Wvsom?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
did they tell you that?

Welcome. Come visit the campus to make sure that you want to be here. I'm pretty sure that you'll like it

Wait, we can buy our way in? You mean i should be spending all my money on lottery tickets instead of MCAT study guides & applications?!?

😉

 Everything has a price, so yea I guess if you had enough cash you could. How do you think George Bush went to Yale?😉

Congratulations on the early acceptance. And yes, WVSOM does have an early acceptance program for those who have their applications in early, have good credentials and letters of recommendation.

Anyway, welcome to the team!

Honestly, I'm not sure. If I do not get into MD programs in the US, then I have a decision to make between WVSOM and MD programs in the caribbean. And WVSOM contacted via mail for those of you wondering.

and no, i did not pay them for an acceptance......im just good like that

Congrats.

I think your efforts will be better rewarded at WV than in the Caribbean.

For what it's worth, my MIL (who is an attending at a residency) confirmed this weekend that the order of preferance for residency spots is US MD>DO>foreign MD. In fact she went on to say that they do not even grant interviews to foreign grads. Keep in mind that she and this residency are a US allopathic (M.D.) program. Just food for throught I guess.

keep in mind that the "MD>DO>foreign grad" idea does not actually reflect the quality or caliber of physicians... it's just the pecking order that we're referring to...

But, to be honest, a US DO degree is heads-and-shoulders above a degree from the caribbean and it WILL be easier for you to get residencies, in general. If you come out of a carib school with all high passes and ace your rotations, I'm sure doors will still open but it's more of an uphill battle... definitely more of an uphill battle if you're just average (not a small feat in med school, btw)

Best of luck! My advice would definitely be for you to attend WVSOM. I interviewed there and loved it. I am only choosing CCOM due to better clinical rotations in densely populated areas (more variety of exposure and diverse patients). You can't go wrong with WVSOM... and I am rather confused as to why you'd get an acceptance w/out interview if your stats aren't >28 MCAT & >3.5 GPA which would make you competitive at a number of other DO/MD programs. If this is the case, why are you applying carib?

low verbal score....my breakdown was 12P-5V-13B. and my gpa is a 3.79. my low score in verbal is the only reason why im applying to the caribbean.

I bet you'll get interviews @ US schools. Call schools individually that you're interested in so you don't get screened out. A 13P/12B is no joke..coupled with that nearly 3.8 GPA... there's no reason why you shouldn't get into an osteo or even allo program. Best of luck. Don't sit back. Be proactive.

It's hard to get an interview with a 5. Only a 7 coupled with a high PS and BS score and gpa, will definitely grant you lots of MD interviews. If you are not sure about DO...then I suggest take the Mcat's in April, and see how it goes. If you score 7+ in verbal along with 12+ again in the PS and BS, I would re-apply. Many doors will open for you. I know this from first hand experience.

That said...for an American citizen, DO's are much much better than Carribbean.

It is also worth it to "waste" a year or two of reapplying, before deciding on the Carribbean route.

Umm well im not taking the mcat again so thanks anyway for the recommendation.....and ive already interviewed at 3 US MD programs in the state i live in. Yes i think a 5 is horrible, but i believe that the schools i interviewed at may overlook it because of my strong gpa, overall mcat score, strong LOR's, great essays, and my good communication skills. I guess we'll see what happens.

I am just wondering why you applied to DO if you really dont seem to want to go to a DO school? It seems like you would rather go to MD caribbean school rather than a DO school, so why did you waste everyones time and your money applying? There must have been something you liked about the DO philosophy or maybe it was a back up plan, which I can understand because everyone should have some kind of back up plan. Just wondering, not trying to be rude honestly.
