Wisconsin c/o 2017 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm working on the uniqueness essay at the moment. I'm curious, I know we have 4000 characters, but how much are people finding they are using? Are you guys really pushing the limit or no? I think I'm probably going to have 2500-3000 characters, so I'm not sure if I should make it longer.

I remember not using anywhere near the maximum of characters/words when I applied, and I'm a third year there now, so you definitely don't have to use all 4000 to get in!

If all you have to say is said in 2000 characters, it would look a lot worse to draw it out to 4000. So I would say just go with what you've got.

I agree with elefante7, I used about 3300 characters for my "diversity" essay.

Also, I don't have any additional vet hours since October 2nd. Is anyone in the same boat as me? I feel like a total bum. Hahaha.

Well the only hours I have gotten are continued from ongoing experiences I had on my original app. I'm going to include those, and try to include things I plan on doing after the holidays...possibly frantically set something up before the deadline also 🙂

I'm feeling loserish myself. I just have continuing hours with my job, but nothing else new is brewing. Realistically I'm not going to do anything outside of my job between now and December 5th because of a tight school/work schedule, so I'm just going to talk about new things I learned at work I guess.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that! If I hadn't surprisingly gotten a new job I would have just been continuing one thing and only for 8 hours a week.

Question for you guys... at the bottom of page 2 (Family Section) on the supplemental it says:

"To be completed by students claiming residence for tuition purposes based on employment under Wisconsin statutes 36.27(2)(cm)"

Does this mean we don't have to fill out this page if we are not trying to claim Wisconsin residency? I live in another state and have never lived in Wisconsin. I really don't feel like calling my parents and asking them when they last voted and when they moved into their current house (sometime in the 1980s....) :uhno:

Hello everyone. My name is Ed and I am excited that there is such a place for folks interested and pursuing a career in the medical field. I have an unusual (like most folks) situation and I want to pass it by everyone who might have some advice for me.
I am 23 years old, I was an average (mostly unmotivated) student in high school who would excel in the particular subjects I appreciated (Econ, Physics, Debate.) For the most part I was a slacker with an unbalanced high school transcript. I still got into college (CSU Sacramento) and spent a year and a half studying for a Psychology degree. While in school my dad came down with Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus (probably one of the worst cancers to be diagnosed with.) I dropped my second semester classes and effectively joined the workforce in my talent (Computer Programming) while my father processed through a rigorous treatment and then passed away in August of 1999. Even thinking about going back to school was tough. I am just now starting my academic career backup while working demanding 50-hour weeks. I am positioned for a Managerial Economics degree from UC Davis and I have realistically set myself a graduation date of 2005 for that. While the Econ degree is a realistic degree for graduation, I have always been interested in medicine. My father was a D.D.S/PhD., uncle an Orthopedic Surgeon, and an aunt who is a O.B.GYN. It's not just the family lineage of the profession but I ultimately am interested in the courses of med school and subsequent reward of helping people. I have a couple years of volunteering with terminally ill patients with Hospice as well as indigent farm workers who need medical treatment with the Concerned Coalition of Medical Professionals.
My goal is to become a regular ole' Family Practitioner and the school I will be attending for my undergrad degree has one of the best programs, UC Davis. I would love to be able to just apply and get in there but I know that is not realistic.
My question is, does anyone else have similar circumstances? I will be completing all my Med School pre req's after I finish the B.S. in Managerial Economics so its obvious I am not to concerned about time. My goal, if I am able to achieve admission is to be done with med school; on with a practice by the time I am 35. Does this sound reasonable?

Much Thanks!

Ed

I didn't fill it out because i'm not claiming residency.

Edit: I have no idea where this quote even came from. meant to respond to wld...

Are you guys putting when your parents last voted or when they registered? My mom has been registered in Wisconsin since 1985 but last voted Nov 2012.

I filled what I could out before reaching the bottom and seeing that statement. Didn't bother deleting it yet.

It seems like people are in agreement that this section doesn't need to be filled out by folks who aren't applying as Wisconsin residents, right? (I'm sorry to ask this again; I'm just having a panic moment as I get ready to hit submit...)

I just filled out the parts I could (parents' names, address, employment info) and left the Wisconsin resident stuff blank. I figured it was better to be safe than sorry.

Can I safely take this to mean that I am not the only one who procrastinated and is now finishing her supp app the night before it's due? 🙄

^ LOL. No I'm working on it, too.

Join the club hahahah..
procrastinators unite...TOMORROW!

Me too! Last minute question: I have done nothing, NOTHING, since submitting my VMCAS except continuing work as an assistant at two hospitals (50 hours a week nonetheless) and I included that in the animal related prep experience, but for the other prep experience, I literally have done nothing..

Should I include hobby-ish things? Like, training for a marathon, taking on an epically long book series, etc. I feel like that's better than nothing, and shows that I'm a human being...

Or is it better not to?

What did y'all do?

I think it's better not to include the hobby stuff. I think with just your continuing work stuff, you have a lot more than most of us!

I just put down a one night volunteer thing I did and a competition I was involved in. It's not much but I'm sure they don't expect us to have accumulated another 1,000 hours experience in the past month.

