's accepting a seat. It is weird though...

A few lists, as far as I know. IS, WV, and OOS. OOS obviously moves quite fast. =)

I know how you feel, the same thing happened with me. Also, last year they had separate lists, so I'm guessing it will be the same this year. I know a few people got off of the alternate list, but I'm not sure exactly how many.

Congrats to everyone who got in, and hang in there people on the alternate list. I can tell you that at least one MD spot will be opening up as I am not attending 😀 Best of luck to everyone!

How is that "fishy"? Sure, it's different than last year, but it doesn't mean they can't change things.
If you have another acceptance somewhere else, congrats! You'll find out your rank after the 15th and in the scheme of things, your deposit isn't that big of a deal. Plus, even if I knew I was towards the top of a waitlist, I would never risk anything by not sending a deposit anywhere. Bad mojo with that move.
And, they are under no obligation to ever tell you your rank. That's just a nice thing to do to keep you informed.

Congrats to everyone who got in! Can't wait to see you all in the fall (sort of, I'll be in 4th year by then but I'll try to stop by 🙂 )

Fwiw, in my class a large number of people got in off the waitlist. I'm not sure the total number, but at least 4 of my good friends were accepted off of the waitlist. Additionally, they were pulling people from the waitlist as late as the week before school (one girl had to fly back from Colombia). Don't give up hope if you've been waitlisted!

Congrats and good luck to all who haven't heard yet!

I got waitlisted as well, so it looks like I am going to Mizzou!! I am so excited!! I'll find out where I am on the waitlist after April 15th just for fun.

I also am mostly a lurker and I got my notification email last night from VMRCVM. I'm in-state and I'll definitely be attending in the fall!

........can I joint the acceptance partay in a weird graduate way?

I went to VMRCVM for vet school....am currently finishing up residency in Texas....and was accepted into a swanky NIH-funded PhD/post-doc program back at VMRCVM 😀

Still have to formally accept, but unless Colorado comes through with a better offer, looks like I may well be going "home" :soexcited:

Man oh man, the Cellar had better still be there when I get there. And Lefty's for breakfast. And Gillie's. And all the little calves at the beef center in the spring who would curiously follow my dog as I walked her by the pastures around Foxridge, thinking she was such an odd-looking little calf!

RRTerp, what have they been doing with the Cage? Gah, that place was awful. And the beginning of every semester, the new undegrads with resident stickers would park all over the C/G side of the lot where the vet students have to park. So annoying. The ONLY time I have ever loved parking services for handing out tickets.

Congrats, WTF!

The Cellar is still alive and kicking, Gillie's still has the best breakfast in town - but T. Flynn's is making a good argument for itself. 😉 Also I don't know if you've ever done Boudreaux's for brunch, but they apparently caught the memo that college kids love brunch and holy crap theirs is good. And they have $3 mimosas.

The Cage has a building going up in the middle of it (yep), and we still get confused Residents... They put up a big yellow sign letting them know, so that's helped. And also they gave the Graduate students all of what used to be F/S parking. =)

Um, that building took away the entrance at the 4-way stop though, so now we all funnel in (and out) of one exit... which really only matters if you're running late in the morning or ALL of the classes get out at the same time. Which has happened a weirdly high number of times this semester...

Glad to hear you may be coming home. =)

Congrats WTF! Hope you enjoyed your time here in cstat 😛

On a side note, Gillie's is delicious! Friend who goes to VT recommended it so I tried it while I was there for interview weekend!

Can't believe I missed all the acceptances!!! Sooo happy and excited for y'all😀 Yay!!!

I'm OOS and pay a ridiculous amount of tuition but I love the program here. I've spoken to a professor who teaches at a more "prestigious" vet school in the eastern US, but who graduated VMRCVM and was told that the education here provides much more hands on learning and better prepares us for employment after graduation, sans internships and/or residencies. Just wanted to put that out there, in case other OOS applicants are looking at more than one OOS school. I'm obviously biased though.

If I can help any accepted students with info on moving or the area, PM me. I live here year round, so will be here this summer doing NIH (or Merial) supported research-maybe I'll meet WTH....
I'm not as Blacksburg knowledgeable as Hopeful (and considerably less enamored of the area, but that's just weather related), but I'll help if I can. Plus I'm non trad (read old) and married, so I have a slightly different perspective.

One more happy dance moment of celebration:banana::banana:

As far as wait lists, last year I know they moved at least 7 people off the VA IS waitlist. I heard the year before, they moved through everyone on the VA waitlist and had to start pulling people off the MD IS waitlist. So there is still definitely hope!

...Plus I'm non trad (read old) and married said:
I'm in kinda the same boat non trad and will have my girlfriend with me. Just a couple quick questions:

1) Did your spouse look/find work in the Blacksburg area?

2) I missed the dinner so i didn't have much time to talk to students and faculty but I wanted to know what some of the pros and cons of school and life are for current students.

3) Lastly, How much has tuition gone up year to year?

thanks!

