WSU 2024-2025 (c/o 2029 hopefuls)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ok funny story...I accidentally applied to Washington because I had a brain fart and thought it was Washington, D.C (my mom laughs at me at least once a week about it), and I want to stay on the East coast/at least in my same time zone, but now I got waitlisted and I'm so grateful for my lil brain fart and I'm so proud of everyone here whether you got accepted, wait listed, or denied. Everyone is such a strong candidate, and there just aren't enough seats for everyone unfortunately, but please be proud of yourself no matter what, because I sure as heck am proud of you!

Can I ask your guys’ stats if you were either waitlisted or accepted? I might wanna apply to this school a second time if this cycle isn’t for me, but I wanna compare GPAs mainly bc mine isn’t competitive

i was waitlisted but- check the “successful applicants 2029” thread for my stats!

Last year they gave waitlist rankings it seems. No movement until after April 15th.
Hm so basically if you are already accepted somewhere you wouldn’t be able go choose between them before the deadline?

I think you’d accept the sure thing, and acknowledge to yourself that if you get pulled from the waitlist for WSU and would rather go there, you’ll have to rescind your other acceptance to go to WSU- I’m sure it happens all the time. At the most you’d be out the acceptance deposit (normally $500ish) which isn’t nothing but not enough of a barrier if WSU is *your* school (plus it’s soooo much more affordable than most schools, at least for OOS applicants like me)!

Is there anyone here who currently attends WSU? If so, could I PM you to learn some more about the school?

Yes! This is the situation with almost all schools. Usually never pull from waitlist before April 15th. You’d definitely be smart to put a deposit down on a sure acceptance and then risk losing it if you decided to attend WSU instead if you were pulled off the list

Yes definitely will be accepting and happy that I have that! Its good to know that you can rescind though thats what I was confused about, so thank you for this! Definitely also more affordable for me as well haha

Yea that makes total sense, thank you!!

I got an OOS waitlist!!! I'm so excited for this chance.

It is definitely something to be optimistic about like the email says! It seems like a big bunch of the schools haven't released decisions yet, so I think the waitlist could move a lot as individuals accept spots at different schools. Plus, you never know if you could be next up on the waitlist!

I wonder if they ever send out where you sit on the waitlist so you have a better idea of if you'd be offered a spot or not 🤔

That would be fantastic, although I feel like I would want to know once instead of having a way to see if my spot moves or not.. I'd hate to have matriculation loom closer and feel like I can't help but constantly monitor my position lol

I also wonder how many individuals were placed on the waitlist.

Waitlist OOS! Hmm I wonder how quickly we hear back if it's before the April acceptance deadline for other schools

Typically waitlists for all schools don’t hear back before the deadline. The deadline determines how many seats are filled, thus that’s when they know how many they need to still fill

[QUOTE="Gina Lawson, post: Do we think there are separate waitlists for out of state, in state, and Wiche?[/QUOTE]

IS vs OOS likely does have two separate waitlists given IS still hasn’t interviewed and won’t know anything until February

Is there a chat made for WSU 2029 students? starting to look at housing options and getting concerned...

I emailed regarding if they’d be ranking the waitlist/giving us our ranking so I’ll update if and when they respond 🙂
Per admissions: no ranking this year and they will not be giving anyone updates on their “place” on the waitlist. Said spots will be filled as they become available by people rejecting their offers- no transcripts needed at this time for waitlisters

YAY I'm so glad decisions are going out! CONGRATS to all accepted and waitlisted!
I received an early acceptance and committed to WSU 🥹

Who is definitely going?

I'd love to make a place for committed students to connect.. should I make a FB group or is there a better way?

Also find me on IG! @future.island.vet
Yayyyy it feels so much more real now

There might be an official FB page in the works, maybe ask WSU?

I think I’m very likely as an OOS student to accept their offer- the cost is unbeatable by any of my other schools. I do have to consider the needs of my spouse, who will need to be employed and happy throughout those 4 years, but we are seriously considering WSU! His employability in the Pullman area would be our limiting factor, but he’s looking into it.

I keep peeking over at him today and asking, “GO COUGS??” 🤣🤣 Still waiting on a few schools but I’m very excited about WSU!!!

Edited to add that my spouse is the most supportive person on the planet and will go wherever I want to go, but I also don’t want him to work a job that makes him unhappy for four years!!!

Ooo that would be great!!

The cost is really unbeatable. I hope your spouse can find work! I'm leaving my spouse and two toddlers (and a bunch of animals) back home 🥲 super rough but it makes the most sense I'm so many ways. My hub went to UW so I am teasing him a lot with the "Go Cougs!" 🤣

Hey! im like 99% sure ill be going as OOS. Already looking at housing and my husband is looking at their closest nursing school! So excited. Anyone have ideas for housing? Was thinking of buying and then renting rooms to fellow students...

Yay! There is a FB group for WSU CVM students where some people have been posting to sell or rent out. It seems like a lot of students bought homes in mobile parks. I already had a housing option fall into my lap from a friend of one of the professors. So there should be plenty options!

Hi! did you end up making a group chat? if not, groupme is a good chat group or discord

Congratulations to everyone! FYI Admissions usually sets up a FB group for each class so you will all be able to connect that way. I would not worry about housing - Pullman has SO much housing available and housing is very reasonably priced in the area. I rented in Pullman from 2015 to 2024 and paid around $450/month for a room in a 2 bed apt for several years, and about $775/month for a 1 bed apt w/ pets in the later years.

