Women's Interview Attire #4

Thank you for the info!! Is a sheath dress + blazer (same color, material, and brand) the same thing as a suit dress? I found one that would look very similar to that navy suit dress that you posted

Yes! :claps: Sheath dress and jacket in the same fabric -- That's it in a nutshell.

Would this be an appropriate blouse to wear? I am a little worried about the floral pattern.
Thank you!

I'd agree that it's just a tad over the line. Points for simple and black and white, but just a wee bit too busy. I'm fine with the peaked lapels is the rest of the suit fits nicely, and agree that the neckline's great.

@gyngyn What style of purse is business professional?

The function of a purse is to hold the things you need to carry. In this case, it would be your car keys, phone, a pen, just enough makeup for touch-ups, comb, wallet, and not much else. You can carry a smallish tote big enough to fit a portfolio so long as it's sleek. But if it looks like a beach bag, folks are going to wonder what you've got in there that you can't live without. If you need to change shoes for a walking tour (better if you don't) you're into tote territory.

Thankfully, the trend toward flashy purses with ruches and bows and their own jewelry is over!

Me too. The neckline is good. Too bad about the print.
Peak lapels are a bit tuxedo...

Thanks for the feedback! I will switch out the blouse for one with a solid color but will have to stick with the current suit given the time constraints. I am pretty happy with how the suit fits, so hopefully the lapels won't be too noticeable if I dress conservatively in all other aspects.

Those are actually the ones someone else recommended as well and I ended up ordering them! They’re actually supposed to arrive today so crossing my fingers they fit hahaha

I liked the curvy fit, but they were slightly baggy in the backside/thigh region. But I hope it works out for you!

I just ordered the "Classic" fit, which is supposed to be "easy through the hip/thigh compared to AT's "modern" fit, which is slim through the hips. I'll let you know how that goes 🙂

@notthrowingawaymyshot if possible, can you also PM me about the referral? This brand sounds awesome!
Yes will do! 🙂

I got the curvy fit and they still fit pretty slim through my thighs BUT much better than any other style I’ve tried on and they don’t look like leggings. Unfortunately most pants will fit more snug around my hips so I think this is my best option

I would love anyone’s opinions! These are the best fitting pants I have found through my lengthy search, I know they fit quite slim but I just can’t find anything that’s not “slim” cut but are these pants still appropriate? I think they are the most flattering style I have found that don’t fit me like leggings. (Blacked our some stuff just for anonymity lol)

Edit: the jacket would cover my upper thighs and behind for some more coverage as well.

Too tight. Good color, though.

Do you think if the bottom wasn’t a slim cut and a more traditional straight leg it would be better? Or is it just too slim on my hip area in general
Straight leg would be better. Get the waist tailored if need be.
This one even looks tight around the knee.

Ahh I see what you mean, I had tried the size up in this style and only the waist went up not anywhere in the legs but they have another straight leg curvy fit I will try as well, thank you!

Ann Taylor Trouser cut, wider at lower leg should solve the tight at the knee issue. And yes, I know these slacks are not "in style" right now and it is really hard to find any slacks that are not "ankle, slim, skinny, or cropped".

These were the ones I originally wanted to order but unfortunately they were sold out in my size and even the size up 🙁 will probably wait until they bring it back in stock and order! If not I might just opt for a skirt or dress suit

Is it okay to use an umbrella in the case of rain? Do they expect you to have a raincoat with a hood?

No leather portfolio to use to store info and take notes?

You don't need this. It can look...stuffy.
Interesting. I've always used one for my corporate job interviews, but I guess this is different? Do schools usually provide a pad of paper and a pen for notes?

This is different. You won't need to take notes.
If you do, we'll supply the pen!

They also make nice-looking notepads in smaller sizes like 5"x7" or 6" x 9" that will fit easily into a medium-sized purse.

And umbrellas will not be held against you, though you're unlikely to need them. If you decide you need one, get a small collapsible style in a conservative color (and offer to share)

alright, everyone. interview in t-minus 2 days. I need some last-minute help!

I think I've finally found appropriate block heels that aren't suede or patent leather (let me know if they're ok, please)
Also, I have two options for silk shells for under my suit jacket - are both fine or would you side with one over the other?

@DokterMom & @gyngyn - I'd love your opinion, but everyone else free to chime in!

Shoes are great - very appropriate.

On the shells - If the red has a 'keyhole' (think 'peephole') opening in front, I'd go with the white, assuming you don't get a peepshow down the neckline when you lean forward. Doesn't appear to be too low-cut otherwise.

Nice suit!

hi everyone,
I did not get a chance to peruse through the 30 pages on here
but wondering if a knee length (when standing) dark navy pencil skirt and a slightly flowy/loose, collared, light blush/pink blouse would be okay, and tucked into the skirt?

Also with 2 inch nude/suede pumps?
or should I do black?

Is it a skirt suit? I’d stick with black (not patent leather, not suede) heels. You can also search through the thread to see if similar questions have been asked/answered!

It would be a work skirt like those you find at HM (in their professional wear section).
I think black leather pumps it is.

Is this kind of pattern completely out? I understand it totally might be too much, it’s just finally an outfit I feel confident in.

The pattern is pretty but do you think that might be a distraction? just imo
Fair concern, just not sure if it’s too much or just enough to be interesting. But **** it, I’m already posting so here is my full range of options. Anyone feel free to critique.

The dark green feel a little too dark. I like the light pink the best, but it’s a tank and the shoulders are just a little too thin if I needed to take off the jacket. The white is fine but boring, also sleeveless but very very wide shoulders. The black pattern is also sleeveless but wide shoulders.

Edit: I do also have a matching sheath dress for the jacket, but tbh I never really understand the whole matching dress and jacket color. It seems weird.

If you turn #2 backwards (and carefully remove tag) what do we get?

You need a suit - whether it be a skirt suit, pantsuit, or dress suit doesn't matter but a work skirt likely isn't going to cut it. You don't want your outfit to be the reason you stand out 🙂

i like the pink tank the most -- the v looks less deep compared to the white tank and the brown tank is nice but would be better without the keyhole.

the floral tank is cute but probably too loud for interviews.

love that shade of gray for your blazer/dress by the way. did you get it at ann taylor by chance?

Thank you! It’s actually black, but the light made it look grey. But yes! Ann Taylor saved my life. I have a really athletic build and huge quads, making business really not a good look on me. I was really about to give up before I went there. Still not completely perfect on the pants, but absolutely good enough for interviews.

Just tried on my full interview outfit and it looks great! However, I have discovered that my pantyhose makes my pumps kind of slide around while I walk. Specifically around the heel, I feel like my foot may just pop out. Does anyone have any tricks for maintaining traction with pantyhose? Is this a normal problem or is it perhaps my pantyhose or shoes?

Maybe try getting those jelly heel inserts for the back of the foot? That should probably help in making the shoe stick to your foot/the panty hose

Were your heels too large to begin with or is this just a problem when you wear pantyhose? Maybe a smaller size would be better. Otherwise, gel inserts or anti-slip heel grip liners should work!

Hi guys, I bought a dark navy suit for interviews but am a little worried now about getting a pair of heels to coordinate. It looks like tan and nude are a no-no? Does anyone have suggestions? Not sure if it'll be a huge faux pas to wear black heels with navy. I'm really into the Everlane Day Heel in Pale Rose or Honey, but unfortunately it's looking like those won't fit the bill :/

You can definitely wear black shoes with a navy suit.

Would we consider this shirt too red? Slash neckline too low? Just discovered this thread, a larger sample of responses is ideal lol
