Wisconsin c/o 2017 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm incredibly nervous! Part of me is glad they don't have interviews and the other part wishes they did. :scared:

Does anyone know if the phone calls are only for accepted students? Or would they call you and reject you as well???

i was rejected last year, and not by phone call...i don't remember if it was email or snail mail, but it definitely wasn't a phone call.

You receive a thin white letter of doom if you get rejected.

The OOS who are accepted get phone calls, IS that are accepted get a package in the mail.

i got a phone call last night, from an area code i wasn't familiar with...

when i picked up, they hung up. my heart was racing so much because i knew i was in a building with thick cement walls.

then my logic kicked in, and i thought to myself, "it's a quarter til nine (quarter til ten in madison), ain't no admission committee gonna be callin you this time of night!"

it was some strange number from las vegas area. i figured you all could at least understand my initial (and silly) panic in this situation. haha.

Hahaha I'm the same way. I got a phone call from a strange number two days ago. I felt stupid after I listened to my voicemail, it way my area code and it was my mom calling me from her work. Ugh

I think that when they called me, it was from a blocked number.

So, we are supposed to know this week? I am OOS. What area code are we looking for?

The current students I know about found out late next week (~Feb 21), but they were all IS. Also, the admissions committee seems to be behind this year :/

Madison's area code is 608.

It's area code 608. I think last year I got my rejection letter on either Saturday the 18th or 25th of February (I'm IS). I believe the OOS that were admitted got phone calls before any IS heard anything, so it is possible you could hear something this week.

Looking back at the forum from last year it looks like the first OOS got an acceptance call on 2/16 (which was a Thursday)

The area code is 608, but I'm pretty sure the number was withheld when they called me. I've seen what I believe to be the committee holed up in conference rooms recently, so I think they're still working. Hopefully not too much longer for you guys to wait!

Do you know if they leave messages? I missed a call from an unknown number the other day. I assume they do, but obviously I'm on edge like everyone else right now haha

I know someone that got an OOS acceptance call yesterday. They missed the call, but could see that the area code was from Wisconsin, so maybe they aren't blocking the number 100% of the time?

I had gotten a call from an unknown number with no message the day prior to the actual call - I suspect that they had tried to reach me when I was in an interview at another school. I don't know for sure that it was them, but if that was the case, they didn't leave a message. I'm not sure though, so don't quote me on it!

They have already started calling OOS applicants?

Congrats!!!!

Thanks, I'm really surprised. Especially since I got waitlisted at Iowa state today and I thought I was 100x's more likely to get in there than Wisconsin. Now I actually have to choose.

Hmm...well that definitely makes me wonder! It was at 6:55 EST. I didn't get a call today though soooo I'm not sure if it's even connected. Probably my nervous nature nowadays 🙄 But since OOS calls have started, it does make me a bit more nervous that maybe it was them...

In other news, congrats wildcat!!

Do we know if there's any rhyme or reason as to who gets called and who doesn't? Trying to not freak out about not getting a call, but wondering if it has to do with fairly close proximity to WI (I'm in MN). Anyone have a theory?

Also, congrats to those who've found out!

I got a call today around 7 pm EST and I am OOS. I also got a call Monday morning from a blocked number but no message was left. Also, he told me they are extending the class size from 80 to 87. Best of luck to everyone!!

YAAAAAAAY!! Congrats hp!!! :hardy:

Thanks boilermaker 🙂 The assistant professor who called me (he said his name at the beginning but I was way not focused enough to remember it...) had my application in front of him and talked about parts of it with me which I thought was really nice. He talked for a while so I'm sure the calls are being spaced out a good amount. Anyways, good luck to everyone else!!!

Does anyone know how wait listed candidates are notified? Is it through the mail as well, or do they email?

Does anyone know when they stop making acceptance calls? Based on the emails I didn't even think they started replying until March. Now that I realize calls are being made much earlier I'm curious at what point there is no hope of receiving a call.

I was told their accepted students information day was Friday, March 15th so I would assume to get OOS students enough time to make travel plans theyd have those done by the end of Feb... But just a guess!

Same here - I was also told they sent all the letters of invitation (at least for OOS) on Friday - so hoping that brings good news for many!

I received my call on Friday morning - the woman I spoke with was very nice and very friendly. Very excited for open house - can't wait to see what Madison and the school/program/students are like! Already bought my tickets. :-D

What has everyone else heard about the program? When I was visiting another school they had some very nice things to say about Wisconsin (great profs, some PBL, good program - though didn't say why) and of course the research opts will be amazing !

I'm IS and I didn't get anything today. I live about 30 minutes outside of Madison but the post office in my town seems to add an additional day on to everything...

I don't remember if she specified that it was only OOS or all acceptances that would be sent out. She did say that only the OOS would be getting a call though - (I'm sure to give us a little more time to get our travel in order)...

But nonetheless good luck! I hope you get your great news soon!

Yay!!! Just bought my tickets today, too. So excited to meet everyone and see the place!

Hi everyone! I technically don't belong in this thread, since I'll be applying this summer (for class of 2018), but I've been obsessively following all these threads anyway 🙂 UW is my dream school for a number of reasons, but I am out-of-state (Illinois resident) and the OOS situation may be hopeless since they only accept 10-20 OOS.

I read on the UW admissions website the average GPA and GRE for accepted out-of-state students and, although it was high, it didn't seem ridiculously so. (I believe the average GPA was only about a 3.8, and I currently have higher than this). This makes me think they are looking more closely at other factors -- after all, with hundreds of OOS applying for just 10 spots I would think they could have found 10 people with close to a 4.0. I've been trying to search these forums for the stats of accepted UW students OUT of state, but have had trouble finding any. For those of you OOS'ers that have just been accepted, would you mind sharing with me what you think was the biggest factor in your acceptance? Thanks in advance, and sorry for sounding totally obsessive and insecure 😀

I posted over in the successful applicants thread, so you can get a good look at my stats there. Honestly though, I don't really know why I got in. I have no idea what anyone thought of my PS, my stats are good, but GPA isn't above their averages. The only thing I can think is my supplemental uniqueness essay was kind of interesting. I didn't really talk about what I had that was unique, but rather used an unique experience to as a platform to really show who I am and how I think. I'm jealous because someone on here mentioned that they got to have a whole conversation about their application when they got their call. I really wish I knew.
Edit: I should mention that my supplemental essay could have gone one way or another. I was lucky in that it probably struck the admissions committee positively and not negatively. It definitely could have gone that way.

I'm the lucky one who had a convoy with the admissions committee member about my application during my acceptance call! So here's what HE said he liked about my app: first off, my cum GPA is only a 3.6 and my GRE scores were just average but my last few semesters I've had a 3.8. However, he was impressed by my 3000 hours of clinical experience at a practice as kennel and tech since I was 16. I also have some research experience, though more with molecular bio and not with direct animal exposure. I also have about 2000 animal hours with a shelter and a couple wildlife places so basically I think what made me stand out was my amount of experience rather than just grades. My PS was also something he mentioned in that he thought I had a good grasp on the profession.
Other than that, I'm a minority (Puerto Rican) although he didn't mention that tp me so I dpnt know if that played a roll is all. The impression I got is that while they value grades heavily, they also value knowledge of the veterinary profession and experience a lot too.

Don't know if that helped or if it was just me rambling (trying to neglect studying for my micro anatomy quiz that's in a few minutes...) but I hope it helped you out!!!
🙂

Does anyone know if the admissions people said when the in-state letters would be mailed? I cannot wait to find out! lol.
