Waitlist c/o 2023

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Guess I'll update everyone. Now waitlisted at a 4th school. That makes it LSU, KS, WesternU and MN. I am so frustrated. It seems like I'm so close but just not good enough to get accepted. I'm happy I haven't been rejected from anywhere after an interview and I know it's not over until it's over but ugh I want this so bad and it's hard to keep waiting. Anyways, I should be hearing from UI and LMU soon, so I might be back with a 5th waitlist in a couple weeks, but hopefully not lol
Waitlist at school #5 Illinois, still hopeful and can't wait for April!

Anyone else waitlisted from UGA? They don’t tell me where I am on the waitlist. Does anyone know about how many ppl schools typically put on the waitlist?

I am OOS waitlisted at Iowa, VMCVM, and Illinois! Hoping to get pulled off of one!

i also have a question. i know it might depend on the school, but if you are accepted off the waitlist, can you defer the acceptance for a year?

Good luck Illinois waitlist people! My friend is an alternate and will be giving up her spot to go to another school, so I hope this moves everyone up a bit 🙂

Waitlisted NCSU and VMCVM OOS and accepted OOS to UGA and OKSU but technically on the waitlist for a contract seat so we’ll see what happens. Hoping to hear back some more before April so I don’t have to go changing my mind and forfeiting deposits

I am currently waitlisted for OOS WSU (unranked) and #77 OOS for UMN (Minnesota), which are my top two picks. I got accepted into Illinois but am waiting in hopes of hearing back from WSU or UMN. I will send Illinois the official acceptance once April comes.

Anyone know how the UMN waitlist is going?

Unclear, I know people on the UMN 2023 thread said they go into the 20-30s for the OOS, but living expenses seems to be a big drawback for people. I'm in the same boat, going to send my deposit but keep watching the MN waitlist.

Does anyone know how the illinois waitlist went last year? I'm trying to search in previous threads but coming up short..
@SkiOtter is the only person from SDN I can think of that got pulled off last year

I was waitlisted IS last cycle. Didn’t get in. Not bitter.

There’s someone else OOS on the 2022 Illinois thread who got pulled the same day as me too. And I think I’ve heard of one other person? But not positive about that.

Hi! Cant speak for UMN but WSU wont pull any OOS people off the waitlist until after April 15th.

Do you know typically how many people get off the out of state waitlist for WSU? I'm waitlisted as well.
I dont. I know typically we dont have a ton of movement overall compared to other schools with the pullman campus seeing less movement than the Logan. It does move some though. You can always contact stacy and she can give you more accurate numbers. Or you can look on the class stats page and see the number of offers for nonresidents vs final acceptances to get a better idea

Yeah I had a file review with Dr. Talcott but she won't give out rank numbers so I'm not sure where I stand and I'm on both Pullman and Logan's list now, whereas before I was just on Pullman's but I asked for a preference for Pullman so hopefully I might move up in both lists. I'm so worried though

I know unranked waitslists are frustrating. I wish you all the luck though!

Thanks! I'm just worried if you say the waitlist doesn't move as much, then I might not have that much of a chance and I already go to WSU so it really would be so beneficial to stay!

I keep trying to tell myself that! I just see people post on here all the time about never getting off waitlists and having to apply again (which I totally would do) so I'm going to be anxious all the way up until I get a call from someone... if I ever do.
I feel you 🙁 I feel the exact same way

I wish you all the best luck!

Does anyone know if you say yes to a school, will you be removed from any waitlists?

Not unless you tell the other schools to remove you. The schools do not communicate with each other. You can accept a seat somewhere before the deadline or off the waitlist after the deadline and keep hoping a different (lol and cheaper) school calls you and then accept there.

I’m also waitlisted at UGA IS. Wish we knew our standing

I am OOS waitlisted for Louisiana State, Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, and U of Tennessee.

Jeez that's tough, but it sounds like you're doing something right to be considered at that many schools!

