William Carey University (WCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got the secondary this morning! However, after scouring the past threads on this school I am a little nervous about filling it out. I don't think it's much of a secret that WCU is not exactly the highest quality medical school....especially if you are looking at specializing! Seems to be primary care or bust, and I didn't like how a full ten percent of the class last match got stuck in a traditional rotating internship (aka they didn't match anywhere else). Fill out this secondary at your own caution!!

Umm... As a student at Carey and a poster on last years thread I am going to have to completely disagree with everything you just said. It just isnt true and I am not sure where you got your info. If you did come across some confusing info I would be happy to clear it up or if you would like to weigh out some of the pros and cons of Carey. Primary care or bust or getting stuck in an internships are just not a reality here.

In that case, what are the big pros and cons of the school in your opinion? Also, my match information comes from the match list posted on last years thread. If you have a more accurate list, as you say you do, please list it as well with it's source.

Individual effort and personal interest determines where an individual goes for residency. People who apply to this school are, typically, from either Texas or Mississippi (the two largest representations in our class with Louisiana closely behind) and that speaks volumes of where people want to take residency spots. So, you're right. A lot of people go into primary care from here, but those people either wanted to do that or didn't study and synthesize the materiel well enough from their first two years to get into a more "competitive" specialty. At the end of the day, though, they have a DO degree and can practice medicine in the United States. Not to mention that our tuition is cheaper than most private DO schools so we save a lot of money. This school will end up giving you the same end result as any DO school in the country, and no one should feel that their education, if matriculated here, would be any less than anywhere else.

Pros: Its a med school, some of the best faculty in the DO world, year to year things are changing to improve the school, brand new school so your opinion makes a difference, medium town Mississippi means not to many distractions but enough when you need it, most of the faculty care about your success to the point they will work extra hours to help you, the second years care about your success, and the community cares about your success.

Cons: the first year is very very difficult, it is uncommon that a professor teaches to the boards, its a new school things are changing so advice doesnt always translate, there are a ton of hurdles to jump, its the south so you better like it hot... There are a few others personal to me and some I have heard about but cant confirm or deny.
I am sure both pros and cons can be found in many schools not just Carey but one thing that stands out is how much everyone care if you do well or not. That was some thing i did not see at any other school.

In regards to your match data are you looking at AOA, ACGME or military? Did you consider all 3? Did you factor in the interests of the applicants? Did you account for the region they applied to?
You see there are a ton of factors to think about when it comes to residency placement besides competitiveness. It isnt a very reliable way to weigh out if you should apply to a school.
At this stage you should be thinking about your probability of acceptance into a said school, if you like the region the school is in, prep for boards... That sort of stuff.

Received my secondary on Friday. Submitted it by mail today. I don't have the best stats, but hopefully my extracurriculars take some attention away from that. I can't honestly say that I know too much about this school, but I do really love the idea of being in a smaller medical class.

Thanks, @WorldChanger36 for being so active in this thread and in the previous year's thread. I've gotten a lot of helpful info from reading these boards.

Good luck to everybody else applying as well. Hoping to see some love from WCUCOM.

Just got a II 🙂. Now to figure out how to get there ...

If you can fly into the Laurel Airport, it's really close to here; probably a little more expensive, too. New Orleans is good, but it's an hour and a half away.

Thanks, I will probably go with the cheapest option so Looks like New Orleans for now if the difference in tickets is a lot

Just called them today asking why I didnt get a secondary. They told me I should have 3.5scigpa and 27 mcat.

What state are you from? I am from Texas and have slightly lower stats than that and I got a secondary

You should email the director or something or make sure the info was correct

Edit: or what he said below

Well they typically pull students from states around Texas and the Mississippi regions. It may be possible that if you aren't from these areas, they make it more competitive. That's just a thought.

