William Carey University (WCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do any of the current students have access to this year's match list? I'm interested in some competitive specialties and given that this is the first year for WCUCOM's match, I want to see what kind of competitive specialties students here match in.
I do not have the complete match list--only the numbers. I do know that there were placements in family, derm, radiology, surg, emergency, and internal for a fact. That is by no means a complete list, just from what I have heard from the match.

What is the remediation/failure policy at WCU?
I am not positive how it all works to be quite honest. I believe it is if there is one class then there is a remediation process during the break and an exam to continue on with your class. If there is more than one failure, I believe you can start again the next year. Once again, I am not positive on the policy. There is a committee that decides a lot of your fate if you happen to be in that position.

Thanks for that response! Do you have any ideas as to why (or maybe even when) WCUCOM hasn't released more information publicly about the match list? Hear me out for a second...this is the first year with a match list, so prospective students obviously want to see that the school matches into competitive fields before committing to the school over other schools. To me, it just makes sense to release these lists if they have good news to report to help students understand the strength of the school. Case in point: RVUCOM received tons of flack for being a for-profit school. They released all their match lists since their graduating class, and much of the discussion of a potentially inferior education coming from a for-profit school or the potential placement in "leftover" residencies died down. If the WCUCOM isn't willing to release the list publicly, can you give me an idea of who I should e-mail to have a look at the list?

Thanks again!

I think WCUCOM is still waiting on the MD Match List which is released later in March. By then, we should be able to see the full match list of the school. And there are many students who are doing either only MD match program and both DO and MD. We can wait ;D

Not a poster, but a devoted reader/checker. Interview in two weeks and I can't be more excited. I'm from out of state, so I'm a little nervous but I have quite a bit of family that live in the gulf region. The silence on this forum is slightly unnerving. But, I'm still excited to interview here.

Yup, too quiet...

Don't know if it's a good or a bad sign, I've still got a month to go until my interview.
My interview group was very small (5people) on that day. If you're invited for an interview, that means they really want you there 😀. Good luck!

The interview was very laid back, panel style. I felt very welcome when I got there. The students are down to earth and make sure you bring lots of questions. Good luck!

Fabulous. Thanks. Also, I believe the match list is released tomorrow, but don't quote me.

Interviewing in two weeks also- In state.
"The students are down to earth and make sure you bring lots of questions"- Can you clarify that sentence?
If you have questions, there'll be MS1 students at lunch hanging around at the tables. I even asked them about the interview questions and the school's pros and cons. I like how open they were. It's even better if you're an in state applicant. I'm from Texas! Just be yourself 🙂

ummmm...... Match percentage?????

I don't normally post, but I wanted to add a little on my overall experience and impression with WCUCOM.

I agree with miss sassy and a few others about the interview day and process. During our pre interview group meeting, it was made very clear that if we received in II it was because they genuinely wanted us there. Just relax and you will be fine; it was the least pressure I felt at any interview. The staff and students were some of the friendliest people I have ever met. It seems as though they are willing to do anything it takes to make you successful in med school and beyond. After I was accepted, I withdrew from two upcoming interviews at some of the larger schools and declined my existing acceptance at another school. WCU just felt like home.

Since my acceptance in January, I have heard from several students in the welcoming committee as well as the administration just making sure everything is going well. All said, I am happy with my choice to attend WCU.

I hope this helps those with pending interviews. I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

Just to shed some light on the match since people are waiting....4th year from WCU here. I've asked about the compiled list, hopefully we'll get it next week.

I know we've had multiple surgery, multiple ER, I'm hearing a decent number of IM, FM, Peds, I know of at least 4 Ob/Gyn, at least 3 anesthesiology- all ACGME (of which I'm one!!), a few neurology, i know of 3 psychiatry, PM&R, some transitional years in both AOA/ACGME.

This is by no means, obviously, a full list yet, but it should at least give everyone some idea of how we're matching.

Thanks a lot for sharing gasman2014!!! This is exciting news and I'm very excited for you and your class. When I interviewed in Feb, the school announced that 93% matched but I had no idea how it'd turn out on match day. My trust for wcu really grows each day ;D
CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2014!!!

