William Carey University (WCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

Hey guys, if I never received a secondary invite, is it safe to assume that I got screened out?
I'm not sure. I received mine pretty quickly, but I hear they screen pretty thoroughly.

Never received a secondary either with competitive stats and that was over two months ago
Hey guys, if I never received a secondary invite, is it safe to assume that I got screened out?

Both of you as I stated multiple times, it is very likely you were however in order to rule out an error in the system you need to call and confirm. They will either tell you good news or that you are still under review, they wont openly tell you you were rejected iver the phone

My app should be reviewed this week! Could anyone give some insight into my chances with a 503 3.55, 3.32sgpa (strong upward trend) and ignoring ECs? I would really love to interview here!
I don't know what a 503 translates to, but those are very close to my stats (with 29 MCAT). I'm set to interview early January. Good luck!

503 is about test line average so about a 26 in old MCAT standards

Based off what some admissions directors told me in person and on the phone, they're going off percentiles for the exam. One director told me my score translated to at least a 27 and was more in the 27/28 range. It could be different at other schools but this is what I was personally told!

I got a receipt for my money order so that's good but that's it so far

Can someone comment on the strengths of the rotation sites? Where are the core "hub" sites? Are they all in rural MS and AL?

They're changing for this year. We lost most of the AL ones when ACOM opened up.

Current ones we have:
Mississippi:
Pine Belt (Hattiesburg/Laurel and surrounding area)
Gulf Coast (Biloxi/Gulfport/Pascagoula)
Keesler AFB (Military Only)
Delta (Greenville/Cleveland/Tutwiler)
McComb
Capital Region (Jackson and Suburbs)
Corinth and Tupelo require applications

Louisiana: (both sites require an application)
East Louisiana: Bogalusa, Slidell, Metairie, Lacombe
West Louisiana: Lafayette, Lake Charles

Alabama: Centreville (requires application)

I can only speculate on the strengths of the various sites. My friends that are at McComb are liking it, and are getting to see a lot of varied pathology and procedures. Some that have gone to the Delta have really enjoyed it, there's a lot of truly sick people and the medical students get a lot of practice.

Thanks sir! It's what I wanted.

My review of WCUCOM. If you need more detail than what i give here or you have questions, pm me.
So i passed with a B average so those peeps out there that are gonna disagree and say i just failed out can kick rocks.
Location: Carey is in po dunk Mississippi, so not much going on. Its quiet and has a few great places to eat and drink. Outside of that if you are not ready for the deep deep political south you are in for it. People here are very religious, some what old school in thinking and sexism is a big deal, although most people just brush it off.
Technology: Hands down, it doesnt work. Screen casts often are not uploaded or are inaudible, the mic cuts out at least 10 times a lecture, they have these patient simulators that nobody can use, quiz and test software often fails and the common solution is oh well guess you fail some how this is your fault, and the IT department is rarely able to help. It is a serious problem for everybody.
Education: Well its a brand new school, in the deep south, lectures can go from ok to WTF just happened. The anatomy department is amazing. I mean amazing... These guys got it and deliver things pretty good. However it is very hit and miss with other lectures often leaving us very confused and frustrated. Majority of teaching is very old school thinking and misses a lot of learning opportunities.
Policy: Attendance is mandatory, you have to wear a dorky scrub top, ladies you have to cut your nails off to very short lengths ( guys do too), if you are an out spoken person you better stow it, need to talk to your professor you have to go through a student rep ( this isnt so bad after you get used to it). There were other things that other people complained about ( lab cleanliness, test downloads). All that being said I was able to get around or deal and I think anybody reading this can too. However i do have to be the voice for my classmates and say many feel that if the mandatory attendance was loosened especially around exams our grades would be higher.
Board prep: The school pays for combank and comsaes are required outside of that there isnt much prep. Courses are not taught to the boards. You can do very well in classes and not do well on the boards. This is a very serious problem that has really not been addressed to much of the student body's satisfaction nor does it seem like there is EVER going to be any improvement in this. If you do come to this school be very ready for this and plan way ahead for your board prep because it is on you.
Moral: Its pretty low. We get talked down to weekly, just to have somebody tell us we are the best class yet. Confusing. We are looking at least 10 people that will have to remediate something. At least 2 so far may have to repeat the year. This whole semester felt like a fight for our lives. However most of us made it and at least 90 percent will move on to graduate.
Research: Its a DO school... Aint nobody got time for that. If you want research MD school or bust or do it before you come.
Overall: This school is brand new and having serious growing pains. Things are not easy here if you want to survive you are going to work insanely hard just to pass. Forget As, Cs get degrees and take a serious amount of work to get. If you are a strong applicant with multiple offers, this isnt the place for you. However if you are coming out of a masters program and arent getting much love we welcome you if you are gonna do the work.