I have a 3.37 science and a 25 mcat
It's in their mission statement to "take students from the Gulf South region" but there are, obviously, exceptions. One of my fellow classmates this year, for instance, is from Utah. Him and I interviewed on the same day and both got in; I'm from Texas, by the way. We have students from Minnesota and Chicago, but they are definitely in the minority. Almost 50% of our class is either from Mississippi or Texas if that tells you anything. Not only that, but it gets more competitive with grades every year! I had a 3.57 cGPA, 3.87 sGPA, and a 24 MCAT with over 5,000 volunteer hours and hospital work that I had been doing for 10 years. Not the best MCAT, but I had something that stood out for me AND I was from a Gulf South state. Good luck and feel free to pm me with any questions you have! That goes for anyone on here. It may take time to respond since we have our second exam on Friday, but I promise to be as useful as I can be.

Got the secondary yesterday! However I don't know when I'll be able to send it in. Does anyone know what "late" is like for this school?

There can be multiple reasons why you did not receive a secondary outside of grades and area. Dont call or email the school freaking out because you didnt get one. They dont send them out to all applicants. If you dont get one after a month and a half post primary you most likely wont get one because you have been rejected presecondary. Aint nobody got time to review secondaries apps of applicants they have no interest in.

Just canceled my interview here since I was accepted elsewhere. Good luck to other applicants, hope you get my interview spot.

Also cancelled my interview here. Good luck to those applying!

OMS-2 here, I'll try to answer what questions I can.

Did WCU ever release a match list or board scores from last year?

Not yet. I'm working with the office that handles that so I can get it put out here for everyone. We've had some turnover in that office, so the new Dean and staff are trying to get settled in.

II! Anyone knows the post interview acceptance rate?

Roughly 75 percent. They're pretty selective at each step of the process. Interview groups are 5-10, and for my class (2018), the majority, if not all, of each group got accepted.

Did anybody else get really excited when they got their secondary application fee receipt in the mail? Definitely thought it was going to be something better than that! Also to all of the current students on here, I see bias for MS and TX.. I guess its a good sign then if I got a secondary and I'm from GA?

Question! Do you have to send their secondary application via mail or can you fax it?! They also require a picture, does it have to be a legitimate picture printed from Kinkos or can you just print a small picture from your printer?

I would call, but im at work.

The interview date they gave you in the email is the earliest available date for an interview, right? You can't move up to an earlier date right?

I think you can change it when you call to confirm an interview. I'm not 100% sure, but that would be logical.

When did those of you with II receive your payment receipt in the mail? I'm trying to feel out the timeline.

If something is available then I don't see why you couldn't.
I guess what I'm asking is that the interview date they give you is the earliest available one by default right?

Probably, but remember that some people get accepted early and spots will open up.

Hey everybody just a heads up we are entering our first major testing block. It is an OPP exam on tuesday, anatomy that next monday and Integrated Dr.PHiB the monday after that. If you have question for us OMS1s please be patient but we have to look out for number one first. Hopefully a second year maybe able to answer an other question while we are occupied.

Anyone interviewing on 9/25? I'm from out of state and will be flying in the night before.

II email today, for Oct. 2. I have an interview next week at BCOM so it'll be interesting to compare

I received my receipt in the mail about a week ago

Yep, lol HEB. I was thinking driving but that's almost 8 hrs. Spirit flies to New Orleans for like 30-50 bucks it looks like though... That's a 2hr rental drive from New Orleans, not sure yet
Lucky you can rent. I'm 20 so they won't let me rent a car...gotta spend the extra money for a cab. 🙁

Well I'm 23, 24 next week, so I'll probably pay an extra fee.. What day are you going?
I'm going on the 24th for a 25th interview from DFW to Jackson and then drive down to Hattiesburg. If anyone on this page wants to split a cab or something, let me know!!!

I'm headed from DFW, flying to Jackson, then renting a car to drive down 1.5 hrs.
Hey! That is pretty much my exact plan other than renting a car. I was planning on taking a cab...I'd be open to coordinating though if you would like!