Yeah, the parking situation is straight up awful and college football gamedays just makes it worse. The timing of the new construction with the expanded class sizes just means that if you're going to want find parking in the morning, you're probably going to have to make it to school much earlier. Thankfully, I'll be a 4th year soon and I'll have to get to school early most days anyways. So far, when I've had to check out my surgery patients at 7, it hasn't been so bad.

Basilnutmeg: Thank you for your information on last year's Virginia waitlist! That definitely looks good for the ISers waitlisted! There is definitely hope for y'all!!

Do you know how deep they typically pull from the OOS waitlist?

Thanks!

1- I'm one one the lucky ones whose spouse did come to Blacksburg with me AND he was able to find work, although in Roanoke. He's super modest, but honestly awesome at what he does, but still we were lucky. He's a carpenter and the construction industry isn't great now. I know a couple of people whose SO hasn't moved here yet cause they can't find work, some whose SO are working in low paying jobs completely unrelated to their careers, and other who have moved here and don't work at all. I know of even fewer whose SO have found work here or in Roanoke in their field. It's a small place, with a small economy. However, the Kroger here is 24 hours a day, I was shocked to learn recently.

2-Pros for me include
-Tech being an ag school, so lots of farm animals around and opportunities to do stuff with/to them related to school clubs
-I like the tracking curriculum because you can take focused, specialized classes in areas of interest, while still getting a well rounded vet education
-I really feel that the faculty here are fair, responsive to students and genuinely invested in my education. The administrators, too, for the most part...
-Active clubs with lots of fun wetlabs, meetings, speakers etc..
-Not a whole lot of distraction, especially if you live away from town
-Surprisingly good restaurants in terms of food and type of food available-I'm from a foodie place, so I was worried
-Great local alternatives to big box stores and plenty of local foods and products available-VA makes some great beer and wine🙂
-Outdoorsy opportunities (if it ever gets warm again)
-Hokie pride!! I even watch football now, Hokie football only though

Cons
-Not the most diverse student body, but I suspect that is true in all/most vet schools. Mostly just middle class, white, 20-something women.
-Not a whole lot of distractions, especially if you live away from town
-My husband driving 2 hrs a day to/from work
-Skunks are a serious problem for us and our dog
-If you're wild and crazy on weekends, beware, downtown is very small and you see everyone (professors, clinicians) all the time
-The weather in the winter, but if you're from a cold, snowy, windy place you'll be fine. It was nice here until January though.

3- I should know more about the financial part, but I'm not that fiscally responsible. I really don't know.

Thanks CanHardlyWait! I'm also one of the older, married one's. My wife will be moving with me and looking for a job. We are both ready for a smaller town and cannot be more excited to move to Blacksburg. We're thinking of possibly buying a place...any particular neighborhoods we should look into? I'd like to be away from the group houses and rowdy areas 🙂. When she was driving around during my interview, she thought the area just north of the airport (I think it says Airport Acres on google maps) was really cute.

On another note, I'm currently taking an anatomy class because it was a requirement for one of my other schools. Now that I've been accepted into VMRCVM, I want to drop it. I called Joyce and she said I should just email her so that she'd remove it from her list of transcripts to be expected at the end of the semester. For some reason though, I'm still nervous about dropping it, like in July they're going to be like, well you said you were taking it so now we're rescinding your offer. Or, "you were misinformed, you need to show a grade for it". I'm over-thinking this, right? I can totally pull the trigger and drop it like its hot? ...cause I have a test tonight 🙂

My fiance has to suffer through me in the fall  Although living in Texas means the games are less likely to get blacked out - aw yeah!

Luckily he doesn't care much for football (unusual for an Aggie). He just makes fun of it the whole time.

"What is this, red team versus yellow team? Like ketchup versus mustard! WHO WILL WIN THIS BATTLE OF THE CONDIMENTS?!"

I declined my admissions offer. I hope the waitlist moves quickly!

I will be declining mine as well (OOS), I hope that helps with those waiting!

Hi everyone! Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted this year! I am IS- MD and I have accepted my offer for admission here as well. Can't wait to meet you all! And for those of you still waiting to hear, or who are on the alternate list, I have my fingers crossed for you!

Awesome!!! Can't wait to meet you. Has anyone been able to join the class of 2017 facebook group yet?

Mystic, Soundofmusic, so glad y'all made it this year!!!! I remember you both from last year...you made the waiting more bearable. Thanks for that and let me know if I can help either of you in the transition this summer.

I don't know where Airport Acres is, but I live off Prices Fork in unincorporated Montgomery County (still Blacksburg) and it's a great neighborhood! Neighborhood-y but with cows, goats, alpacas and chickens in my various neighbor's yards🙂

I don't know what to tell you about anatomy except it is a hard subject that you take all of first year in vet school at VMRCVM. I have a strong anatomy background, including comparative anatomy, and still have to work at it. Coming in with a preexisting knowledge base is advisable. But if you can't stand it- drop it and enjoy your last remaining months of freedom. Vet school ain't no joke, it's hard **** and a lot of work.
