Wisconsin c/o 2017 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm on the waitlist, so I have been given no resources. It's very frustrating. Since so many applicants are taken off of the waitlist, I wish they would at least provide the first 30 people on the list the same helpful information that they give the accepted applicants.

That is frustrating, but feel free to PM me and I can give you whatever e-mails you need that they gave. Basically all the gave in acceptance letters was a list of e-mails and a form for the invited students day I'm pretty sure...

And, are there any park and ride lots around town that would enable me to live out 20 minutes or so from the school. Then I could just bus or bike in the rest of the way.

I don't attend Wisconsin but I work on Campus and live about 30 minutes outside of Madison. There are some Park and Rides on the outskirts of Madison. You can drive to the Park and Ride then bus in. For the one closet to me (Dutch Mill), I have to drive about 15 minutes to the Park and Ride and then its a 35 minutes bus ride to Campus.

Depending on where you are looking to live I would check out the Madison Metro page http://www.cityofmadison.com/metro/ so you can see what routes leave from which Park and Ride.

Correction regarding my previous information about the wait list process:

2 years ago they accepted 15 in-state alternates, which prompted them to add more alternate spots. They have also taken as few as 2 off the in-state wait list, typically they take around 6 or 7, but there's no way to know from year to year. Disappointing for me at #10. The list hasn't moved at all yet.

In response to the question about parking and taking a bus in, there are tons of places that you can park as long as you're willing to take the bus. There are metro transfer points all around Madison that have parking nearby, but you can also figure out other street parking locations that don't require permits. For example, a lot of people park in the Hilldale neighborhood and walk/bike/bus in from there.

I'm super excited for the invited students day tomorrow! Did anyone else get offered reimbursement for travel from out of state? I'm pretty pumped about that... Cornell definitely didn't offer that to me. Anyways, sad to leave the 60/70 degree weather we're expecting here in Colorado for the cold cold cold but I should probs be getting used to it!!! Hope to see some of you there! 🙂

yeah i just got back from FL and I live in GA, so I'm in for a very different weather change. I'm still trying to get my parking situated. I'm flying to Cedar Rapids and my aunt and uncle are going to drive me there so I want to make it as smooth a trip as possible since they are going out of there way for me.

The park and ride thing would be a last resort, but I'd really like to know if there were other parking options closer to/on campus.

I was also offered reimbursement. That made the decision to visit a lot easier!

American Airlines left my bag in Dallas though. Don't they know that it's cold and that I'm from Florida, 😱!

I heard that there is a Dean's Social tomorrow as well. It starts right after the open house ends. How many SDNers are here for the open house?!

Oh that stinks about your luggage! And obvs I'm coming to the open house. Waiting in Denver to board right now! And I don't think I've heard about the Dean's social... I glanced at the agenda really quickly and doesn't look like too long of a day! Thank goodness.

I might go to the social - depends whether or not I finish my exam early (if I finish it too early, I may not want to stick around, even for free refreshments).

Thanks! I'll send you a PM.

A 35 minute bus ride? Wow, I didn't think Madison was that big. Damn. I just want to live where the rent isn't crazy expensive, and where my cat can go outside without being run over. Thank you for the web address. I'll check that out.

How will I know if I see anyone from SDN?

I'm already at the school hanging out in the lobby.

I'm wearing a pink blazer and jeans so you can know me that way. Leaving my hotel now! Supposed to be a 30 minute walk... knowing me I'll get quite lost and it'll be much longer, haha.

I'm leaving my hotel in about 10 minutes, be there in 20... I'll be in a blue and white striped shirt, dark blue jeans, brown boots. Short, lightish brown hair, carrying a tan purse... I'm relatively shy (at first), so I may appear to look rather sheepish upon entry. 🙂

I was also offered reimbursement - does anyone know who we are supposed to bring the required paperwork to? I am assuming it's Carmen Reamer, but was wondering if anyone knew more definitively...

Ahhhh! The open house definitely made me 100% sure I want to go to Wisconsin next year. Everyone was super friendly, loved the students, loved the faculty I met (even two people from my hometown?!). Unfortunately as I'm in Madison less than 48 hours I haven't really gotten a chance to look around the city, but I definitely love all that I saw of downtown and campus. Turning in my acceptance form as soon as I get back home 🙂

i really enjoyed it too. i feel like i belong in some weird way. lol. i love the cold weather and no sunshine!!! does that make me weird?

and crazycatlady i think i totally met you. Well..not sure. Were you in Group 8?

No, I was in group 5. But maybe we still bumped paths? Glad you had a good time yesterday!

What did you guys like the most about the school?

How were you all offered reimbursement?

I finally decided not to attend simply because I couldn't afford the cost of travel.

What were your impressions? If you'd like to PM me, please do 🙂

What is the quality of life like in Madison? Is it hard to adjust to if you're not used to long winters?

I really like it here, and as a Californian (one who did her undergrad in San Diego, at that), I think that should say something. At the present moment, I'm really freaking sick of the snow and the cold, but that's because it's mid-late March and there's still snow in the forecast 😡 It's not as if I'm totally miserable, just wishing it was warmer for my spring break. Even after going from no-winter to long-winter, I'm still happy to have moved here for school.

