WesternU c/o 2027 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
But is preview for accepted students or just the general one they’ve done before?

General. I’m not sure if they do an accepted students day

Is there anything that we need to do as alternates like send final transcripts in or etc?

Does anyone know about Western like scholarships wise??? I really want to go (it's my top school and close to home) but I've been offered both lower tuition and scholarships at other schools. I know a lot of schools don't send out financial packages until later but any insight would be great!

Yes you can apply. It’s on your home page deadline early April. :) I will be applying for that because tuition is not very affordable.

While their are scholarships most of them are not open to first years. Most students aren't able to get funds until the 2nd year (generally this is true across the board). Most students rely on FASFA for the first year.

Thank you for this info I had no idea! Thought it was offered but it might be FASFA I was thinking of.

For all of you who live close to Pomona, what are all the dog friendly activities around here? I saw online that the shoppes at chino hills are dog friendly. I was wondering if there’s anything else? We’ve got two awkward days between going to Universal and Disney and westernu’s preview day, and I’ve got my two dogs here with me

I remember someone made a pros and cons list of all the vet schools somewhere in this forum. Does any of you guys know where I can find it? :(

There honestly isn't much besides hiking or visiting local dog parks. A lot of breweries are dog friendly that are here!

I’m not sure their hours of operation but there is a Dog park in Chino called Prado dog park that costs $15 per person but you can go for the whole day and it is 100 acres of fields and ponds to play with your dogs!

Hey all, I was accepted on March 6th as well. Are there any good resources for looking for cheaper housing for living in or around this area, or does anyone have good advice regarding housing here? This is currently my top choice of the schools I have been accepted to but I have a couple more to hear back from as well. Thanks!

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone is planning on going to the preview day tomorrow and would be willing to ask some questions for me if time permits? I was planning on going, but my dog’s Rover had to cancel last minute due to a family emergency, and unfortunately our check out time from our hotel is before the end of the preview day so I wouldn’t have a place to keep her. If you are able going and are able to ask a few questions (or maybe someone else already knows the answer) would you be able to ask:
1) if WesternU has any connections with zoos for those interested in zoo med
2) I believe that WesternU has a hospital on campus and I was wondering if they plan on turning it into a VTH one day
3) if there are opportunities to work in that same hospital

Thank you if you’re able to ask!!

Does anyone know where I'd find more specific data on Western grads' internship and residency match rates? Maybe something like specialty specific? I looked at the VIRMP data but it would be really helpful if I could find data on surgery or neuro internships and residencies

Please tell me it's not Penn 🥲
No it’s not don’t worry!!! Penn I’m still considering thankfully lol. I WAS considering Iowa since they offered me a scholarship, but found out that if you get one F they kick you out and you have to completely restart. So theoretically you could be almost done with 3rd year, get an F from illness, family matters etc. and you’d have to reapply and start from the beginning. It seems like a very harsh environment and not one I would be comfortable in. Obviously I’m not planning on failing vet school knock on wood, but still seems very stressful!

Oh thank god because I'm probably going to Penn, phew! Wow that's insane though! I'd be super hesitant too!

Normally you just wait until they accept you and ask for them.

My Fall 2022 denoted the completion of my masters degree and the completion of a pre-req so I sent them in early January, but if you’re not missing any prereqs that you completed in fall I don’t think you have to send them in!

Does anyone know if we have to pay the $500 right when we accept or can we accept and pay before April 15th?

Do you mind sending a link to that data? Would love to see it!

I heard that this situation might have just happened at WesternU. One of the current first years was made to restart after completing the last block of year two.

Ugh, seriously? I don't understand the logic unless someone's like failing in everything, and even then there's often circumstances that lead to that. Someone I know who attends Ohio told me some students didn't pass a first year class and the faculty allowed all of them to remediate it before the end of winter break and all of them were good after that.

Let me know if anybody knows where to start looking for off-campus housing that allows large dogs!

So the way the school works with grades is very interesting and confusing. They grade you on your exams and need a passing of 70% VBS. BUT here is the weird part BUT they also break it down by ologies (anatomy, physiology, parasitology etc.) These you need a 68% to pass, these ology grades are pulled from your VBS exams and practicals IF they have a practical. We've recently changed exam schedules so you are allowed to retake a VBs exam that you may have failed. For the most part the exams aren't too scary, they give you practice exams and as long as you study what your group does and what the exam has you'll be perfectly fine. Honestly a lot of my classmates say you really have to try to fail the exams. Personally I came in with a low GPA and my grades have been WAY better here then undergrad (which is the same as a good friend of mine). As long as you can get on yourself to study, make a study group and reach out for any help you can be successful in the curriculum.

Edit: we also allow remediation depending on which ology is low. Typically if you need to remediate I believe anatomy, physiology and pathology you will need to restart the year , most of the others you just take classes over the summer. (I believe this still reigns true )

I can do my best to answer for you!
1) Our professor for zoo/exotic is amazing! He has great connections and is able to really do a lot for you. We also have a zoo med club that helps with experiences etc. He used to work at the LA zoo!
2) we don't plan to turn it into a full teaching hospital because then we'd need to add a million internists which is very pricy. Keeping as is let's the school keep tuition down (I know it's already high). You do get to rotate through the hospital your 1,2 and 3 rd year!

Hello again! I honestly am not sure about the data :( we do have a lot of alumni that have gone through the programs but I honestly am not sure what the rates of matching are. I can tell you a lot of our alumni end up going the internal medicine route 😅

Thank you for the insight, no worries at all!!! Internal medicine would be fine as I am very interested in both neurology or cardiology within it! Does Western have a good amount of specialists? And how do you like PBL? I love learning on my own but honestly I worry I’ll study too much of something that won’t be on the test or vice versa!

Being able to divide your time is going to be key. Personally I love PBL and really enjoy learning on my own terms. Your group will create learning issues that will be the core of what to understand and your facilitator will be able to help keep you on track.

Using your content experts, friends in different PBL groups, facilitator and practice exams will be key. I've never had an issue with studying the wrong information utilizing everything I have to make sure I'm in the right direction! We have (usually) one content expert per "ology" usually meaning we have one speciality in each.

We do have quite a few internal medicine and pathology professors compared to others (i.e. one pharmacology, radiologist etc.).

can/should alternates even apply for that scholarship? i know we might as well try but i just feel so discouraged lol because wouldn’t they have to choose someone well before the semester starts, and we could still be not even accepted at that time so they’d pass on us?

I would definitely still apply if you would attend Western if taken off the waitlist! Financial aid packages generally get finalized and distributed the summer before/ right before classes begin. As long as you submit it by the deadline and you get accepted I would hope you would still be considered. I called Western's financial aid before acceptances were sent out and it sounded like anyone can apply. And with the scholarship deadline being close to the decision deadline they may not even reward people before then. The worst that can happen is you don't get it and the best is that you do!

I know people who remediated those subjects and did not go back a year.