Yeah, I guess maybe it comes off as filler material...
I just hate to see an empty box!! 🙂

I didn't put anything in my other prep box. Just said that I continued my previous volunteer stuff and got a new job.

FML. Just lost everything. Of course it's saved...on a computer that fried the hard drive yesterday.

Apparently I am not meant to go to Wisconsin.
Internet is currently down!
Seriously considering making a mad dash to Starbucks in my jammies 🙂

Oh no TooLove - that's the worst!

For my other prep section I talked about a leadership course I'm taking through work and re-learning Spanish. In talking to some of the vets I have shadowed they encouraged me that "every little bit helps" to set your self apart from the other applicants.

Good luck to everyone finishing the SA and in getting accepted (fingers crossed)

aaand submit!

so glad that's over. the one thing about procrastination is that it's always interesting!!

Submitted mine as well! Always a relief once they're submitted and out of my hands!

Submitted mine as well! Now I am finally finished all my supplementals. Did anyone else find the diversity essay difficult? I think what I finally put together was strong but man did it make me feel a little icky to "sell myself" so much.

I had to write a similar essay for SGU so I just tweaked that to make it fit for Wisconsin too. To be honest, I don't really expect to get in to Wisconsin so I guess that made me a little more relaxed about the whole thing.

Did anyone else notice in the confirmation email: "We will be informing you of the status of your admission by the end of March 2013."

We have to wait until March??? ugh!

I know March!! How awful.
My worst fear is that I will not get accepted anywhere and then I will be desperately hanging on to Wisconsin even though I don't think I'll get in.

I loathe talking and writing about myself so I definitely struggled with the essay. I ended up making it a narrative of especially unique experiences and difficulties. I hope it speaks for itself. I can't bring myself to say because I have done xyz this makes me xyz and therefore a good fit blah blah blah.

Wow, I didn't notice the "March 2013" part until you mentioned it. Geeze louise. Here's hoping that we all hear back before then!!

Does anybody who applied last year happen to remember/have the email? Did it also say March?

Yeah, I was also really surprised to read March in the e-mail. I think I remember seeing people hear last year during late December (on the acceptances thread), but maybe I'm wrong. Did the supplemental application get submitted at the same time last year?

It was my understanding that the supplemental was due a little earlier this year as compared to last.

(From the email: "Your deadline for completing the supplemental application is Tuesday, December 04, 2012 at 1:00:00 PM, Central Standard Time. Please note that this deadline is earlier than previous application years' deadlines.")

Edit: Just checked the c/o 2016 Acceptances thread and it looks like the earliest acceptance was February 13th. Yikes.

Yeah, you're right. I just checked the last couple of years, and they've all been around then. Not sure where I got December from (?).

I was excited to submit the SA last night but freaked when I saw the "We'll let you know around March."

Y U make us wait so long? :scared:

WOW I feel like the biggest idiot ever. I just made my payment last night thinking that everything was submitted and I did not notice a "submit application" button until now. GREAT. Now everything was pointless. I emailed them about it but I doubt it will change anything. I am so upset with myself.... 🙁

Oh no, that is the worst! If it helps, I did something similar for Tufts - somehow the school Apple computer I was working on failed to save my video essay and I couldn't put a new one together quickly enough to make the deadline. Even worse, Tufts is IS for me. 🙁

Happens to the best of us. Maybe they will understand and let you submit anyway! Hang in there!

I would think since admissions decisions are expected to take 3 months >_< they would let you submit a few hours late!

I almost did the same thing so don't feel like an idiot. I was a little freaked out as to how close I was to not actually submitting it. You might be ok though since you already paid for it and everything was complete. All you can do is wait to hear from them. :xf:

Don't fret! They are usually pretty lenient about those things. Everything will work out!

How bad do you think it is that I put "patients" instead of "patience" in my essay. Oh no!!

Maybe they will think you were visualizing being in practice so vividly you had a little bit of a Freudian slip 😛 obviously no typo is a good thing, but it could have been worse.

I did the same thing lol

Does anyone know if you can establish residency in WI after a year in school?

It doesn't really matter at this point since I haven't heard back (and probably won't until mid-February if they stick to the same timeline as last year) but I'm trying to determine how much of a tuition difference there would be between my top choice schools.

You can't, but their out of state tuition is second cheapest of US schools.

Sent from my HTC Glacier using SDN Mobile

Yep I knew that about the OOS tuition, I was just trying to see how much cheaper it would be than my IS. If you could establish residency then it would become significantly cheaper vs. just a bit cheaper. Again, not terribly relevant until we hear back but just thinking about it.

Thanks for the info!

Do not fret!! I cannot tell you how many Freudian slips were in my applications......I even left a section saying "INSERT ANSWER HERE." and still somehow was accepted!!! I'm currently going into my second semester of first year at UW, and I couldn't be HAPPIER that they accepted me into their program!!

Last year it seems like people started hearing back mid-February (phone calls around the 16th and mail around the 18th) - so it may not be as long of a wait as we've been told! On the other hand, it's still not yet mid-February either... time is going by soooo slowly!!