I am having a hard time making a decision. I wanted to know if any current students have pros/cons for UW. I've looked in the other thread about factors when picking a school, but UW hasn't been updated for a while. Elefante and Variegata have already said some positive things about their experience there. Would any other students like to weigh in?

I feel like a crazy person because I change my mind every hour. I am deciding between UW and UF (my IS).

👍

Same here - on all accounts!

It'd also be great to hear why some OOS students decided on UW (I'm sure the OOS tuition is a factor - but what else)?

Also, does anyone have any idea on stats for what UW graduates do following graduation? What percentages go into internship, residency, research, private practice, etc?

I think Variegata and I are the only current students who are on here much anymore. You might be able to find others that will respond to PMs even though they don't check the message boards anymore. Both of us are out of state so the comments that we have made come from that perspective.

I have no idea on those stats, but I think it varies very widely from year to year. I know from my year there are quite a few people doing internships, many going into private practice, I know of a few going into research, a few going into residencies that don't require internships first (such as pathology), but I don't know the numbers. The OAA office might be able to help with that.

I'm more than willing to continue answering specific questions if you have those or possibly putting you in touch with someone in your area of interest that might be able to answer them better. I also strongly advise contacting students on the current student list for different kinds of questions or talking to people in OAA.

Thanks for the reply -- I meant to reply sooner, but things got a little busy here....

In any event, I followed your advice and contacted other students... Decision made! I'll see you all in Madison come August. Yayyyyy! ::woot:

I sent my acceptance in yesterday! I'm surprised they don't require a deposit... or am I a fool who missed something??

So excited for August!!!! I say again: :woot::woot::woot::woot:

Anyone have any idea how much the OOS waitlist has moved? If at all?

Not really sure.... No idea if it helps, but I know there are at least ~8-9 OOS students that have accepted their spot... Maybe Lynn Maki could tell you?

If you call OAA, they will tell you how far things have moved. But they likely will not have moved much, because we are still before the April 15th deadline.

I accepted at Wisconsin, so assuming that I do not get off the waitlist for another school I will be there in the fall! I'm so glad I finally made a decision!!

in the same boat as you cheshireneko! but part of me just feels like Wisconsin is the right choice despite what I hear from my waitlist school

Okay so just curious, does anyone know when Wisconsin generally gives out financial aid information? I know we don't apply for scholarships until we're into the fall semester but how about the loan information? Also, does anyone know if you can take out federal loans not only for direct tuition & fees but also for potential living expenses?

Sorry... lots of questions! 🙂

I honestly don't remember when the aid info comes out, but the disbursement check for fall comes in September, so it's sometime before then. Not very helpful, sorry.
I only have federal loans, and they cover everything, both tuition and living expense, so unless you have a very lavish lifestyle, you should be fine.

I was wondering how pets do in the cold since I may at some point bring mine. If it's 20 degrees outside or a blizzard how does this affect a dog when they have to go outside do their business? What do you do with them if they can't go outside to pee because the weather is just that bad? Is walking on snow bad for their paws? Sorry if this sounds silly, but I don't have to worry about this in FL.

MN native here. Depending on the dog, they'll either LOVE the snow and never want to leave it or do their business quickly and then beg to come inside. Those have been my experiences anyway. I've never had a small dog though, so I'm not sure if that makes it trickier or anything (since snow drifts can get pretty high). Growing up we used to shovel out an area for our dog to do her business in if it got too deep, but other than that there wasn't a problem.

The weather has never been bad enough for my dogs to not be able to go outside - unless it's like a thunderstorm and even then they don't last long enough (at downpouring-so-horrible-they-can't-go-outside level) that it becomes an issue.

As far as paws go - if its a fluffy pooch then snow can ball up in the fur between the pads, its not hard to just dig them out or melt them out. Some dogs have more sensitive paws to the cold than others - one of my dogs growing up wore booties outside in the cold - they look silly and she didn't really like it but it was better than nothing.

While they may not like the snow at first, if they're anything like my SO's dog they'll probably end up liking it far more than you will 🙂

Does anyone have an idea of how far they've made it on the OOS wait list? Or if they're even still calling people off of it? Ack!

I called Wednesday out of curiosity. At that time, it had moved 11 spots. She mentioned that they waited to start calls to allow forms postmarked 4/15 to arrive, and that people then had time to decide -- it did sound like it will still move a little more. Good luck and please post if you hear anything!

Thanks! I was looking at threads from previous years, and it looked like last year at this time they were already around spot 30. It makes me nervous for this year...
Good luck to you, too!

Hey guys! Just in case any of you were wondering about when we would hear about financial aid stuff as I was, I bothered the financial aid department and found out a few things. Financial aid and loan info should be coming in mid-May and as veterinary students we're eligible for up to $40,500 in an unsubsidized Stafford loan.

That's all!!

Hi, I was at spot 27 and I did accept the offer as of friday. Hopefully there are a few more available 😀

Off the wait list! Woke up to an e-mail today; accepted immediately.

Congrats, although sad to lose another UMN person 😛 What number were you?

I know. So very tough to give up my Minnesota seat. I was super excited about Minnesota, but Wisconsin has been my No. 1 since the beginning ... and the tuition difference absolutely can't be ignored.

I was #32. While I was hopeful, I definitely wasn't counting on them making it this far. I think perhaps the extra 7 OOS seats means they're going just a bit deeper into the wait list this year.