To all current WCUCOM students, please share your thoughts about the school as well as the match results if you can. We applicants are following this thread daily but it just seems very quiet for some reason ! 😉

I'll tell you all, I was actually accepted to quite a few D.O. schools, and I'm choosing William Carey b/c they seem to have their act together, especially for a relatively new school. There are things I don't love, like mandatory attendance, graded 1st and 2nd year classes, and a dress code. However, the people (both students and faculty) seem really chill, and I think I will be happy there. Hattiesburg was also surprisingly nice, and the idea of training physicians who want to work in the Gulf Coast is right up my alley! 🙂

Lately y'all have been a little stir crazy haha. I PROMISE that when we have the numbers & stats that y'all will be able to access them as well 🙂 The match process is a process so be patient. As for those who have received acceptances, congrats!! We all look forward to seeing you at Acceptance Day Weekend & in the Fall!!

Congratulations for the First Graduating Class!!!! Wonderful stats.
Interested to know which programs they matched.,Specifically internal medicine... Thanks

Great match results, especially since it is above the national average.

I am curious how the school is helping the 3 students who did not match at all?

And would like to know How many got in AOA and how many are in ACGME programs?

The first class size was 100 correct?

There is a whole staff dedicated to these students. I am not sure what exactly the process is, but I know there are people working with those students.

And would like to know How many got in AOA and how many are in ACGME programs?

I am not sure what the stats are for that.

No idea. Sorry! Maybe a fourth year could answer that question.

Correct me if i'm wrong. There are several MBS students too?

Yup, too quiet...

Don't know if it's a good or a bad sign, I've still got a month to go until my interview.
I have an interview 5/5. Hope they have a spot left by then. Does anyone else an interview that late?

Can someone explain "Traditional Rotating Internship" please? Does that mean their specialties require an extra year of residency before the actual specialties start?

I'm happy to see the excellent match results, and all the positive feedback!

I'm currently a senior Biology major a WCU; I applied for WCUCOM this year, but assumed it wasn't going to happen this year because I never received a secondary. I got a chance a couple of months ago to speak with Dr. Weir, who was so helpful. He actually took the time to pull my file, sit down and go over everything with me one-on-one. He was a bit concerned about my GPA (I'm trying to overcome a few disastrous undergrad classes from my early 20's, and I was currently a little below their "ideal" cut-off point) and made some suggestions on how to improve myself for next year's application.

I turned in my application for the MBS program last week, and received acceptance yesterday. Apparently when they pulled my file to retrieve my supplementary material they decided to take a second look...my 4.0 last trimester must have been enough to pull my overall GPA up just enough, because I also received a WCUCOM secondary application yesterday!

I know it is just one more step in the process, but at least now I know either way you guys will be seeing my happy face around WCUCOM next year.

I also received a secondary application yesterday. I'm very surprised bc I applied very late. This is the only medical school that I have applied to. :scared:

This is to graduating class. Really appreciate if someone could post the programs they've matched. Which state and what program they've matched. Thank you!!

It is posted above the programs that they have entered. They did not tell us each of the out-of-state residencies. As for the in-state residencies, the programs include the following:

* 6 in the new FM program in Meridan

* 5 at UMMC

o 1 EM, 1 anesthesia, 1 peds, 1 FM, 1 Med/peds

* 4 in IM in Corinth

* 3 in FM at Forrest General

* 2 in FM at Tupelo

According to the news, 90% of the graduates are doing out-of-state residency programs.

This is false. 23% of the graduates are placed in MS residencies. 56% of the graduates are placed in Gulf South residencies.

Keep in mind, we are the SECOND medical school in MS and the FIRST osteopathic medical school in MS. There is not a large abundance of AOA residencies in MS, but this is increasing yearly.

I interviewed at William Carey last week and Dr. Weir said that the committee would make a decision today, but I haven't received a phone call or email.

Does anyone know long do they usually take to let you know about their decision?

Dr. Weir usually calls on the day of but give them a couple days. Maybe it's really busy during this time of the cycle.
