*~*WAMC (what are my chances?) Megathread*~*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you for responding, and that makes me feel a lot better. Would you suggest I get some background in pharmacy as well? Such as at least getting my pharm tech certification?

It would help. But time is not really on your side at this point. It won't hurt you if you don't have it. Alot of my classmates have 0 pharm experience. Don't worry about it. Good luck!

Pcat is pretty low.. Despite your GPA. I would say at least 60. You should apply to some candidate schools just in case.

Thanks, i hope so, but right now I'm not totally sure on my top choice yet. haha I'd love to go to Colorado cause i enjoy being outside and have always enjoyed going to Colorado for camping and skiing. But i go to University of Oklahoma and going to their pharm school will be equally great. Just need to get my LORs all turned in within the next month hopefully.

Wont taking it over after september be too late for admission for Fall 2014?

Depends in schools deadline. A lot aren't due untill feb or march.

+1.

You are applying to 18 schools which will end up costing a boatload of money. It would be best to have the best possible stats you can achieve rather than waste that money because you are in a rush. There is a chance that you will get at least a couple interviews with your 2 stats at the moment, but I can only imagine that they won't be your top choices.

Nothing is impossible, but it is going to be a bit of an uphill battle for you. You have great extracurriculars but I don't know if that's going to be enough to overlook the GPA. I would retake the PCAT and aim for the 80s to 90s. I would also describe in your personal statement why the low GPA. Do so briefly, and don't spend three paragraphs on it. Aside from that, make sure you have strong lors and one hell of a personal statement. Lastly, APPLY EARLY! Best of luck to you and keep us updated on the situation

thanks guys, taking it over for the second time next month. I hope this third time will be what i need

Similar situation to you CanisMajoris. I was a business major for 3 years switched to pre-pharm/chemistry, 2.8 gpa, 1 year pharmacy experience, but I got an 89 on PCAT which I think helped me to get my interview at Samford coming up on October 26. So yeah, I think you got a good shot at Samford if you hurry and get the PCAT taken

You're obviously golden everywhere, just be sure to be prepared for the interview by finding what they ask typically on here they usually use the same questions. My number one puts a lot of weight on the interview the admissions director said it is what decides whether you're accepted or not if you get the interview. Maybe practice with friends who are applying or an advisor. You should be fine though, good luck!

In regards to your research, where in pharmcas did you mention that? I have a pretty good research topic i would like to add as well. The publication might come too late to add to my application but i'd like to at least inform them of my research. Do you think I should add shadowing of a nurse? I've followed my mom around her hospital rotations before :)...where should I add that? It isnt really an "organization".

Good (communication major)

Most worried about my biology score on the PCAT and the fact that I'll will be receiving a Bachelor's of Arts degree instead of science (I decided to get into pharmacy after completing a decent amount of credits for my communication degree, so I decided to just go the prerequisite route.)

My GPA isn't that great but I transferred from a school of 2,000 to a school of 60,000 my sophomore year. So I had a bit of a hard time adjusting. I also have a mild to moderate hearing loss and have dealt with that my whole life. Are there any schools I should apply to that would better my chance of getting in? I am graduating with a degree in biology and a minor in chem. Oh and I consistently worked 2 jobs throughout my college career. At one point I was working 3 jobs (30-40) hrs a week and going to school full time. I did this to pay for my tuition, also partly due to a low GPA.

I think is good, don't know if it is good enough to pharmacy school though, one of my friend who is great at English proofread for me.
I am graduating this December with major in biology and minor in chemistry, I know my GPA is not that great, but I hope my PCAT score can do some good about it. So what's my chance to get in a pharmacy school in Texas? I really wanna stay in Texas! My top choice is Texas Tech, what's my chance?

dude... whiskey tango foxtrot? excuse my hidden language but I dont understand why you are even asking. you should apply Med school or Dental school too lol

Planning to e-submit within the next week or two. Was Cornell '09 Chem/English major. Spent 4 years working in communications after graduation now wanted to touch my science roots and get back to professional school.

Why so many schools? Your stats are impressive, you'll get in just about anywhere.

I would stick to instate schools for tuition sake and don't apply to private schools. You should get plenty of interviews.

Thanks Pharmerjohn and Jibby. I guess I couldn't really decide where exactly I wanted to be geographically and looked at a lot of schools around the nation because I had a lot of time to.

I am currently deciding where to list my residence as on my app... I live in NYC and my dad has a place in FL so I could use either of those for in-state tuition. UF appeals to me, especially the St. Pete campus since it's close to my dad's place in Sarasota but I am worried about not being "intellectually challenged" down there. I've spent the past 4 years in NYC and would probably like to leave here. The only in-state school in NY is Buffalo and I already spent 4 years in Ithaca so I don't know if I want to go through crazy winters again though the school is very strong.

The UC's seem pretty cheap even for nonresidents. UCSD and UCSF are kind of my dream skoolz. If I could find a residence to list in CA, that could save me 8k or so a year. I just don't knowww. Probably can eliminate all the TX schools and the non-NY, non-CA, non-FL ones too. Except for Hawaii, lol, because that could be so fun.

UF is an awesome school and make the best pharmacists in Florida if not the nation. ;) I may be biased. But UF is the best. Instate tuition is not too bad either.