Whats even the likely hood of getting taken off the waitlist for WSU ahhhhh

It’s unknown. Especially since this year they completely overhauled and changed their process. Last year they sent the same email about it being “optimistic” but they also gave people a ranking last year. It also seems the waitlist is much bigger this year (probably due to them increasing their class size). People DID get off last year but it seemed minimal so I’m honestly I’m gonna remain hopeful but not expectant if that makes sense lol

To the current WSU students, when should we start looking at/applying for housing? Should we start earlier like ASAP, or is it normal to wait until like summer months?

Hi! I’m between schools and I reallyyyy enjoy Washington’s programs, but I’ve heard some negatives about living in Pullman? I know everyone’s experience is different and I could really like it, but if anyone can share their experience living there that would be really helpful right now lol!

I grew up in the suburbs of a major city so it’s quite a bit different, it’s got a small town/country vibe for sure. But I have totally fallen in love with Pullman and the surrounding area (the Palouse, look up some pictures!). It’s beautiful here year round and the weather has been fairly mild in the time I’ve been here. Amazing scenic drives and a few absolute gem spots for hiking. Pullman is pretty small, it’s got some parks and nice places to walk, and the downtown was recently renovated so there’s a nice area to get food/coffee. There is a larger town 20 minutes away in Idaho that’s another college town, so lots more spots to hang out there. A couple bigger cities 40 minutes and an hour and a half away for anything you might be missing from the city (Lewiston and Spokane).

Not a bad idea to coordinate with other students on the class Facebook page soon if you’re looking for roommates. There are A TON of apartments/housing options though. My apartment buildings have a bunch of unoccupied units and it’s well priced, so I would assume it’s similar everywhere. I’m always seeing “leasing now” banners when I drive around. I moved in a bit early compared to most of my classmates, but it was a breeze getting housing.

OOS accepted, new to the thread ❤️ Does anyone know what it's like in the WSU student housing? My hubby and 2 children are all moving up there with me. We also have 2 kit-kats and 1 small dog but their pet policy isn't very clear. I know they have the family apartments, but my hubby heard that it gets noisy, especially on weekends. Should we look for other housing options since we will have our littles and pets?

I also have a ton of questions like do we wear scrubs everyday? I'm moving from an area where our winters are very mild and if it ever snows, it doesn't stick for more than a day. So I'm also starting to overthink the little things like whether or not I will freeze to death if I walk to school? I'm freaking out a little bit 😅

From what I’ve heard the WSU student housing isn’t the best, but there are a lot of other options, tons and tons of apartment complexes to choose from so you will be able to find the right size and pet policy. As long as you avoid living near the fraternities it’s pretty quiet at night (but the frat parties can be heard a couple blocks away, so steer well clear).

Scrubs are worn every day there are labs, so usually a few times a week. This winter has been fairly mild, from what I’ve heard sometimes it does snow more, but at least this year snow hasn’t stuck for more than a couple days. It rained way more than it snowed in November/December. There are some people from Hawaii who never saw snow before coming here, and they’re doing just fine!

Depends on what you consider a mild winter... it was definitely colder last year than it is currently, but it's still been in the 20s-30s the last few weeks so still kind of cold imo. You could definitely still walk if you wanted to though.

It’s a college town next to a college town, so there’s tons of off-campus housing at reasonable rates all around.
My first year there 2019 we had at least a foot of snow and it was below freezing all the way up until spring break. 2020-2021 2 feet of snow at its worse point in February, and very icy roads all January-February. 2021 winter was about the same.
This year it has been more mild for the whole state, but winter isn’t over yet so hard to say.

I have lived in Pullman for 4 years and I am happy to answer any questions. I commute to work in Clarkston. Spokane is 1.5 hours away if you need more shopping. Pullman itself is a very cute community and I really enjoy it. I grew up in one of the biggest cities in Idaho (like 60,000 people at the time lol), so that is my main comparison. I like small towns, so it doesn't bother me. Is there anything in particular you want to know about the area? Anything you like to do or that you feel is necessary in a city?

Edit: I see that you also asked about the winter. I have a skewed viewpoint of winter because I grew up somewhere where school was only cancelled if it was -20 or -30 with windchill (or if the buses would not start). I would consider Pullman to have mild winters. This winter in particularly has been very warm. We have had snow probably twice and it was only a few inches that melted within a few days. Pullman uses gravel instead of salt on the roads and they are good about keeping them clear. That being said, we do have snow most winters. I would say average winter temp is 20-30 degrees. Drive slowly in the snow and you will be fine.
The roads outside of Pullman are less well maintained, so keep that in mind if you need to drive to Spokane, the LC Valley, or any of the surrounding areas in the winter. When we have snow, my 45 minute commute to Clarkston becomes a 60 minute commute.
Almost everywhere in Pullman is 5-10 minutes to WSU, so you will not need to do much driving in the snow if you aren't planning on leaving town. I recommend googling the Palouse. This is highest wheat producing county in the nation and the rolling hills of wheat are gorgeous in the summer. There is a national forest about an hour away with smaller hikes closer to Pullman. This area is also home to the Nez Perce tribe and is the birthplace of the Appaloosa horse breed.

I'm OOS from Canada, but I will be attending the mixer on Thursday and a quick tour on Friday 🙂
Also I have no idea what to expect on mixer, so any insight is very much appreciated.

I am attending tonight's mixer and tour and my interview is Friday. I have not interviewed before, so I don't know what to expect at the mixer, but I would guess they will have food and people available to answer questions. Since you are OOS, does that mean you have an acceptance already? Do you have any questions about Pullman?
Edit: I just reviewed my email and it looks like light snacks will be provided. The mixer is at 5:30 and there is a student panel at 6:30.