So when you are weighing this school verses others, first weigh yourself. This school is not for those that arent fully ready to be doctors no matter what. No joke. You better be willing to do just about anything to be a doc because you just may. This place will push you beyond anything you can imagine.
If you do choose WCUCOM know that each class before you is here for you and will go out of our way to help you be successful.
I hope this was helpful.

Haha, I'm pretty sure some of us warned you about this last year. Other than that, I completely agree with your assessment. Second year is even more of a meat grinder. Good luck and best wishes. And 90% graduation seems entirely too high, I think it will be more like 80%.

Glad I passed on my interview offer, thanks for the update. We chatted a while back on PM. I remember reading about some struggles last year. Best of luck and stay strong. You're getting there

I am glad i could help you find a school that fits you best, i believe that is the point of this forum.

I dont want to discourage those that make WCUCOM home, you can make it here if you understand things up front and set yourself up for it.

So many of us forget that when you apply to medical school there are two things being reviewed, you and the medical school. Value yourself.

I will say that things do get better once you start clinical rotations in the third year, but getting there is pretty rough. I think we've lost about 26 people from our starting 112. Where there's a will, there's a way, but it's much harder here than most other places. Also, I'm glad that we are no longer getting called "crybabies" for speaking up.

That was a main reason I passed on it. I remember reading a faculty member talking like that on SDN on previous years' threads

Perhaps we need something like an Ombudsman.

My thoughts of my first semester:
At no point in time did I feel like I was struggling or talked down to. I came out with B's. Even if I worked harder, I would have still got high B's. The school is new, but they're finding their stride and will have a strong program. That's my opinion. Since I spend most of my time at my house, I never noticed any kinds of problems with the town or its residents. Even when I did go out, everyone was nice. This isn't a top choice school, but anyone applying to a DO school shouldn't think that they're going to Harvard. Get in, do your two years of pre clinical sciences, and get out. That's an easy formula that anyone who goes to this school can do.

Anyone know if there is a facebook group for 2020?

Anyone know if there is a facebook group for 2020?

Not yet but SOMA reps will create one that is unique to your class so you dont have to. Sweet right? Cant say we never did anything for ya. They will send access to it sometime in the spring so be chill and check your facebook for it.

Accepted! I'll be going here in the fall. Any comments from any and all current students would be highly appreciated...housing, professors, etc.!

Could I grab that too?

Does anyone know the dates the admissions office will be closed over the holidays?? Just wondering in regards to having sent my secondary application during the crazy mail season.

I was complete November 30th. How long does it take for admission to review my file for interview?

Canceled my interview here. Hope it goes to one of you nice people.

@WorldChanger36 - Have you heard if WCU is really completely losing it's contract with South Central in Laurel next year? That's been the rumor circulating around here. Where do you think they're going to place those 17 rotation spots? More out to McComb/Delta?

I am pretty sure it is. Most 3rd year stuff is going central and to the coast/delta. However thing change here every year and stuff could change back. It really depends on the host sites. This should not get you down as it is not an uncommon thing at most DO schools that host sites change. Yes you will have to move after your second year just to have to move again after your third and this sucks but it isnt uncommon. Any school you choose expect to have to move and DONT choose Carey based on any rotation site. AGAIN Do NOT Choose Carey ( or any other school) based on X Y or Z rotation site.

Now that being said I am not the best source. Soon the official site rotation list will be out and I hope that will be posted here. All I can tell you i what I have heard via the grape vine on this one .

Did anyone email the secondary application and paid the secondary via phone?

We had our initial rotation meeting back on October 2nd and here's the info we were given. I've also heard about the loss of the Laurel site, they had lumped it in with Hattiesburg and just referred to it as the "Pine Belt" site. It also contains rotations at Waynesboro, Ellisville, Collins, Petal, Purvis, and Wiggins

Centreville, AL- projecting 2-4 (requires application)
West Louisiana- Projecting 4-6 (requires application)
East Louisiana (new site)- projecting 3-5 (requires application)
Delta- projecting 8-12, up from the previous 5
Gulf Coast- projecting 10-15
Keesler AFB (Military Only)- projecting 2-5
Pine Belt- projecting 25-32
Capital- projecting 6-8
McComb- projecting 6-9
Meridian- projecting 2-4
Corinth- projecting 5-8 (requires application)
Tupelo- projecting 3-5 (requires application)

From the data we were given, Delta, Corinth, and Tupelo have expanded with Delta expanding the most. Plus, we picked up the new East Louisiana site. We've got somebody now whose sole purpose is rotation site and GME development. This may go up even more by next year.

Does anyone have a phone number for the school that I can call to inquire if my application is complete. I submitted my secondary in early November, and I have received any communication about whether I am missing anything in the file or not. I have tried the numbers on their contact us page, but they seem to be disconnected.