Are all the campuses good or only the Gainesville one? I'd be down to chill on St. Pete for 4 years B)

Statistically they are all even as far as test grades and stuff like that. All campuses are in great cities with ample opportunities for resources. I attend the Orlando campus. Which is a brand new building dedicated to research and academia. We are a research 1 school which is great by itself if that's what your into. No matter what campus your at you have equal opportunity to do as any other students. On a side note all employers I have ever spoke to would hire UF grads before any other schools in florida and its good to be a gator.

But whatever you choose I wish you the best of luck.

I guess I am not that confidence because my lack of ECs, I only work in a restaurant for six years, and volunteer in outpatient for over two month and that's it. Due to personal reason I didn't have time to participate in any school organization or anything like that, I saw many applicants are present of several school organization, that makes my nervous, I don't know how much ECs count for the overall application:scared:

Hello.. hoping anyone can help me out. Feeling pretty anxious.

Average to above average: I think my statement was pretty well written and effective.

a. Schools you are applying to
Almost everywhere in California: UCSF, UCSD, USC, UOP, Western

b. Overall GPA
3.2

c. Math/Science GPA
3.65
(I took Calc and Stats at my undergrad, got C- and C+ respectively. I wanted to retake both, but I may only be able to repeat calculus. But the science part is 4.0)

d. GPA in last one or two school years
4.0
(Did not major in any kind of bio/science at my undergrad, nor did I try very hard in undergrad. But am doing the whole turning-my-life-around bit and have been taking all the science prereq's at a CC. ...Which is why my overall is so bad.)

e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite)
Did not take; am applying only in CA anyways.

f. Pharmacy experience obtained
Volunteering, trying to get pharm tech work right now

g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary)
Finishing up secondaries. Already submitted for UOP and USC though since they're tiered/rolling admissions.

1 LOR from supervisor at my clinic
1 LOR from a pharmacist friend

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience
I volunteered at a free clinic for ~6 months, 115 hrs for both their dispensary and behavioral health departments.
Also was part of my CC's Pre-Health Club; left because I moved and am currently at a different CC.

j. Self-perception of interview skills
Pretty good. I like to think at least.

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality
I'm a good writer, but I don't typically write about myself. I hope I was able to walk that fine line of bragging about myself yet being humble at the same time.

Hey I an African American student from the south side of Chicago. I don't have the best Verbal abilities as shown by my PCAT scores. I have improved a great amount since attending purdue but I am worried that my scores and my inferior verbal ability will inhibit me from even getting an interview. I can communicate at an ok level now but I am still inferior to many of the other applicants.

I just want to know If you thought that I still had a chance to get into UIC COP with my poor educational background.

Grades Chem major: I will have completed three years of my chemistry degree by spring 2014.
At Purdue University, I received A's in all pre-pharmacy coursework except Organic Chemistry 1 lab (C) and Physics 1(B+).

I worked a summer as a CNA in a nursing home. I also worked a summer as sterilization assistant in a dental clinic

I work as a Chem/Bio tutor at Purdue.

I have been a supplemental instructor for Organic 1(once in the Fall and once in the summer), Organic 2 this past summer, gen chem 115 and 116, I have even been the S.I. in A&P 1.

I am the president of the chem/physics club.

I volunteer at random events at the YMCA on the west side of Chicago. I also volunteer as a high school and middle school tutor in Gary Indiana at salvation army.

I have shadowed 1 5 hours at an independent pharmacy, and one 8 hour shift in a clinical pharmacy setting.

My cumulative G.p.a is 3.68, Prepharm gpa 3.74, math science gpa 3.69.

Pcat scores: Biology 89, Verbal 18, Reading 26, Chemistry 93, Quantitative 72, Writing 3(average 3.4 i believe).

Please let me know if it is till possible for me to get an interview at UIC COP with the above stats.

Your grades are high, so I think you have a very good chance if the school doesn't have cutoffs for each section of the PCAT.

I have a bachelors degree in Chemistry, but my accumulative is below a 2.5
I recently took the PCAT and got a composite of 82...How tangible are my chances of getting into Pharmacy school?

Your situation is almost identical to mine. Bachelor's degree with 2.6 gpa (strong upward trend of 4.0 within last 60 units) and 84 PCAT. I'm retaking mine in a month for a better score. I also have 4 years certified tech experience, hospital experience, and a ton of volunteering and leadership experience. Sorry I can't answer your question, because I am still waiting for my transcript to be received by Pharmcas before I submit. I probably won't hear back from the schools for a while, but I will update if I do. If it's any consolation, there are others on the same boat as you, so join the club. :D Oh, and try to stay positive, as there's no point crying over spilt milk. Good luck! :)

Do you have anything else to bring to the plate regarding admissions; Pharmacy experience, work experience, extracurriculars?

In addition, what is your PCAT subsection score breakdown?

With a GPA below 2.5, you have some work to do since that doesn't reach the minimum GPA cutoff for most schools.

Chemguy79 is right. I forgot to tell you that you'll need to get your gpa up above 2.5 to have a chance, as they'll pretty much reject you off the bat because you don't meet the minimum. Consider taking classes to bring it up. It won't be much of a jump, as you have so many units weighing you down, but I'm sure it will get you over the 2.5 cutoff if you get enough A's to pull in the upward direction. Good luck!