Statistically I would think you have a pretty good shot this year; I know some individual OOS waitlists don't move much some years, but the odds of your four programs having a stagnant OOS waitlist in the same year I have to believe are pretty low!

Hopefully you'll have some decisions to make come April 15 when the list starts moving. Best of luck to you!

On the OOS waitlist for Oregon State University, Oklahoma State University, Louisiana State University, and University of Tennessee. What are the odds?

I am OOS waitlist at Mississippi State (ranked #1), OOS waitlist at Auburn, and IS waitlist at Tennessee. Does anyone know how much the instate list usually moves for TN?

I have already started planning for a gap year. I am applying for veterinary internships at zoos. I think what held me back from getting accepted was my age since I am only 20. I also did not have many experience hours (only 400). During one interview, they made a comment about how young I was.

If you haven't done file reviews I would highly encourage it instead of just assuming. Many of my classmates were 20 when they entered so age shouldn't have played a factor- I think I saw someone in here get into somewhere at 19. If anything lack of hours and other factors such as interview skills, essays, and lors etc should have been your determining factors.

I am also 20, and graduating undergrad in 3 years! Thankfully I was accepted to Missouri, and I’m very optimistic to get off Mississippi’s waitlist! My interviewers also seemed skeptical of my age.

Jeez, you guys are making me feel old! I spent too long deciding what I wanted to be when I grew up haha!

I knew towards the end of high school. But my vet I work for now was in his junior year of undergrad sitting in the back of a physics lecture when this girl came in with her service dog and she mentioned at some point that she was going to vet school the next year. He was just kind of like “huh. I guess I’ll do that too.” There are a surprising number of people who didn’t have this career as a lifelong passion. Even a lot of people who switch into it after having fulfilling careers through their 30’s. Some even in their 40’s.

Mine was more that I spent several years trying to convince myself that I wanted to do something that involved a little less student debt! But I guess I should have taken the fact that I kept shadowing vets even when I was looking at other careers as a sign.

I don’t even have debt yet and I’m already kept up at night because of it. But I know for a fact that I can’t see myself doing anything else, and sounds like you feel that way too.

Yep. It is at least reassuring knowing that this is what I want to pursue!

What are everyone's plans if they do not get accepted off of their waitlists? I need ideas for a backup plan. I would love to stay at my current job working as a veterinary technician, but it won't pay enough to support myself. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I'm planning on working at a clinic to make money since I'm graduating this semester and need to pay off my student loans six months after I graduate while also trying to gain more shadowing experience for this year's application!

Keep in mind that, if you want, you can enroll in income based repayment. For a lot of people working lower paying jobs, that payment can be as low as $0 a month. Yes, you accrue interest in that time, but you won’t have to worry about your credit taking a hit or spending all of your savings on loan repayment.

Oh, really? How does that work? I have both federal from FAFSA and private loans that I've taken out but I've been paying my private loans about $25 a month since freshman year for each of the private loans I've taken out for each year of undergrad

For private loans you’d have to see if they offer any sort of income based repayment options. I haven’t taken out any private loans so I have no idea. But for FAFSA I remember setting up my payment plan during exit counseling. You can also go to the payment site (cornerstone) and on the home screen it says “lower your payment.” So from there you can look into different options. Each should tell you what your payment will be, what the repayment period will be, and if any amount of debt will be forgiven. Also keep in mind that if you decide to stick with an income based repayment option until your balance is forgiven, you’ll need to pay a lump sum at the end for taxes because that forgiven amount is seen as income. So if you have $100,000 forgiven, it’s as if you made an extra $100,000 that year in income and you’re taxed accordingly.

Oh, wow. Okay, I'll look into that and do more research. Was your exit counseling through your school or on their website.

It was through FAFSA itself I believe. It usually is done close to graduation. It’s mostly the same questions as entrance counseling, where you fill in numbers to make sure you’re actually reading and paying attention. They ask things like “who do you contact if XYZ thing happens?” And then you answer “my student loan officer” or whatever. And then towards the end you get to select which payment option you want.
